TURKEY. SYKES, Mark.
Macmillan, London, 1915. First edition, first issue with gilt crescent on upper cover. Octavo. pp xii, 638, [2] adverts. Photographs, plans, 16 coloured folding maps including three folding maps in pocket at rear. Original green cloth. Sykes was one of the architects of the Sykes–Picot Agreement, drawn up while the war was in progress, regarding the partitioning of the Ottoman Empire by Britain, France and Russia and, later on, Balfour Declaration. T.E. Lawrence described him as "the imaginative advocate of unconvincing world movements . a bundle of prejudices, intuitions, half-sciences. His ideas were of the outside; and he lacked patience to test his materials before choosing the style of building He would sketch out in a few dashes a new world, all out of scale, but vivid as a vision of some sides of the thing we hoped." Rear inner hinge cracked. Corners bumped. Edges of one map a little creased where it is jutting out. Very good. [Attributes: First Edition]

KAFKA, FRANZ
Leipzig: Der Weissen Bücher, 1915. First edition. FIRST APPEARANCE OF A MASTERPIECE OF WESTERN LITERATURE, PRECEDING THE FIRST BOOK EDITION. "Kafka read the first section of his 'bug piece' (Wanzensache) aloud to friends on November 24, 1912, and again on December 15. People started talking about it, and Kafka received a query from publisher Kurt Wolff in March 1913 on the recommendation of Kafka's friend Franz Werfel. Franz Blei, the literary editor of the new avant-garde journal Die weissen Blätter, expressed interest, and Robert Musil wrote as well, soliciting the novella for the more established Die neue Rundschau. But months passed before Kafka had a clean manuscript ready for submission, and then World War I intervened, causing further delays... In the spring of 1915, René Schickele took over as editor-in-chief of Die weissen Blätter, and with Max Brod's help, Kafka placed the story there. It came out in October 1915, and then appeared in December 1915 (though dated 1916) as a slender volume published by Kurt Wolff Verlag in Leipzig" (Susan Bernofsky, The New Yorker). IN: Die Weissen Blätter, 2 Jahrgang, October 1915, pp. 1177-1230. The whole issue (October 1915) offered. Leipzig: Der Weissen Bücher, 1915. Octavo, original wrappers; custom cloth box. Mild foxing to wrappers, a little wear at the spine ends. A rare, well-preserved copy in the original wrappers of the true first printing; considerably more rare than the first book edition. Very Good.

FIRBANK, Ronald.
London: Grant Richards Ltd, 1915. London: Grant Richards Ltd,, 1915. With a frontispiece by Felicien Rops. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, top edge green. With the dust jacket. Spine ends a little worn, text block very slightly toned. A very good copy in the slightly torn jacket, 30 mm tear to top of front joint, short closed tears to edges of panels, small tape repairs to verso. First edition, first impression, of Firbank's first novel, one of only 500 copies. Having published his first book as a schoolboy under his Christian name of Arthur, Firbank asked to be styled A. A. R. Firbank on the dust jacket, saying that "I feel sure that copies will sell better that way as one's acquaintance will recognise them sooner" (Benkovitz). His name only appears in that form on the front panel and spine of the jacket. On the rear panel, both flaps, and the title page, he is instead styled Ronald Firbank "for the first time, signalling the emergence of the mature writer. Like all his books until Prancing Nigger (1924), it was published at his own expense and to negligible acclaim. An unorthodox social comedy set in an English cathedral town, it was also the most experimental modernist novel yet published in England, and its abstruseness was found additionally baffling in the context of the war" (ODNB).

The Queen of Roumania; Dulac, Edmund (Illustrator)
London, New York, Toronto: Hodder & Stoughton, 1915. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Dulac, Edmund. Quarto size, 189 pp., six color plates. A breathtakingly lovely example of the incomparable work of Edmund Dulac (1882-1953), who truly needs no introduction; he was the only illustrator of his day on par with Arthur Rackham and was known for his exquisite colors, oriental influence, and versatility in his artistic endeavors. This book, Hodder and Stoughton's featured "New art gift book" of the year for 1915, is immediately recognizable for its frontispeice illustration of the snow maiden accompanied by white bears, which "makes one catch one's breath at its sheer beauty". The beautiful frontispiece was a supplement page in Hodder and Stoughton's "Christmas Bookman," which also featured a photograph of Dulac, a review of the book and its illustrations and several lavish ads. The pictures were described as "vivid and beautifully imaginative paintings." ___DESCRIPTION: Full original grey cloth with gilt lettering and sword design in navy blue, similarly decorated at the spine, title-page printed in olive-green and grey, six colour plates mounted on tan-grey art paper, framed with three-rule green borders, lettered tissue guards with green captions; quarto size (10" by 7"), pagination: [i-viii] 1-181. ___CONDITION: Volume is near fine; the binding appears to be fresh out of the binder's shop, with straight, unrubbed corners, a strong square text block with solid hinges, and the gilt on the front board exceptionally bright; the plates and tissue guards bright and c … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cavell, Edith
Palatine Press, Millgate, Wigan 1915 - Powerful WWI color propaganda piece, a memoir of Edith Cavell (1865 - 1915), a British nurse from Norfolk who helped Allied soldiers escape from German occupied Belgium, and was captured and executed by German firing squad. A large b&w printed photographic portrait of Cavell seated in her garden with her 2 dogs (Don and Jack) is at the center of the piece, with a photo credit to the Daily Mirror. The portrait is flanked on either side and beneath the image with text. The text, surrounded by many patriotic Union Jacks boldly printed in red and blue, includes a reference to German Baron von der Lancken, the German civil governor, "and his gang of sycophantic murderers" and Cavell's words before her execution, "I am happy to die for my country". The lyrics of "Abide With Me", Miss Cavell's Favourite Hymn, are printed beneath her portrait. The whole piece surrounded by double ruled borders and imperial crowns, printed in gray.14 x 14", printed on tissue, extremely fragile yet so well preserved. 2 contemporary folds, a small split at left edge, also in remarkably bright condition.

Rackham, illus.] Dickens Charles
London and Philadelphia William Heinemann and J. B. Lippincott Co. 1915. First edition of the holiday classic with Arthur Rackham's illustrations, with the 1915 date printed on the verso of the titlepage and "Heinemann" on the spine panel. With 12 haunting colour plates, illustrated endpapers, 18 black and white illustrations and line drawings by Arthur Rackham. The colourplates with tissue-guards captioned in dark red/brown. 8vo, publisher’s original green cloth lettered and pictorially decorated in black on the upper cover with a ringing Christmas bell motif and on the spine in black in a holly and berry motif. xi, 147 pp. A very nice copy of the most beloved Christmastime tale, the green cloth still quite attractive though with a little evidence of age at the tips and extremities, the spine panel mellowed a bit, the interior solid and firm, no marks or spotting, some very minor toning as is inevitable and some typical mellowing to the end papers. SCARCE FIRST EDITION. A shining example of what you get when a true masterpiece of literature is complemented by one of the world’s greatest book illustrators. An inspiring combination. Dickens writes of A Christmas Carol in his preface: "I have endeavoured in this Ghostly little book to raise the Ghost of an Idea which shall not put my readers out of humour with themselves, with each other, with the season, or with me. May it haunt their house pleasantly, and no one wish to lay it." Surely, the author would be pleased with the perennial delight his little Christmas tale has stirred in the hearts and imaginations of generations … [Click Below for Full Description]
