Maurice E McLoughlin
New York: George H. Doran Company. Condition: Very Good + / Very Good -. A solid copy of the 1915 1st edition, IN THE VERY UNCOMMON PICTORIAL DUSTJACKET. Ghostwritten, by all accounts, by a young Sinclair Lewis, who 15 years later would become the first American writer to win the Nobel Prize in literature. Tight and VG+, with no writing or markings of any kind (foxing, etc.) to speak of. And in a bright, VG- (and yet still very presentable) example of the fragile dustjacket. The jacket shows a degree of chipping along the panel edges (resulting in just a touch of loss to the title at the spine crown and the publisher's address at the foot of the rear panel), a 3" chip in the center of the spine (roughly the size of a quarter and then running down a bit), inconspicuous staining and tape re-inforcing to the inside of the dustjacket and, finally, light staining --and a bit of creasing-- to the front panel. Thick octavo, illustrated with 72 crisp black-and-white photos, Introduction/Preface by R. Norris Williams, 2nd (the 1914 National Champion of the United States). Maurice McLoughlin (1890-1957) not only won the US Championships in 1912 and 1913 and earned the world #1 ranking in 1914, he was also the first men's player from the Western United States (Nevada) to become US Champion and the first US finalist at Wimbledon (where he lost to Anthony Wilding in 1913). RANSON GRIFFIN
On offer is an interesting, original 1915 manuscript diary handwritten by the 74 year old Ranson Griffin as per an ownership inscription at the rear endpaper and birthday confirmation on the date October 31st as per the inscription. Well filled save for a handful of days Ms. Griffin details a life of never ending daily chores and duties as any rural life peppered with visits, trips, local events, familial occasions and fair bit of genealogical information for the historian or researcher. We note that Ranson almost daily mentions her 'Ma' and 'Pa' and given she is 74 years old herself the family appears very long lived and vital as we curiously note the 1920 census lists Ranson Griffin as an active broker, age 79. The diary measures about 3" x 5" and is in good shape.

Saltus, Edgar (1855-1921)
A single sheet, approx. 8 ½ in. x 11 ¾ in. containing an early draft of a poem by Saltus written in pencil apparently while he was at the Manhattan Club. A small article from the N. Y. Times, Jan. 9, 1915 is pasted on the sheet under the title "Calilgula Germanicus." The newspaper article reads: "Germans have been captured lately in whose possession was found the last proclamation of the Kaiser that 'If compelled to retire from Poland, leave standing neither house nor town; leave only the bare earth underfoot.' Well, the road to Berlin does not end at the Polish frontier." In the upper left corner of the sheet is written: "Edgar Saltus Manhattan Club Stamped Envelope." Then follows the poem: "Felon, live hideously while you can, /Reptiles and vermin and all shapes unclean,/All things debased and all that do demean,/The shade of Herod and of Gengis Khan,/The ghoul Tiberius and the fiend Ivan,/ The octopus and, yes, the Lampsacene, /These only now do call you kin, I ween,/For felon though you be, you are not man. Live then, while yet you may, and devastate. /But hark! A blare of Russian bugles comes. /With it, the fanfares of arisen France/Shall ring, in trumpet notes, your nearing fate,/When, to the Belgian and the British drums,/The Cossack stallions on your sceptre dance. [signed] Edgar Saltus." The published versions (in "For France" & "Poppies and Mandragora") are slightly different from that shown in this document. Included with the sheet is a typed catalogue slip which shows the name "Kahanowicz" (Alexander Kahanowicz [?] a noted book collector.) From the personal coll … [Click Below for Full Description]

Frost, Robert
(N.p, 1915. Single page. Signed by Frost. The typescript has been copied in blue ink, with two manuscript corrections in Frost's hand. The first, a change from "need" to "wish" in the second line, appears in subsequent editions of the poem, which was first published in Frost's Mountain Interval in 1916. The second correction, a revision of "the" to "some" in the twentieth line, has not remained; the published line thus reads "I shall make the reckless choice." Creased where folded in fourths and a single spot of foxing not affecting the text, else a fine typescript from early in Frost's career, with unique pre-publication alterations. Jerome D. Travers And Grantland Rice
Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Page & Company. A truly impressive copy of the 1915 1st edition. Tight and unusually crisp, with just a touch of light foxing to the endpapers. And in a bright, price-intact ($1.25), VG-to VG example of the 1st issue pictorial dustjacket. Light chipping at the spine crown and along the panel edges and tips, light foxing to the panels. Still though, handsome and very presentable--and notably uncommon in dustjacket. 12mo, 9 line-drawn illustrations complementing the text, co-written by the formidable Grantland Rice. Jerome Travers had just come off a win at the 1915 US Open at Baltusrol to add to his 4 US Amateur Golf Championships and, by any measure, was (and still is) considered one of the great golfers of the early part of the 20th century. His name is included among some of the immortals of the day such as Harry Vardon, Francis Ouimet, Chich Evans and Harold Hilton. (Donovan & Murdoch 37130). Near Fine in Very Good jacket. Boccioni e Carrà, copertine) Aa. vv.
1915. Milano, [in fine:] Istituto Editoriale Italiano, «Teatro» 11 e «Supplemento teatrale settimanale», 1915 (dic.) - 1916 (apr.), Edizione originale. Mawson, Sir Douglas
Lippincott, Philadelphia, 1915. This is the prized first American edition with the silver decoration on front cover and printed from the same sheets as lst UK edition printed by Heinemann the same year. Mawson's tale is one of the great stories of survival of the heroic age of Antarctic exploration. Exploring with Ninnis & Mertz in 1912, Ninnis was lost down a crevasse. With him went the 6 fittest dogs & the most indispensable supplies. Mertz & Mawson improvised, feeding the dogs worn out mitts & rawhide straps, but eventually the weakest dogs were killed to feed them all, until all the dogs were gone. The two men reserved the dog's livers as the meat easiest to chew, unaware that liver's toxins were slowly poisoning the men as they consumed it. Mertz became delirious and died. Mawson continued, the soles of his feet separating and his toes and fingers festering. Miraculously he found a depot of food, and arrived eventually at the main depot, to see the ship departing on the horizon. He wintered over with the 6 men who had remained to continue the search. On Dec. 24, 1913 their 2 year journey was finally over. Small 4to, 2 vols, 349 pp & 338 pp, 224 ills., 37 ills. in text, and 3 folding maps. Original blue buckram with silver title, the secondary binding. Spine extremes & corners very lightly rubbed. Inner hinge vol 2 is partly cracked but strong, the silver gilt at spine a bit rubbed. Silver gilt illustration at front boards pops out at you, light edge rubbing both volumes. Foredge uncut. Otherwise a very good+ copy, remarkably bright and clean. Spence 773. STERLING, GEORGE]. Dassonville, William, Photographer
[San Francisco: William Dassonville], 1915. Platinum print, 20.5 x 15.5 cm, with the photographer's estate stamp ("Estate of William Dassonville") on the reverse of the print. A rare and fine photographic portrait of the prominent California poet George Sterling (1869-1926), taken by the prominent California photographer, William Dassonville (1879-1957) and inscribed to Dassonville by Sterling in the lower left corner of the image: "Dear Dassonville: This is the best picture ever taken of your friend George Sterling 1915." Sterling was a photogenic subject and by 1915 Dassonville was well established as one of the most sought-after portrait photographers in California, and the combination of the two makes for a striking portrait. 1915 was also the year Sterling's famous poetical contributions to the Panama-Pacific International Exposition.

Quarto (306 x 210 mm), contemporary black quarter sheep, black leather-textured cloth boards, titles gilt to spines in gilt ruled compartments, plain end papers. Arabic text. Backstrips scuffed, a few bumps to boards of two volumes, light foxing to edges, slight worming to volume I and II, text largely unaffected. Final few leaves of volume II slightly crumpled at the fore-edge with light associated closed tears. Tear in portrait in supplemental volume partially repaired with archival tape, small closed tear to one folding plate in volume II, closed tear along fold of plate in volume VI. Remains a very good set. Portrait frontispieces, 64 full page portrait plates, 42 other full page plates of photographic reproductions and maps, 22 folding plates with maps, plans and photographic reproductions. First editions of 2,000, scarce with only 4 sets on Copac (BL, SOAS, Oxford, Manchester). Sami, an Egyptian civil servant, dedicated over 20 years to this monumental document of Egyptian history from 622 to 1879 CE, including a supplementary volume on the bridges, barrages and dams along the Nile river. By the early 20th century the genre of the chronicle was already somewhat of an anachronism and this work is now considered "the last celebrated Egyptian example" of the style (Crabbs, p. 121) and "the most ambitious [historical] project" of the period (Gorman, p. 14). This work is considered an "unprecedented reservoir of primary source material" (Di-Capua, p. 82) on the mi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Maugham, W. Somerset
London: William Heinemann Ltd, 1915. First British Edition. First British edition, first impression. GIORDANO, Umberto 1867-1948
3 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated April 5, 1915. In black ink. On stationery with "Villa Fedora Baveno" embossed at head. In Italian (with translation). Giordano will have Mr. Carozzelli, of the Sonzogno publishing firm, send Marescotti a piano-vocal score and libretto of his opera, Madame Sans Gêne. He hopes that Marescotti, a critic, will write a few complementary things about the opera. "I'm glad that you speak about [the opera] with your competence, [which is] evident from the Encyclopedia, and I hope that this time you will want to write differently than before, a few flattering things for me." Very slightly worn and soiled; creased at folds. "Giordano handled the late Romantic, emotionally vehement idiom of the giovane scuola with ease and fluency, being particularly skilful in weaving into his scores elements of local and historical colour... His stage sense is always sure, and his vocal writing unfailingly effective." Julien Budden in Grove Music Online. Giordano's opera, Madame Sans Gêne, was first performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York on January 25, 1915. Marescotti was a critic for the journal, Musici e Musicisti, which was the organ of the Casa Ricordi. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries a great rivalry existed between Ricordi and Sonzogno, the two most important Italian publishing firms of the period. This may explain why Marescotti had been critical of Giordano, whose works Sonzogno championed.

WORLD WAR ONE: KURZWEG, Georg
Eight original drawings (five in pen and ink and three in pencil) and one hand-drawn postcard (postmarked 1 June 1915). Together with a sketchbook containing some superb pencil exercises done while Kurzweg was still at school. All contained within a contemporary cloth portfolio. The drawings are mostly dated 1916, either Toulouse or Villeneuve; the portfolio is marked as ‘a memento of my time as a prisoner, 1915-16’. The drawings depict the life of a soldier and prisoner: cleaning the communication trenches (’we did this for a fortnight’ 1915); portraits of comrades (Anton Gussner, ‘who made me coffee; the teacher Rosner, ‘drawn by candlelight 1917’); queuing for food in the camp; a soldier writing at a desk; a political caricature; ‘Hans Meyer studying’; a soldier repairing his uniform (this in colour). The latter two were subsequently published in the charity publication Deutsche Kriegsgefangenenkunst (Bern, 1918); two copies are included here with the drawings.

CUMMINGS, E. E. (Edward Estlin)
1915. Our drawing is likely from Cummings later stylistic period. The Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center on line describes Cummings works as falling into two phases: "The first phase, about 1915-1928, was represented by his experimental large-scale abstracts and his drawings and caricatures published in The Dial. During the 1920s Cummings started to drop out of the gallery scene, and he came to view the art establishment as anti-intellectual. The second phase of his art was from about 1928 until his death; this phase was characterized by representational works: still lifes, landscapes, nudes, and portraits." Signed water color portraits are uncommon.

""the English are most sensitive about my having stated that they had failed to do what they ought to have done, thanks to their lack of preparedness in advance; and this although I stated at the same time that we would have done infinitely worse."" Transcript""I feel as gloomy as you do; and I am glad you are starting that magazine. I enclose three dollars for it. I look forward eagerly to seeing your articles in the Tribune. You may be amused to know that the English are most sensitive about my having stated that they had failed to do what they ought to have done, thanks to their lack of preparedness in advance; and this although I stated at the same time that we would have done infinitely worse. Sincerely yours, / Theodore Roosevelt""Historical BackgroundIn the November 1915 issue of the Metropolitan Magazine, Theodore Roosevelt published ""The Duty of the United States to Its Own People,"" in which he severely criticized British preparedness. ""England at this moment,"" Roosevelt wrote, ""affords a lamentable example of the punishment that will surely in the end befall any nation which fails to take its duties seriously.... Relatively to her population, she has put an army of utterly inadequate size into the field.... More lamentable still, she has utterly failed, even with a year during which to work, in the effort to produce the artillery and munitions of war which will make her able to be as effective as her German opponents or her Fren … [Click Below for Full Description]
