Schweizer Bilderbuch-Illustr. S. 38/Nr. 640, Farbtaf. 14. [Lenin]
Geneva, Izd. P. i N. Kievskikh, 1915. 8vo (248 x 168 mm). 196 pp. Original printed wrappers. First and only issue (a double issue) of the journal founded by Lenin, containing the first appearance of his important article "Krakh II Internatsionala" ("The collapse of the II International", written May-June, 1915). In this work, Lenin "was signalling, for the first time in his career, that the establishment had become an immediate possibility and objective" and indicated his striving towards a third International (Fobert Service, Lenin, p. 82). Two other articles by Lenin are also printed here: "Chestnyi golos frantsuzskogo sotsialista" ("The honest voice of a French socialist") and "Imperializm i sotsializm v Italii" ("Imperialism and socialism in Italy"). Work on the publication was complicated by conflicts within the editorial team: Lenin opposed the anti-Party group around Bukharin and Piatakov, seeking to expose its anti-bolshevik views and to create two seperate groups. He was extremely disappointed when the journal eventually appeared and, as a result, the editors of "Sotsial-Demokrat" began publishing a new journal, entitled "Sbornik sotsial-demokrata" beginning in 1916; "Kommunist" was discontinued. "In his subsequent account, Lenin claimed that the journal had served its purpose once it had printed Socialism and the War by Lenin and Zinoviev" (Service, Lenin, p. 112). - Rare; we are unable to locate auction records either in Russia or the West. - Wrappers lightly toned; else a very good, uncut and unopened copy. - Souvarine and Bernshtein catalog (Dekker & Nordemann … [Click Below for Full Description]

POUND, Ezra (ed.)
London: Elkin Mathews, 1915. Octavo. Original grey paper covered boards with geometric design by Dorothy Shakespear in black to covers, titles to spine and front cover black, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. A couple of pencil underlinings to text. Spine browned, wear to spine ends, joints, and tips, rubbing to extremities, light foxing to covers and contents; a very good copy. First edition, first impression, one of 500 copies, including the first appearance of The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. With the ownership inscription of John Wilton Haines on the front free endpaper, "J W Haines, Hucclecote, in Gloucester". Haines (1875-1960) was a poet, solicitor, and botanist, closely associated with the Dymock and Georgian Poets, the second anthology of whose poetry was also published in 1915. He was related by marriage to Lascelles Abercrombie and was a close friend of Edward Thomas; his involvement meaning "no study of these poets would be complete without mentioning the encouragement and support he gave to them" (Parker, p. 4). Although Haines published a volume of his own poetry, entitled Poems (1921), it was in his role as a financial, legal, and critical adviser that he remains most significant. Haines's ownership of this important Modernist anthology provides an interesting association, living as he did amongst poets whose works, although seen at the time of publication as progressive, would become something of a by-word for conservatism in poetry. The Catholic Anthology contains the first appearance in a book form of five poems by Eliot, including The Love Song of J. A … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wyndham Lewis
London, John Lane. Blast. July 1915. Second of two volumes published. Original copy. Light spotting places. Lacking part of backstrip. Binding appears reasonably tight. 112 pages, dimensions 30x25.5cm. Some small pencil annotation to illustrations. Includes C R W Nevinson's On the Way to the Trenches slightly spotted. Please see the photographs for a better idea of the condition. BLAST 1 was published weeks before the beginning of the First World War, while BLAST 2 (with a woodcut by Wyndham Lewis on the cover) came out a year later. It was considerably reduced and muted in colour, and lacked the visual drama of the first one. It was subtitled 'War Number', indicating the reason for its reduced size and ambition. The content in Blast 2 is by dominated by Lewis. There are poems by Ezra Pound as well as a number of poems and pieces of prose by Helen Saunders, Jessie Dismorr and others. Saunders' contributed an essay-cum-poem called, rather evocatively, A Vision of Mud. Famously Blast 2 includes two poems by T.S.Eliot; Preludes and Rhapsody on a Windy Night. Because of the power of the visual images and the graphic design, especially of the first issue, it is often forgotten that Blast was as much a literary journal as anything else. Poetry, prose, and art criticism sit alongside manifesto statements and pictures. In Blast 2 many of the images refer to the war, with such titles as Combat and War-Engine. The most moving and expressive part of Blast 2 is a piece by Gaudier-Brezka called Vortex, with the subtitle: Written from the trenches. At the end of it there is a little noti … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Lenin]
[Geneva?], Izdanie Zagr. Sekretariata Org. K-ta R.S.D.R.P, 1915. 8vo (218 x 148 mm). 148 pp. Original printed wrappers. First and only issue of the extremely scarce journal (only one issue appeared), which presents the results of the Zimmerwald Conference on September 5-8, 1915. The journel represents the views of the "Zimmerwald-Left", a coalition of revolutionary socialists who forcefully disagreed with the social democrats around Kautsky in their approach to the war. While the German Social Democrats had voted for war credits in 1914 and spoke out in favor of defending the fatherland, the socialist revolutionaries argued placing the solidary of the international proletariat over national interests and called for the dissolution of the Second International. The issue contains articles by numerous members of the Organizing Committee of the foreign secretariate of the Russian Socialist Revolutionary Party, such as A. Martynov and Iurii Larin. It also reproduces the full manifesto that was approved by the participants, and into which Lenin inserted several key demands of revolutionary, anti-militarist socialism, followed by the signature of Lenin and other members of the various national delegations. - Rare; we are unable to locate auction records either in Russia or the West. - Light wear to spine extremities; still very good. - Not in the Souvarine and Bernshtein catalog (Dekker & Nordemann BV, 1980).

Donzow studierte Rechtswissenschaften in Sankt Petersburg und trat 1905 der Ukrainischen Sozialdemokratischen Arbeiterpartei (USDRP) bei. Maugham, William Somerset
New York: George H. Doran Company, 1915. First edition, second issue, with the misprint corrected at line 4, page 257. 1 vols. 8vo. The Magnum Opus, Inscribed. Inscribed simply by Maugham on the front free endpaper in ink: "For Paul North / W. Somerset Maugham." Inscribed copies of the true first (American) edition of Maugham's most famous book are extremely scarce, from any period. This inscription, although probably not contemporary with publication, has the look and feel of being early, and is in brown ink -- not at all like the blue ink which Maugham typically used in later, post-war inscriptions. A very desirable inscribed copy of Maugham's most famous work, and one of the enduring novels of the twentieth century. Stott A21. Original green linen blocked in gilt on upper cover, gilt title on spine, faint rubbing to extremities, rear cover with ink stains. Bookplate of Opha Moore, Ohio historian, and Columbus, Ohio bookseller's ticket on front pastedown. Contemporary presentation inscription on title page, "Compliments of the Season -- A.J. Griffth, D.W. (director); Lilian Gish, Raoul Walsh (starring)
Original handbill for a theatrical run of D.W. Griffith's "Birth of a Nation" (1915) at the Newark Theatre in Newark, New Jersey. Noted on the bill are cast members Lillian Gish, Mae Marsh, Donald Crisp, and Raoul Walsh (here spelled "Raul Walsh"), who played John Wilkes Booth. Also noted on the bill is that the film is to be accompanied by a full symphony orchestra under the direction of Albert Pesce, who arranged music for four D.W. Griffith films between 1919 and 1922. An early epic from Griffith, who was inspired by the sprawling Italian productions "Quo Vadis" (1913) and "Cabiria" (1914), films that not only legitimated the feature film runtime but made extensive use of the traveling camera, something Griffith revolutionized in the United States with this film. At the time of production, American companies were skeptical of an audience's ability to endure complicated narratives and inflated runtimes, so Griffith formed his own production company to take it on, leaving Biograph in 1913, where he made numerous successful shorts. Upon release, it was an immediate hit with audiences, and screened at movie palaces like Newark Theatre for years, ultimately becoming the highest grossing film of the silent era. 5.5 x 8 inches. Faint dampstain and small chip to the upper edge, overall very well preserved, Very Good plus.

Lawrence, D. H
London: Methuen, 1915. First edition. [viii], 463, [1], [4, ads] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. First edition of Lawrence's controversial novel. "Methuen published The Rainbow in September 1915, but it got savage reviews, most of which attacked what was understood as the book's overt sexuality, and it was withdrawn from sale. At Bow Street magistrates' court on 13 November it was banned as obscene (Lawrence having no opportunity to defend it). Its religious language, emotional and sexual explorations of experience, and sheer length had given its readers problems, but it was Ursula's lesbian encounter with a schoolteacher in the chapter 'Shame' which had finally condemned it in the eyes of the law and of a country now focused on conflict" (ODNB). Roberts A7. Publisher's cloth, spine stamped in gilt. Hinges weak, two small tears to spine, otherwise very good. Duschnes ticket on rear pastedown.
