[Album of 38 Photographs by New York Pictorialist Photographer Edward R. Dickson, Including His Complete Series of Photographs Illustrating Stephen Phillips's Poem, "Marpessa" - Assembled, Inscribed, and Signed by the Artist for "Marpessa"]

[New York], 1915. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Folio (17 1/2 x 13 1/4 inches). 38 platinum photographic prints (first 18 numbered), ranging in size from 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches to 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches. 36 of the photographs mounted to trimmed paper and all lightly mounted to album of 40 leaves. All photographs bear the "ERD" monogram of the artist. Modern three-quarter cloth and marbled paper over boards, gilt leather spine label, endpapers added, all original paper retained. First leaf inscribed by photographer, "To Marpessa, In remembrance of the fields of our endeavor. July 17 1915 Edw R Dickson." One internal leaf in second, unnumbered section with remanants of glue and tissue, evidence of one lost photo. First 18 photographs numbered in pencil on verso of mount, except No. 15, whose mounting paper is of different stock from the others. Numbers 2-18 of the first section accompanied by typescript leaves laid in, numbering each plate and containing a line from Stephen Phillips's poem, "Marpessa." A few instances of minor abrasions, tiny stains, or light toning to photographs, occasional stains on leaves, but generally near fine in a fine binding. An album of original photographs taken and assembled by the American Pictorialist photographer, Edward Robert Dickson (1880-1911), including his series, "Marpessa," based on the poem by Stephen Phillips (1864-1915). One of the photographs from this series was exhibited, with several other pieces by Dickson, in 1915 at the Sixtieth Annual Exhibition of the Roya Photographic Society in London. An issue of PUBLISHERS' WEEKLY from the following year calls the series "one of the best examples" of the "artistic photography executed by such masters as White, Dickson, Coburn and a dozen others" being paired with poetry. The photographs, themselves, feature views of a young woman in diaphonous night-dress and somnambulant poses and expressions. The additional twenty photographs include both men and women subjects (including several from his series, "The Dance," and one of three male nudes climbing rocks) and several unpopulated natural and architectural scenes. Most of all of the photographs appear to have been taken in or near upper Manhattan. Edward Dickson was closely associated with Clarence H. White and a founding member of the Pictorial Photographers of America. His 1922 obituary in AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHY lamented his untimely death at the age of forty-two and called him "one of the most eager and gifted workers in the group of men and women who devote themselves to pictorial photography." The same article refers to the present series of images: "?The later years of his life were spent in that part of Manhattan, beyond Dyckman Street, known as Inwood. That section of the Island he very much loved, and many of his pictures were taken in or around those wooded heights overlooking Spuyten Duyvil. These pictures include a series of illustrations to Stephen Phillips? poem, ?Marpessa.?" In 1913, Dickson co-founded PLATINUM PRINT : JOURNAL OF PERSONAL EXPRESSION and served as its editor through its final issue in 1917 (its title was changed in the final two issues to PHOTO-GRAPHIC ART). At PLATINUM PRINT, Dickson collaborated closely with printer and designer Frederic W. Goudy, who, during part of that period, worked from a back room of the Little Book-Shop Around the Corner in New York, then managed by Laurence J. Gomme. The present album has remained in Gomme's family since his death in 1974.

Saint Léger en Yvelines, 1915. 12х14,5 сm. Thank you note on the Pasteur Institute stationery: «Saint Léger en Yvelines, 22 June 1915. Dear Mr. Chairman, Let me express tremendous gratitude to you as the face of Russian Veterinary Society for electing me as honorary member and for wishes on my 70th birthday. I give to you personally and to Draginsky and Prokofiev my sincere gratitude. With sincere respect your Il. Mechnikov». The note was addressed to Sergei Grintser (1860-1936), chairman of the Russian Veterinary Society. Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov (1845-1916), the celebrated Russian biologist, was the second Russian Nobel Laureate (1908). He was awarded the prize for his work on immunity. Mechnikov discovered and described phagocytosis-the phenomenon that is pivotal for the modern understanding of immunity. In 1887 he moved to Paris where he was given a laboratory in the Pasteur Institute (deputy director since 1905). He lived in France till his death but never lost connection with Russia.

Japanese Album of Woodblocks Mostly of Abstract Designs, with Some Stylized Zoological and Human Subjects as well

      - Circa 1915. 24 by 16.5 cm. 25 leaves (50 pp.) doubled over, in the Japanese style, of which 37 pages are color plates, and nine pages are of calligraphy or text. Of the illustrations, three are two page spreads. Subject-wise, we count 21 of the illustration pages devoted to abstract designs, ten with animal studies, some of which are also abstract to some degree, whether in the stylization of the animal or in the background, three are predominantly of human subjects, and three are a hybrid. These categories are somewhat abitrary, admittedly. Generally the colors are bright and vivid, and many of the abstract designs, the dragons, and ornate birds are extraordinarily striking. The animal studies, besides dragons, include a monkey and fish. Many of the designs would have had a general applicability but would certainly have been possible kimono styles. Soiling on the wrap covers. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

- Sollntse Rossi was a Russian weekly magazine, published in St. Petersburg between 1910-1916 by Alexander E. Kogan (1878-1949). In this culturally and historically diversified newspaper were among others Works of Arkady Averchenko, Sasha Chorny, Basil Adikaevsky, Alexander Perfilev, Nikolai Agnivtsev and Ivan Grabowski published. Also by renowned photographers such as Moisei Nappelbaum, Peter Adolfovich Otsup etc. which photographers were reproduced in beautiful gravure printing plates. Our compilation consists of 40 individual numbers of the war the vintage 1915. The numbers were previously involved in a highly gebrauchsspurigem Publishing Binding and numerically continuously. but the vintage was not complete. The magazines missing except the last there embedded number, the back covers, but are content complete and cover each number about 16 pages. Usually the leaves are loosened and now and again loosely, on the back here and there are some remnants of the old assembly book cover, very occasional tears, slightly discolored, the famous colored front cover (by renowned Russian artists of the time illustrated) available. Some numbers without front cover we attach to it, but they do not belong in the count. - Insg. an outstanding collection of this important Russian magazine, with a wealth of articles on the war events, the ballet, the population (among others also an article about Russian Jews), an article on Tolstoy, further to artists, actors and even reports of foreign nations.         X Rays and Crystal Structure

London: G. Bell and Sons, Ltd.,, 1915. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt, double-line border to boards in blind. Four photographic plates. Spine somewhat faded and dulled, a few minor marks to cloth and light rubbing to extremities, residue of library stamps to spine, Cambridge University Chemical Laboratory library ink stamp to title page and occasional pages and plates within, later Churchill College Cambridge library stamp and deaccession slip, residue from removed library slip, pencil notes on the book and provenance to front pastedown. Sound, clean but for the library markings, a very good copy withal. First edition, first impression, presentation copy, of the first textbook on x-ray crystallography, for which its authors won the Nobel Prize. This copy has a presentation slip pasted down to the front free endpaper verso printed in red reading "Sent at the Request of the Author. York House, Portugal Street, W.C.", and the ink ownership inscription on the title page of Professor Sir William Jackson Pope KBE FRS (1870-1939), a prominent English Chemist noted for his crystallographic research using a goniometer, and his work in the field of stereochemistry. He was Fellow of the Royal Society from 1902 and Professor of Chemistry at Cambridge from 1908. During the First World War he served on the Board of Invention and Research for the Admiralty and on the Chemical Warfare committee at the Ministry of Munitions, being appointed CBE in 1918 and KBE in 1919. This copy has the library stamps of the Cambridge University Chemical Laboratory, and is a highly appropriate association copy presented "at the Request of the Author" (a seemingly more personal and deliberate manner of presentation than the rather more common "Presentation Copy" blind-stamp extant in a number of other copies. Author William Henry Bragg (1862?1942) was a mathematician and physicist who did important early work on radioactivity. He was a scholar at Trinity College Cambridge and gained a first class degree in Mathematics. He invented the x-ray spectrometer and with his son William Lawrence (1890?1971) invented x-ray crystallography, the science of using of x-ray diffraction patterns to determine the structure of molecules. This book describing their discoveries became the standard guide to this rapidly expanding and highly influential field, and the Braggs were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1915, with Bragg Jr. today remaining the youngest person to have achieved the honour. The younger Bragg went on to have an illustrious career, being appointed Cavendish professor of Physics at Cambridge in 1938 and presiding over the work of Watson and Crick during their discovery of the structure of DNA, made possible by x-ray crystallography. The Braggs' work was noted in Printing and the Mind of Man to have "virtually given the science of crystallography a new basis. Thus the fundamentally differenet qualities of two forms of carbon, graphite and diamond,a re seen to be due to differences in the arrangements of the atoms and in the distances between them. This makes it possible in the commercial laboratory to build new substances and materials based on the arrangement of atoms that will ensure certain desired qualities." (PMM)

Board game, "You will laugh too if you KANGAROO!"

New York:: Kangaroo Corporation; Gray Lith. Co.,. 1915.. A large laughing female kangaroo with a joey in her pouch who says "Be Happy at Home!" to another young kangaroo asking "Why such joy?" decorates the triangular box lid of this amusing bright orange and purple 1915 peg board game. The playing board itself is framed with the text, "You can't be blue if you KANGAROO.... No trouble troubles you." The unusual triangular box features three kangaroos on the top lid, with edges decorated with horse shoes and shamrocks on a purple ground. The instructions are printed on the under side of the top lid, including the offer of a $500 reward. The Kangaroo Corporation offered the prize for any correct solution to the game, which involves landing the King in Goal No. 14. "The above prize to be awarded January 15, 1916." 25 numbered holes on the board, with all but one hole for small wooden pegs. 11 pegs are lacking. The object of the game was to jump holes so that only the King remained in hole number 14, in the manner of Chinese checkers. Each side of the triangular box measures 9 1/4". The box printed by Gray Lith. Co. N.Y.;1915 copyright by the Kangaroo Corporation. The top lid with some fading, a scratch in the lower right corner, rubbed at edges, corners repaired with sticky tape. The board interior with color more vivid, just a bit of wear around numbered peg holes.

Genealogical and Personal History of Western Pennsylvania

Scarce History Books - Genealogical and Personal History of Western- Pennsylvania. 1,789 pages. Q. One half Morocco. New York: Lewis Historical Publishing Company, 1915. Three Volumes. First Edition. First Printing. Out of Print.Personal History of Western Pennsylvania, presents in the aggregate an amount and variety of genealogical and persona! information and portraiture unequaled by any kindred publication. No similar work concerning Western Pennsylvania has ever before been presented, and it contains a vast amount of ancestral history never before printed. The object, clearly defined and well digested, is to present in concise f(jrm the history of Western Pennsylvania Families of the Colonial Days. There are numerous voluminous histories of the State, making it unnecessary in this work to even outline its annals. What has been published, however, relates principally to civic life. The amplification necessary to complete the picture, old and nowadays, is what is supplied by these Genealogical and Personal Memoirs. In other words, while.others have written of the times, the province of this work is as a chronicle of the people who have made this magnificent region what it is. Unique in conception and treatment, this work constitutes one of the most original and permanently valuable contributions ever made to the social history of an American community. In it are arrayed in a lucid and dignified manner all the available facts regarding the ancestry, personal careers and matrimonial alliances of those who, in each succeeding generation, have been accorded leading positions in social, professional and bu.sinless life. It is not based upon, neither does it minister to, aristocratic prejudices and assumptions. On the contrary, its fundamental ideas are thoroughly American and democratic. The work everywhere conveys the lesson that distinction has been gained only by honorable public service, or by usefulness in private station, and that the development and prosperity of the region of which it treats have been dependent upon the character of its citizens, and in the stimulus which they have given to commerce, to industry, to the arts and sciences, to education and religion to all that is comprised in the highest civilization of the present day through a continual progressive doe,.Conditions: Age appropriate wear of covers, owners writings on blank front page, binding is firm, pages are clean.         The Thirty-Nine Steps (First Printing)

William Blackwood & Sons 1915 - First edition, first impression; 253pp + 2pp of publisher’s adverts. Near Fine: tightly bound in notably vibrant and clean blue cloth, lettered in black to the upper board and backstrip; very slight sunning to the spine with a little rubbing to its tips; tanned to the edge of the page block with some isolated spots, a few penetrating; tiny fray to the top-edge of one page; faint foxing to the endpapers with a previous owner’s neat signature to the ffep, else crisp and clean. A delightfully fresh example, and scarce, thus. All orders are sent very carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and sturdy cardboard. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Small, thin 8vo, original printed wrappers. Wrappers somewhat dust-soiled and rubbed with a few faint stains on the covers, otherwise a very good copy, enclosed in a half-morocco slipcase. Some general browning to contents, minor wear to wrappers but a very decent copy. First edition. sole printing. With the author's presentation inscription to the second blank, "Sybil fr. E.P. 1920".
