        Early World War One Photograph Album: Flanders and Gallipoli

      Photograph album; 40 by 28cm; original green cloth; 64 pages; 224 black and white photographs, the majority 11 by 16.5cm, the remainder 6.5 by 4.5cm. An outstanding and important early Great War Photograph Album compiled in the most part by Captain Henry Colver, in Flanders. Twenty two of the photographs relate to Gallipoli and were taken by his brother, Edward. Henry Colver served with the 1/5 York and Lancaster Regiment, he was the son of a Sheffield Steel Magnate. It is obvious from the quality of the photographs that Henry or Harry as he was known as had a passion for photography and was in the front rank of amateur photographers. He obviously took a small portable camera wherever the battalion went, a number of images suggest that he was not averse to organising men to get the composition he required. The noted historian John Keegan, has remarked that 'there are almost no private photographs of any episode of the First World War from any front. An event of the greatest historical importance, involving perhaps twenty-five million young men, many of whom owned cameras in private life and took 'snaps' of holiday family and everyday life as a matter of course, yielded no photographic record at all except that captured by the official photographers'. This album is therefore historically important in providing a visual record of Flanders in 1915. It is believed that around four versions of the album were compiled; it is probable that Colver had films developed and then took orders for prints or allowed fellow officers to borrow negatives to produce their own set of prints. One album is in the hands of the family of one Colver's fellow officers and another is with the Regimental Museum. Many of the photographs are apparently duplicated but some appear to be unique to a particular album. The Gallipoli photographs would seem to be unique to this album. Colver would have been subject to censorship but given that his superior officers appear in a number of the photographs it seems they were unconcerned. The book 'Images of War: Flanders 1915' by Jon Cooksey published in 2005 was based on these albums. The images themselves illustrate all aspects of trench life before the Somme and unofficial photography was banned. A number of photographs record the front line in the Ypres Salient on the banks of the Yser Canal where the battalion took over trenches captured from the Germans. This stretch of the line marked the extreme left flank of the entire British line in France, a point where the German positions were both to the front and the side. Colver was killed on 19 December 1915 when the Germans used phosgene gas for the first time. The last photograph from the Flanders section of the album is of Colver's original grave in Bard Cottage cemetery, this must have been taken after the war by colleague or family member. Edward Colver served with the 1/1 West Riding Field Company, Royal Engineers and was mentioned in despatches. His photographs include a number on board ship, Alexandria, views towards Gallipoli and again a photograph of his grave.

Twelve colour tissue guarded illustrations and eighteen black and white illustrations. All illustrations in good condition. Bindings are brittle yet holding. Clean and tidy copy some foxing of front end pages. Dust jacket: Dust jacket illustrated with holly, red berries and image of Scrooge. Spine is illustrated. Rear of the dust jacket has listed works of Arthur Rackham from A Christmas Carol to The Ingoldsby Legends published by Heinemann. Jacket is browned and large section of the spine is missing with chipped corners and edges.

Former owner's bookplate on front fly leaf, else a fine, bright copy in dust jacket with light professional restoration to the spine ends, corners, and extremities. Illustrations by James Montgomery Flagg. A young woman boards a transatlantic ocean liner under an assumed name and it soon becomes clear that she is fearful of being pursued. It seems the girl has in her possession a rare antique jewel that belonged to a famous collection and now has been stolen. Is she guilty of theft or is there some other explanation?

Original purple cloth, spine and front cover with pictorial designs and lettering in gilt, illustrated endpapers, top edge purple. Housed in a purple quarter morocco solander box. Colour frontispiece and 11 colour plates with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, all by Rackham. Spine considerably faded with dulling of gilt, extremities rubbed, top edge faded, still a good copy. First trade edition. Presentation copy to the artist's sister-in-law Fanny Starkie, inscribed on the half-title with an original ink drawing by Arthur Rackham of a boy and a dog in the rain, "To Fannie [sic] with Best Christmas Wishes from Edyth & Arthur Rackham Xmas 1915", the inscription in Arthur's hand except for Edyth's signature. The exact status of this impression is unclear. The bibliographies state that the first impression of the trade edition is in green cloth with pictorial designs and lettering in dark green, with the frontispiece mounted on dark green paper (in our experience, this is always white) and the date 1915 on the title verso. This copy has purple cloth with designs and lettering in gilt and the frontispiece printed directly on plate paper, supposedly signs of later issue, yet with the date 1915 on the title verso. Nevertheless, the book was published in 1915 for the Christmas market and Rackham's dated inscription gives it considerable authority as an early issue.

        A Boy's Will

      Henry Holt and Company, New York 1915 - This is a jacketed first American edition, first state, of the author’s first published book. This first American edition was published in a first printing of 750 copies in April 1915, one month after the American edition of North of Boston. The American publication order reversed that of the preceding British publications of 1913 and 1914, respectively. First state is confirmed by the misprint "Aind" on the final line of p. 14, corroborated by white (as opposed to buff) endpapers. (See Crane, A2.1, p.11). Both glassine and printed dust jackets on tan paper have been reported for the first edition. This dust jacket is the earliest of the three states identified by Clymer & Green, with the "75 Cents" price on the spine and front cover and a blank rear cover. Condition of the book is good plus in a good dust jacket. The blue cloth binding is square and tight with bright gilt, but modestly soiled with some mottling at the front cover fore edge and minor wear to extremities. The contents remain clean and free of spotting, but age toned. The sole previous ownership mark is the tiny sticker of a Boston bookseller affixed to the lower front free endpaper. The dust jacket shows only minor chipping to the spine ends and upper rear panel, but suffers a full split at the front hinge and a horizontal closed tear at mid-spine. The jacket spine is toned and scuffed, albeit with all print still clearly legible. The front and rear panels and flaps are clean. The jacket’s front hinge separation is quite unobtrusive with the jacket now protected beneath a removable, archival quality clear cover. Iconic American poet and four-time Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Lee Frost (1874-1963), the quintessential poetic voice of New England, was actually born in San Francisco and first published in England. When Frost was eleven, his newly widowed mother moved east to Salem, New Hampshire, to resume a teaching career. There Frost swiftly found his poetic voice, infused by New England scenes and sensibilities. Promising as both a student and writer, Frost nonetheless dropped out of both Dartmouth and Harvard, supporting himself and a young family by teaching and farming. Ironically, it was a 1912 move to England with his wife and children – "the place to be poor and to write poems" – that finally catalyzed his recognition as a noteworthy American poet. The manuscript of A Boy’s Will was completed in England and accepted for publication by David Nutt on 1 April 1913. "Yeats pronounced the poetry "the best written in America for some time" and Frost received "two extraordinary tributes in the Nation and the Chicago Dial and a superb review in the Academy." (ANB) A convocation of critical recognition, introduction to other writers, and creative energy supported the English publication of Frost’s second book, North of Boston, in 1914, after which "Frost’s reputation as a leading poet had been firmly established in England, and Henry Holt of New York had agreed to publish his books in America." Accolades met his return to America at the end of 1914 and by 1917 a move to Amherst "launched him on the twofold career he would lead for the rest of his life: teaching whatever "subjects" he pleased at a congenial college and "barding around," his term for "saying" poems in a conversational performance." (ANB) By 1924 he had won the first of his eventual four Pulitzer Prizes for poetry (1931, 1937, and 1943). Frost spent the final decade and a half of his life as "the most highly esteemed American poet of the twentieth century" with a host of academic and civic honors to his credit. Two years before his death he became the first poet to read in the program of a U.S. Presidential inauguration (Kennedy, January 1961). The last of Doyle's full-length Sherlock Holmes novels, "The Valley of Fear" focuses on a proxy clash between Holmes and Moriarty over the question of whether Mr Douglas will live or die.

Although he disliked photography at the time, he found it necessary to use it in his journalistic assignments and soon came to appreciate the medium's unique aesthetic qualities. In his remarkable oeuvre of photographs, Brassai imbues even the most inanimate images with a warm sense of human life. The present early collection of drawings, shows the artist honing his eye through keen observation of detail and nuance, precisely the qualities which would inform the work for which he is today best remembered. <br style="">

        Ampio ed interessante carteggio costituito da diciassette lettere della primogenita di Giuseppe Garibaldi e Francesca Armosino di cui otto autografe firmate, le altre dattiloscritte con firma autografa, di cui una diretta all'Avvocato Giuseppe Leti, le rimanenti ai figli dello stesso. Datate tra il 1915 e il 1955 sono scritte da Ardenza e Caprera. Di particolare interesse la nota scritta al verso di una cart. postale fotografica, che recita: "Sono nata a Caprera il 16 febbraio 1867. Questa istantanea mi è stata fatta qui, nel mio giardino il 22 settembre 1946. Mi dispiace che non si possano vedere i pochissimi fili bianchi che ho fra i capelli che - dato la mia età - avrei voluto tutti candidi". Di seguito alcuni tra i passi più significativi dell'intero insieme, nel quale si tratta prevalentemente della collaborazione di Clelia ad alcuni scritti in onore dell'Avvocato Leti. "Ho ricevuto tempo fa il bellissimo volume di Suo Padre per il quale tanto, tanto la ringrazio. Era un'opera che ancora non conoscevo...Oggi ho ricevuto le bozze della sua monografia e mi impegno a mandarle quanto prima le bozze a cui Leti tanto tiene. E' una gioia per me poter parlare di Suo padre al quale ero legata da sentimenti di sincera e profonda amicizia.       en feuilles 44 pp. in-4 ou in-8, souvent découpées, montées sur papier et annotées. Impressionnant exemple du travail à quatre mains d'Edouard Pichon avec son oncle Jacques Damourette. Il s'agit d'un "rapport préliminaire" de Pichon datant de 1915, remis en forme et annoté vers 1940-1943 par son oncle Jacques Damourette. "Le plan de l'EGLF [Essai de Grammaire de la langue française] comprenait une partie sur l'utilisation artistique de la langue française, partie qui, à la suite du développement des travaux, n'a pas été exécutée. L'article sur la rime que l'on va lire est un rapport préliminaire écrit par Pichon en vue de cette partie de l'ouvrage. Il m'a paru intéressant de le mettre sous les yeux du lecteur, sans changer le texte de Pichon, tout en faisant observer que ce rapport est une oeuvre de jeunesse (il a été écrit aux armées le 1er janvier 1915, l'auteur avait donc 24 ans). C'est ce qui explique l'absolutisme de certaines idées." Il semble que Damourette soit mort sans avoir pu totalement finir le travail de mise en forme. A notre connaissance cet article est inédit.Personnage d'une grande richesse, d'une infinie curiosité et très complexe, Edouard Pichon est un contemporain et - par son intérêt pour le langage - un précurseur de Lacan, qui lui reprendra - entre autres - le concept de forclusion. Il est l'un des membres fondateurs du groupe de L'Evolution psychiatrique et de la Société Psychanalytique de Paris (dont il fut président de 1935 à 1937). Avec son oncle Jacques Damourette, il est l'auteur d'un monumental Essai de Grammaire française dont la publication s'étala sur près de 30 ans. Il fut également fervent maurrassien tout en étant dreyfusard, et le gendre de Pierre Janet sans être janetien. (Voir à son sujet, E. Near fine in blue linen covered boards with gilt text stamping on the spine and gilt text within double borders on the front board. A small octavo measuring 7 5/8 by 5 1/8 inches with the cloth at the head and heel of the spine slightly rubbed and with faint deprivations due to silverfish having consumed small bits of starch from the cloth at the forward 1 1/2" of the front board. One of only 750 copies printed. This is the very uncommon first American printing of Frost's first book. It has the issue point of the word "Aind" on the last line of page 14 which was corrected to "And" in the second printing of the title. The other typo in both this printing and in the British printing, which was not corrected until 1923, is located on page 62 line 16 where "witch-hazel" is appears as "wich-hazel". A tight, clean and handsome copy with strong joints and hinges and absolutely no prior ownership markings.(Crane, A2.1)

Collection quasi-complète du Crapouillot de la Grande guerre, du n°1 (août 1915) au n° 10 et dernier (janvier 1919). Trois livraisons manquent : IV et VI de la première année et I de la deuxième année. Le Crapouillot est sous-titré Gazette poilu (n° I-VIII), Gazette des Bon'hommes (n°IX), puis à partir du n°X, Feuille de guerre. Rappelons que le crapouillot est le non donné par les poilus au nouveau mortier mis au point par les Français. Premier journal des tranchées créé un an après le début de la guerre par le caporal Jean Galtier-Boissière (1891-1966). Son but était le soutien moral des troupes engagés sur le front, mais aussi de ceux de « l'arrière », tout en les informant des avancées des combats. La publication était en décalage des autres publications des tranchées ; son ton était certes humoristique, mais aussi critique et volontiers ironique et satirique. Le premier numéro porte en bandeau : « Tout collaborateur mis hors de combat sera aussitôt remplacé par son suivant de garde ». Plusieurs numéros furent caviardés par la censure. Au bas de la dernière page de chaque livraison, on peut lire : « Le Crapouillot n'a pas d'offciers supérieurs comme critiques militaires, ainsi que ses confrères parisiens ; la Gazette du front se contente de poilus, mais tous ses reporters sont en première ligne ». Illustrations par Galtier-Boissière, mais aussi R. Poughéon, Guy Arnoux, A. D. de Segonzac, Jean-Louis Forain, Dulac. Le siège social était localisé dans une tranchée de l'Artois et pendant toute la durée de la guerre, copies et dessins furent confiés au vaguemestre qui les adressait au père de Galtier-Boissière, médecin à l'arrière, lequel se chargeait de l'impression. Très bon exemplaire en feuilles de cette revue de toute rareté ; Le bas de la page de la livraison numérotée 8 de la troisième année a été découpé.

      Hi, This lot is a 1915 Original Hardback Wisden in Good+ Condition, This Wisden is a very nice book, the hinges have been repaired which goes into the pastedown some what but the front board is nice with great gilt , a kncok to the bottom right corner, the spine looks like it has had a tocuh up but looks pretty decent, the rear board is great. Repaird front hinge but rear hinge may be original, some darkness but intenrally pretty nice with great photoplate. Very cheap due to the hinge repair.

SCARCE FIRST EDITION IN VERY PLEASING CONDITION. A shining example of what you get when a true masterpiece of literature is complemented by one of the world’s greatest book illustrators. An inspiring combination. Dickens writes of A Christmas Carol in his preface: “I have endeavoured in this Ghostly little book to raise the Ghost of an Idea which shall not put my readers out of humour with themselves, with each other, with the season, or with me. May it haunt their house pleasantly, and no one wish to lay it.” Surely, the author would be pleased with the perennial delight his little Christmas tale has stirred in the hearts and imaginations of generations of readers.
