        The Log of the Snark

Macmillan Company, New York 1915 - The Log of the Snark London, Charmian Kittredge (1871-1955) Published by Macmillan Company, New York (1915) First Edition. Macmillan Company, New York, 1915. Original Cloth. Book Condition: Very Fine condition, Small Octavo. 487+ 5 pages of adverts with 20 photo plates, including frontispiece. Issued in light blue cloth decorated and lettered in gilt. Very light age tone to un-trimmed fore-edge and title page, else a very clean and crisp copy. Charmian Kittredge London (November 27, 1871-January 14, 1955) was Jack London's second wife. After divorcing Bess Maddern London in 1904, London married Charmian Kittredge the following year. Biographer Russ Kingman called Charmian "Jack's soul-mate, always at his side, and a perfect match." She was the author of several books about her life with Jack London: The Log of the Snark, Our Hawaii and The Book of Jack London. The last is considered by scholars to be an important but flawed source of biographical information on London: Clarice Stasz calls it "an uneven account that omits Jack's illegitimacy, yet has surprisingly frank information nonetheless concerning his personality." Their relationship became the subject of a book, Clarice Stasz' American Dreamers. The couple had no children who survived them. One died soon after being born, and another pregnancy ended in a miscarriage. Shortly after the death of Jack London, Charmian had an affair with Harry Houdini. A PBS source cites an Houdini biographer, saying: Most of the evidence of their affair, convincingly reconstructed by Houdini biographer Kenneth Silverman, comes from brief entries in Charmian’s diaries. They saw each other over several weeks early in 1918 while Charmian was living in New York, where Houdini was starring in the patriotic World War I extravaganza, "Cheer Up." Charmian wrote that after they saw each other a few times, Houdini made a "declaration" that "rather shakes me up." They became intimate a short time later. She wrote that one visit by Houdini had "stirred me to the deep," and that he apparently felt the same, declaring, "I’m mad about you," and "I give all of myself to you." Throughout, she refers to him alternately as "Magic," her "Magic Man," or "Magic Lover." As intense as it apparently was, their attachment did not last long. Charmian, the "New Woman" whose marriage to London had included open sexual experimentation, never stopped seeing other men. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Travels in Alaska.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1915. First edition. Octavo, original grey cloth lettered in white, color illustrated paper cover label, top edge gilt. Illustrated with several plates from photographs, including frontispiece with tissue-guard. Fine in the rare original dust jacket, which is well worn with chips and wear. Travels in Alaska, by John Muir, reflects Muir's exuberance for life and almost everything he encountered in his many travels. In addition to being an ecologist and traveler, John Muir was a botanist and geologist, a fact which readers will be reminded of through his contemplations of the southeast Africa flora and the activity of glaciers. Travels in Alaska is John Muir's journal of his 1879, 1880, and 1890 trips to southeast Alaska's glaciers, rivers, and temperate rain forests. For Muir, the wilderness was a medicine or spiritual tonic. Physical impediments and frailties faded into the background when he was alone in the wilderness. Much of "Travels in Alaska" is given to glaciers, including their descriptions, their influence on the landscape, their geological record, the discovery of new glaciers, and other characteristics of these moving rivers of ice. When describing glaciers, John Muir offers descriptive powers unequaled among authors on nature, Time and space almost have no medium in this publication, utterly lost when gazing upon a glacier.

Board game, "You will laugh too if you KANGAROO!"

Kangaroo Corporation; Gray Lith. Co.,, New York: 1915 - A large laughing female kangaroo with a joey in her pouch who says "Be Happy at Home!" to another young kangaroo asking "Why such joy?" decorates the triangular box lid of this amusing bright orange and purple 1915 peg board game. The playing board itself is framed with the text, "You can't be blue if you KANGAROO. No trouble troubles you."The unusual triangular box features three kangaroos on the top lid, with edges decorated with horse shoes and shamrocks on a purple ground. The instructions are printed on the under side of the top lid, including the offer of a $500 reward. The Kangaroo Corporation offered the prize for any correct solution to the game, which involves landing the King in Goal No. 14. "The above prize to be awarded January 15, 1916." 25 numbered holes on the board, with all but one hole for small wooden pegs. 11 pegs are lacking. The object of the game was to jump holes so that only the King remained in hole number 14, in the manner of Chinese checkers. Each side of the triangular box measures 9 1/4". The box printed by Gray Lith. Co. N.Y.;1915 copyright by the Kangaroo Corporation. The top lid with some fading, a scratch in the lower right corner, rubbed at edges, corners repaired with sticky tape. The board interior with color more vivid, just a bit of wear around numbered peg holes.

Old Calabria [Association Copy Owned by The Misses Wolcott-Perry of Capri]

vi, [2], 352, 15, [1] pp. 8vo. An Italian travelogue by the British writer best known for his novel South Wind. "First published in 1915, Old Calabria is one of the most comprehensive and exciting accounts of adventure travel in this century. Captivated by the cheerfully pagan quality of the mezzogiorno, as he understood it, Douglas plunged into Calabria, the southernmost and most backward part of Italy (a province that was still largely devoid of any form of modern amenity). He endured extremes of climate, scaled mountains, rode in rickety carriages driven by villainous coachmen, and traversed remote stretches of country where murderous groups of banditti were known to roam." First edition, second state (plain endpapers, publisher's ad precedes frontispiece, 16-page publisher's catalog bound in following text -- the first state included map endpapers and no catalog). Woolf A16a. One of only 1000 copies printed in 1915. Spine slightly faded, moderately foxed, ink name, address, date, and owner bookplate on front endpapers - the former owners were 'The Misses Wolcott-Perry', which would be Kate and Saidee, and the address listed is Villa Torricella, Marina Grande di Capri, on April 28th, 1915. The Wolcott-Perrys were a wealthy lesbian couple who moved from the American midwest to the Italian countryside. Capri, according to Norman Douglas's contemporary and acquaintance Compton Mackenzie who wrote about it in his Extraordinary Women, was a popular destination for homosexuals at the time. Mackenzie wrote about the Wolcott-Perrys specifically in his novel Vestal Fire, featuring them as protagonists, along with... Norman Douglas, who also lived in Capri. We have here, then, an interesting association copy showing the relationship of some of the prominent residents of Capri, and perhaps lending credibility to the common assertion that Douglas was also a homosexual (his relationship with fellow author Graham Greene, together with allegations of sexual advances made on Italian teenage boys, have fueled continued speculation on the matter). London: Martin Secker, 1915. First Edition. Collectible; Good/No Jacket.

Photograph album documenting a hunting and fishing trip to Georgian Bay led by Native American guides

Georgian Bay, Ontario, 1915. Album. Very good. This 8" x 5.5" burlap-covered album contains 45 photographs (3.5" square), each glue-mounted one to a page. The album cover is features a water scene and the title "Georgian Bay." The photographs and pages are in nice shape. The album shows some wear, and the cover decoration has faded. All but three of the photographs show a group of five tourists vacationing at Georgian Bay. Nine of the photographs show a family of Native American guides (probably Ojibway) leading the tourists on camping, canoeing, hunting, and fishing trips. The other three photographs show the four of the tourists visiting Niagara Falls. The images include: One of the guides unpacking a signal canon, * Two guides watching as one prepares to fire the canon, * A guide in the pilot house of a small vessel, * A guide walking behind one of the tourists who had killed a pair of gamebirds, * A guide starting a fire to cook the gamebirds, * Guides posing and in other background shots, * The tourist washing clothes, swimming, portaging, canoeing, catching fish, posing with strings of fish, etc. * Tourists posing in front of Niagara Falls as another photographer on their right takes a photograph of the falls with a camera on a tripod. This is an important visual record of Native American commerce in the early 1900s shortly after Georgian Bay a popular recreation destination for Canadian and American tourists. As noted at the Southeast Georgian Bay Chamber of Commerce website, "Hunters and fishers made annual expeditions led by local Ojibwe guides to Six Mile Lake or Georgian Bay. From 1915 to the 1950s, guide boats were a daily sight on the Severn River." Scarce. Although Georgian Bay outdoor recreation photos can be found individually and family photograph albums, entire albums documenting a single hunting and fishing vacation less common. Most uncommon, though is an album that features a number of images of Native American guides. As of 2017, none are in the trade, none are listed at OCLC, and no auction records appear at ABPC or the Rare Book Hub.

        Incredible signed photograph

1915. unbound. This 10 x 8-inch black-and-white action close-up shows a frontal image of Johnson in training, dressed in a suit with a matching beret and oxford shoes, running as he holds a cane in his right hand. No place, no date, circa 1915. Jogging beside him is a Caucasian boxer/trainer with a heavyweight build, also dressed nicely. Boldly signed by Johnson in black fountain pen with exceptional contrast. Condition: There is one heavy vertical crease that passes through the left arm of the trainer/boxer, but it does not detract from the overall integrity and importance of the image. There is also some surface wrinkling throughout. Rarity of this image: Jack Johnson is rare in vintage 10 x 8-inch signed photographs, and we believe this image to be unique. Documentary producer Ken Burns, having spent hundreds of hours doing research for his project on Jack Johnson (during which he and his staff viewed hundreds of images of the boxer), could not recall previously seeing it. The image, with both men smiling, is a very powerful statement because it dispenses the myth that Johnson was a racist, when in fact he had white trainers, sparing partners, and girlfriends. The first African-American world heavyweight champion (1908 - 1915).

[Volume 12 of] The Golden Bough: Bibliography and General Index

London: Macmillan and Co, Limited,, 1915. Third edition. Octavo. Original dark green cloth, titles gilt to spine, large rectangular gilt block of mistletoe tracery on front board. With the typographical dust jacket. Boards faintly discoloured, letter slightly tanned. A very good copy in a bright jacket with vertical creases where once folded inside the book. Volume 12 of the definitive third edition of Frazer's classic work of social anthropology. With an autograph letter signed by the author and dated 19 February 1921 pasted onto the front free endpaper, in which Frazer kindly submits to a reader's request, "I have pleasure in enclosing six dated signatures and hope that they will answer your purpose". First published as a two-volume work in 1890 the Golden Bough was expanded to 12 volumes in the third edition (a supplementary thirteenth volume, entitled Aftermath, was published in 1936). "Frazer's true subject is nothing less than humanity's long upward struggle towards an understanding of itself and the world. In Frazer's view that movement towards the light began in earliest times with the priest?king employing magic to compel the gods to do his bidding, followed by a religious stage in which humans admit their powerlessness and now beseech rather than command the gods. Thus for Frazer religion is a necessary stage in mental evolution, but one that is based on mistaken premisses; it has now in turn been superseded by a world-view based on rationality: positive science. In focusing on the pattern of the dying and reviving god that lay at the heart of the religions of the ancient Mediterranean, while never mentioning Christianity, Frazer was more than a little disingenuous. In truth he was engaged all the while in a covert campaign against religion in general and Christianity in particular and may perhaps be seen, along with H. G. Wells, as the most important exponent of secularism in the twentieth century" (ODNB). Scarce thus.
