Contribucion al conocimiento de los centros nerviosos de los insectos." Offprint from Trabajos del Laboratorio de Investigaciones biologicas de la Universidad de Madrid, XIII, 1915

Imprenta de Hijos de Nicolas Moya, Madrid 1915 - With numerous text illustrations and 2 folding color plates. Original printed wrappers, edges lightly faded, a small repair. Presentation copy with "Hommage des auteurs" written above the title on the front wrapper. First edition, first printing, of this rare work by the father of neuroscience. A collaboration between Cajal and his brilliant student and colleague, Domingo Sánchez (1860-1947), they here examine the central nervous system of insects with particular attention to the retina and optic center of the brain. Overwhelmed by the complexity of the retinal structure in insects, Cajal declared that in comparison to "these apparently humble representatives of life . . . the retina of the bird or the higher mammal appears as something coarse, rude, and deplorably elementary" (Horns, 577). In fact, it was in studying this membrane that he famously admitted that "my faith in Darwinism weakened, being amazed and confounded by the supreme constructive ingenuity revealed not only in the retina and in the dioptric apparatus of the vertebrates but even in the meanest insect eye" (Horns, 576).Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934), the eminent Spanish histologist, was fundamental to modern neurological research, especially his work in mapping the neurones and their structural interrelations in the retina, brain and spinal cord. He shared the Nobel Prize in 1906 with Golgi for their work on the structure of the nervous system.

        Anne of the Island

Boston: L. C. Page & Company, 1915. Undetermined. near fine. 1st edition Eighth Impression November 1915. [viii] 326 + (4), 14pp catalogue at rearpp. Octavo. Original publisher's tan cloth with titles in gilt to spine and front board, with illustrated frontis with tissue guard. Spine a bit dull. Small bump to middle of spine. Top edge a bit dust soiled, otherwise a very nice, clean copy. A spectacular association copy, being inscribed and signed by Montgomery to her new Canadian publisher, George Stewart of McClelland, Goodchild and Stewart. Montgomery had decided to give the Canadian rights to McClelland[...] and her American publisher, Page, who held the world rights was very upset. Montgomery's association with Page deteriorated and she switched to the American Publisher, Frederick A. Stokes. The inscription reads "To Mr. Stewart with the authors good wishes and the hope that he may never lack a "kindred spirit" Very Cordially yours L.M. Montgomery MacDonald August 15 1916". The book was obviously inscribed at the same time as her the Watchman and Other Poems was being published by the new firm. Also laid in loosely is the 4 page prospectus for the Page edition of Anne of the Island. It is difficult to imagine a more interesting Canadian association copy of the book! Definitely unique.         PSA slabbed Buffalo Bill signed Circus show ticket

n.p., c. 1915. 5.5" x 2". "William Cody signs a colorful ""Sells-Floto Circus Buffalo Bill"" ticket, 5.5"" x 2"" circa 1915, and boldly signed in graphite by William Cody as ""WF Cody"". The full ticket is PSA/DNA authenticated, graded, and slabbed as a NM - MT 8 condition. The original precursor Wild West shows were traveling vaudeville performances in the United States and Europe. The first and prototypical Wild West show was Buffalo Bill's formed in 1883 and lasting until 1913. Perhaps part of the popularity of Wild West shows can be attributed to the feeling of celebration and conquest they evoked. They celebrated the achievement of the frontier movement as being the most important accomplishment in American history. The shows were a winning combination of history, patriotism, and adventure which managed to create an enduring spirit of the ""unsettled"" west and capture audience’s hearts throughout America and Europe. William Cody's success with his shows ended with bankruptcy in July of 1913, however Tammen hired Cody to perform in his show and renamed the circus the ""Sells Floto and Buffalo Bill Circus"" for the seasons of 1914 and 1915. Buffalo Bill grew up on the frontier and loved his way of life. As he got older, some of his titles he earned included buffalo hunter, U.S. Army scout and guide, and showman, as well as Pony Express Rider, Indian fighter, and even author. Whatever Cody’s titles, he was destined for fame. His track of fame began as with his reputation as a master buffalo hunter. While hunting buffalo for pay to feed railroad workers, he shot and killed 11 out of 12 buffalo, earning him his nickname and show name “Buffalo Bill.” At the turn of the twentieth century, William F. Cody was known as ‘the greatest showman on the face of the earth’”. Cody had full domination of the Wild West show business.By 1929 the Sells Floto Circus was part of the American Circus Corporation (which at the time consisted of 4 circus brands). It ultimately was acquired by John Ringling for $1.7 million creating a monopoly of traveling circuses in America. Promoted as The Greatest Show on Earth, this traveling circus heralded success for over a 100 years (The original family ran the circus until 1967 when it was sold to Feld Entertainment who took it public in 1969 where it changed hands numerous times). The Humane Society was a longtime critic of the shows animal welfare practices, stating: ""It's just not acceptable any longer to cart wild animals from city to city and have them perform silly yet coercive stunts"". The Ringling Bros. circus will be closing their doors as of May in 2017.A wonderful example, and scarce in this condition. "

The book is from the library Robert Lewis Wise (author, minister, genealogist) and he signed the ffep and noted "from my uncle Charles". The letter is address to Frederich (Wise) not Robert's brother but Humphrey's uncle. The book is clean, tight, square and unmarked. It has 167, bright, clear pages, gilt edged at the top, (with a red silk bookmark) bound in flexible boards covered in brown leather. The spine is sunned and the edges are rubbed with a few scuffs. The letter is from camp at Winchester and is to thank uncle Frederich for the gift of mittens and for the continuing support of he and his family. At one point in the letter, Humphreys notes that if captured he would probably be able to bribe a 'reb which is telling because he had just returned (Oct, 1864) from leave after a period as a rebel prisoner of war. Humpreys was chaplain of the Second Massachusetts cavalry (with its fighting Californians, the Cal 100 etc.). After this letter the Second Mass would soldier through the Shenandoah and eventually take part in the Appomattox campaign. Humpreys published this book shortly before becoming incapacitated in 1919. He died in 1921. There is also laid in a page of poetry over the words "with the love and best wishes of your friend Richard C. Humphreys" name under the dates 1880 1887. It is a quote from Macbeth Remember, if you are a real man, you will show it your life. Be not only good, but good for something. "I dare all that may become a man: who dares do more is none" and My boys let's grasp each other's hand Again before we part, And Bless the eight full, happy years We've spent with loving heart. Let's seek for light. for truth. for love That time can ne'er destroy; :et's do our duty faithfully And fill our hearts with joy.
