        The Log of the Snark

New York: Macmillan Company, 1915 487+[5 ad] pages with 20 photo plates, including frontispiece. Small octavo (7 1/2" x 5 3/4")issued in light blue cloth decorated and lettered in gilt. Advance review copy with circular perforated stamp stating such on title page. First Edition. Charmian Kittredge London (November 27, 1871-January 14, 1955) was Jack London's second wife. After divorcing Bess Maddern London in 1904, London married Charmian Kittredge the following year. Biographer Russ Kingman called Charmian "Jack's soul-mate, always at his side, and a perfect match." She was the author of several books about her life with Jack London: The Log of the Snark, Our Hawaii and The Book of Jack London. The last is considered by scholars to be an important but flawed source of biographical information on London: Clarice Stasz calls it "an uneven account that omits Jack's illegitimacy, yet has surprisingly frank information nonetheless concerning his personality." Their relationship became the subject of a book, Clarice Stasz' American Dreamers. The couple had no children who survived them. One died soon after being born, and another pregnancy ended in a miscarriage. Shortly after the death of Jack London, Charmian had an affair with Harry Houdini. A PBS source cites an Houdini biographer, saying: Most of the evidence of their affair, convincingly reconstructed by Houdini biographer Kenneth Silverman, comes from brief entries in Charmian’s diaries. They saw each other over several weeks early in 1918 while Charmian was living in New York, where Houdini was starring in the patriotic World War I extravaganza, "Cheer Up." Charmian wrote that after they saw each other a few times, Houdini made a "declaration" that "rather shakes me up." They became intimate a short time later. She wrote that one visit by Houdini had "stirred me to the deep," and that he apparently felt the same, declaring, "I’m mad about you," and "I give all of myself to you." Throughout, she refers to him alternately as "Magic," her "Magic Man," or "Magic Lover." As intense as it apparently was, their attachment did not last long. Charmian, the "New Woman" whose marriage to London had included open sexual experimentation, never stopped seeing other men. Condition: Minor wear at extremities, Embossed ownership stamp also on title page, small number and letter 4A at front end paper corner; else near fine without jacket. . Review Copy. Original Cloth. Very Good to Fine. Small Octavo.

Die Entstehung der Kontinente und Ozeane

Braunschweig: Vieweg, 1915. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (210x135 mm). iv, [2], 94 pp., 20 illustr. in text. Three-quarter cloth with paper label to spine, interior clean and unfoxed, library ink stamps to title-page. Provenance: from the library of Alfred Wegener's institute in Marburg (Physikalisches Institut der Philipps-Universität). Interesting association copy in fine condition. ----First edition in book form of the famous work on the continental drift, the mainwork of Wegener. The text appeared first in Petermanns Mitteilungen 1912. Later editions appeared in 1920,1922 and 1929; foreign editions after 1922. Wegener began his university career at the physical institute of the University Marburg in 1909, where he worked until 1919. After his habilitation in the fields of astronomy, meteorology and cosmic physics in Marburg, he became the director of the local observatory in 1910 and in parallel worked as a lecturer at the physical institute. Wegener became widely known for his pioneering theory on continental drift, which he published in two papers in 1912, both entitled "Die Entstehung der Kontinente" (The origin of continents).. Although it was thought ludicrous at first, it has since been confirmed and is now quite acclaimed. In 1915 he published a book-length extension of his work on continental displacements now entitled "Die Entstehung der Kontinente und Ozeane." Because of the First World War, Wegener's book went unnoticed outside Germany. In 1922, however, a third (revised) edition was translated into English, French, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish, pushing Wegener's theory of continental drift to the forefront of debate in the earth sciences. The present first edition is much rarer than the journal issue. Near Fine.

Voyage of H.M.S. 'Pandora' Despatched to Arrest the Mutineers of the 'Bounty' in the South Seas, 1790-91 Being the Narratives of Captain Edward Edwards, R.N., the Commander, and George Hamilton, the Surgeon.

London: Francis Edwards, 1915. Octavo, folding map; original maroon cloth, gilt lettering to spine. The standard modern edition, including the captain's report on the voyage of the Pandora, printed for the first time, with introduction and notes by Basil Thomson. This edition includes the account of the surgeon of the Pandora, Hamilton, which was first published in 1793 and is rare today. However, this work is particularly significant for the inclusion of the many reports and letters penned by Captain Edward Edwards, who was commissioned with orders to find the mutineers, and whose conduct was vilified in the eighteenth-century press. This was the first time any of Edwards' reports were printed, and as a result this is an important contribution to the study of the Bounty mutiny. It has not been reprinted. Front board a little flecked otherwise a very nice copy.

On the Quantum Theory of Radiation and the Structure of the Atom.

First edition [London: Taylor & Francis], 1915. Author's presentation offprint, inscribed by Bohr to Prof. Biilmann, of this seminal paper in which Bohr introduced the concept of 'stationary state'.Soon after the completion of Bohr's great trilogy on atomic constitution had appeared in November 1913, Moseley began to carry out experiments on X-ray spectra. Among other things, he found that the frequency of the K?-line followed a Balmer-type formula similar to those which had inspired Bohr to develop his theory of atomic structure. In this paper Bohr attempts an explanation of this formula, refuting Moseley's suggestion that the lines might be caused by several electrons jumping simultaneously (See Pais 182). "Moseley was later killed in a war-related incident, a death that shocked Bohr and the entire scientific community.... coping with the calamity of his colleague's death and the constant pressures created by the war, Bohr had to frequently revise and refine his atomic model in light of new discoveries. One significant paper, 'On the Quantum Theory of Radiation and the Structure of the Atom,' added more specific details about atomic states. For example, Bohr had earlier made the argument that electrons could jump from one orbit to another as energy was emitted or absorbed. In this paper, he theorized that an atom possesses stationary states in which energy was neither emitted nor absorbed. Any emission or absorption that did occur, such as might induce an electron to jump, would correspond to the transition between two stationary states." ( "Franck and Hertz unwittingly provided an independent confirmation of the concept of stationary state. In 1914 they observed an energy threshold in the electron-stopping power of mercury vapor. This threshold, Bohr explained the following year [in the present paper], corresponded to a transition between the normal state and another (first excited) stationary state of the mercury atom (and not, as Franck and Hertz had originally thought, to the ionization of the atom)." ( Offprint from the Philosophical Magazine, vol. xxx, September 1915, pp. [i], 394-415 [1:blank], 8vo (222 x 145 mm), original printed orange wrappers, with inscription in Bohr's hand 'Hr. Prof. E. Biilmann // ærbødigst fra Forf.', with numbering to the upper left corner of the front wrapper, from the library of the Danish chemist Prof. Einar Biilmann (1873-1946).

Durch die wirtschaftlichen Probleme der Kriegs- und Nachkriegszeit sah sich M. nach und nach genötigt, die noch bei ihm verbliebenen Teile seiner Sammlungen über den Kunstmarkt zu veräußern. (vgl. dazu Denscher, Bernhard. Der Plakatsammler Ottokar Mascha). - DIESES OBJEKT UNTERLIEGT DER DIFFERENZBESTEUERUNG.\" Versand D: 15,00 EUR Plakat, Poster, Graphik, Österreich-Ungarn, 19./20.         Die Verwandlung.

Leipzig: Kurt Wolff Verlag,, 1915. Octavo. Original cream paper wrappers printed in red and black with an illustration by Ottomar Starke, edges uncut. With two advertisments to the rear. Housed in a red flat back cloth box made by the Chelsea Bindery. Toning to wrappers, light wear to wrapper extremities, a few small repairs to head and tail of spine, some spotting to title page, edges, and pp. 44-45, a very good copy. First edition, first printing, presumed to be one of the earliest issued. The publication of this work ? the first of Kafka's masterpieces ? was a rather confused affair. Two basic issues were intended: one in wrappers, the other bound in boards. Sales seem not to have been good and after a year or so the numerous copies remaining unsold were stamped on the title pages with the official stamp of the German censors. This copy has no stamp to the title page which suggests it is an early issue. Kafka was adamant that the illustration not depict a bug, writing in a letter to the publishing house: "The insect itself must not be illustrated by a drawing. It cannot be shown at all, not even from a distance." Unquestionably one of the most influential works of fiction produced in the 20th century.

Petrograd Bytkovskoj, () 1915 - Ocerk. Oktav. 2 Blatt, 68 Seiten, 1 Blatt.

Buck Parvin and the Movies [HOLLYWOOD FICTION]

George H. Doran Co. New York (1915) - Presumed First Edition despite no publisher's colophon. Original red cloth and illustrated dustjacket. 'H' dustjacket art. Illustrated by Arthur William Brown. Very scarce Hollywood themed novel, "its title character a Western actor who has lived many of the parts he plays, 'a moving-picture cowpuncher, acting during every waking moment.' All the stories take place at the Titan studios (possibly based on the Selig studios in Los Angeles) and feature director Jimmy Montague". [Anthony Slide, 'The Hollywood Novel'] Stories include titles about extras, a conceited stage actor, a young actress forced to perform in a water scene after pretending she can swim proficiently, an actor who loses interest in the leading lady, author's who supervise production, a wealthy woman intent on an acting career, and a film set visited by an efficiency expert. Slide erroneously dates this title as published in 1919. Had he known the correct date of 1915, this title would fall within the same year as Edward Clode's novel, The Love Story of a Movie Star, which he describes as the first Hollywood novel for adults. As Clode's novel is set in New York before the movie industry moved west to Hollywood, this may be the first novel to deal with movie making in the town synonymous with its production. Near Fine but for mild bumping to fore-edge of first several leaves, in Very Good dustjacket with shallow chipping at spine ends and flap corners, spine edges with wear, few closed tears.
