Die Verwandlung [The Metamorphosis]

Leipzig: Kurt Wolff, 1915. First edition. Near Fine. Cream-colored wrappers with folding flaps, front cover with Ottomar Starke's famous charcoal drawing of a man clutching his head in front of an open door (reminiscent of Edvard Munch's "The Scream"). Greenish-grey endpapers. Some minor creasing to bottom of spine. Small discoloration to lower left corner of front wrapper. Overall, a near fine copy of the very scarce first edition of Kafka's most famous novel. Only a thousand copies were printed. Housed in custom box. "Written between November 17 and December 7, 1912 during the fit of creative passion that also saw the birth of Das Urteil [The Judgement] and the first chapter of Der Verschollen (Der Heizer) [(The Stoker)]?This 'exceptionally repulsive story' is the most sustained work of fiction published during Kafka's lifetime and the one with which his name is most profoundly associated in the common consciousness: it is the story of Gregor Samsa's transformation into a giant insect. The strange allegory of alienation-from the self, from one's very body, from the family, and by analogy from society, the state and the whole of mankind-is one of the defining works of the twentieth-century consciousness. In his critical hierarchy of the great prose works of the Twentieth Century, Vladimir Nabokov rates Die Verwandlung second behind only James Joyce's Ulysses" (The Breon Mitchell Collection of the Works of Franz Kafka, p. 7). Dietz 25. Wronski, Kafka 12. Near Fine.

In der Trambahn (In the Streetcar)

OFFERING: A superb drypoint intaglio print created during one of Max Beckmann's most fertile printmaking periods; showing Berliners on the U-Bahn and including one of his celebrated self-portraits. The cited drypoint is from the third state of three, the only state approved by the artist, an excellent impression on handmade wove paper (velin) with full margins, the burr strong and velvety, signed in pencil in Beckmann's characteristic angular, post-1915 German script, left unnumbered, as issued. "Beckmann's print suggests a disorienting physical effect inherent in the visual experience of the modern city."[S. Alessandro, German Expressionist Prints: The Marcia and Granvil Specks Collection, p. 46] CONDITION: Fine within the plate, signature bright, parts of plate margins with the customary yellow toning, sheet margins fine. / Rear: penciled one-line note and title, customary offset yellowing corresponds to plate margins on print side. RARITY: Very Scarce. Print examples appear in the marketplace about three-four times a decade, principally in Germany. SIZE: Plate: 290 x 434 mm (11.42 x 17.09 inches) / Sheet: 380 x 540 mm / Passe de Partout: 483 x 620 mm. FORMAT: loose and sleeved for protection in a passe de partout. PRINT STATES: "Beckmann disdained preliminary drawings." [Hofmaier] One proof is known to exist for the first state in which Beckmann established the composition. Two proofs are known to exist for the second state, when many small additions were made. In the third and final state, further details were added, for which one trial proof is known to exist. 150 examples were signed by the artist and left unnumbered. Subsequently, Frank numbered 40/100 on velin and 10/50 on Japan paper. REFERENCE: Hofmaier 235. Stadt, Expressionism in German Art; Works From the McMaster Museum, p. 2. Palestine Exploration Fund Annual, 1914–1915 The Wilderness of Zin

London: by order of the Committee,, 1915. (Archaeological Report.) With a Chapter on the Greek Inscriptions by M. N. Tod. Quarto. Original dark blue quarter cloth, grey boards, titles to spine gilt and to front board in black. 37 plates to rear with tissue-guards laid in, several plans and illustrations to the text of which 7 full-page and one folding. Slightly sunned overall, corners bumped and rubbed, a few faint scuff-marks to boards, light spotting to edges and endpapers. A very good copy. First edition, First issue binding with the full stop after the date on the spine. During January and February 1914 Lawrence and Leonard Woolley (the archaeologist who would later excavate Ur), together with a British Army surveying detachment, mapped the Negev region of the Sinai Peninsula. The Negev was ruled by the Ottoman Empire, and the survey was a military venture in the guise of an archaeological expedition, preparation for the war the British believed was imminent. Publication in the respected academic journal of the Palestine Exploration Fund was a whitewash to disguise the military nature of the undertaking. The Wilderness of Zin was Lawrence's First work to appear in book form.

Genealogical and Personal History of Western Pennsylvania

Scarce History Books - Genealogical and Personal History of Western- Pennsylvania. 1,789 pages. Q. One half Morocco. New York: Lewis Historical Publishing Company, 1915. Three Volumes. First Edition. First Printing. Out of Print.Personal History of Western Pennsylvania, presents in the aggregate an amount and variety of genealogical and persona! information and portraiture unequaled by any kindred publication. No similar work concerning Western Pennsylvania has ever before been presented, and it contains a vast amount of ancestral history never before printed. The object, clearly defined and well digested, is to present in concise f(jrm the history of Western Pennsylvania Families of the Colonial Days. There are numerous voluminous histories of the State, making it unnecessary in this work to even outline its annals. What has been published, however, relates principally to civic life. The amplification necessary to complete the picture, old and nowadays, is what is supplied by these Genealogical and Personal Memoirs. In other words, while.others have written of the times, the province of this work is as a chronicle of the people who have made this magnificent region what it is. Unique in conception and treatment, this work constitutes one of the most original and permanently valuable contributions ever made to the social history of an American community. In it are arrayed in a lucid and dignified manner all the available facts regarding the ancestry, personal careers and matrimonial alliances of those who, in each succeeding generation, have been accorded leading positions in social, professional and bu.sinless life. It is not based upon, neither does it minister to, aristocratic prejudices and assumptions. On the contrary, its fundamental ideas are thoroughly American and democratic. The work everywhere conveys the lesson that distinction has been gained only by honorable public service, or by usefulness in private station, and that the development and prosperity of the region of which it treats have been dependent upon the character of its citizens, and in the stimulus which they have given to commerce, to industry, to the arts and sciences, to education and religion to all that is comprised in the highest civilization of the present day through a continual progressive doe,.Conditions: Age appropriate wear of covers, owners writings on blank front page, binding is firm, pages are clean. Collection of broadsides and pamphlets mainly supporting, some opposing, the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution granting American women the right to vote in federal elections. Broadsides and Pamphlets from state campaigns for the 19th Amendment make up the bulk of this collection with several broadsides opposing woman's suffrage. The 19th Amendment guarantees American women the right to vote, also known as suffrage. Our collection of broadsides and pamphlets derive from the period between 1919-1920 when the 19th amendment passed the House of Representatives and the Senate and was sent to the states for ratification by a 2/3 majority. The first states to ratify were Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Kansas, New York and Ohio. By March 1920, 35 states had ratified the woman's suffrage amendment. The Southern states held out against ratification, but on August 18, 1920, when Tennessee voted for ratification, the necessary majority of states was reached and American women gained th

Die Entstehung der Kontinente und Ozeane

Braunschweig: Vieweg, 1915 Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (210x135 mm). iv, [2], 94 pp., 20 illustr. in text. Three-quarter cloth with paper label to spine, interior clean and unfoxed, library ink stamps to title-page. Provenance: from the library of Alfred Wegener's institute in Marburg (Physikalisches Institut der Philipps-Universität). Interesting association copy in fine condition. ---- First edition in book form of the famous work on the continental drift, the mainwork of Wegener. The text appeared first in Petermanns Mitteilungen 1912. Later editions appeared in 1920,1922 and 1929; foreign editions after 1922. Wegener began his university career at the physical institute of the University Marburg in 1909, where he worked until 1919. After his habilitation in the fields of astronomy, meteorology and cosmic physics in Marburg, he became the director of the local observatory in 1910 and in parallel worked as a lecturer at the physical institute. Wegener became widely known for his pioneering theory on continental drift, which he published in two papers in 1912, both entitled "Die Entstehung der Kontinente" (The origin of continents).. Although it was thought ludicrous at first, it has since been confirmed and is now quite acclaimed. In 1915 he published a book-length extension of his work on continental displacements now entitled "Die Entstehung der Kontinente und Ozeane." Because of the First World War, Wegener's book went unnoticed outside Germany. In 1922, however, a third (revised) edition was translated into English, French, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish, pushing Wegener's theory of continental drift to the forefront of debate in the earth sciences. The present first edition is much rarer than the journal issue..

Travelling writer's kit with stationery and miniature globe.

Paris, ca. 1915-1925. Portable red cardboard box (28.0 x 16.9 x 14.3 cm) embossed with maroon reptile-skin patterned paper with gilt title "Papeterie" and vignette, and simple brass lock. Inside covered with decorative green-with-black-cobweb patterned paper.l An unusually well-preserved portable Parisian writing kit which, interestingly, includes a full colour miniature globe on a black wooden pedestal. It was made by "L.N. et K." in Paris, and all names are in French. Antarctica is not represented which suggests a manufacturing date before the end of the 19th century. However, the name Petrograd, for Saint Petersburg, was used between 1914 and 1924 and indicates an early 20th century production date. Other items are: wooden multicoloured penhandles; a metal nib-box, embossed "N. K. Paris", together with lose nibs in a cardboard box with printed text "Blanzy Pouré &Cie, Boulogne sur Mer, dépot à Paris", and the dates 1871-1872; a metal blotter; an ink-bottle with metal cap;p an eraser, and two compartments with blank writing paper and envelopes in several colours. The kit also includes an odd set of 35 colour-printed cards from France, the Netherlands, and some other countries, the majority of which are chocolate box cards and greeting cards from the very early 20th century. Apart from these, and the paper and envelopes, which seems to be "natural" additions, all seem to form one original ensemble. Some slight wear to the box edges and corners, otherwise a rich, attractive item.

Iconographie ou vies des hommes illustres du XVII. siecle . . . Tome premier[-second].Amsterdam, Leipzig, Johann Caspar Arkstée, Henricus Merkus, 1759. 2 volumes bound as 1. Folio. With 2 title-pages printed in red and black, each with a different engraved vignette, 1 portrait after Pieter Paul Rubens and and 124 portraits after Anthony van Dyck (several folding and 13 etched by Van Dyck himself), woodcut tailpieces. Green half morocco (ca. 1860?), richly gold-tooled spine, gilt and gauffered edges.

Mauquoy-Hendrickx I, pp. 46-49; V. Someren 62; STCN (2 copies); Szwykowski, p. 17, XV; cf. Hind, Van Dyck. His original etchings and his Iconography (Boston, 1915). Last and best edition of Antony van Dyck's famous Iconographie , containing 125 portraits of distinquished contemporaries, including Pieter Paul Rubens, Pieter Breugel, Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt, Erasmus, Maria de Medicis and Philip IV of Spain. The portraits were executed by the most eminent Antwerp engravers and etchers of their day, including Pieter de Jode, Cornelis Galle, Wenceslaus Hollar and Lucas Vorsterman. Thirteen of the portraits were etched by Van Dyck himself and "are among the most masterly plates produced in the whole history of portrait etching. In fact, in spite of the limitations of his practise of the art, Van Dyck has no rival as an etcher of portraits except Rembrandt" (Hind, p. 5). Slightly browned throughout and with an occasional minor tear in a folding plate, but otherwise in very good condition. Binding somewhat worn, with the corners slightly damaged, but still good and structurally sound.

The James Houston Eccleston Day-Book--Compiled by Samuel M. Shoemaker Jr.

Longmans, Green and Co., 4th Ave. & 30th St, New York 1915 - The JamesHouston Eccleston Day-Book, Containing a short account of his life, and readings for every day in the year chosen from his sermons.(1837-1911) Dark green boards with gold title on the cover and spine. Solidly bound and in very good condition. Slight shelf wear. Signed by Samuel Moor Shoemaker Jr. "For Col. and Mrs. Arthur Hamilton Mackie, with joyous and grateful memories of the beloved "Parson", and with the hope that we can work together to bring America and the world to the faith which ruled his life. S.M. Shoemaker, Trinity Cathedral, Newark- April 4th 1941. James Houston Eccleston had been Pastor of Trinity in Newark prior to his death. Samuel Moor Shomaker Jr's Grandfather, Samuel Moor Shoemaker, was married to Augusta Eccleston Shoemaker, James Houston Eccleston's sister. He was Samuel Moor Shoemaker Jr's Great Uncle, and an early spiritual influence on Shoemaker Jr., who passed in 1911 when Shoemaker was 17 years old. This title, published in 1915 while Shomaker was still a student at Princeton and just 21 years of age appears to be Samuel M. Shoemaker's first published work, although it is never mentioned anywhere. He went on to become a prolific writer of books achieving worldwide fame and the leader of the Oxford Group in the United States. Initially based as Rector of Calvary Church in New York City for 25 years, he then accepted a post at Calvary Church in Pittsburg. His early titles include Realizing Religion, 1921, A Young Man's View of the Ministry, 1923, Children of the Second Birth, 1927, Religion That Works, 1928, Twice-Born Ministers, 1929, If I Be Lifted Up, 1931, The Conversion of the Church, 1932, Confident Faith, 1932, Christ's Words from the Cross, 1933, The Gospel According to You, 1934. There are 17 other titles authored by Shoemaker published before his passing in 1963. He is most famous for his early ties to Frank Buchman's First Century Christian Fellowship, later re-named the Oxford Group, and his influence on Bill W., co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. In 1955 Bill W. said, "It was from Sam Shoemaker that we absorbed most of the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, steps that express the heart of AA's way of life. Dr. Silkworth gave us the needed knowledge of our illness, but Sam Shoemaker had given us the concrete knowledge of what we could do about it, he passed on the spiritual keys by which we were liberated. The early AA's got its ideas of self-examination, acknowledgment of character defects, restitution for harm done, and working with others straight from the Oxford Group and directly from Sam Shoemaker, their former leader in America, and from nowhere else." Uncommon 1915 Vachel Lindsay offering by the Rainbow Party of Illinois, in anticipation of the state's 1918 centennial. 3 Vachel Lindsay poems, a "triad", here re-issued in 16mo and (in 2 of the 3 cases) re-titled. "The Illinois City", "The Illinois Village" and "The Illinois Farmer". A clean, VG+ copy in its original green wrappers. The text --a single signature-- has come undone from its paper binding but still fits in snugly between the wrappers. An elusive, very early Vachel Lindsay item.

Travelling writer's kit with stationery and miniature globe.

      - Paris, ca. K. A SOUL ON FIRE

Toronto: Publisher in Canada for Humphrey Milford: S. B. Gundy. New York: John Lane Company. London: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1915.. Octavo, pp. [i-v] vi [vii-viii] 9-316 [317-318: ads] [319-320: blank], original pictorial olive-green cloth, front panel stamped in red and black, spine panel stamped in red. First edition, first issue. Presentation copy with signed inscription by Williams dated 21 March 1919 on front free endpaper. The recipient of the inscription, Madame Petrova, is almost certainly the actress who went by that name, Olga Petrova (born Muriel Harding in England), a successful screen actress during the teens and a stage actress and playwright afterwards. After complaints from the publisher of Florence Marryat's A SOUL ON FIRE (1898), Willams' novel was recalled and re-titled THEODORA: A SOUL ON FIRE with a canceled title page and new (plainer) binding. "Novel set in Montreal about a beautiful femme fatale, Theodora Carne, who unwittingly exercises a baleful influence on the men in her life. She may or may not be the reincarnation of a witch, but there's no question that her fiancés have a habit of dying after she reveals to them her troubling romantic history. Is it witchcraft? Mesmerism? Astral projection? Or merely some potent psychological dynamic at work? The novel ends up pointing to the last explanation but other supernatural incidents remain unexplained -- and there is the fact of all those 'accidental' deaths. A somewhat confused tale, and the lack of local color is disappointing, but the novel does have some atmospheric touches and provides fresh variations on the femme fatale theme." - Robert Eldridge. Scarborough, The Supernatural in Modern English Fiction, pp. 193-4. Reginald 15368. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978). A clean, bright, nearly fine copy. A scarce book in either issue, but especially the first. (#148184)

The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke [The Sentimental Bloke]

1st IMPRESSION. 8vo., 15.5 x 19cm, 126pp. Publisher's original green cloth & trimmed section of dust jacket laid in. Inscribed and signed to his great friend, Sir David Low, in the year of publication. The green cloth is in very good condition, noting a 1mm diameter black dot near the bottom of the front joint. The spine is a little darkened with two tiny chips at the tip of each spine end. The bottom fore edge corner of the lower board has a tiny bump, the others remain firm and square. Laid in is a 13 x 17cm section of what is believed to be the original dust jacket, and appears the same as the frontispiece. Internally, the book is in very good condition. The front free endpaper has two newspaper clippings stuck to it. One shows Hal Gye standing beside C J Dennis' memorial tablet and the other shows C J Dennis and his wife. The half title is inscribed in his characteristic green ink, as follows: 'To Dave Low / with a cobber's disrespect / C J Dennis / Nov. 9/15'. Sir David Low came to the UK from New Zealand via Australia and lodged with C J Dennis. In his autobiography (Low's Autobiography, Michael Joseph 1956) he states: "I shared a studio with Hal Gye, caricaturist, and C.J. Dennis, poet, was our inseperable. Before settling in Melbourne, I lived as a fellow-lodger with Den for a space and finished my cartoons by night on his wash-stand while he read proofs aloud in bed. After that, Hal and I took our studio, and Hal arranged to illustrate Den's book. Thus the association was confirmed". A scarce book made rare by virtue of the author's signature and inscription to a very close friend.

Ripostes of Ezra Pound : Whereto Are Appended the Complete Poetical Works of T E Hulme, With Prefatory NoteLondon

Elkin Matthews, London 1915 - 12mo. 64pp. advert page. Third issue, the only one with the Vorticist cover by Dorothy Shakespear. Corinal card covers, rubbed and spotted, Paper spine heavily worn with surface loss. Dorothy Shakespear (14 September 1886 – 8 December 1973) was an English artist. She was the daughter of novelist Olivia Shakespear and the wife of American poet Ezra Pound. One of a small number of women vorticist painters, she had art work published in the short-lived but influential literary magazine BLAST.Dorothy and Pound first met in 1909 in London, and after a long courtship the two married in 1914. They lived in Paris from 1920 until 1924, and in 1925 settled in Rapallo, Italy. In spite of her husband's 50-year affair with Olga Rudge, whom he met in Paris in the early 1920s, Dorothy stayed married to Pound. In 1926 she gave birth to a son Omar Pound, who was raised in England by her mother. By the 1930s she received a number of family bequests, making her financially independent, but lost much of her money by following Pound's advice to invest in Benito Mussolini's Fascist regime.Toward the end of World War II, Dorothy and Pound were evacuated from their home in Rapallo, and for a period she lived with Pound in Rudge's home. After the war, when Pound had been arrested for treason and incarcerated on grounds of insanity in Washington, D.C., she moved there, visiting daily, taking control of his estate, and staying with him until his release. They returned to Italy in 1958; in 1961 she moved to London, leaving her husband to live out the last decade of his life with Olga Rudge. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1915 - 1915 Original Hardback Wisden.

Hi, This lot is an 1915 Original Hardback Wisden. In Very Good condition The boards are very clean with excellent, extremely bright gilt, there are a few marks to the boards but nothing off putting. A slight darkness to the edge of the boards and the pagebloack and edge of the pastedowns. The hinges are very strong and the yellow pastedowns in top condition and very bright yellow bar a little bit of darkness at the edge. The photoplate is very good and internally a nice clean book. Internally a very nice book. 1915s are not seen too often.
