A prolific writer who often drew directly on his personal experience, Strindberg's career spanned four decades, during which time he wrote over 60 plays and more than 30 works of fiction, autobiography, history, cultural analysis, and politics. A bold experimenter and iconoclast throughout, he explored a wide range of dramatic methods and purposes, from naturalistic tragedy, monodrama, and history plays, to his anticipations of expressionist and surrealist dramatic techniques. From his earliest work, Strindberg developed forms of dramatic action, language, and visual composition so innovative that many were to become technically possible to stage only with the advent of film. He is considered the father of modern Swedish literature and his The Red Room (1879) has frequently been described as the first modern Swedish novel. Complete in ten volumes. Condition: In half-morocco bindings with marbled boards. Externally, smart, with just some sunning to the spines. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, and quite clean, with just a few instances of foxing to the first and last few pages and some light marginal browning. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

KASIDAH of Haji Abdu El-Yezdi. A Lay of the Higher Law. With a Foreword by Roger Ingpen

Portland: Thomas Bird Mosher, 1915. This edition printed on Japanese Vellum is limited to only 20 numbered copies,of which this is number 12 signed by Mosher. With a facsimile of the original design and lettering of the front wrapper to the first edition. Royal quarto, full vellum lettered in gilt on upper and lower covers and spine. xxvii, 72, colophon leaf signed. A nice copy of this rare book, the vellum a bit mellowed. The kasidah (couplets) in this volume of poetry were written by Burton under his nom-de-plume, Haji Abdu Al-Yazdi. Compared by critics to "The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam," Burton's verse was judged as a "an exquisite gem of Oriental poetry." Burton wrote the Kasidah 27 years before he first ventured to print it. Mosher printed only 20 copies on the japon vellum used for this copy. Initials are in red. There is a fine introduction by William Marion Reedy and a number of tributes to Burton in verse including two by Watts-Dunton and Swinburne. Finally, there are a profusion of notes on Haji and the Kasidah itself. Copies are extremely elusive and we have seen none on the open market in recent memory.

        IMPORTANT THREE-PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED

Dorchester, 1915. Hardy, Thomas. IMPORTANT THREE-PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED ("Sincerely Yours, Tomas Hardy"), (Max Gate, Dorchester, May 31: 1915). Single sheet of ordinary watermarked paper. Folded twice, written on 3 sides in black ink. In Very Good condition, traces of having been mounted at some point, sharply inked. To poet, critic, founder of The Savoy, Rhymers Club member, and contributor to The Yellow Book, Arthur Symons (1865-1945). It reads, it part: "My Dear Symons: I have read with much interest the papers you sent & return them herewith lest you should not have kept a fair copy. I don’t call the composition quite a story: it seems rather a study of a certain class of womankind, & mind. As you ask me for advice I daresay you mean advice in a practical sense as to the advisability of printing the MS. without reference to the goodness or otherwise of the work. Also that you wish me to speak quite frankly, whether or no my view accords with your own wishes. Candidly then, I should not, if I were you, publish the study. The present time is particularly unsympathetic with such phases of life & your reputation might not be advanced by printing this. The colossal war in which Europe is engaged must be very suggestive of many things to you & I should not be surprised to hear that the lively imagination which prompted these pages you send has exercised itself in raising some night-mare-ish vision of the terrible events that are happening..." Hardy’s relationship with gifted fellow poet Symons had been an enthusiastic one for over a decade and in Symons Hardy found a kindred spirit with whom he could entrust feelings he otherwise rarely shared. However Symons’ mental health suffered an irreparable blow in 1908 when, in Venice, he suffered a psychotic break which in effect destroyed his creativity forever; he never again published the kind of superior work which won him accolades in his youth. This particular letter refers to Symons’ unpublished novel about a prostitute [THE LIFE OF LUCY NEWCOME]. The subtext of this letter subtly reflects Hardy’s sensitivity toward Symons’ condition; he is aware of Symons’ emotional fragility and his references to the horrific nightmare of World War One on Symons’ "lively imagination" appears (to us, at least) to be Hardy’s way of expressing his deeper understanding for the failure of the novel and a subtle warning that, by publishing this fiction, Symons would further expose himself to hurtful judgment of his deteriorating creative skills. Hardy wrote many exceedingly interesting letters to fellow writers. This is one of the finest we’ve had the good fortune to handle. . Signed. Original Manuscript. Very Good.

      - Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1915. Sm. 4to, xv, 422pp. With 8 color plates, numerous b/w plates, and line drawings in the text. Original dark blue boards with light blue lettering and gilt pictorial design on upper cover, top edge gilt. Slight scuff to lower cover, but a remarkably fine copy as issued. First edition, inscribed by the author on front free endpaper dated March 22, 1916. Kunz was AmericaÕs most renowned mineralogist, with numerous publications to his credit. He was instrumental in establishing the Carat as the unit of measure for gems. ÒKunziteÓ is named after him. His library of several thousand books etc. on gems and minerals etc. went to the United States Geological Survey Library, purportedly for one dollar. In 2012 they discovered a unique album containing 81 photographs of the Russian Crown Jewels which predates the official catalog by the Soviet government by 3 years. Researchers have identified four pieces of jewelry that were documented in 1922 that were not included in the later catalog and that are assumed missing today. Copies were issued in a box that stated: ÒMagic jewels and electric gems; meteorites or celestial stones; stones of healing; fabulous stones; concretions and fossils; snake stones and bezoars; charms of ancient and modern times; facts and fancies about precious stones. Each profusely illustrated in color, doubletone and line. Octavo. Handsome cloth binding, gilt top, in a box.Ó [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Archive of 600+ Black-and-White Erotic and Pornographic Jazz Age, Prohibition, and Depression Era Photographs]

[Various: np, New York, San Francisco, etc.]& : [Various], [ca. 1915-1940]. Very good. Four photo albums. Photo sizes vary, majority snapshot, but many larger. Most loosely corner-mounted, some glued, with a number additionally loosely laid in. Some larger format images hole punched at edge and inserted in two-ring binder. Overall condition of photos, however, still easily very good or better. Albums themselves good only with many pages lose, some chipping, boards of one album detached. An exhaustive archive of illicit photographs from just before to just after the Jazz Age. Encompassing a wide variety of materials - from nude studio portraits and real photo postcards to vernacular snapshots - this collection offers an exceptionally comprehensive overview of Depression-era pornographic photo practices, ones that exhibit the tensions prevalent in the industry during this time of censorship, prosecution, and prohibition: between the artistic, the academic/scientific, and the prurient. The collection includes most prominently more than three-dozen images by Albert Arthur Allen, most 8” x 10”. Allen is increasingly recognized as a key figure of the period (and the subject of the 2001 monograph PREMIER NUDES). Frequently prosecuted during his career, Allen is singled out as one of the first - if not the first – fine art nude photographer to show pubic hair. Many of the Allen photos have been hand-colored by the photographer and are rare thus. Also included are several dozen 8” x 10” images from many other noted erotic studios of the day: Alta (San Francisco), Krueger (Cleveland), Tuscan (Red Bluff, CA) and Rembrandt (Bayonne, NJ). The collection is also noteworthy for the number and quality of vernacular images present. Numerous outdoor scenes (sylvan, oceanic, etc.), ranging from the artful and idyllic to the raunchy and rude. Plus: an abundance of flappers. Flappers with ukeleles and at pianos. Coy flappers and naughty flappers in various flapper fashions. Flappers of all shapes and sizes. Also: an album of slightly later (ca. 1930's) amateur snapshots detailing several women and men in various poses, including in coitus, both in and around period automobiles. Did we mention the flappers? An exceptional collection, one that would be difficult and significantly more expensive to assemble piecemeal. More than 600 photographs in all.

        "Zeppelin"

Paris: [Mabileau & Co.], c. 1915. Hand-coloured pochoir print. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling in the margins and the image. Small loss upper right edge. 13 1/2 x 31 1/4 inches. 17 3/4 x 35 inches. This LZ2 was built sometime between 1910 and 1914. Five airships of this design operated by Delag, safely carried 35,000 passengers between German cities. This was the first passenger air service in the world. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of motorized transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Airplanes. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she also used the name "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring.
