Reveries over Childhood and Youth / Early Memories; Some Chapters of Autobiography

Cuala Press, Churchtown Dundrum 1915 - The book number above relates to three volumes from the Yeats family: "Reveries over Childhood and Youth" from William Butler Yeats; "Plates to accompany Reveries over childhood and youth by W. B. Yeats" and "Early Memories; some chapters of autobiography" by John Butler Yeats [father of W.B.]. All three are from the stable of the legendary Cuala Press a private press, started by Elizabeth Yeats. There is vivid and strong evidence in all three books of how her time with William Morris in London influenced her use of paper, print, font and decoration. "Reveries" is marked (by hand) number 56 of 425 copies published in 1915. "Early Memories" published in 1923 ("the second year of the Irish Free State") is one of five hundred copies printed. It has a preface by W.B. Yeats. Both of these books have some uncut pages. All three of these beautiful small books have board covers and cloth spines. All three have general handling and shelving wear to the covers and the corners. The slim volume of plates contains all the plates to accompany William Butler's "Reveries". The inside front and back covers and frontis and back papers have general marking and age related markings. All three spines are marked and worn. Inside, the pages are thick, thrillingly energetic and beautifully printed. The print is bold and fresh. The plates have foxing to the bottom rims. the black background of the 'memory harbour' plate is torn but the plate itself is not damaged. Some pages have foxing and handling marks, but in major generality the pages are unblemished by age or hand. These books may be owned with complete satisfaction, joy and pleasure. fk [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Photography - 450 Stereoviews of East Africa 1915

East Africa, 1915. German East Africa, 1915. Set of approximately 450 original and unique glass stereoview photographs, one-off images, each measuring approximately 10 x 4,5 cm; neatly organized in the 25 original boxes labeled in manuscript. Together with an original glyphoscope, a device then used for both producing and viewing the photographs. Very Good Condition. Provenance: From the estate of Schutztruppe officer Ludwig Klug (1882-1932), who participated in the East African Campaign as a German colonial guard. Unusually voluminous, and safeguarded with utmost care by the officer of the German colonial guard who witnessed the scenes firsthand 100 years ago, this collection of stereoviews preserves remarkable images of various tribes honouring ancestral tradition in dress, dance, gatherings, and daily tasks. Other highlights include Askari troops in line for war duty, big game hunting and the coveted prizes gained, other wildlife, river navigation, European settlers, antiquity, spectacular landscapes, and so forth. Approximately 450 stereoviews make up this collection, with only a small number of boxes devoted to sojourns within Europe, the majority from the African Theatre of World War I although intently focusing on culture and adventure rather than war. Together with an uncommon yet brilliant device used from 1904 into the 1930s, and quite popular in its day, the glyphoscope, which was designed by Jules Richard. A learned maker of instruments he is best remembered for those relating to stereo photography, and also for his own photographs of nudes in a time where the latter was most scandalous in Great Britain. The glyphoscope was capable of both producing and viewing the photographs, ideal for the explorer, travelling naturalist, and the like. . Very Good.

Tafeln, Leinenband der Zeit; beigelegt ein eigenhändiges Schreiben von Chevalier Jackson.. First Edition!. - Chevalier Jackson (1865-1958) work reduced the risks involved in a tracheotomy. He essentially invented the modern science of endoscopy of the upper airway and esophagus, using hollow tubes with illumination the esophagoscopes and bronchoscopes. Jackson developed methods for removing foreign bodies from the esophagus and the airway with great safety - a huge advance for a condition that previously had often been a death sentence, with a high mortality from the object itself or from complications of chest surgery in the 19th century. - In his Philadelphia bronchoscope clinic he trained numerous students and physicians in his techniques. Jackson also contributed to the development of laryngeal surgery.

Tiny tears to the yapped edges, and a modest crease on the rear wrap, a near fine copy. On page 33 is the 17-year old Earhart's senior picture (with a small ink check beside it), with mention that she would attend Bryn Mawr, and that she came to Hyde Park from St. Paul in 1914 (one of six high schools she attended), and the accompanying caption: "Meek loveliness is 'round thee spread." Earhart is mentioned in the class prophecy (as a waitress!), but she otherwise doesn't seem to have been particularly involved in extracurricular activities, presumably because she moved so much.         THE HOME OF THE BLIZZARD. Being the Story of the Australasian Expedition, 1911-1914

William Heinemann, 1915. Cloth. Very Good. 1st 2 Volume Edition; Vol I, xxx, 349pp, Photogravure frontispiece, 8 colour plate leaves, 108 plate leaves (4 folding), 17 text illustrations. Vol II, xiii, 338pp, Photogravure frontispiece, 10 colour plate leaves, 93 plate leaves (5 folding), 20 text illustrations, 3 folding maps in rear pocket. Original dark blue cloth, title gilt to upper board and spine, pictorial block - "Leaning into the Wind" - in silver to front cover. The book is in the same format as Shackleton?'s Heart of the Antarctic, which is advertised on the first half-title verso. Initially intending to be a member of Scott?'s party, Mawson decided to command his own expedition, the first official Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Mawson charted more than 2000 miles of coastline and nearly lost his life in a wild sledge journey. In the process, he developed a detailed scientific analysis of George V Land and Macquarie Island, and produced this classic account of heroic age exploits, which includes stunning photography from the camera of Frank Hurley. Account of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition 1911-1914 led by Douglas Mawson. Shore paries wintered at Cape Denison and on the Shackleton Ice Shelf. The former base was unfortunately located in an area of constant gale-force winds -- hence the title. In December 1912 a sledge party reached the South Magnetic Pole, located by Eric Webb. Meanwhwile another party, consisting of Mawson, Ninnis and Mertz explored eastwards across George V Land. Only Mawson returned to base, Ninnis having fallen down a crevasse and Mertz having died of starvation and compliications. The expedition would discover 1,320 miles of land, including the Mertz, Denman, and Scott Glaciers, and the Davis Sea, and map 800 miles of coastline between Gaussberg and Cape Adare, all along the Adelie Land coast and beyond. Mawson's tale is one of the great stories of survival of the heroic age of Antarctic exploration. Exploring with Ninnis & Mertz in 1912, Ninnis was lost down a crevasse. With him went the 6 fittest dogs & the most indispensable supplies. Mertz & Mawson improvised, feeding the dogs worn out mitts & raw-hide straps, but eventually the weakest dogs were killed to feed them all, until all the dogs were gone. The two men reserved the dog's livers as the meat easiest to chew, unaware that liver's toxins were slowly poisoning the men as they consumed it. Mertz became delirious and died. Mawson continued, the soles of his feet separating and his toes and fingers festering. Miraculously he found a depot of food, and arrived eventually at the main depot, to see the ship departing on the horizon. He wintered over with the 6 men who had remained to continue the search. On Dec. 24, 1913 their 2 year journey was finally over. Taurus 100; Rosove 217.A1; Spence 774; Conrad p208.         Seven Panoramic Photographs of a Parade in Fargo, North Dakota

Seven panoramic photographs (six unique, one is duplicated). Each is approximately 10.75" x 3.5". Condition is just about fine. Undated and unsigned but circa 1915. One panorama depicts men in military or military style uniforms marching from the Fargo train station; another shows a downtown intersection with several easily identifiable shops and stores -- one displaying a Marine Corps banner; another shows both paraders and spectators in wagons and early automobiles; and yet another shows a large parade ground with a host of spectators. The duplicated image is of a large, probably public building, awash in flags and bunting with a sizable crowd awaiting the parade. Nice and relatively early images in a panoramic format. .

The inscription reads: "To T.J.Lane from C.H.K.M. - With best wishes on his leaving Eton. Eton: Dec. 1919 (?).. Sir (Clarence) Henry Kennett Marten KCVO (28 October 1872 - 11 December 1948) was the Provost of Eton and the private tutor of Queen Elizabeth II. Henry Marten was born with his twin sister Isabel in Kensington, London. He was the younger son of Sir Alfred Marten and his wife Patricia. Marten entered Eton College, and from there matriculated at Balliol College, Oxford in 1891. In 1895, he graduated with a first class degree in modern history, and accepted an offer from Edmond Warre to return to Eton to teach history. He was a founder member of the Historical Association in 1906. In 1912, he published The Groundwork of British History with his co-author, George Townsend Warner, which became "one of the most used school textbooks of the first half of the twentieth century".With E. H. Carter,[a] he wrote a school textbook for younger children, in several volumes, titled simply "Histories". Other collaborative works included The Teaching of History in 1938. In 1925, Marten narrowly missed becoming Master of Magdalene College, in Cambridge, when he was recommended to Lord Braybrooke as a possible candidate, but the College Fellows opposed the appointment, preferring another candidate, A. S. Ramsey. Braybrooke chose to appoint neither, and instead A. B. Ramsay, who was Lower Master at Eton, got the job. Marten was appointed to Ramsay's vacated post at Eton. Further promotions followed, to Vice-Provost in 1929, and Provost in 1945. In 1938, Marten began instructing Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) in constitutional history. He was appointed Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in the 1945 New Year Honours, and received the accolade from King George VI on 4 March 1945, on the steps of Eton College Chapel. He died unmarried in the Provost's Lodge at Eton, where the Marten Library is named after him. The library contains his collection of books, which he bequeathed to Eton on his death. (Wikipedia) ______________________________ The publication includes: Birth of Public Schools / The Foundation of Eton / Growth of Eton / The Buildings of Eton / Eton in Prose / Eton in Verse The mentioned verses are for example by Thomas de Quincey, Charles Dickens, Benjamin Disraeli, Thomas Gray, Alexander William Kinglake, Samuel Pepys, Percy Bysshe Shelley, James Kenneth Stephen, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Horace Walpole, Isaak Walton, etc. etc. Eton College, usually referred to as Eton, is a British independent boarding school for boarding pupils aged between 13 to 18 years. It is a large boys' school, with over 1,300 pupils, and was founded in 1440 by King Henry VI as "The King's College of Our Lady of Eton besides Wyndsor". The School is located in the village of Eton, near Windsor in England, and is one of nine English independent schools, commonly referred to as "public schools", included in the original Public Schools Act 1868. Following the public school tradition, Eton is a full boarding school, which means all pupils live at the school, and is one of four remaining single-sex boys' public schools (the others being Winchester College, Harrow School and Radley College) to continue this practice. Eton has a long list of distinguished former pupils. David Cameron is the nineteenth British Prime Minister to have attended Eton, and has recommended that Eton set up a school in the state sector to help drive up standards. The College has also educated generations of British aristocracy and members of the Royal family, the most recent being Prince William and his brother Prince Harry. Eton has traditionally been referred to as "the chief nurse of England's statesmen", and has been described as the most famous public school in the world. Early in the 20th century, a historian of Eton wrote, "No other school can claim to have sent forth such a cohort of distinguished figures to make their mark on the world." The Good Schools Guide called the school "the number one boys' public school," adding, "The teaching and facilities are second to none." The school is a member of the G20 Schools Group. (Wikipedia)

Nice and relatively early images in a panoramic format. .
