Memoirs of the Lowell Observatory: Memoir on a trans-Neptunian Planet and Memoir on Saturn's Rings [Two Volumes]

Lynn, MA. 1915: Thos. P. Nichols & Son Co. In two Volumes. Lowell was an American astronomer who predicted the existence of a planet beyond the orbit of Neptune. He published a series of "Memoirs of the Lowell Observatory" containing theoretical researches of his personal studies of a "Trans-Neptuneian Planet" and of the structure of "Saturn’s Rings". In volume one he attributed certain irregularities to the action of an unseen planet beyond Neptune and calculated its probable position. In 1905 he organized a systematic search for the planet by the staff of his observatory, and in 1915 he published his Memoir on a Trans-Neptunian Planet. Fourteen years after his death the search culminated in the discovery of Pluto. Volume two contains his observations and calculations of Saturn's rotation and the density of its rings. Volume 1, No. 1: 105pp. with nine plates (two double-page) situated at the rear, bound in original printed wraps with stripes (off-setting from cardboard box but not present) . Volume 1, No. 2: 22pp. 2 plates. Bound in original printed wraps. Both volumes are in absolute fine condition save for the stripes. No names, tears or loss of any kind. Laid into volume one is a card "compliments of the writer". Quite rare to have both copies.. First Edition. Quarto.

[IMPORTANT EARLY 20th-CENTURY PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM TITLED "ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK / COLORADO"]

[Colorado, circa 1915].. Twenty-four sepia-toned silver gelatin photographs. Each photograph hand- bound into the album on a cloth stub, measuring approximately 9.75 x 14 inches, each hand- titled in ink near bottom edge. Inscribed by the photographer opposite the first photograph, "Photographs by Henry Stark, Saint Louis." Folio. Contemporary full leather, front cover gilt, silk endpapers. Some edge wear and scuffing to the covers, spine ends and front joint chipped. Last four photographs loose from mounts. The photographs are mostly in excellent condition, with only slight dust-soiling to the versos of some and minor foxing to two of the loose plates. A unique copy of an amazing assortment of Rocky Mountain photographs. This album features exceptional, and, at times, breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountain National Park landscape, most with people, dwellings, and different modes of transportation (automobiles and horses) incorporated into the compositions. Titles, each handwritten in ink near the bottom edge, include: Twin Sisters Mountain On the High Drive Lunch at Loch Vale Timberline Cabin The Heart of the Rockies - Long's Peak "Going Fishing," Lawn Lake Lawn Lake and Cabin Fall River Road and Lodge Mts. Chapin and Chiquita Balanced Rock on Fern Lake Trail Gem Lake Long's Peak from Gem Lake Trail At Fern Lodge Big Thompson Canyon A Trail Thru the Spruces Bear Lake and Camp On Trail to Long's Peak Outlet of Odessa Lake On Trail to Long's Peak (second plate so titled) Fern Falls On Gem Lake Trail Odessa Lake Colorado Mountain Club Register at Gem Lake The Continental Divide In the winter of 1895, Stark ventured to Texas, traveling throughout and producing what is believed to be the first extensive photographic record of the Lone Star State. The following year, many of Stark's photographs documenting Texas appeared in the TEXARKANA GATEWAY TO TEXAS AND THE SOUTHWEST, which was printed by the Woodward and Tiernan Printing Co., St. Louis, and issued by the Iron Mountain Route, the Texas Pacific Railway, the Cotton Belt Route, and the International-Great Northern Railroad. An album titled VIEWS IN TEXAS was later assembled by Stark, and contained over 250 of his Texas photographs. The Dallas Historical Society houses the only known copy of this album. A publication printed in 1896 by Woodward and Tiernan, which features views on the Mississippi River, between St. Louis and New Orleans was credited to a photographer named Stark, and is likely referencing Henry Stark. He also produced photographs for Woodward and Tiernan's 1898 publication entitled THE HEART OF THE SOUTH: ALONG THE LINE OF THE ATLANTA AND WEST POINT RAILROAD AND WESTERN RAILWAY OF ALABAMA. It is unclear why Stark produced this particular album, or why he was photographing Colorado at this particular time. Perhaps he produced the present work as a personal copy or on behalf of the Federal Government to promote Rocky Mountain National Park, which was officially established on January 26, 1915. Considering the artistic and highly professional quality of the photographs, the album was clearly created to showcase the majestic beauty of the Rockies as well as Stark's remarkable photographic vision.

For Muir, the wilderness was a medicine or spiritual tonic. Much of "Travels in Alaska" is given to glaciers, including their descriptions, their influence on the landscape, their geological record, the discovery of new glaciers, and other characteristics of these moving rivers of ice. When describing glaciers, John Muir offers descriptive powers unequaled among authors on nature. John Muir's tales of adventure and exploration in Alaska elevate this travelogue to the rank of literature This was John Muir's last book; he died while preparing it for publication. .

3 pen and ink drawings of Interiors for House & Garden, 1915

1915. Initailled at bottom center. 1 vols. Fine. "Alfred M. Githens was born in Philadelphia and attended the Episcopal Academy before receiving his B.S. in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania in 1896. He then attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts while working as a draftsman for Cope & Stewardson during the years 1896-1901. In 1900 he received the John Stewardson Scholarship for his design for "The Improvement of the Entrance to Fairmount Park," and in 1901 he journeyed to Europe to attend the American Academy at Rome and stayed on to attend the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. By 1903 he had returned to the United States and begun his non-Philadelphia career. He first worked for Lord & Hewlett, but in 1904 moved to Cass Gilbert, both in New York. In 1904 he and Charles C. Haight launched their own firm in that city and continued working together through 1916. From 1917 to 1932 Githens was a partner in the firm of Tilton & Githens (Edward L. Tilton), again in New York City; and from 1937 through 1942 he and Francis Keally maintained a partnership. Githens became as wellknown for his writings as for his architectural designs, and his success with library buildings was reinforced by his publication in 1941 of The American Public Library, co-authored with J. L. Wheeler. While Githens joined the T-Square Club in 1895, his other professional affiliations were not located in Philadelphia. He was a member of the New York Chapter of the AIA and registered as an architect in that state as well. He joined the national AIA in 1933, became a fellow in 1944, and subsequently achieved emeritus status. He taught architectural courses at Columbia University's University Extension from 1918 to 1921 and again at Princeton University from 1927 to 1928. At the time of his death Githens was residing in Laguna Beach, CA."

Er starb als Witwer und war kinderlos. Edward Harrison liebte einen hellen durchsonnten Kolorismus und einen leicht pastosen, fleckigen Farbauftrag, wie er von den Impressionisten bevorzugt eingesetzt wurde. Here, the poems have been translated by two of the greatest writers on spiritual mysticism, Tagore and Underhill (at a time when spiritualism and alternative philosophies were much in vogue in Britain). This is a neat, tidy book. The book is healthy and fit. Taking its age into account there is very mild wear to the edges and the cover has some mild surface marking. As was usual at the time the papertrims are rough-cut. There is a small previous owner signature (in pencil) on the frontispage. The handmade paper has aged extremely well. The contents are firm, very clear, clean, sure, companionable and utterly intent. fk Quantity Available: 1. Category: Eastern Philosophy; Poetry; Inventory No: amun.

        THE VALLEY OF FEAR

1915. With a Frontispiece by Frank Wiles. London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1915. 6 pp undated ads. Original red cloth. First English Edition of this Sherlock tale sited half in an English manor house and half in the coal mining villages of Pennsylvania. As Doyle later recollected, the story had its origin "through my reading a graphic account of the Molly Maguire outrages in the coalfields of Pennsylvania, when a young detective from Pinkerton's Agency acted exactly as the hero is represented as doing."~The American edition, which consisted of more than four times as many copies, was published about three months earlier. This was Sherlock Holmes's first appearance in ten years, following his RETURN in 1905. This was also the last of the four book-length Sherlock Holmes adventures -- the others having been A STUDY IN SCARLET, THE SIGN OF FOUR and THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES. As veteran Doyle collectors know, the later Sherlockian titles (such as THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, this one, HIS LAST BOW and THE CASE-BOOK OF SHERLOCK HOLMES) are scarcer than the earlier ones such as THE ADVENTURES, THE MEMOIRS, and THE HOUND.~This is a near-fine copy, with scarcely any wear at all. The red cloth has a few instances of faint discoloration, and the thick wove paper does have a bit of the usual foxing, but this book seldom turns up in any better condition; the original endpapers are intact.         Navy Estimates in The Great War, A Speech Delivered by the Right Hon Winston S Churchill, M P in the House of Commons on February 15th, 1915

London: The Liberal Publication Department, 1915. First edition, only printing. Pamphlet. This item is from the personal collection of Churchill's bibliographer, Ronald I. Cohen. Here is the original, first printing pamphlet publication of Churchill's February 15, 1915 speech in the House of Commons - his final time introducing the annual Navy Budget as First Lord of the Admiralty. His first Navy Estimates speech of 1912 occurred on the eve of World War I and laid out detailed policies for countering Germany in the growing naval arms race. That speech was well received and resulted in aggressive efforts under Churchill's Admiralty leadership to put Britain's Navy on a war footing. This 1915 Navy Estimates presentation occurs in the midst of war. Churchill reports: "On the declaration of war we were able to count upon a Fleet of sufficient superiority for all our needs, with a good margin for safety in vital matters, fully mobilised, placed in its war stations, supplied and equipped with every requirement." It would arguably be the war on land more than the war at sea that would prove Churchill's undoing. Later in the year, after being blamed for Gallipoli and the disastrous Dardanelles campaign, Churchill would resign from the Cabinet and rejoin the army to serve on the front in the trenches of France. The pamphlet offered here is 20 pages, bound in wire-stitched paper wraps, and measures 8.5 x 5.5 inches. Of note, this is not a disbound copy, but a full-size original pamphlet. Most surviving original Churchill speech pamphlets of this era were once bound in annual compilations by the Liberal Publication Department, or remain thus, per Cohen (p.195). Were this copy ever bound thus, it would lack the original binding staple, be trimmed to 8 x 5.25 inches, and bear the number "8" hand stamped on the upper right corner, all indicating that it was disbound from the collected "Pamphlets and Leaflets for 1915-1918?". This copy is intact in its original pamphlet form, measuring the full 8.5 x 5.5 inches untrimmed size, still bearing an original binding staple, and with no "8" stamped on the upper front cover. Condition is very good given the age and inherent fragility. The paper covers remain attached, but barely so, with chipping and splits along the hinge. The covers are otherwise notably clean and complete, as are the contents. We note no spotting and no previous ownership marks. Age-toning is moderate and uniform throughout, as should be expected. Quite rare thus, being never bound and trimmed. The pamphlet is protected in a removable, archival quality mylar sleeve. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A45, Woods A24.

He came to London in 1901 from New Zealand, when he was 23 years old. Determined to make his mark on the then-flourishing magazine and book market, he struggled, studied and sold the occasional drawing. However, when the editor of Little Folks magazine gave him a commission to illustrate a story with an animal, he found his feet and suddenly he became quite successful. By 1903 he was illustrating books for the editor of Little Folks, writing and illustrating his own books, and in demand by nearly every publisher in London. He was one of the subjects in Percy V. Bradshaws' The Art of the Illustrator, 20 part series, published in 1918, where six stages of the creation of an illustration were published along with notes and biography. He is also noted for his illustrations of British Golf Courses & golfing caricatures.Ren? Bull (1872-1942) was born in Dublin to a French mother and an English father. He went to Paris to study engineering but veered into an artistic career after meeting and taking drawing lessons from the French satirist and political cartoonist Caran d'Ache (Emmanuel Poiré). Bull returned to Ireland to contribute sketches and political cartoons to various publications. Moving to London in 1892, Bull drew for "Illustrated Brits" and created cartoons 'Pick-Me-Up' from 1893. In 1896 Bull joined Black and White illustrated newspaper as a special artist and photographer. In 1898 he covered the Tirah Campaign in India and went on to Sudan for the campaign culminating in the Battle of Omdurman. He settled in England and drew cartoons for such magazines as 'Bystander', 'Chums', 'London Opinion' 'Lika Joko'. In 'The Sketch" Bull created cartoons of humorous inventions, predating those of Heath Robinson. From 1905 he illustrated books, starting with an edition of Fontaine's 'Fables'. Other major titles he illustrated included The Arabian Nights (1912), Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám (1913), The Russian Ballet (1913), Carmen (1915), Andersen's Fairy Tales. The story of Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit was first published in New York in 1907 by Frederick A. Stokes, and was illustrated by J.M. Conde.
