"The ""Suit of Lights"" consisting of three pieces: talaguilla (pants), chaquetilla (short rigid vest) and waist coat.Patricia McCormick (1929-2013) quit college for bullfighting, persuading Alejandro del Hierro, a retired matador, to be her mentor and later her manager. She made her bullfighting debut on September 9, 1951, in Juárez Mexico. ""The Big Spring Daily Herald"" reported afterward that a bull trampled her twice and tossed her with its horns before she plunged the estoque between its shoulders. The crowd showered her with roses, and the judges awarded her the bull?s ear, signifying a superior performance. After killing the animal, Miss McCormick, streaked in blood, knelt down and stroked its head. ?I loved the brave bull,? she later wrote in ?Lady Bullfighter,? her memoir. In 1952, she was the first American woman invited to join Mexico?s matador union.Patricia McCormick was not allowed to wear the male matador's glittering traje de luces, or suit of lights. After retiring, del Hierro gave her his ""suit of lights,"" the glittering traje de luces here offered."

When describing glaciers, John Muir offers descriptive powers unequaled among authors on nature.         Camera Work: Issue Number 48

New York: Alfred Stieglitz. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE MOST CELEBRATED ISSUES OF CAMERA WORK: Issue number 48, introducing the work of Paul Strand. Complete with 9 original photogravures, including 1 by Frank Eugene, 6 by Paul Strand, 1 by Arthur Allen Lewis, and 1 by Francis Bruguière as well as 6 half-tone reproductions after photographs of '291' by Alfred Stieglitz. With original texts by Marius De Zayas and Marsden Hartley. "When in 1915 Stieglitz saw Strand's radically new approach to photography, which embraced the inherent characteristics of the medium and its materials together with the ideas of the artistic avant-garde, he felt committed, once again, to communicate in Camera Work the importance of photography as a vital art form. Stieglitz had been striving for precisely this synthesis of formal abstraction and poetic expressiveness, a synthesis which embodied an American aesthetic and syntax. In his October 1916 issue of Camera Work, Stieglitz wrote of Strand: 'His work is rooted in the best traditions of photography. His vision is potential. His work is pure. It is direct. It does not rely upon tricks of process. In whatever he does there is applied intelligence. In the history of photography there are but few photographers who, from the point of view of expression, have really done work of any importance. And by importance we mean work that has some relatively lasting quality, that element which gives all art its real significance'" (Kaspar M. Fleischmann in American Photography: Local and Global Contexts). Photogravures entitled (in the order they appear) The Cat by Frank Eugene, New York [Wall Street], Telegraph Poles, New York [Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street], New York [Rooftops], New York [Washington Heights, New York], and New York [City Hall Park] by Paul Strand; Winter by Arthur Allen Lewis; and A Portrait by Francis Bruguière.         Flugsport - Illustrirte technische Zeitschrift und Anzeiger fur das gesamte "Flugwesen" - Offizielles Organ der Flugzeugfabrikanten und Flugtechn. Vereine - VII. Jahrgang 1915

Flugsport, Frankfurt a. M., 1915, Hardcover, Book Condition: Good, Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, 1st EditionFull set of copies of "Flugsport" for 1915 bound in half leather. Founded by Oskar Ursinus in 1908 these magazines cover perhaps one of the most important years in the continued development of flying machines. Ursinus, during this year, designed a bomber that the Germans used from thereon throughout the Great War. Ursinus, besides, was one of the greatest glider-inspirations and aircraft designers and technicians. Still being built with wood and canvas the aircraft shown in these pages seem primitive but they are the grandparents of the modern airplane. German text throughout. A truly fascinating volume for historians, layman and enthusiast. The cover is worn about the edges, corners, spine seams and head and foot. The marbled board cover has scuffing and mild scratching. The cover is sturdy, resolute, firm. It is secure, the spine has character. The gold printing on the spine is bright. The ridges are strong. Marbled front and end pages in neat condition. The papertrims are mildly tanned. Inside, the pages are very clear even taking their age into account. They are clean, tight, eager, spirited, fascinating, full, competent, thrilling, confident. fk

Robert Scott Had Offered Mawson A Coveted Place On The Terra Nova Expedition. The Other Members Of The Expedition Were Largely From Australian And New Zealand Universities. The Ship Used Was The Aurora Originally Built In Dundee And Bought From Newfoundland, She Was Refitted In London Before Sailing To Hobart Where The Team Members Would Board Her. The Plans For The Australasian Antarctic Expedition Were Ambitious And Far Ranging In Terms Of Scientific Data To Be Gathered But Did Not Involve Any Attempt To Reach The South Pole. Oceanic Survey Was Planned And In Particular A Survey Of Macquarie Island Some 850 Miles South East Of Hobart. The Ship Would Then Head For The Antarctic Mainland Where A Hut Would Be Built And Equipped For A Party To Spend A Year, Another Party Would Then Be Dropped Off Along The Coast And Would Then Be Picked Up The Following Year. The Aurora Departed From Hobart On December 2Nd 1911 For Macquarie Island. Characteristically For Expeditions At This Time In Wooden Sailing Ships With Auxiliary Engine Power, The Rough Seas Encountered Caused Anxieties. The First Night The Wind Rose To A Full Gale. Large Quantities Of Deck Cargo Began Moving Around And The Crew Had Their Work Cut Out To Secure The Lashings In The Teeth Of The Storm. A Plug In One Of The Fresh Water Tanks Was Washed Away And Seawater Rushed In Resulting In The Drinking Supply Being Rationed Afterwards. .

Der Groyser Kundes The Big Stick [or The Big Prankster] Volume VII A Jornal far humor, witz un satire [ = A magazine for humor, wit and satire] Fifth year. 52 issues. January 1 to December 24, 1915.

New York 1915 - Volume VII numbers. Der Groyser Kundes The Big Stick or The Big Prankster was a New York City, Yiddish language satirical weekly which ran from 1909 until 1927. It was entitled Der Kibitser for its first year of production. Loose in binding, 2 leaves detached, one has a clean tear. Founded by the humorist Yosef Tunkel (or Der tunkeler, his pen name, meaning 'The dark one'), the paper was taken on by Jacob Marinoff when Tunkel left to work for an established paper in Warsaw. It consciously set itself up in opposition to the serious Yiddish-language press of the time such as the socialist Forverts. Though, naturally, more traditional religious Judaism did not escape its satire: The 1915 "Christmas" edition included a parodic conversation between Jesus and the prophet Elijah. Despite its irreverent attitude to everything, it also published poetry by Di Yunge ("The Young Ones") poets such as Moyshe-Leyb Halpern and Zuni Maud. At its height it had a circulation of 35,000 but folded in 1927 due to flagging sales. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Sample book of textiles titled Tozakire Honcho [album of textiles we have handled - more or less] and dated March Taisho 4 [1915].

      - n.p. 1915 360x225mm card cover titled in ink; some 311 samples on 116 leaves followed by a large number of blanks. A working Kyoto draper or textile merchant's sample album of large swatches of luxurious fabrics which I'm told include Kinran (gold brocade), Kando (woven stripes or checks) and Donsu (damask silk). These are presumably Nishijin textiles. There isn't an owner's name though there is a small red stamp inside the covers which looks like an 'm' inside an oval and part of some inscription. It's possible this came from the venerable Kyoto textile house of Daimaru - forerunner of the current department store empire - a number of sample and pattern albums from Daimaru emerged in Kyoto in recent years, but I don't know and I'm not sure it matters. This is serious fabric. I find it interesting that while there is no shortage of tasteful bling - silver and gold - the bright, lurid, colours that came into fashion at the end of Meiji and rampaged through Taisho are significantly absent. These are for the most part pre-aniline colours. The designs, to me, range from insipid to spectacular but even my dull and ignorant eyes can see that no workman's wife wore this stuff round the house.

Memoirs of the Lowell Observatory: Memoir on a trans-Neptunian Planet and Memoir on Saturn's Rings [Two Volumes]

Lynn, MA. 1915: Thos. P. Nichols & Son Co. In two Volumes. Lowell was an American astronomer who predicted the existence of a planet beyond the orbit of Neptune. He published a series of "Memoirs of the Lowell Observatory" containing theoretical researches of his personal studies of a "Trans-Neptuneian Planet" and of the structure of "Saturn?'s Rings". In volume one he attributed certain irregularities to the action of an unseen planet beyond Neptune and calculated its probable position. In 1905 he organized a systematic search for the planet by the staff of his observatory, and in 1915 he published his Memoir on a Trans-Neptunian Planet. Fourteen years after his death the search culminated in the discovery of Pluto. Volume two contains his observations and calculations of Saturn's rotation and the density of its rings. Volume 1, No. 1: 105pp. with nine plates (two double-page) situated at the rear, bound in original printed wraps with stripes (off-setting from cardboard box but not present) . Volume 1, No. 2: 22pp. 2 plates. Bound in original printed wraps. Both volumes are in absolute fine condition save for the stripes. No names, tears or loss of any kind. Laid into volume one is a card "compliments of the writer". Quite rare to have both copies.. First Edition. Quarto.

[Colorado, circa 1915].. Twenty-four sepia-toned silver gelatin photographs. Each photograph hand- bound into the album on a cloth stub, measuring approximately 9.75 x 14 inches, each hand- titled in ink near bottom edge. Inscribed by the photographer opposite the first photograph, "Photographs by Henry Stark, Saint Louis." Folio. Contemporary full leather, front cover gilt, silk endpapers. Some edge wear and scuffing to the covers, spine ends and front joint chipped. Last four photographs loose from mounts. The photographs are mostly in excellent condition, with only slight dust-soiling to the versos of some and minor foxing to two of the loose plates. A unique copy of an amazing assortment of Rocky Mountain photographs. This album features exceptional, and, at times, breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountain National Park landscape, most with people, dwellings, and different modes of transportation (automobiles and horses) incorporated into the compositions. Titles, each handwritten in ink near the bottom edge, include: Twin Sisters Mountain On the High Drive Lunch at Loch Vale Timberline Cabin The Heart of the Rockies - Long's Peak "Going Fishing," Lawn Lake Lawn Lake and Cabin Fall River Road and Lodge Mts. Chapin and Chiquita Balanced Rock on Fern Lake Trail Gem Lake Long's Peak from Gem Lake Trail At Fern Lodge Big Thompson Canyon A Trail Thru the Spruces Bear Lake and Camp On Trail to Long's Peak Outlet of Odessa Lake On Trail to Long's Peak (second plate so titled) Fern Falls On Gem Lake Trail Odessa Lake Colorado Mountain Club Register at Gem Lake The Continental Divide In the winter of 1895, Stark ventured to Texas, traveling throughout and producing what is believed to be the first extensive photographic record of the Lone Star State. The following year, many of Stark's photographs documenting Texas appeared in the TEXARKANA GATEWAY TO TEXAS AND THE SOUTHWEST, which was printed by the Woodward and Tiernan Printing Co., St. Louis, and issued by the Iron Mountain Route, the Texas Pacific Railway, the Cotton Belt Route, and the International-Great Northern Railroad. An album titled VIEWS IN TEXAS was later assembled by Stark, and contained over 250 of his Texas photographs. The Dallas Historical Society houses the only known copy of this album. A publication printed in 1896 by Woodward and Tiernan, which features views on the Mississippi River, between St. Louis and New Orleans was credited to a photographer named Stark, and is likely referencing Henry Stark. He also produced photographs for Woodward and Tiernan's 1898 publication entitled THE HEART OF THE SOUTH: ALONG THE LINE OF THE ATLANTA AND WEST POINT RAILROAD AND WESTERN RAILWAY OF ALABAMA. It is unclear why Stark produced this particular album, or why he was photographing Colorado at this particular time. Perhaps he produced the present work as a personal copy or on behalf of the Federal Government to promote Rocky Mountain National Park, which was officially established on January 26, 1915. Considering the artistic and highly professional quality of the photographs, the album was clearly created to showcase the majestic beauty of the Rockies as well as Stark's remarkable photographic vision.
