        LITTLE MOTHER GOOSE

POGANY, WILLY. (POGANY,WILLY)illus. LITTLE MOTHER GOOSE. NY: McBride Nast 1915. 4to (7 1/4 x 10"), boards, pictorial paste-on, Fine in the rare pictorial dust wrapper (dw chipped, missing a large piece off front panel). The first title in a new series that was intended by the publisher to conform to the high standards of books by Crane and Caldecott. Illus. with 16 color plates by Pogany (8 double-page) and in brown line on every page of text all done in a style different from any of his other books (except for the companion titles in this series). Not related at all to his later Art Deco Mother Goose, this has charming, realistic illustrations with each page of illustration individually hinged into the binding. The dustwrapper illustration is not duplicated in the text. A very scarce Pogany title, incredibly rare in the dw.

        THE KINGDOM OF THE PEARL

New York: Brentano's, 1915. First American Trade Edition. No. 12 OF 675 COPIES printed for sale in the United States (with an additional 100 copies signed and in quarter vellum; a total of 775 American copies) n. Hardcover. 297 x 236 mm (11 3/4 x 9 1/2"). 6 p.l., 150, [2] pp. First American Trade Edition. No. 12 OF 675 COPIES printed for sale in the United States (with an additional 100 copies signed and in quarter vellum; a total of 775 American copies). Publisher's ivory-colored cloth over gray patterned boards, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, and in the rare original dust jacket. Housed in a sturdy (slightly soiled) slipcase. CONTAINING 20 COLOR PLATES BY DULAC, with original descriptive tissue guards. Hughey 54e. Tissue guards uniformly toned as usual, jacket with extensive neat repairs to underside, small losses along top edge, sunning to spine, and other minor defects, but the volume itself in very fine condition. This is a desirable copy--in the rarely seen dust jacket--of a survey of pearls in history, culture, and legend, offered in an edition the contemporary literary critic of the "London Times" described as "fantastically Persian" and showing Dulac "at his best." After originally publishing the work under the title "Au Royaume de la Perle" in 1919, the author commissioned Dulac to produce watercolors appropriate to the text. He then arranged for Parisian publisher H. Piazza to issue a new edition with the Dulac illustrations and, later, for an English translation to be published in London. The print run for the latter edition was 1,500 copies, but when the book was commercially unsuccessful, the remaining sheets were sold to Brentano's in New York for the present American edition. Hughey says that the illustrations here "display a ripening of a Dulac style first seen in 'Sindbad the Sailor,' employed in some of his 'Fairy Book' pictures and developed fully in 'The Tanglewood Tales.' It is a Persian miniature style, but made quite his own. His plates . . . do much to bring a fanciful touch to the otherwise stark exposition of a treatise on pearls." This work is a curious amalgam of illustrative achievement and commercial strategem: at the time of the book's publication, Léonard Rosenthal was the largest dealer of natural pearls in the world and was known as "The Pearl King."

        1914 and Other Poems

London: Sidgwick & Jackson, 1915 First edition, first printing. One of 1,000 copies. Publisher's navy cloth, with light tan paper labels lettered in black and ruled in red to the front board and spine, printed on laid paper; in the original light beige dust jacket, lettered in navy. Near fine, with some minor wear to the spine ends, light spotting and faint offsetting to the endpapers, otherwise fresh interior; unclipped dust jacket, with some wear and chipping to the extremities, light toning to the spine, loss to the spine ends, some light soiling to the panels. Overall, a presentable copy in the scarce dust jacket. Published shortly after his death in 1915, 1914 and Other Poems contains the poetry of Rupert Brooke, English poet and member of the literary Bloomsbury Group, from 1905-1914. Specifically it includes Brooke's five war sonnets that are collectively known as "1914," two verses he wrote prior to the war, and the many poems he wrote while in the South Seas. In these verses, Brooke eloquently captures the patriotic and romantic mood that he shared with his countrymen, including servicemen and civilians alike, at the beginning of the war. Unfortunately, Brooke tragically died at the young age of 27 in 1915, just as his poetry was reaching national acclaim, and after which time he became a symbol for the loss of youth and innocence that would plague the "Lost Generation" in the years after WWI. Indeed, Brooke's poetry influenced the writing of F. Scott Fitzgerald, even inspiring the title of his first book, This Side of Paradise (taken from the poem "Tiare Tahiti": "Well this side of Paradise!… There's little comfort in the wise."). 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

[11] Lieder. Musical manuscripts, most probably autograph, ca. 1930-40

Folio (ca. 338 x 270 mm.). Dark pink wrappers with titling in pencil. Unbound. Notated in black ink on three different pre-printed 12-stave papers, mostly "Ashelm 1068 49" specifically designed for music for a voice/melody instrument with piano (groups of three staves, with the lower two closer to each other and braced); no. 6 notated on unidentified paper with equal spacing between staves; no. 9 notated on "[three anchors] 14" specifically designed for music for a voice/melody instrument with piano (groups of three staves, with the lower two closer to each other and braced). Music unsigned and undated. "Grete Cohn" to upper wrapper only. With occasional corrections and markings in both pencil and ink. The first three and the last of the songs are not numbered and their intended order is unclear: Zum neuen Jahr (Eduard Mörike); Kleine leichte weiße Wolke (Hermann Claudius); Früh, wann die Hähne krähn (Eduard Mörike); 4. Kleines Lied (Hermann Claudius); 5. Dein Gedenken (Will Vesper); 6. Wenn schlanke Lilien wandelten (Gottfried Keller); 7. Nachtlied (Friedrich Hebbel); 9. Sterne mit den goldnen Füßchen (Heinrich Heine); Herbsttag (Rainer Maria Rilke); 10. Beim Mondenscheine im Paradeis (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe). [11.] Ernste Stunde (Rainer Maria Rilke). Two songs (Dein Gedenken and Ernste Stunde) have the text written not only as underlay but also on the page preceding the music; in addition, Dein Gedenken has a title page. With: An untitled piano piece in E major, 32 measures. Notated in pencil on 12-stave pre-printed music paper "J.E. No. 2." Last two staves of recto and all of verso blank. The non-standard key signature in the right hand—the sharps for F and G are at the lower octave—and stylistic features suggest that this composition is a very early one. Wrappers worn and partially detached. Slightly worn, frayed and creased. . Unrecorded compositions by an unrecorded composer. It seems possible, however, that "Grete Cohn" is identical with Margarete Cohn (born 1915 in Berlin, died 2014 in Tucson, Arizona), who lived in Great Britain from 1939 to 1946 and in the United States thereafter. Margarete Cohn studied composition at the Staatliche Musikhochschule in Berlin and, after her dismissal in 1933, privately with Paul Hindemith. Some works of hers were performed at the Jüdischer Kulturbund in Berlin. She is listed in the Lexikon der Juden in der Musik. After her arrival in the United States she changed her name to Margaret H. Collin and no longer pursued a musical career. No extant works of hers are known. See the online encyclopedia LexM on the website of Hamburg University. In view of the fact that the composer was Jewish, it seems ironic that two of the poets she set to music—Will Vesper and Hermann Claudius—were ardent Nazis.

        1915. Carte d'Europe.

1915 - Paris, 1915. Ink and watercolour on cartridge paper. 430 x 560mm. A professional-quality satirical map depicting the countries of Europe during the second year of the First World War. At the centre is a figure representing Germany, wearing a pickelhaube (spiked helmet) and a Kaiser-Bill moustache, sword in one hand and poison-gas canister in the other. Underneath is a decrepid old man on crutches waving a wooden sword, a sad indictment of the fomer glories of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Germany's third ally, the Ottoman Empire, is shown with legs amputated above the knee, with only stilts in their place. Bulgaria sharpens his sword. Surrounding Germany are its opponents: both England and Russia are turning their big guns on Germany, while French, Serbian and Italian soldiers advance with bayonets fixed. Cartographical accuracy is ignored in this satire, with the countries only rough shapes. However it should be noted that Scotland is an island, Serbia is east of Austria and there is no Bosphorus separating Europe and Asia. We assumed that this caricature was drawn for publication: however we have been unable to trace any printed version. The artist was serious when he wrote 'Reproduction interdite' in the bottom corner.

Palestine Exploration Fund Annual, 1914–1915. The Wilderness of Zin

London: by order of the Committee,, 1915. (Archaeological Report.) With a Chapter on the Greek Inscriptions by M. N. Tod. Quarto. Original quarter blue cloth, grey boards, titles to spine gilt and to front board in black. 37 plates to rear with tissue-guards laid in, several plans and illustrations to the text of which 7 full-page and one folding. Boards very faintly sunned towards edges and sometime bumped leading to very faint crease-mark towards top edge of each, old repair to bottom corner of rear board, internally bright and fresh. An excellent copy. First edition, sole printing, in the second issue binding without the full stop after the date on the spine. During January and February of 1914 Lawrence and Leonard Woolley (the archaeologist who would later excavate Ur), together with a British Army surveying detachment, mapped the Negev region of the Sinai Peninsula. The Negev was ruled by the Ottoman Empire, and the survey was a military venture in the guise of an archaeological expedition, preparation for the war the British believed was imminent. Publication in the respected academic journal of the Palestine Exploration Fund was a whitewash to disguise the military nature of the undertaking. The Wilderness of Zin was Lawrence's first work to appear in book form.

THE LOG OF THE SNARK. (Inscribed and signed by author)

NY: Macmillan, 1915. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Slight rubbing to edges of covers, top edge a bit dusty, 2-inch split at bottom of front inner hinge neatly mended, overall very good. Original blue cloth with title and decoration in gilt, small octavo (5.5 x 7.5 inches), 487 pp., [5] pages publisher advertisements at rear; 20 b/w photo plates. Jack London's wife, Charmian's own account, from her on-board log, of the ill-fated Snark trip (Jack's book was titled "Cruise of the Snark"). INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY AUTHOR: "Dear Jessie - Well, here's the old 'Log' between covers at last! Affectionately yours, Charmian. Glen Ellen, November 23, 1915." Mounted to the front fixed endpaper is a vintage albumin silverprint photograph of Jack and Charmian London next to the Snark's beached dinghy. In the picture, Charmian's arm is draped around a small dog and she has written in ink on the endpaper next to the dog, with lines onto the picture to indicate the animal, the single word "Peggy." This same Peggy was the London's beloved pet on board the Snark during the latter part of the abortive voyage. Peggy's real story is told in the introduction to Jack London's novel "Jerry of the Islands," wherein is confessed that the London's stole the "adorable Irish terrier puppy" from the skipper of the teak-built ketch , the Minota, in the Solomon Islands. London goes on to say that Peggy was the model and inspiration for Jerry: "Had it not been for Peggy, this book would never have been written . . . Dear royal, glorious little dog . . ."

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Werwick (Belgien), 22. II. 1915.. 1 S. 8vo. Mit eh. Adresse (Faltbrief)..

Bound from the parts extracted form the 1915 issues of Lippincott's Magazine predating the first US edition in book form, the first appearance of one of Mr.Rohmer's more melodramatic stories, which for the man who created Fu-Manchu, master of the Si-Fan, is saying something. As far as he was concerned if it didn't have an opium den in there somewhere it just wasn't a story. Bleiler; Checklist of Fantastic Literature [1972]

        The "Genius"

New York: The John Lane Company, 1915 First edition, first printing. Inscribed by Dreiser on the title page: "For - / Geo. T. Keating / from / Theodore Dreiser / N.Y. 1919". Publisher's red cloth, lettered in gilt. Near fine or better, with a hint of light soiling to the boards, bookseller's plate to the rear pastedown, former owner's bookplate laid in, bright and clean pages. Overall, a bright and fresh copy. Housed in a custom green quarter morocco slipcase. Dreiser inscribed this copy of The "Genius" to noted bibliophile George Thomas Keating, manager of the New York clay and ceramics dealer Moore & Munger. The "Genius," the author's fifth novel, tells the story of the fictional Eugene Witla, a painter whose strong sexual desires prevent him from achieving happiness in spite of his artistic success. The text is divided into three sections that reflect the stages of Witla's life: "Youth," "Struggle," and "Revolt." A semi-autobiographical text, The "Genius" was one of Dreiser's favorite novels; when critics decried the text and libraries refused to shelve it because of its scandalous subject matter, Dreiser defended his novel publicly and in his introductions to later editions.. Inscribed by Author. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.
