Palestine Exploration Fund Annual, 1914–1915. The Wilderness of Zin

London: by order of the Committee,, 1915. (Archaeological Report.) With a Chapter on the Greek Inscriptions by M. N. Tod. Quarto. Original quarter blue cloth, grey boards, titles to spine gilt and to front board in black. 37 plates to rear with tissue-guards laid in, several plans and illustrations to the text of which 7 full-page and one folding. Boards very faintly sunned towards edges and sometime bumped leading to very faint crease-mark towards top edge of each, old repair to bottom corner of rear board, internally bright and fresh. An excellent copy. First edition, sole printing, in the second issue binding without the full stop after the date on the spine. During January and February of 1914 Lawrence and Leonard Woolley (the archaeologist who would later excavate Ur), together with a British Army surveying detachment, mapped the Negev region of the Sinai Peninsula. The Negev was ruled by the Ottoman Empire, and the survey was a military venture in the guise of an archaeological expedition, preparation for the war the British believed was imminent. Publication in the respected academic journal of the Palestine Exploration Fund was a whitewash to disguise the military nature of the undertaking. The Wilderness of Zin was Lawrence's first work to appear in book form.

[11] Lieder. Musical manuscripts, most probably autograph, ca. 1930-40

Folio (ca. 338 x 270 mm.). Dark pink wrappers with titling in pencil. Unbound. Notated in black ink on three different pre-printed 12-stave papers, mostly "Ashelm 1068 49" specifically designed for music for a voice/melody instrument with piano (groups of three staves, with the lower two closer to each other and braced); no. 6 notated on unidentified paper with equal spacing between staves; no. 9 notated on "[three anchors] 14" specifically designed for music for a voice/melody instrument with piano (groups of three staves, with the lower two closer to each other and braced). Music unsigned and undated. "Grete Cohn" to upper wrapper only. With occasional corrections and markings in both pencil and ink. The first three and the last of the songs are not numbered and their intended order is unclear: Zum neuen Jahr (Eduard Mörike); Kleine leichte weiße Wolke (Hermann Claudius); Früh, wann die Hähne krähn (Eduard Mörike); 4. Kleines Lied (Hermann Claudius); 5. Dein Gedenken (Will Vesper); 6. Wenn schlanke Lilien wandelten (Gottfried Keller); 7. Nachtlied (Friedrich Hebbel); 9. Sterne mit den goldnen Füßchen (Heinrich Heine); Herbsttag (Rainer Maria Rilke); 10. Beim Mondenscheine im Paradeis (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe). [11.] Ernste Stunde (Rainer Maria Rilke). Two songs (Dein Gedenken and Ernste Stunde) have the text written not only as underlay but also on the page preceding the music; in addition, Dein Gedenken has a title page. With: An untitled piano piece in E major, 32 measures. Notated in pencil on 12-stave pre-printed music paper "J.E. No. 2." Last two staves of recto and all of verso blank. The non-standard key signature in the right hand—the sharps for F and G are at the lower octave—and stylistic features suggest that this composition is a very early one. Wrappers worn and partially detached. Slightly worn, frayed and creased. . Unrecorded compositions by an unrecorded composer. It seems possible, however, that "Grete Cohn" is identical with Margarete Cohn (born 1915 in Berlin, died 2014 in Tucson, Arizona), who lived in Great Britain from 1939 to 1946 and in the United States thereafter. Margarete Cohn studied composition at the Staatliche Musikhochschule in Berlin and, after her dismissal in 1933, privately with Paul Hindemith. Some works of hers were performed at the Jüdischer Kulturbund in Berlin. She is listed in the Lexikon der Juden in der Musik. After her arrival in the United States she changed her name to Margaret H. Collin and no longer pursued a musical career. No extant works of hers are known. See the online encyclopedia LexM on the website of Hamburg University. In view of the fact that the composer was Jewish, it seems ironic that two of the poets she set to music—Will Vesper and Hermann Claudius—were ardent Nazis.

THE LOG OF THE SNARK. (Inscribed and signed by author)

NY: Macmillan, 1915. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Slight rubbing to edges of covers, top edge a bit dusty, 2-inch split at bottom of front inner hinge neatly mended, overall very good. Original blue cloth with title and decoration in gilt, small octavo (5.5 x 7.5 inches), 487 pp., [5] pages publisher advertisements at rear; 20 b/w photo plates. Jack London's wife, Charmian's own account, from her on-board log, of the ill-fated Snark trip (Jack's book was titled "Cruise of the Snark"). INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY AUTHOR: "Dear Jessie - Well, here's the old 'Log' between covers at last! Affectionately yours, Charmian. Glen Ellen, November 23, 1915." Mounted to the front fixed endpaper is a vintage albumin silverprint photograph of Jack and Charmian London next to the Snark's beached dinghy. In the picture, Charmian's arm is draped around a small dog and she has written in ink on the endpaper next to the dog, with lines onto the picture to indicate the animal, the single word "Peggy." This same Peggy was the London's beloved pet on board the Snark during the latter part of the abortive voyage. Peggy's real story is told in the introduction to Jack London's novel "Jerry of the Islands," wherein is confessed that the London's stole the "adorable Irish terrier puppy" from the skipper of the teak-built ketch , the Minota, in the Solomon Islands. London goes on to say that Peggy was the model and inspiration for Jerry: "Had it not been for Peggy, this book would never have been written . . . Dear royal, glorious little dog . . ."

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Werwick (Belgien), 22. II. 1915.. 1 S. 8vo. Mit eh. Adresse (Faltbrief)..

        The "Genius"

New York: The John Lane Company, 1915 First edition, first printing. Inscribed by Dreiser on the title page: "For - / Geo. T. Keating / from / Theodore Dreiser / N.Y. 1919". Publisher's red cloth, lettered in gilt. Near fine or better, with a hint of light soiling to the boards, bookseller's plate to the rear pastedown, former owner's bookplate laid in, bright and clean pages. Overall, a bright and fresh copy. Housed in a custom green quarter morocco slipcase. Dreiser inscribed this copy of The "Genius" to noted bibliophile George Thomas Keating, manager of the New York clay and ceramics dealer Moore & Munger. The "Genius," the author's fifth novel, tells the story of the fictional Eugene Witla, a painter whose strong sexual desires prevent him from achieving happiness in spite of his artistic success. The text is divided into three sections that reflect the stages of Witla's life: "Youth," "Struggle," and "Revolt." A semi-autobiographical text, The "Genius" was one of Dreiser's favorite novels; when critics decried the text and libraries refused to shelve it because of its scandalous subject matter, Dreiser defended his novel publicly and in his introductions to later editions.. Inscribed by Author. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

The glittering traje de luces - suit of lights - worn by the great Mexican matador Alejandro del Hierro - presented by him to Patricia McCormick, the first North American female bullfighter

Mexico, 1915-1917. "The ""Suit of Lights"" consisting of three pieces: talaguilla (pants), chaquetilla (short rigid vest) and waist coat.Patricia McCormick (1929-2013) quit college for bullfighting, persuading Alejandro del Hierro, a retired matador, to be her mentor and later her manager. She made her bullfighting debut on September 9, 1951, in Juárez Mexico. ""The Big Spring Daily Herald"" reported afterward that a bull trampled her twice and tossed her with its horns before she plunged the estoque between its shoulders. The crowd showered her with roses, and the judges awarded her the bull?s ear, signifying a superior performance. After killing the animal, Miss McCormick, streaked in blood, knelt down and stroked its head. ?I loved the brave bull,? she later wrote in ?Lady Bullfighter,? her memoir. In 1952, she was the first American woman invited to join Mexico?s matador union.Patricia McCormick was not allowed to wear the male matador's glittering traje de luces, or suit of lights. After retiring, del Hierro gave her his ""suit of lights,"" the glittering traje de luces here offered."

For Muir, the wilderness was a medicine or spiritual tonic. Much of "Travels in Alaska" is given to glaciers, including their descriptions, their influence on the landscape, their geological record, the discovery of new glaciers, and other characteristics of these moving rivers of ice. When describing glaciers, John Muir offers descriptive powers unequaled among authors on nature. John Muir's tales of adventure and exploration in Alaska elevate this travelogue to the rank of literature This was John Muir's last book; he died while preparing it for publication. .

        Camera Work: Issue Number 48

New York: Alfred Stieglitz. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE MOST CELEBRATED ISSUES OF CAMERA WORK: Issue number 48, introducing the work of Paul Strand. Complete with 9 original photogravures, including 1 by Frank Eugene, 6 by Paul Strand, 1 by Arthur Allen Lewis, and 1 by Francis Bruguière as well as 6 half-tone reproductions after photographs of '291' by Alfred Stieglitz. With original texts by Marius De Zayas and Marsden Hartley. "When in 1915 Stieglitz saw Strand's radically new approach to photography, which embraced the inherent characteristics of the medium and its materials together with the ideas of the artistic avant-garde, he felt committed, once again, to communicate in Camera Work the importance of photography as a vital art form. Stieglitz had been striving for precisely this synthesis of formal abstraction and poetic expressiveness, a synthesis which embodied an American aesthetic and syntax. In his October 1916 issue of Camera Work, Stieglitz wrote of Strand: 'His work is rooted in the best traditions of photography. His vision is potential. His work is pure. It is direct. It does not rely upon tricks of process. In whatever he does there is applied intelligence. In the history of photography there are but few photographers who, from the point of view of expression, have really done work of any importance. And by importance we mean work that has some relatively lasting quality, that element which gives all art its real significance'" (Kaspar M. Fleischmann in American Photography: Local and Global Contexts). Photogravures entitled (in the order they appear) The Cat by Frank Eugene, New York [Wall Street], Telegraph Poles, New York [Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street], New York [Rooftops], New York [Washington Heights, New York], and New York [City Hall Park] by Paul Strand; Winter by Arthur Allen Lewis; and A Portrait by Francis Bruguière.         Flugsport - Illustrirte technische Zeitschrift und Anzeiger fur das gesamte "Flugwesen" - Offizielles Organ der Flugzeugfabrikanten und Flugtechn. Vereine - VII. Jahrgang 1915

Flugsport, Frankfurt a. M., 1915, Hardcover, Book Condition: Good, Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, 1st EditionFull set of copies of "Flugsport" for 1915 bound in half leather. Founded by Oskar Ursinus in 1908 these magazines cover perhaps one of the most important years in the continued development of flying machines. Ursinus, during this year, designed a bomber that the Germans used from thereon throughout the Great War. Ursinus, besides, was one of the greatest glider-inspirations and aircraft designers and technicians. Still being built with wood and canvas the aircraft shown in these pages seem primitive but they are the grandparents of the modern airplane. German text throughout. A truly fascinating volume for historians, layman and enthusiast. The cover is worn about the edges, corners, spine seams and head and foot. The marbled board cover has scuffing and mild scratching. The cover is sturdy, resolute, firm. It is secure, the spine has character. The gold printing on the spine is bright. The ridges are strong. Marbled front and end pages in neat condition. The papertrims are mildly tanned. Inside, the pages are very clear even taking their age into account. They are clean, tight, eager, spirited, fascinating, full, competent, thrilling, confident. fk

Robert Scott Had Offered Mawson A Coveted Place On The Terra Nova Expedition. The Ship Used Was The Aurora Originally Built In Dundee And Bought From Newfoundland, She Was Refitted In London Before Sailing To Hobart Where The Team Members Would Board Her. The Plans For The Australasian Antarctic Expedition Were Ambitious And Far Ranging In Terms Of Scientific Data To Be Gathered But Did Not Involve Any Attempt To Reach The South Pole. Oceanic Survey Was Planned And In Particular A Survey Of Macquarie Island Some 850 Miles South East Of Hobart. The Ship Would Then Head For The Antarctic Mainland Where A Hut Would Be Built And Equipped For A Party To Spend A Year, Another Party Would Then Be Dropped Off Along The Coast And Would Then Be Picked Up The Following Year. The Aurora Departed From Hobart On December 2Nd 1911 For Macquarie Island. Characteristically For Expeditions At This Time In Wooden Sailing Ships With Auxiliary Engine Power, The Rough Seas Encountered Caused Anxieties. The First Night The Wind Rose To A Full Gale. Large Quantities Of Deck Cargo Began Moving Around And The Crew Had Their Work Cut Out To Secure The Lashings In The Teeth Of The Storm. A Plug In One Of The Fresh Water Tanks Was Washed Away And Seawater Rushed In Resulting In The Drinking Supply Being Rationed Afterwards. .

Pearson 1915 - Smithy the Hun by Edgar Wallace. Rare 1st Edition. To quote Kiddle's Wallace Bibliography. "The rarest title is, arguably, Smith the Hun. He scores it 400 which is the highest rarity and 200 scarcer than Again the Ringer. The book is in Good only condition as you would expect for a paperback from 1915. Spine coverage is delicate with top letters missing so spine has "ithy and the Hun Edgar Wallace 1/-". Would benefit from some professional restoration. Some surface damage where someone has put there mug of coffee on it! Musty smell. Please ask for photographs. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
