BIOLOGIA CENTRALI-AMERICANA; OR, CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE FAUNA AND FLORA OF MEXICO AND CENTRAL AMERICA

London: R.H. Porter and Dulau and Co., 1915. Quarto and oblong folio. Uniform contemporary gold-tooled red morocco, t.e.g. Some spines evenly faded. Oblong volumes in similar contemporary red half morocco, t.e.g.; original wrappers and Botany indices bound in three separate volumes in contemporary red half cloth. Several plates spotted on margins, a few plates in ARCHAEOLOGY slightly browned. A superb, remarkable set. Provenance: Frederick DuCane Godman (armorial bookplates). The editor's copy of the most comprehensive study of Central American wildlife, in fine condition, and the most complete set to have appeared on the market in the past thirty-five years. The BIOLOGIA is one of the towering achievements of natural history research in the Americas, and remains fundamental to the study of Neotropical plants and animals to this day. Almost 19,000 separate subjects are depicted in the plates and over 50,000 species described, of which almost 20,000 were first noted here. In addition, the extraordinary segment on archeology by Alfred Maudslay remains vital to Mayan studies to this day. Because of the massive nature of the work and its extended period of publication, and because subscribers could purchase sections of the work without subscribing to the whole, most holdings are fragmentary. Since this is Godman's own copy, in superb condition, it is certainly the finest in existence. Frederick DuCane Godman, who conceived, authored, and underwrote the BIOLOGIA, was born into a wealthy English family in 1834 (his father was a partner in the British brewer, Whitbread). After study at Eton and Cambridge, where he met his later co-author, Osbert Salvin, he embarked on a career of studies in ornithology and entomology. In 1861, Godman and Salvin visited Central America together, the first of a number of trips that led to their conception of the BIOLOGIA project. Work on it began in 1876 and the first volumes were published in 1879. Publication was spread over the next thirty-six years, with six or seven parts coming out annually. Most of the research for the project was done in the 1870s and 1880s, after which both men were hampered by ill health. Salvin died in 1898, and publication only terminated with World War I. Godman died in 1919. The entire BIOLOGIA project was conceived and executed at the highest level of scholarship and production, with almost 900 colored plates. It remains the single greatest published resource for New World natural history. It is still a vital reference tool, ever more so today, as issues of biodiversity and extinction move to the forefront of scientific inquiry. It is also a work of great beauty, produced on a level of lavishness that would be impossible today. Although it was not part of the original conception of the work, Godman made the fortunate decision to include a section of Central American archeology. This section was edited by Alfred Maudslay, another Cambridge polymath who became intrigued by the Mayan ruins in Guatemala in 1880. Maudslay spent the next two decades exploring the sites of Tikal, Copan, Quirigua, and Yaxchilan, as well as Chichen Itza. He made careful measurements and took hundreds of photographs, many of them reproduced in colotype in four folio atlases in the BIOLOGIA. His photographs and casts documented many sites later disturbed or plundered. Michael Coe says, "It is impossible to exaggerate the importance to Maya research of Maudslay's published work." Coe goes on to call Maudslay the greatest single recorder of Mayan inscriptions. A massive and important pictorial work of American natural history, in what is certainly the finest copy extant.

        Flickor och sol. [Äv. "Midsommarblomster.]

Tuschlavering.

Doctor Syn A Tale of The Romney Marsh

London Thomas Nelson and Sons 1915. 8vo. 352pp. Publisher's dark blue cloth titled and decorated in white and gilt to spine and front board. Gilt bright and sharp, a little bumped to spine with some light edgewear to extremities. Very good. A solid and thoroughly good looking copy of this classic tale of smuggling and skullduggery more normally seen looking like it was fished out of a pond at midnight. Internally clean. Well. I say internally clean meaning no spotting or foxing or squashed mice jammed between the pages; in actual fact this is the Nettlefold Film Studios copy, bearing the signature of Archibald Nettlefold to the front flyleaf in pencil and a plethora of annotations, cutting instructions, edits and scene titles to each chapter. Clearly Nettlefold had every intention of producing a movie of Thorndike's smuggling novel, and this copy gives a detailed outline of the process he intended to follow. Originally Hepworth Studios, founded in 1899, the location in Waltham on Thames changed names in 1926; the demise of Hepworth's enterprise signalled a collossal disaster for the British film industry as it involved the destruction of the entire archive, meaning basically that 80% of the films made in Britain between 1900 and 1929 were forever lost to history. Nettlefold only converted to sound in the 1930's, and this marked up copy has the feel of something intended more for a silent treatment than a "talkie". The studios were taken over by Armstrong Vickers during WW2 and suffered considerable bomb damage before being sold in 1947. Eventually they were renamed Walton Studios, most famous for producing television series like "The Adventures of Robin Hood." Not only a very respectable copy of a difficult book, but also an intriguing piece of British cinema history. Doctor Syn wasn't filmed until 1963 under the title "Dr. Syn: Alias The Scarecrow." starring Patrick McGoohan and George Cole.

        Ziegenhirtin (Mutterslehn).

London: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1915 - Octavo, pp. [i-v] vi [vii-viii] 9-316 [317-318: ads] [319-320: blank], original pictorial olive-green cloth, front panel stamped in red and black, spine panel stamped in red. First edition, first issue. Presentation copy with signed inscription by Williams dated 21 March 1919 on front free endpaper. The recipient of the inscription, Madame Petrova, is almost certainly the actress who went by that name, Olga Petrova (born Muriel Harding in England), a successful screen actress during the teens and a stage actress and playwright afterwards. After complaints from the publisher of Florence Marryat's A SOUL ON FIRE (1898), Willams' novel was recalled and re-titled THEODORA: A SOUL ON FIRE with a canceled title page and new (plainer) binding. "Novel set in Montreal about a beautiful femme fatale, Theodora Carne, who unwittingly exercises a baleful influence on the men in her life. She may or may not be the reincarnation of a witch, but there's no question that her fiancés have a habit of dying after she reveals to them her troubling romantic history. Is it witchcraft? Mesmerism? Astral projection? Or merely some potent psychological dynamic at work? The novel ends up pointing to the last explanation but other supernatural incidents remain unexplained -- and there is the fact of all those 'accidental' deaths. A somewhat confused tale, and the lack of local color is disappointing, but the novel does have some atmospheric touches and provides fresh variations on the femme fatale theme." - Robert Eldridge. Scarborough, The Supernatural in Modern English Fiction, pp. 193- 4. Reginald 15368. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978). A clean, bright, nearly fine copy. A scarce book in either issue, but especially the first. (#148184) [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        "Zeppelin"

Paris: [Mabileau & Co.], 1915. Hand-coloured pochoir print. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling in the margins and the image. Small loss upper right edge. This LZ2 was built sometime between 1910 and 1914. Five airships of this design operated by Delag, safely carried 35,000 passengers between German cities. This was the first passenger air service in the world. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of motorized transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Airplanes. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she also used the name "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring.

Erste eigene Ausstellung in Zürich. Doctor Syn A Tale of The Romney Marsh

Thomas Nelson and Sons, London 1915 - 8vo. Syn: Alias The Scarecrow." starring Patrick McGoohan and George Cole. ecat2 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Anti-Semitic Lynching Photograph - "The End of Leo Frank, Hung by a Mob at Marietta, GA., Aug. 17, 1915"

Marietta, Georgia, 1915. Photograph. Real photograph postcard showing the lynching of Leo Frank. Horizontal crease, otherwise in nice shape. This photograph documents one of the most infamous lynchings in American history, that of Jewish pencil factory superintendent Leo Frank, who was convicted in 1913 for murdering his young employee, 13-year-old Mary Phagan. On 26 April 1913, Mary Phagan was found strangled to death in the basement of the National Pencil Company factory in Atlanta after having apparently been raped. Two semi-literate letters found at the scene cast suspicion upon the African-American night watchman, Newt Lee, however when the police interviewed James "Jim" Conley, a African-American janitor who was also under scrutiny, Conley claimed that Frank had killed Phagan and then paid him to write the letters and hide the body in the basement. In exchange for his testimony, Conley was only sentenced to one year in jail as an accomplice after the fact. Frank was convicted and sentenced to death based upon Conley's testimony, however many believed that he was innocent. In time, additional evidence was found that indicated Conley had likely acted alone, and Georgia Governor John M. Stanton commuted Frank's sentence to life imprisonment. Although Atlanta had a reputation as a welcoming and hospitable home for its large Jewish community, anti-Georgia publicity (funded by the American Jewish Committee) and pro-Frank national newspaper coverage (especially by the New York Times) throughout the trial and appeals process inflamed latent anti-Semitic feelings within the city. Shortly after the commutation, a semi-secret gang of prominent Georgians (including a former governor and the mayor of Marietta) launched a night assault on the state prison at Milledgeville where they successfully kidnapped Leo Frank. Frank was taken to Fry's Gin, just east of Marietta, where he was murdered. Although a photographer recorded the lynching, the pictures were kept somewhat secret as they clearly showed the lynch mob, however real photo postcards were printed and sold to locals at Marietta stores for 25 cents each. An exceptionally scarce piece of anti-Semitic Americana. The Rare Book Hub shows only one record of a Leo Frank real photo postcard having been sold at auction; one sold at a Sotheby's Photograph Auction for $3,125 on 3 October 2012.

ALS to William Edward Norris, from 21 Carlyle Mansions, August 4th, 1915.

1915 1915 - 43 lines on both sides of a single quarto sheet of headed paper. An affectionate letter from James to his friend and fellow author William Edward Norris, written only 7 days after he had become a British citizen and seven months before his death in February 1916. James had been overwhelmed by the 'avalanche of those [letters] I have received, all of the friendliest and most welcoming kind' that followed his changing of national allegiance. Angry at the Americans' refusal to support the Great War and vexed at the practical difficulties of being an alien in Britain - after the outbreak of war James needed official permission to go to his house in Rye - James swore allegiance to the King on July 26, witnessed by his friends, the Prime Minister Herbert Asquith, Edmund Gosse, George Prothero and J.B. Pinker. 'Of course I could do absolutely and utterly nothing but make it [the decision] . I am not sprouting into new feathers and union-jacks - all that was long ago discounted'. For some time James had wrestled with his identity; pushed away from America and drawn towards his adopted land. As he puts it himself in a letter to Gosse on the day of his patriation: 'the process [of becoming officially British] has only shown me what I virtually was - so that it's rather disappointing in respect to acute sensation. I haven't any, I blush to confess!'. James was greatly affected by the outbreak of war in 1914, his anguish visible in a letter to Rhoda Broughton: 'Black and hideous to me is the tragedy that gathers and I'm sick beyond cure to have lived to see it'. To Norris he writes: 'I can't, I find, with the public situation what it is, face the solitude & sequestration of Rye - it makes me eat my heart out'. 'I don't want anything kept up damn it!' James continues, 'but the country and you!' This was not the first time James had written to Norris to describe his evolving feelings of nationality. In a letter dated February 4, 1896 he wrote: 'The American outbreak [in reference to the Venezuela Crisis of 1895] has darkened all my sky - and made me feel among many things, how long I have lived away from my native land, how long I shall live away from it and how little I understand it today'. The great warmth and affection shown to Norris stemmed from a friendship dating back over a decade. It was Norris who, in 1894, provided moral support to James after the disastrous and violent reaction to the first performance of his play Guy Domville. In a state of melancholy James 'bolted' to Torquay, where Norris lived, spending many days recuperating with his friend, 'the gentlest and sweetest of men'. William Norris, 1847-1925, was a prolific and successful author; his first novel Heaps of Money, 1877, was followed by the vastly popular Mademoiselle De Mersac, 1880. His final novel, Trevalion was published in 1925, the year of his death. PLEASE NOTE: For customers within the UK and the EU, this item is subject to VAT. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
