A Christmas Toast with Greeting. "To the Day"

Ca 1915 - A Christmas greeting with a possible tribute to the soldiers of the Dardanelles, this pristine standing banner contains the phrase "our Brave Boys in Khaki". The phrase "our brave boys in khaki" appears in an advertisement for a "war drama" being presented in June of 1915, which states, "To-night we finally screen Our Grand Patriotic War Drama, Vividly illustrating the gallant and heroic deeds of our brave boys in khaki. The sang froid and coolness of the Colonial troops under fire was a marked feature of the forcing of the Dardanelles." (Dominion, Volume 8, Issue 2488, 15 June 1915, Page 7). The Christmas greeting is in the form of a small standing table decoration, a printed silk banner with silver cord fringe and wooden post, which can be inserted into a wooden base so that the banner is displayed upright. In the original white moire-design covered box. The text, printed in red, reads 'A Christmas Toast with Greeting. "TO THE DAY" Here's to THE DAY when we've proved to the HUN, That the Bombastic Rule of THE KAISER is done, And our Brave Boys in Khaki have made it quite plain, Tis a Fight to a Finish and Never Again.' Not dated, but certainly a contemporary Christmas greeting. The Banner stands at 6 1/4" tall by 4" wide. Fine condition; the lower half of the box with short split at one edge.

Autograph letter signed "U Giordano" to the journalist Marescotti.

3 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated April 5, 1915. In black ink. On stationery with "Villa Fedora Baveno" embossed at head. In Italian (with translation). Giordano will have Mr. Carozzelli, of the Sonzogno publishing firm, send Marescotti a piano-vocal score and libretto of his opera, Madame Sans Gêne. He hopes that Marescotti, a critic, will write a few complementary things about the opera. "I'm glad that you speak about [the opera] with your competence, [which is] evident from the Encyclopedia, and I hope that this time you will want to write differently than before, a few flattering things for me." Very slightly worn and soiled; creased at folds. . "Giordano handled the late Romantic, emotionally vehement idiom of the giovane scuola with ease and fluency, being particularly skilful in weaving into his scores elements of local and historical colour... His stage sense is always sure, and his vocal writing unfailingly effective." Julien Budden in Grove Music Online. Giordano's opera, Madame Sans Gêne, was first performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York on January 25, 1915. Marescotti was a critic for the journal, Musici e Musicisti, which was the organ of the Casa Ricordi. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries a great rivalry existed between Ricordi and Sonzogno, the two most important Italian publishing firms of the period. This may explain why Marescotti had been critical of Giordano, whose works Sonzogno championed.

The expedition systematically explored King George V Land and the Terre Adelie. It also charted the whole 2000 mile coastline from the Mertz Glacier and Garssberg, thereby connecting the discoveries of Wilkes and Dumont d'Urville, Scott and Drygalski.         RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM. Rendered into English verse by Edward Fitzgerald With Illustrations by Edmund Dulac.

London Hodder and Stoughton n.d., circa 1915 - 20 beautiful full page color plates by Edmund Dulac. 4to, publisher’s original full red cloth lettered and elaborately decorated in pictorial designs in gilt on the spine and upper cover. A very bright, clean and handsome copy with exceptional color plates. FIRST EDITION IN THE BRIGHT RED CLOTH. Announced in June 1909, Edward Fitzgerald’s translation of the 12th century Persian RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM, newly illustrated by Edmund Dulac, became the Gift Book of the year. Each page of verses or quatrains was printed on heavy paper surrounded by delicate borders and was frequently interspersed with Dulac’s evocative paintings. After the RUBAIYAT’S publication in America, its US publisher wrote of the book."In point of excellence of art, popularity, distinction and profit the crowning achievement.was the publication of the Fitzgerald version of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam illustrated by Edmund Dulac. The book was a joy and a treasure, Its public acceptance was immediate and great." -A.Hughey. One can see why the book received such immediate and unalloyed admiration. For on these twenty exquisitely detailed pages, one finds unsurpassed artistic expression. The viewer is irresistibly drawn into the Persian poetical world of starry nights, labrythine bazaars, dusty streets, flower perfumed bowers, and sultry royal palaces. We can almost smell the pungent incense and feel the hot air move as the fan stirs a tiny breeze. We are palpably drawn into Dulac’s hypnotic images of Middle Eastern sensation and emotion. The artist used intense but subtle tones of color to create a rich tapestry of visual contrasts, page after page. Pale flesh is swathed in delicate patterned silks and set to pose on hillsides of velvet grass. Figures emerge from opalescent nights and drink thirstily from silver goblets. Dulac vividly captures the temptations of the senses as Omar himself succumbed to them. The RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM illustrations portray a humanity, poignant and complex, as perhaps nowhere else in Dulac’s repertoire. The modern reader can partake of Fitzgerald’s spell-binding translation of one of the finest poems ever written, while sipping the spiced wine of Dulac’s sensuous illustrations.         [Manuscrit autographe inédit] "La rime"

Manuscrit. Bon.

Manuscript - Letter & Publishing Agreement for his Controversial Book Titled "With the German Armies in the West"

London, 1915. [London], 10 March 1915. Memorandum of agreement between Sir Sven Hedin and John Lane, for the translation and publication Sven Hedin's then controversial book which would shortly thereafter be released with the title "With the German Armies in the West." 8vo. 3 page typescript agreement made by the publisher with manuscript date and initialled annotations. Single leafs measuring approximately 20 x 25 cm. Together with the original blue envelope also annotated in manuscript by the publisher, and measuring approximately 9,5 x 22,5 cm. Very good condition. This document is an original draft agreement for an invaluable work by respected explorer and author Sven Hedin, an especially notable title for the period as it was rare that such an unbridled account would be made available from the German side of the Western Front. At the time of this agreement the book had not been titled. The publisher, John Lane of The Bodley Head, was commissioned to translate and publish an English version of Hedin's Swedish volume, "Fran Frontin i Vaster" [From the Western Front]. When released, a few months later, "With the German Armies in the West" elicited scathing reviews accusing the work of having a decisively German perspective and unlimited admiration for the German Kaiser Wilhelm II. However it also received great admiration for its candid and intimate description of the German army. First written by Hedin in Swedish, it was translated into English by Harold Gerhard de Walterstorff, and published in London and New York by John Lane. A unique and singular document to pair with the collector's volume, the agreement defines royalties, production rights in "the United Kingdom, the Colonies, India and the United States of America," the author's gratuitous copies (only six), use of illustrations, and some of the terms for possible later editions should there be any. Not surprisingly, Hedin chose British publisher John Lane (1854-1925) to work with. Lane was reputed for publishing controversial and unconventional texts. When the book was released, the publisher was highly criticized for presenting German soldiers as normal people rather than the monsters of British demonology. Hedin of course was the target of vehement attacks by some reviewers who saw him as pro-German. Having many social and political ties to Germany, during the First World War Sven Hedin was permitted to tour the West and East Fronts. Of particular interest was the German side of the Western Front, visited in late 1914. At the time of his visit, the Western Front had largely stabilized, enabling him to visit both rear and front positions in Belgium, France, Germany and Luxembourg. He befriended many Germans along the way, and met with the very highest members of the German military and government. He was fired upon at least twice, once by a British destroyer while in Belgium. John Lane (1854-1925) was a British publisher and antiquarian book trader. After entering the London book trade, in 1887 he became co-founder of The Bodley Head, originally a firm that dealt with antiquarian books. They later went into publishing. Lane is mainly associated with publishing controversial and audacious texts, especially for a small, sophisticated audience. . Very Good.

[AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED ("LOVE TO ALL, ALLAN"), FROM ALLAN BEATTIE TO MARC (BOWMAN), A TWELVE-PAGE SURVIVOR'S ACCOUNT OF THE SINKING OF THE LUSITANIA]

Folkestone [England], 1915. Quarto. With typed transcript. Old folds, large pinhole in top center margin. Old envelope of Lewis-Clark Hotel, Lewiston, Idaho, with "Allan Beatty's letter" in ink. Fine. In a half morocco and cloth box, leather labels. A dramatic and detailed account by a survivor of the sinking of the Lusitania. Allan Beattie, eighteen, of Winnipeg, travelling Second Cabin with his mother Grace, was sitting on the hurricane deck when the ship was struck. "I got an awful smash in the back from the water and was thrown about thirty feet on my face. I got up and ran down stairs people were pouring up from the decks below and I caught sight of Mother. I ran up to her and kissed her goodbye, then I lost her for a while....I thought to myself I haven't much of chance if I don't get a life belt so I thought a minute and then rushed down to my own stateroom and grabbed my own belt....I had to hang on the side of my bed to get a hold of it. The lights were practically all out." He gave away the first life belt he found, then went down three decks to his stateroom to get his own life belt. Returning topside despite "a pretty hard time," he met his mother again. "She says, 'I am not nervous I don't think there is much danger do you?' I replied that 'It looked about as bad as it could' and I told her to take my life belt but she refused, I made her put it on after promising that I would get another. I kissed her goodbye again and just as I got the top straps of her life belt tied, the boat went down. I was sent sliding the whole width of the deck." Allan was flung free, and was soon picked up by a life boat. He describes how the boat soon became perilously crowded. When another boat was located, survivors were shifted across. In due course his boat was rescued by the Flying Fish, and the survivors were brought to Queenstown. Beattie (whose first name is given as "Allen" in the NEW YORK TIMES list of survivors), writes his correspondent: "Mother is gone, and altho we have not heard of her I don't think that she can be alive." Beattie appears to have been one of the Lusitania survivors who were profoundly traumatized by the incident. He was rejected from military service because of poor eyesight and was reported to have suffered a series of breakdowns beginning in 1920, and was unable to hold steady employment. A remarkable, detailed narrative by a survivor of one of the most notorious maritime disasters of the 20th century, written in the immediate aftermath of the event, by a young man whose actions show proof of calmness in the tumult.

THE MAN WHO ROCKED THE EARTH .

Garden City: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1915 - Octavo, pp. [1-4] [1-2] 3-228, inserted frontispiece with color illustration by Walter L. Green, original pictorial dark blue cloth, front panel stamped in lavender, black and gold, spine panel stamped in gold, pictorial endpapers. First edition. An early atomic war novel, originally published as a serial in the SATURDAY EVENING POST, 14-28 November 1914. "The near future course of WWI is interrupted by messages from a mysterious PAX threatening super scientific punishments if war is not stopped. After some demonstrations, featuring rays, a flying ship and atomic energy, the nations obey." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 1236. "Unusual in early science- fiction in paying heed to correct science. Many of Wood's scientific details are still valid, although the extrapolations from them are, of course, fantastic." - Bleiler, Science- Fiction: The Early Years 2199. "Indebted to Wells's THE WORLD SET FREE of a year earlier, to which [the novel] explicitly refers." - Brians, Nuclear Holocausts: Atomic War in Fiction, 1895-1984, p. 326. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 2-147; (1981) 1-159; (1987) 1-91; and (1995) 1-91. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s- 1930s 754. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 214. In 333. Bleiler (1978), p. 195. Reginald 14210. A fine copy in very good pictorial dust jacket (reproducing the color frontispiece on front panel) with shelf wear at edges, shallow chips from tail of spine panel and bottom edge of front panel, and dust soiling, mainly to spine and rear panels. A nice example of this scarce jacket. (#147208) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Photo Album]: American Expeditionary Force WWI

France. 1915-1917. Oblong quarto. Measuring 10" x 12.5". Black leather photo album. A collection of 244 sepia toned or black and white photographs measuring between 2.5" x 3.5" and 3.5" x 6", some with captions. A good only photo album with detached pages with very good or better photographs affixed to stiff black paper. A photo album containing photos of a marina around 1915 as well as photos apparently taken by a seaman in World War I. The early photographs show a group of men working on a large ship, both docked and at sea, including images of passing ships, men at the ship's wheel, and one of an unnamed lighthouse. After a break in the album, the second half shows a man's service, with either the Marines or Navy during World War I as part of the 1st American Expeditionary Force to France on the U.S.S. Seattle in 1917. They docked at Port St. Nazaire in France, seen here, and were the first American troops in France. According to historian, Fred Baldwin, "The USA had joined the war, fighting alongside the Allies, and chose Saint-Nazaire as one of their most important entry harbors to France and Western European battlefields. Between 1917 and 1919, almost 198,000 troops and a daily average of 4,000 tons of material transited through Saint-Nazaire." These pictures show the first U.S. troops marching through St. Nazaire, local women working for the war effort, and a photograph captioned "U.S. aeroplane." Depicted here are French troops dubbed "Frenchies" as well as French children. A few pages show German prisoners with captions like, "glad to talk to we Americans," "well fed and happy," and "glad to be in France," which assumes the lives of P.O.W.s in France was preferable to life in the trenches. There are uncaptioned photos of European towns and local people as well as sailors posed in uniform in front of stately homes and in town squares. One photo shows a group of U.S. Marines engaged in Fourth of July activities on board ship in 1917. The last few pages show the men leaving port with at-sea photographs of the crew, a large group of uniformed soldiers presumably waiting to be offloaded for a mission, and passing ships including an unnamed medical vessel. An extensive collection of an American seaman's duty during World War I. .
