Jagd-Geschichten am Okowango Belgisch-Kongo (Afrika) des Afrikaforschers und Jägers Paul Adolf Schramm.

Eigendruck, o.J. (um 1915). - Eigentl. Okavango, Deutsch-Südwestafrika. Farbig illustrierter Original-Kartoneinband, Groß-8°, 49 Seiten. Mit 6 photographischen Abbildungen auf Tafeln: Owambo Kapitän mit Sohn, Gefährlicher Wassersturz - Seitenarm des Okowango, Buschmannsfrau aus dem Hukwedurstfeld, Raubzeug-Fallen der Eingeborenen, Kapo-Fälle des Okowango. Gutes, sauberes Exemplar. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        The Prelude An Autobiographical Poem

Hammersmith: Doves Press, 1915. One of 155 copies. Printed in red and black throughout.Sm. 4to., original limp vellum with the stamp of The Doves Bindery, gilt lettering on spine. Slight bowing to the limp vellum but generally a very good copy. In writing the Prelude over many years Wordsworth's self proclaimed intention was "to compose a philosophical Poem, containing views of Man, Nature, and Society...having for its principal subject, the sensations and opinions of a poet living in retirement." It was originally planned that Coleridge and Wordsworth would work together on a three part epic with the intention of surpassing Milton's <em>Paradise Lost</em>. In the end only the Prelude was written by Wordsworth and it was published after his death in 1850 by his wife Mary.

        Of Human Bondage.

London: William Heinemann,, 1915. A Novel. Octavo. Original blue cloth, gilt lettered spine and front cover, Maugham's device in gilt on front cover. Housed in a custom green cloth chemise and green quarter morocco slipcase. Slight vertical indentation at foot of first dozen leaves. A particularly attractive copy of a rather fragile book. First UK edition, first impression, printed from the first issue American plates with the misprint at p. 257, line 4; "some copies contain 16 pp. inserted advertisements, with no significance for issue" (Stott). "The novel was coolly received in Britain and America and became a best-seller only after an effusive review by the influential American critic and distinguished novelist Theodore Dreiser in the New Republic (25 December 1915), in which he described the book as of 'the utmost importance' and its author as a 'great artist'" (ODNB). The English edition in this condition is very uncommon.

        CHRISTMAS CAROL

London and Philadelphia William Heinemann and J. B. Lippincott Co. 1915 - LIMITED DE LUXE EDITION SIGNED BY ARTHUR RACKHAM, one of only 525 hand-numbered copies. This limited edition is printed on significantly larger paper then the trade issue. With 12 tipped-in haunting colour plates, 18 black and white illustrations and line drawings by Arthur Rackham, endpapers designed and illustrated by the artist. 4to, publisher&#146;s de luxe full vellum, beautifully decorated and lettered in gilt on on both the spine and the upper cover in Christmas motif, t.e.g. xv, 147 pp. A very bright, fine and desirable copy of this limited edition, the text very fine indeed without spot or flaw, the plates all pristine with tissue-guards intact, the vellum fresh and bright, without ties as often, some spotting to the end-leaves as often. The elusive limited signed edition of an extraordinary piece of literature, surely one of both Charles Dickens' and Arthur Rackham&#146;s best books. ONE OF THE GREATEST COMBINATIONS OF AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR YET PUBLISHED. The artist successfully incorporated the &#145;Phiz&#146; and Cruikshank styles into his own to create striking renditions of Victorian London with ample room to uniquely evoke ghostly fantasy images as well. His almost characterized depictions of Scrooge, features chiseled and grotesque, are as bone-chilling as his fantastic entourages of moaning ghouls. The muted, shadowed atmospheric tones so characteristically Rackham, support Dickens&#146; eerie tale wonderfully. Some examples of Rackham&#146;s emerging special talent for silhouette are also included. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        The Golden Cockerel].

Sytin Moskva 1915 - Folio. 12 pp., multiple chomolithographs. Publisher's wrappers. Excellent example of this rare edition of Pushkin's fairy-tale, finely illustrated by an unknown artist, very much in the style of Bilibin. Having opened his first printing house in 1876, Ivan Dmitrievich Sytin achieved national recognition already in 1882, when he was awarded a medal for his printed production at the All-Russia Industrial Exhibition. An art school founded by Sytin at the turn of the century provided his publishing house with its own highly skilled artists and allowed the publisher to start specialising in illustrated editions. Especially famous were Sytin's books for children. They were illustrated in the best traditions of Ivan Bilibin's art inspired by the Russian folk culture. Stunning design combined with high quality production ensured that the name "Sytin" became a mark of the best quality in the Russian publishing. Not in Seslavinskiy.         THE SIGNATURE, Vols 1-3

Published privately for subscribers only 1915 - Volumes 1-3 (of 3), octavo. Original brown paper wrappers. Staples rusting with resultant staining to some pages of vol 3 but very slight, vol 2 with minor loss to bottom edge (narrow strip) extending 3cm both sides of the spine, and with a small mark on lower wrapper. Near fine overall, housed in a matching cloth-covered chemise. An assiduous former owner has noted in light pencil (faded) the typographical errors within each volume on its rear cover. One of the editors? The fine handwriting could be Middleton Murry's or even Lawrence's. With contributions by Lawrence, Katherine Mansfield (writing as Matilda Berry) and John Middleton Murry. According to Murry in his Reminiscences, The Signature was begun to further Lawrence's doctrine for a revolutionary society. Six numbers were envisaged by the editors, however only three appeared before the magazine folded due to a lack of subscribers. Lawrence contributed a series of essays with the collective title The Crown, later collected in Reflections on the Death of a Porcupine and Other Essays (1925). Together with loosely inserted correspondence between Mr W Forster, John Middleton Murry (one TLs) and the bookseller Bertram Rota as to where Forster could obtain a set of The Signature. In his letter Murry explains that his only copy has been stolen (could this be it?) and suggests that he writes to S.S. Koteliansky. The latter was another of Lawrence's inner circle who appears to have acted as treasurer for the magazine. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        THE HOME OF THE BLIZZARD

William Heinemann, London 1915 - Mawson, Douglas. THE HOME OF THE BLIZZARD. Being The Story Of The Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914. London, 1915, William Heinemann, First U.K. Edition. Two volume set, thick over-sized octavo. Volume I, 349 pp, volume II, 338 pp. Complete, with sepia coloured frontispieces and numerous plates, including 12 panoramas, many maps, charts and sketches, some folding, 21 coloured plates with captioned tissue-guards, and three folding maps in endpocket of Volume II. This classic of polar literature combines a quest for science with one of the most exciting stories of survival, and includes important and magnificent photography by Frank Hurley. Mawson's story covers exploration in King George V Land and Adelie Land, previously almost entirely unknown. He helped chart more than 2,000 miles of coastline and several glaciers. On one excursion in 1912 with two companions, Ninnis was lost down a crevasse together with six of their dogs, most of their food rations, and important supplies. Forced to use their remaining dogs as food, Mawson and Mertz began to suffer from symptoms of Vitamin A poisoning, brought on by ingesting husky liver. Mertz finally succumbed following bouts of irrationality. Mawson had a narrow escape himself in a crevasse, and made it back to their base alone just a few hours after their ship had left. He describes seeing his ship departing, which meant he had to winter over with the six remaining men who had stayed behind to wait for him. During that winter, Mawson had plenty of time to reflect upon and to write about his experiences. In the book he more closely defines the position of the South Magnetic Pole. The Home Of The Blizzard remains a true classic of exploration, reprinted many times, and this is the First Edition. Original dark blue cloth lettered in gilt on the spines and covers, stamped silver pictorial Illustration 'leaning on the wind' on upper front covers, worn on Volume II. Publisher's blindstamped device on back covers. Both volumes with professionally re-cased spines, preserving all cloth, and with quality new and matching endpapers. Light wear to boards, bumped and slightly frayed corners on Volume I, and a few dings and stains on covers, but otherwise a tight, clean and excellent set of the scarce First Edition. Association copies, with inscription "To my Best Pal" (it was Dick Richards of the Ross Sea Party), signed by Ernest Joyce, "Joycey", and dated "12-4-23" on endpaper prior to half-title page, on both volumes, with an additional "(From his ould Shipmate)" on Volume I. Ernest Joyce, Royal Navy seaman, served on four Antarctic expeditions during the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration, under the commands of Scott, Shackleton and Mawson. Decorative Boards, VG+ condition. NZ$3,000 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

HOME OF THE BLIZZARD: Being the Story of the Australian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914

Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Company, 1915. 2 volumes. First edition. The English sheets were used for the copies offered by Lippincott. The bindings are as the first English printings with all spine and cover lettering and decorations in silver. Portrait frontispiece, 21 color plates, profusion of plates and illustrations in text, 3 folding maps in rear pocket of volume 2. Large, thick 8vo, publisher’s original dark blue cloth lettered in silver on the spines and covers, and pictorially decorated with silver devices on the upper covers. xxx, 349; xiii, 338 pp. A very well preserved and handsome set. The text very clean and quite bright, the cloth and bindings in nice condition, some light, unobtrusive mellowing to the spine panels, the bindings handsome and in good order and still very attractive with the condition of the heads, tails and tips all quite pleasing, some old shelf numbers coloured over, the silver pictorial devices and the silver lettering to the covers are in quite nice condition, hinges tight and strong and in a fine state, maps in excellent condition. A well preserved set of this very important book. FIRST EDITION, U.S ISSUANCE USING THE ENGLISH SHEETS AND BINDING DESIGNS, PRINTED AND BOUND IN ENGLAND, SCARCE AND HIGHLY IMPORTANT ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION. Mawson's account of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition in the "Aurora." Mawson made a solitary sledge journey of over 160 miles of the most treacherous and wind-lashed ice in Antarctica. The expedition systematically explored King George V Land and the Terre Adelie. It also charted the whole 2000 mile coastline from the Mertz Glacier and Garssberg, thereby connecting the discoveries of Wilkes and Dumont d'Urville, Scott and Drygalski. During a second sledging journey, however, Mawson's two companions perished and he was only just able to save his own life by dragging a sledge he'd cut in two to save weight back to Cape Denison. One of the most important works on Antarctica, quite scarce.

Memoirs of the Lowell Observatory: Memoir on a trans-Neptunian Planet and Memoir on Saturn's Rings [Two Volumes]

Thos. P. Nichols & Son Co, Lynn, MA. 1915 - Quarto. In two Volumes. Lowell was an American astronomer who predicted the existence of a planet beyond the orbit of Neptune. He published a series of "Memoirs of the Lowell Observatory" containing theoretical researches of his personal studies of a "Trans-Neptuneian Planet" and of the structure of "Saturn's Rings". In volume one he attributed certain irregularities to the action of an unseen planet beyond Neptune and calculated its probable position. In 1905 he organized a systematic search for the planet by the staff of his observatory, and in 1915 he published his Memoir on a Trans-Neptunian Planet. Fourteen years after his death the search culminated in the discovery of Pluto. Volume two contains his observations and calculations of Saturn's rotation and the density of its rings. Volume 1, No. 1: 105pp. with nine plates (two double-page) situated at the rear, bound in original printed wraps with stripes (off-setting from cardboard box but not present) . Volume 1, No. 2: 22pp. 2 plates. Bound in original printed wraps. Both volumes are in absolute fine condition save for the stripes. No names, tears or loss of any kind. Laid into volume one is a card "compliments of the writer". Quite rare to have both copies. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Story of the Munsters, at Etreux-Festubert-Rue Du Bois

, 1915. 1st edition. 56 pages in soft brown card as issued, stapled, some extremity wear, colour regimental flags on the front cover, some b/w photos of the principal officers, some red biro emendations in the margins by 'D.M.L', who shows a clear knowledge of events and officers involved. The Royal Munster Fusiliers, already a highly distinguished regiment over the previous two centuries, were involved in some of the fiercest and most courageous fighting on the Western Front in World War One, losing many troops and officers. This account of their stands in 1914 & 1915 at Etreux, Festubert and Rue Du Bois, is by the widow of Lt-Col Rickard, commander of 2nd Battalion R.M.F, who was killed in action at Rue Du Bois. An Appendix contains 10 letters, a passage from a speech by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and three messages of congratulations and appreciation from General Officers. No other extant copy online, so completely unique. Additionally, it comes with an oblong booklet also in soft covers, side-bound with cord, with some extremity wear, which contains 28 photographs of the 2nd Battalion when it was stationed in Cairo in 1920/21. The photos include officers, staff sergeants, colour sergeants, corporals, the various companies, the band, sports teams, battle honours, the 'Men of Mons' etc, many with the names of the troops on opposite pages. Again, this is a unique copy as far as we are aware. The two items together demonstrate the prowess of one of the great regiments in British and Irish history.

Nursery Rhymes Set to New Tunes

Chelsea: (Southernwood Press, 1915. Winser, Josephine. Small quarto. (23)ff. One of thirty copies printed on handmade paper. Illustrated throughout by Josephine Winser. The drawings illustrate popular nursery rhymes, including Humpty Dumpty, Baa Baa Black Sheep, Jack & Jill, and Sing a Song of Sixpence. Children take center stage in these depictions, whether presenting the blackbird-filled pie to the king or herding sheep into the pasture. The images appear on the versos of the pages, opposite the music and lyrics for each nursery rhyme. Winser's illustrations show elements of Art Nouveau style, with decorative pictorial borders framing each scene, and are reminiscent of the work of Walter Crane. Although not noted in the book, this title was printed by the Curwen Press for the Southernwood Press. Of exceptional scarcity, and perhaps one of the earliest deluxe books combining music and illustrations to come from the Curwen Press. Light offsetting to endpapers, else extremely fine in original vellum-backed grey boards with title in gilt on upper cover. (Tomkinson, p. 231).

[Cabinet Photographs]: Hunting and Hunting Lodge Photos

[Circa 1915]. 12 gelatin silver cabinet photographs. Images are 3.25" x 5.5", each mounted on 5.25" x 7.5" thick card stock. The images are uncaptioned, but provenance suggests they are from Pennsylvania or New York State. One image has a smear in the emulsion in the bottom left corner else they are near fine. The well-composed photographs depict a group of men either in the field or in or around a hunting lodge. The men are depicted with guns, dogs, carcasses of small animals, or sleeping or eating in groups. A cohesive and subject specific group of unusually nice images. .
