THE RAINBOW.

Methuen [1915] - 8vo. Laid into this copy is an historic Lawrence ALS to his agent, J. B. Pinker, dated "17 Nov. 1915," in which he reacts emotionally to the seizure by the police of most of the edition of "The Rainbow" because of the novel's alleged sexual explicitness. Lawrence asks: "Must I stay for the proceedings about The Rainbow? Must I appear? . I have had letters from a lot of people about The Rainbow . I want to do what I can for the book. Also I want to go away [on a trip to America]. I will stay if it is any good." The letter clearly evinces Lawrence's puzzlement over the novel's suppression, of which only 821 copies of a total edition of 2500 copies survived and were subsequently distributed. The florid 1989 Ken Russell movie, which followed his successful screen adaptation of "Women In Love" two decades earlier, failed to attract much critical and popular attention. Remarkably, this copy, as-new in an as-new dust jacket, seemingly lay untouched from the time of its publication and was not exposed to any physical element that might have compromised its singular beauty. Housed in a custom-made quarter morocco clamshell box. When did you last see a one-hundred-year-old who looks a ravishing nineteen [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Solntse Rossii. Khudozhestvenny illiustrirovanny zhurnal.

- Sollntse Rossi was a Russian weekly magazine, published in St. Petersburg between 1910-1916 by Alexander E. Kogan (1878-1949). In this culturally and historically diversified newspaper were among others Works of Arkady Averchenko, Sasha Chorny, Basil Adikaevsky, Alexander Perfilev, Nikolai Agnivtsev and Ivan Grabowski published. Also by renowned photographers such as Moisei Nappelbaum, Peter Adolfovich Otsup etc. which photographers were reproduced in beautiful gravure printing plates. Our compilation consists of 40 individual numbers of the war the vintage 1915. The numbers were previously involved in a highly gebrauchsspurigem Publishing Binding and numerically continuously. but the vintage was not complete. The magazines missing except the last there embedded number, the back covers, but are content complete and cover each number about 16 pages. Usually the leaves are loosened and now and again loosely, on the back here and there are some remnants of the old assembly book cover, very occasional tears, slightly discolored, the famous colored front cover (by renowned Russian artists of the time illustrated) available. Some numbers without front cover we attach to it, but they do not belong in the count. - Insg. an outstanding collection of this important Russian magazine, with a wealth of articles on the war events, the ballet, the population (among others also an article about Russian Jews), an article on Tolstoy, further to artists, actors and even reports of foreign nations.         X Rays and Crystal Structure

London: G. Bell and Sons, Ltd.,, 1915. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt, double-line border to boards in blind. Four photographic plates. Spine somewhat faded and dulled, a few minor marks to cloth and light rubbing to extremities, residue of library stamps to spine, Cambridge University Chemical Laboratory library ink stamp to title page and occasional pages and plates within, later Churchill College Cambridge library stamp and deaccession slip, residue from removed library slip, pencil notes on the book and provenance to front pastedown. Sound, clean but for the library markings, a very good copy withal. First edition, first impression, presentation copy, of the first textbook on x-ray crystallography, for which its authors won the Nobel Prize. This copy has a presentation slip pasted down to the front free endpaper verso printed in red reading "Sent at the Request of the Author. York House, Portugal Street, W.C.", and the ink ownership inscription on the title page of Professor Sir William Jackson Pope KBE FRS (1870-1939), a prominent English Chemist noted for his crystallographic research using a goniometer, and his work in the field of stereochemistry. He was Fellow of the Royal Society from 1902 and Professor of Chemistry at Cambridge from 1908. During the First World War he served on the Board of Invention and Research for the Admiralty and on the Chemical Warfare committee at the Ministry of Munitions, being appointed CBE in 1918 and KBE in 1919. This copy has the library stamps of the Cambridge University Chemical Laboratory, and is a highly appropriate association copy presented "at the Request of the Author" (a seemingly more personal and deliberate manner of presentation than the rather more common "Presentation Copy" blind-stamp extant in a number of other copies. Author William Henry Bragg (1862?1942) was a mathematician and physicist who did important early work on radioactivity. He was a scholar at Trinity College Cambridge and gained a first class degree in Mathematics. He invented the x-ray spectrometer and with his son William Lawrence (1890?1971) invented x-ray crystallography, the science of using of x-ray diffraction patterns to determine the structure of molecules. This book describing their discoveries became the standard guide to this rapidly expanding and highly influential field, and the Braggs were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1915, with Bragg Jr. today remaining the youngest person to have achieved the honour. The younger Bragg went on to have an illustrious career, being appointed Cavendish professor of Physics at Cambridge in 1938 and presiding over the work of Watson and Crick during their discovery of the structure of DNA, made possible by x-ray crystallography. The Braggs' work was noted in Printing and the Mind of Man to have "virtually given the science of crystallography a new basis. Thus the fundamentally differenet qualities of two forms of carbon, graphite and diamond,a re seen to be due to differences in the arrangements of the atoms and in the distances between them. This makes it possible in the commercial laboratory to build new substances and materials based on the arrangement of atoms that will ensure certain desired qualities." (PMM)

Board game, "You will laugh too if you KANGAROO!"

New York:: Kangaroo Corporation; Gray Lith. Co.,. 1915.. A large laughing female kangaroo with a joey in her pouch who says "Be Happy at Home!" to another young kangaroo asking "Why such joy?" decorates the triangular box lid of this amusing bright orange and purple 1915 peg board game. The playing board itself is framed with the text, "You can't be blue if you KANGAROO.... No trouble troubles you." The unusual triangular box features three kangaroos on the top lid, with edges decorated with horse shoes and shamrocks on a purple ground. The instructions are printed on the under side of the top lid, including the offer of a $500 reward. The Kangaroo Corporation offered the prize for any correct solution to the game, which involves landing the King in Goal No. 14. "The above prize to be awarded January 15, 1916." 25 numbered holes on the board, with all but one hole for small wooden pegs. 11 pegs are lacking. The object of the game was to jump holes so that only the King remained in hole number 14, in the manner of Chinese checkers. Each side of the triangular box measures 9 1/4". The box printed by Gray Lith. Co. N.Y.;1915 copyright by the Kangaroo Corporation. The top lid with some fading, a scratch in the lower right corner, rubbed at edges, corners repaired with sticky tape. The board interior with color more vivid, just a bit of wear around numbered peg holes.

Genealogical and Personal History of Western Pennsylvania

Scarce History Books - Genealogical and Personal History of Western- Pennsylvania. 1,789 pages. Q. One half Morocco. New York: Lewis Historical Publishing Company, 1915. Three Volumes. First Edition. First Printing. Out of Print.Personal History of Western Pennsylvania, presents in the aggregate an amount and variety of genealogical and persona! information and portraiture unequaled by any kindred publication. No similar work concerning Western Pennsylvania has ever before been presented, and it contains a vast amount of ancestral history never before printed. The object, clearly defined and well digested, is to present in concise f(jrm the history of Western Pennsylvania Families of the Colonial Days. There are numerous voluminous histories of the State, making it unnecessary in this work to even outline its annals. What has been published, however, relates principally to civic life. The amplification necessary to complete the picture, old and nowadays, is what is supplied by these Genealogical and Personal Memoirs. In other words, while.others have written of the times, the province of this work is as a chronicle of the people who have made this magnificent region what it is. Unique in conception and treatment, this work constitutes one of the most original and permanently valuable contributions ever made to the social history of an American community. In it are arrayed in a lucid and dignified manner all the available facts regarding the ancestry, personal careers and matrimonial alliances of those who, in each succeeding generation, have been accorded leading positions in social, professional and bu.sinless life. It is not based upon, neither does it minister to, aristocratic prejudices and assumptions. On the contrary, its fundamental ideas are thoroughly American and democratic. The work everywhere conveys the lesson that distinction has been gained only by honorable public service, or by usefulness in private station, and that the development and prosperity of the region of which it treats have been dependent upon the character of its citizens, and in the stimulus which they have given to commerce, to industry, to the arts and sciences, to education and religion to all that is comprised in the highest civilization of the present day through a continual progressive doe,.Conditions: Age appropriate wear of covers, owners writings on blank front page, binding is firm, pages are clean. Civilians are seen throughout the album including Sudeten Germans also known as the "Bohemian Germans" who would later become part of Czechoslovakia. There are a few women represented in the photos, one shows two officers entertaining dates, another is a small photo of a nurse in full uniform.         [Photo Album]: A German Officer in The Great War on Both the French and the Russian Fronts

1915 and 1916. Oblong octavo measuring 13" x 9". String-tied album with decorative paper over boards containing 240 gelatin silver photographs, measuring between 2.25" x 1.75" and 4.75" x 3", most with captions in German; additionally there are a dozen or more postcards mixed in. Very good or better album with moderate wear at the edges and the spine with near fine photographs. A Bohemian German officer's album of his experiences in the First World War, beginning in February, 1915 with his training in the city of Pirna, then shifting to the Western Front, showing the devastation in and around Betheniville, Vaudricourt (Somme), and Auberive. In late 1916 he was transferred to the Russian Front in the Baltics, first to Riga, then on to Jelgava (Mitau) in Central Latvia, Tartu (Dorpat) in Estonia, and Liepaja (Libau) in Latvia. Includes striking images of artillery fire at night, devastated cities, photos from the front lines showing scenes of the trenches and no man's land, and images of town and buildings long since destroyed. Many of the photos show the men making the best of their situation with photos of group pouring wine, playing guitar, and playing card games to pass the time. They also spent their days marching through the ruined towns of Europe and performing tasks such as building bridges and trenches. One of these photos shows the building of a bridge across Elbe by German soldiers. Another photo shows them working at a switchboard as part of the early Signal Corps. Civilians are seen throughout the album including Sudeten Germans also known as the "Bohemian Germans" who would later become part of Czechoslovakia. There are a few women represented in the photos, one shows two officers entertaining dates, another is a small photo of a nurse in full uniform. A few small photos towards the end of the album show ships at sea in December 1918.A notable collection of images of the "War to End All Wars" documenting the conflict from both fronts. .

      O. O. u. D. - 1 S. Qu.-8vo.
