AUTOMOTIVE) Gamy (Marguerite Montaut).
Mabileau & Co. Paris. 1913. - Color lithograph with pochoir (stencil) handcolor, image approximately 12 x 20 inches on sheet 17 3/4 x 35 1/2 inches. Couple of tiny edge tears, very good condition. 'Gamy' is thought to be a pseudonym of Marguerite Montaut, the wife of the French poster artist Ernest Montaut, who died in 1909 at the age of 31. Ernest Montaut and, after his death, his wife, produced posters whose subject matter reflects the era's fascination with speed, on land and in the air. The posters were elaborately produced employing a combination of color lithography and handcoloring using the pochoir (stencil) process. This image portrays a racing car being driven at high speed through the countryside.

STOCKLEY, Vesey M.
London: Horace Cox, 1913. Large octavo. Original green crocodile-skin-textured cloth over bevelled boards, titles to spine and front cover gilt, tiger vignette to front cover in black, floral-patterned endpapers. Very short nick to foot of spine, lower outer corners almost imperceptibly bumped, pale foxing either side of inner hinges, contents toned, remains a superb copy. Half-tone photographic frontispiece, 8 similar plates, sketch-maps to the text. First edition, increasingly scarce in commerce. Stockley was an officer in the Indian Army (16th Bengal Lancers) from 1874 to 1912, serving at Tel el Kebir and in the occupation of Cairo during the Anglo-Egyptian War, and later seeing action during the Boxer Rebellion; in the Great War he commanded the Tyneside Irish, then the Second Tyneside Scottish. This attractive book mainly describes his hunting experiences on the subcontinent. He hunted tiger in central India and upper Burma, and here provides interesting notes on stalking strategies. There are also chapters on the pursuit of bear and gaur in Chada, bison near the Irawaddy and between the Indravati and its tributary the Bandia, and further adventures in Tibet and Kashmir. Stockley was eventually killed by a buffalo while hunting in Africa. Czech, Asia, p. 204 and Africa p. 270. [Attributes: First Edition]

WODEHOUSE, P.G.
Methuen, London 1913 - 8vo, pp. 303. 31 pp. advertisements dated Autumn 1913 bound in at rear. Original red boards, blind-stamped to front panel and lettered in gilt to spine. Small contemporary (1916) ownership signature to ffep., small crayoned price (1-/-) to front pastedown, library label to rear pastedown. Spotting throughout. Boards faded and marked, gilt dulled at spine. First edition. In a slightly gushing letter of 9 August 1912 to Arthur Conan Doyle, Wodehouse wrote: 'I am absorbed in The Lost World! I have just finished a novel of my own for an American magazine, but I had to write it quick so I am afraid it is pretty bad.' Others begged to differ. This transitional novel, combining a prep school setting with an American gangster subplot, was first published (minus the love interest present in this book version) in the January-March 1913 issues of The Captain with the title The Eighteen Carat Kid, and then again, complete and in a single instalment, in Munsey's Magazine of August that year. Another fan of the book turned out to be Agatha Christie, but the discovery, in 1955, brought Wodehouse no joy. In a letter to the novelist Denis Mackail of 6 March that year, he wrote: 'I'm seething with fury. Sir Allen Lane of Penguin was over here not long ago and told me that Agatha Christie simply loved my stuff and I must wrote to her and tell her how much I liked hers. So with infinite sweat I wrote her a long gushing letter, and what comes back? About three lines, the sort of thing you write to an unknown fan. 'So glad you have enjoyed my criminal adventures' -- that s … [Click Below for Full Description]

Half-tone photographic frontispiece, 15 similar plates, folding table. Bookplate of Lincoln Ellsworth to front pastedown. Headcaps and tips very lightly rubbed. A superb copy, partly unopened. Stigand (1877-1919) was commissioned into the Royal West Kent Regiment in 1899, serving in Burma and Somaliland before travelling to British East Africa with the King's African Rifles in 1901. In 1919 he was appointed governor of Mongalla, modern-day South Sudan, and was killed on patrol the same year during the Aliab Dinka uprising. He published a number of hunting books, the present title describing his activities in British East Africa, North Eastern Rhodesia, Nyasaland, and Lado, and includes chapters on rhinoceros, buffalo and lion in addition to elephant. Saint Point Valentine de
Direzione Movimento Futusista - Tip. A. Taveggia, 1913. Cammarota, Futurismo, Manifesti, 17. Salaris, Bibliografia, p. 83b. Italiano
