Press of the Methodist Book Concern. Rare hardback copyright 1913; first edition in good-to-very-good condition; fascinating, first-person look at life, war, and rustic poetry in the late 18th to early 20th centuries; the author, after working his way from private to captain on the battlefields of the Southern Front during the Civil War, served as Superintendent of Construction of United States Public Buildings and pursued his passion, publishing "four books and three pamphlets" during the course of his career as a poet in southwestern Ohio; curiously, he was also "Recipient of over two hundred and fifty rare presents within twenty-five years"; text block, with all edges gilt, is tight and square; beige leatherette boards with gilt lettering and design show some soiling (see photo); this unique and evocative volume is a withdrawal from a public library with only two ex-library stamps; 64 clean, glossy pages a bit tanned from age B19-4. Merezhkovskii, Dmitrii
St. Petersburg/Moscow: T-va M. O. Volf' i T-va I. T. Sytina, 1913. Second edition (published a few months after the original first); 6 x 9; vol. I pp. 335, vol. II pp. 343; 1/2 cloth and marbled paper over boards; handwritten paper label to spine; some rubbing to tips of spine and edges of boards; small tipped-in bookplate to first blank page; stamp of "Russisches Archiv in Berlin" to title page; a few spots mainly to margins of first several pages, else clean; overall very good. A scarce copy of what is considered the height of Merezhkovskii's literary career. He was an author, poet, religious critic, co-founder of the Symbolist Movement, and husband of revered poet Zinaida Gippius. Right before returning home from exile in Paris in 1908, Merezhkovskii published his historical drama 'Pavel the First' which was promptly confiscated and banned by the Russian authorities. It would become the first in his "The Kingdom of the Beast" trilogy of which the current "Alexander the First" would be the second and "December the 14th" the third and last one. Throughout his life he would be nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature 9 times, winning none-each time for various reasons including his alleged support of Hitler and his connections to "terrorists" among others. 2. Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst, Konrad Prinz zu, Staatsmann (1863-1918).
Triest, 4. VI, 1913. 3? SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo.

Paris: Grasset, 1913. Fine. Grasset, Paris 1913, 11,5x18,5cm, relié. - PROUST Marcel Du côté de chez Swann [Swann's Way] Grasset, Paris 1913, 115 x 185 mm (4 1/2 x 7 1/4 "), 20th-century half morocco First edition, second issue, on ordinary paper, with the printer's date of 8 November 1913, the typographic error to Grasset on the title page corrected and no index. A fine autograph inscription from Marcel Proust to Count Primoli: "Hommage d'attachement respectueux et bien vif [As token of my lively and respectful feelings]." Joseph Napoléon, Count Primoli (1851-1927), was the great nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte. Closely tied to the imperial family during the Second Empire, he was later a faithful visitor to his beloved aunt, Princess Mathilde's salon, held at her mansion in the rue de Berri. His refined and spiritual conversation were much admired there and - a passionate bibliophile - he also met some of the great writers of the age: Gustave Flaubert, Théophile Gautier, the Goncourt brothers and even Guy de Maupassant. It was also there that he got to know, from the 1890s on, the young Marcel Proust. The two men found a strong mutual sympathy and the Count, who was dedicated to strengthening literary and cultural ties between Rome (his city of birth) and Paris, invited the writer several times to visit the Italian capital. Proust never went, but in his eyes, Primoli's … [Click Below for Full Description]
