Robert Frost
A Boy's Will Robert Frost London: David Nutt, 1913 First edition, second issue, one of 30 copies of binding variant C not rubber-tamped on the title page verso Condition: Good This first edition, second issue of Frost's first published book is the scarcest identified binding variant - one of just 30 thus. First published in England in 1913, the publication history of A Boy's Will is complicated by the fact that the reported 1,000 first edition sheets saw two issues in four variant bindings, owing in part to the bankruptcy of the original publisher (Nutt) and sale of unbound first edition sheets during the subsequent liquidation, followed in turn by still further sales of remaining sheets and later bindings thereof. This copy is Binding C, one of only 100 reported copies bound for Simpkin Marshall, distinguished by cream linen-paper wrappers stamped in the same lettering and decoration as Bindings A & B (with the horizontal bar surmounting the "A" and with two eight-petaled flowers, beneath the lower of which is a single dot from which descend three, leaf-like slashes), but in black without a front cover border rule. Of these 100 Binding C copies, 70 (purchased by Dunster House along with 616 remaining sets of sheets in Binding D) were sent to America and rubber-stamped "Printed in Great Britain" on the title page verso. Just 30 copies were not so stamped, retaining a blank title page verso. This copy is one of these 30. Condition is good. The original wraps binding is square, tight, and complete, albeit with minor wear to extremities, overall soiling, and a toned spine. The … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robert Frost
A Boy's Will Robert Frost London: David Nutt, 1913 First edition, second issue, binding D, one of 135 copies signed by Frost Condition: Good plus This first edition, final binding variant of Frost's first published book is #76 of the final 135 copies signed and numbered by the author in 1943. When the original publisher went out of business, the remaining stock of unbound sheets passed in ownership from Simpkin Marshall and then to Dunster House, ultimately to become the "second issue" in bindings "C" and "D". "In 1943 Herman Cohen of the Chiswick Book Shop, New York, bought the stock of Dunster House when that shop went out of business. In that stock he found 135 copies of A Boy's Will, second issue, binding D." (distinguished by the lack of a bar surmounting the titular front cover "A" and a device featuring two four-petaled flowers above two dots and a thin perpendicular wedge in descending order). "Cohen consulted Captain Louis Henry Cohn of The House of Books, Ltd., New York, whom he knew to be a close personal friend of Robert Frost. Captain Cohn asked Frost to sign and number the 135 copies, and Frost agreed to do so." Frost wrote of the arrangement "It's a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jean Miélot ; Christine de Pisan
Bruxelles: 1913. [Click Below for Full Description]

1913. BOOK IS IN AN EXPANDABLE FRAME OF LEATHER OVER METAL AND THE BOARDS AND LEATHER COATING ARE IN POOR CONDITION. THE BOOK ITSELF, NOTWITHSTANDING SOME WATER STAINS TO LATER AMENDMENTS, IS IN GOOD OR BETTER CONDITION WITH NO LOOSE PAGES, NO TEARS. Includes a stained copy of West Virginia Prohibition Law from 1915 that is independent of the Mida's book. There is so much good and rare about this book that I just want to get the bad news out of the way first. ** The book is bound in an expandable leather covered steel frame. The expansion was done about as far as feasible (last photo). The boards appear to be held on 100% by linen tape on the inside and outside covers. The leather coating to the boards is flaking off like snow and you might be best served just to scrape it off. The title plate on the spine is damaged but present That being said, the book is firmly held together. The original book with indexes is 768 pages, however, there are scores of additional pages, if not hundreds. As the laws were updated, the pages were slid into place in the appropriate location. (For instance, page 118 is actually 50 pages 118 through 118-50). This exists throughout the book. I did note that a small section of later inserts of Oregon were placed in the incorrect location but everything else appears correct. See the last photo for a 1913 description of the book and its "loose leaf extension binding" This book includes the 1913-1916 liquor laws for all of the existing States plus Alaska and the District of Columbia. It does not include Hawaii. As the book clearly became too large and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Beatrix Potter
London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1913. THE TALE OF PIGLING BLAND - Bound by ASPREYby Beatrix PotterCONDITION: Overall in excellent condition. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, and no underlying or highlighted text or writings in the margin. Lovely addition to your wonderful library. See pictures for more details.SHIPPING/HANDLING: Free expedited shipping. Special care will be taken during packing to ensure you receive the books as described. To celebrate Peter's birthday, Frederick Warne is publishing new editions of all 23 of Potter's original tales, which take the very first printings of Potter's works as their guide. The aim of these editions is to be as close as possible to Beatrix Potter's intentions while benefiting from modern printing and design techniques. The colors and details of the watercolors in the volumes are reproduced more accurately than ever before, and it has now been possible to disguise damage that has affected the artwork over the years. Most notably, The Tale of Peter Rabbit restores six of Potter's original illustrations. Four were sacrificed in 1903 to make space for illustrated endpapers, and two have never been used before. Of course, Beatrix Potter created many memorable children's characters, including Benjamin Bunny, Tom Kitten, Jemima Puddle-duck and Jeremy Fisher. But whatever the tale, both children and adults alike can be delighted by the artistry in Potter's illustrations, while they also enjoy a very good read. Because they have always been completely true to a child's experience, Potter's 23 books continue to endure.

BUCK, Charles Neville
W. J. Watt & Co, 1913. First Edition. Hardcover. Octavo, 348pp., illustrated. A very good or better copy, square and crisp, with a tiny pen notation on the front free endpaper (concealed by the jacket flap), some light dust-soiling/foxing to the fore-edge and top edge, and a forgiveable stain on the bottom edge. In the scarce dust jacket, very good, which sits slightly off-center of the book, and has a few gentle nicks, some gentle foxing to the white spine and a half-dollar sized chip at the bottom of the rear panel, near the flap. If you can live with that last irksome detail, this is really a rather nice surviving copy. Very good + / very good. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

Robert Frost
London: David Nutt, 1913. First edition. Wraps. This first edition, second issue of Frost's first published book is the scarcest identified binding variant – one of just 30 thus. This copy is Binding C, one of only 100 reported copies bound for Simpkin Marshall, distinguished by cream linen-paper wrappers stamped in the same lettering and decoration as Bindings A & B (with the horizontal bar surmounting the “A” and with two eight-petaled flowers, beneath the lower of which is a single dot from which descend three, leaf-like slashes), but in black without a front cover border rule. Of these 100 Binding C copies, 70 (purchased by Dunster House along with 616 remaining sets of sheets in Binding D) were sent to America and rubber-stamped “Printed in Great Britain” on the title page verso. Just 30 copies were not so stamped, retaining a blank title page verso. This copy is one of these 30. Condition is good. The original wraps binding is square, tight, and complete, albeit with minor wear to extremities, overall soiling, and a toned spine. The contents are tight and respectably clean with no previous ownership marks, though there is light intermittent spotting … [Click Below for Full Description]

E. L. P. S.]
London, 1913. Absolutely charming original artwork painted on silk squares illustrating plays from the London stage with anthropomorphic penguins as characters. At this time, the Antarctic was foremost in the British mind, as Robert Scott and his companions had perished tragically in March 1912. The artist is listed on the lower left corner as an unknown "E. L. P. S." and dated 1913 on the lower right corner. The four images play on the titles of four plays:- "Our Miss Gibbs"; "Charley's Aunt"; "The Whip" and "The Hope". The most successful commercially seems to have been "Charley's Aunt"; it was first performed in February 1892 and broke the historic record for longest-running play worldwide, running for 1,466 performances. (Wikipedia). A farce whose plot includes impersonating the Aunt and a fortune hunter is illustrated by a stout older female penguin with an elaborate purple hat with green feathers, with her green parasol and book of Hymns. The penguin men are watching her. A smiling red sun is sinking below the horizon. "Our Miss Gibbs" pictures a tall male penguin with a dashing green hat, complete with long red feather, holding the hands of two child penguins, dressed as a girl (holding a penguin doll) and a boy, holding a whip. This does not seem to bear any relation to the plot- a Yorkshire lass working at "Garrods" in London, who is deemed an unsuitable match for the son of an Earl who is slumming it working as a bank clerk. The play debuted in 1909. "The Hope" shows a mother penguin carrying her shopping basket (complete with fish), wearing a straw bonnet and hol … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cumberland & Westmorland Antiquarian & Archaeological Society: Castles and Towers of Cumberland and Westmoreland (Extra Volume Series XIII) Author/Editor. John F Curwen FSA FRIBA Language. English Publisher. Kendal Publishing Date. 1913 Edition. 1st Hard Cover/Soft Cover. Hard Pages. 527 Condition. Book in good condition with expected general wear/discolouring for age - book has been professionally rebacked. All pages clean with light foxing and a few creased corners - rough cut page bloc as is usual. Brown cloth binding with gilt titling and design on front board. Covers lightly rubbed as expected with a little bumping/scuffing to edges/corners. First page has an Ex-Libris name-plate fixed to middle with the name 'William Cecil Slingsbury'. William Cecil Slingsby (1849-1929) was an English mountain climber and alpine explorer. Slingsby is perhaps most famous for being the first on "Storen", or Store Skagastølstind (2405 m) in 1876, the third highest mountain in Norway. Around this fascinating name plate (which features an illustration of a mountain) is an inscription in blue ink which fills the page - it says something like the following (with some caution on exact wording as handwriting very difficult to read): 'Given to Eleanor Hawthorp? Young who knew the author well 1911 - 1924 (about) & was a friend of his twin/two? sons John Spedding & Donald Rigg Curwen from 1911. Robert Frost
London: David Nutt, 1913. First edition. Wraps. This first edition, final binding variant of Frost's first published book is #76 of the final 135 copies signed and numbered by the author in 1943. When the original publisher went out of business, the remaining stock of unbound sheets passed in ownership from Simpkin Marshall and then to Dunster House, ultimately to become the “second issue” in bindings “C” and “D”. “In 1943 Herman Cohen of the Chiswick Book Shop, New York, bought the stock of Dunster House when that shop went out of business. In that stock he found 135 copies of A Boy's Will, second issue, binding D.” (distinguished by the lack of a bar surmounting the titular front cover “A” and a device featuring two four-petaled flowers above two dots and a thin perpendicular wedge in descending order). “Cohen consulted Captain Louis Henry Cohn of The House of Books, Ltd., New York, whom he knew to be a close personal friend of Robert Frost. Captain Cohn asked Frost to sign and number the 135 copies, and Frost agreed to do so.” Frost wrote of the arrangement “It's an irony of time that they should come round to me in the way they have.” (Crane, A2, p.9) … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mr. G. Fawcett and E.W. Hunt
1913. Original wraps. Wonderful album documenting a month-long camping, hunting and fishing trip (started on June 12th, 1913) among several dozen American friends (mostly couples) at "Camp Welcome" in Saw Mill Bay, Prince William Sound, Alaska. Now a popular tourist destination, Saw Mill Bay was clearly very remote at the time (this trip having taken place almost 50 years before Alaska gained statehood) and was chosen by this group for its scenic beauty and seclusion. Dozens of crisp, pasted-in black-and-white photos (most with running captions) capture the group in its various stages of engagement (or non). 2 separate ships ("S.S. Restless" and "Visators Day"), which between them stopped at Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Cordova, Alaska and Valdez, Alaska, delivered the entire group to Camp Welcome by June 12th. We know this because of the "Camp Welcome Visators (sic) Register", a full page listing all of the campers. Preceding this is a full-page menu for June 5th 1913 ("Camp Welcome Grill") and following it is 2 dense, typed pages of fun running commentary by Mr. G. Fawcett and E.W. Hunt. The album is bound in its ribbon-tied, stiff black wrappers and consists of 14 separate pages (all packed with photos and commentary) and a stiff beige re-inforcement at the rear panel. The oblong album (which measures 10 1/4"x7") is clean and crisp and has held up very nicely. This is largely because of the handsome custom-made, oatmeal-cloth box which was designed to house it. The box is tight and Near Fine and even boasts a red-leather title label (with gilt-tooling and letter … [Click Below for Full Description]

1913. Condition: Very Good. The Catholic Encyclopedia: An International Work of Reference on the Constitution, Doctrine, Discipline, and History of the Catholic Church,[1] also referred to as the Old Catholic Encyclopedia and the Original Catholic Encyclopedia,[2] is an English-language encyclopedia published in the United States and designed to serve the Roman Catholic Church. The first volume appeared in March 1907 and the last three volumes appeared in 1912, followed by a master index volume in 1914 and later supplementary volumes. It was designed "to give its readers full and authoritative information on the entire cycle of Catholic interests, action and doctrine".[3][4] The Catholic Encyclopedia was published by the Robert Appleton Company (RAC), a publishing company incorporated at New York in February 1905 for the express purpose of publishing the encyclopedia. The five members of the encyclopedia's Editorial Board also served as the directors of the company. In 1912 the company's name was changed to The Encyclopedia Press. Publication of the encyclopedia's volumes was the sole business conducted by the company during the project's lifetime.[5] Purpose The encyclopedia was designed to serve the Roman Catholic Church, concentrating on information related to the Church and explaining matters from the Catholic point of view. It records the accomplishments of Catholics and others in nearly all intellectual and professional pursuits, including artists, educators, poets and scientists. While more limited in focus than other general encyclopedias, it was far broader in scop … [Click Below for Full Description]
