1913 Ruskin Pottery Factory Catalogue and Separate Price List with Price Revisions in the hand of William Howson Taylor representing the complexity of manufacture of each style and model. Gifted to A A King by William Howson Taylor on the closure of the factory as a token of the personal friendship and technical help given by him to the Ruskin Pottery Works during its working life. The catalogue was acquired in the 1970s along with top quality examples of Sang de Boeuf Pottery from G King which had been passed to him by bequest from A A King. It has been in our personal library ever since. Both A A King and G King were commercial industrial chemists of some repute. According to G King, It was A A King's professional knowledge which aided William Howson Taylor in the design and construction of the Red Kiln and in the formulae and preparation of the Flambe and Sang de Boeuf glazes. The Sang de Boeuf pots was sold to the Country's leading collection of Ruskin Pottery at the time, but the Factory Catalogue retained (Collection subsequently dispersed at Sotheby's). Size: 19.4cm x 13.7cm. All intact and in excellent condition (minor scuffs to top right hand corner of front cover- see photograph) Hardback. 74 Pages in Total. Great Condition for a working factory catalogue of its age and a unique opportunity to acquire a genuine and very rare one off item with a provenance directly back to William Howson Taylor and the Ruskin Pottery. Arthur Quiller-Couch
Hodder & Stoughton, London. A good copy of the 1st trade edition of 'In Powder and Crinoline' with 24 tipped in colour plates and numerous designs by Kay Nielsen. Undated but 1913. This was Kay Nielsen's first published book illustration and his reputation was such that Arthur Quiller-Couch was commissioned to find and rewrite the fairy tales to the title chosen by Nielsen. His illustrations are unique and unforgettable. This copy is in the publisher's quarter cloth binding with grey card boards. The spine has gilt titles and designs and the front board has red titles and grey illustration. The binding is sound but with the usual wear: pulling to the top and bottom of the spine and edge wear to the boards with some browning and marking. The decorative endpapers are present with some light browning and there is some repair to the front endpaper joint. Contents are complete including half title; frontispiece with tissue guard; title page on thick grey paper with red lettering; list of illustrations; preface; and text 164 pp with designs and 23 tipped in colour plates on thick grey paper with decorative guards. Contents are generally clean and the plates are in very good condition. There is sporadic and persistent browning in the gutter of the text pages around the stitching. The tissue guards to plates at pp 28 and 132 and occasional light marking on the grey paper supporting the plates. Please enquire if you would like to see further images. Robert Frost
Anniroc Rare Books ________ A Boy's Will Robert Frost 1913, London First edition, first issue, first binding (of which there were 350 copies or less from the overall edition of 1000), of Frost's first published book. Original bronze pebble grain cloth, lettered in gilt, a few minor spots of sporadic staining and rubbing, corners bumped, but withal a near fine, solid copy - housed in custom folding case. I Vow to Thee, My Country (British song based on a poem by Sir Cecil Spring Rice circa 1921) written on rear end papers in contemporary hand - presumably by a very patriotic, poetry loving Englishman. "The author's first book published in England where the 40 year old poet was living in a Bungalow at Beaconsfield. He had published an earlier work in 1894 called 'Twilight. Five Poems' in an edition of 2 copies one for his future bride, Elinor White, and one for himself. He destroyed his own copy. The remaining copy is at the University of Virginia. Frost is closely linked with the New England region, he attempted to catch 'the abstract vitality of our speech' in his poetry. However his first two collections were published in London - A Boy's Will (1913) and North of Boston (1914). He and his wife and children had moved to England in 1912 after he had been unable to make a living in a variety of occupations (including cobbling) or to find a publisher for his poems in America. Through his friendship with the Imagist poet F. S. Flint he made important contacts in London like Ezra Pound, Edward Thomas, T. E. Hulme and Georgian poets like Lascelles Abercrombie and Wilfrid Gibson - … [Click Below for Full Description]

FROST, Robert.
London: David Nutt, 1913. London: David Nutt,, 1913. Octavo. Original brownish gold patterned cloth, titles gilt to front. Extremities lightly rubbed with a few very small dents, internally sound and fresh but for one minor stain mark to B1 near gutter, a very good copy indeed. First edition, first issue, Binding A, one of only 350 copies thus. This poetry collection was the first published book of Robert Frost. He was then nearing 40 and, although he had written much, had not found a conducive publisher in America. He had moved to London in 1912, hoping to find the scene more receptive to new poetic voices, and, with the support of F. S. Flint and other sympathetic Imagists such as Ezra Pound, managed to secure a deal with David Nutt, who printed 1,000 copies of A Boy's Will. Only about 350 copies were issued by Nutt, who went bankrupt shortly after the war. Frost in the meantime had returned to America at the outbreak of the war, and, bolstered by his London publication and its rave reviews penned by his Imagist friends, achieved the American beginning of his meteoric poetic career with an edition of A Boy's Will published by Henry Holt in 1915. The Nutt edition is however the true first printing, and this copy is one of only 350 of the first issue in the first binding.

George Foucart, Ministère de l'Instruction Publique et des Beaux-Arts. Set published 1913-1915. Max van Berchem completed his doctoral thesis in 1886, that same year he left on his first journey to Egypt where the dilapidated state of many Islamic monuments in Cairo, as well as the discovery of unrecorded Arabic inscriptions were to give his life its definite orientation. Max van Berchem was the first to recognize the value of Arabic inscriptions for a more exact reconstruction of medieval history. He began systematically to explore the old quarters of Cairo looking for inscriptions and photographing mosques, schools, palaces and walls. Acknowledging the immensity of the task, he divided the work between a number of scholars, mostly French and German, but kept the larger cities of the Middle East , Cairo, Jerusalem, Damascus, for himself. To mention a few of his more important travels, he explored Egypt in 1887, 1888, 1889 and 1890; Jerusalem and Palestine in 1888, 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

WEYL, HERMANN.
Leipzig und Berlin, B.G. Teubner, 1913. Orig. green printed wrappers. Frontwrapper nearly loose but without loss. Backstrip faded. Very small nicks to spineends. IX,(1),169,(1) pp. + Publishers catalogue. Textillustrations. Internally clean and fine. ¶ Scarce first edition. As privatdozent Hermann Weyl had given a course on Riemann's theory of functions; but instead of following his predecessors in their constant appeal to intuition for the definition and properties of Riemann surfaces, he set out to give to their theory the same kind of axiomatic and rigorous treatment that Hilbert had given to Euclidean geometry. Using Hilbert's idea of defining neighborhoods by a system of axioms, and influenced by Brouwer's clever application of Poincare's simplicial methods (which had just been published), he gave the first rigorous definition of a complex manifold of dimension 1 and a throughout treatment (without any appeal to intuition) of all the questions regarding orientation, homology, and fundamental groups of these manifolds. "Die Idee der Riemannschen Fläche" (1913) immediately became a classic and inspired all later developments of the theory of differential and complex manifolds.(J.Dieudonne in DSB).
