Quiller-Couch, Sir Arthur and Kay Nielsen (illustrator)
[London, nd Ca.1913]: Hodder & Stoughton. Limited Edition. Folio. Edition De Luxe, number 69 of 500 copies, signed by illustrator Kay Nielsen. In his first trip to England in 1913, he created a sensation at the Dowdswell galleries. Nielsen's illustrations are romantic, sexy, depicting delicate princesses and willowy bad boys lurking in parks or lounging alongside ladies' beds or occasionally straddling warhorses. His art is flat and graphic, lavishly stylized and delicate, with bold silhouettes decorated with filigrees of fine lines. He took inspiration from the traditional art of Persia, India, China. His works bring to mind fashion sketches, the English illustrator Aubrey Beardsley. It was no wonder that he caught Walt Disney's eye and was used in Fantasia for the Night on Bald Mountain and Ave Maria sections. Nielsen stage designed for the Copenhagen Royal Theater, which allowed him to think much like a designer. His designing skills can clearly be seen in The Powder and Crinoline which was later published in America as Twelve Dancing Princesses. The fairy tales in the present volume are "Minon-Minette," "Felicia or the Pot of Pinks," "The Twelve Dancing Princesses," "Rosanie or the Inconstant Prince," "The Man Who Never Laughed," "John and the Ghosts," and "The Czarina's Violet." Bound in publisher's original green pictorial gilt vellum with slight bowing and a bit of fading near foot and bottom edge of rear board, endpapers have typical foxing, original ribbons lacking, all 26 hand mounted plates present and in fine condition (the trade edition had only 24 plates).

Shackleton, Ernest; James Murray and George Marston
Andrew Melrose, London, 1913. Limited edition de luxe, numbered 85 of 280 copies signed on the recto of the limitation leaf by E.H. Shackleton, James Murray and George Marston. Octavo, original blue cloth, gilt titles to the spine and front panel with a mounted color illustration, top edge gilt, 4 mounted color plates after watercolors by C. Day, 34 photo illustrations on 28 plates. In near fine condition with a light rubbing. A very nice example, as most copies have been rebound. Introduced by Sir Ernest Shackleton. "For the first time an unofficial, and therefore more human document, is presented to the public . I would advise anyone who wants to get to the kernel of the life of a Polar explorer to read the book" (Ernest Shackleton). "Very scarce.a fine complement to the two giants of the Antarctic bibliography also emanating from Shackleton's 1907-09 expedition, Aurora Australis and The Heart of the Antarctic, and one of the most sought-after Antarctic titles" (Rosove). Written with a good deal of jocularity, it gives us a feeling for the personal side of Shackleton's Nimrod expedition. Taurus 61; Rosove 236.A1. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Ferber, Edna
Frederick A. Stokes Company, New York, 1913. In original blind-stamped green boards; gilt titles strong to front, faded but still legible to spine. Top front corner banged. Intertwined Stokes monogram to copyright page, published "March, 1913," no later dates or printings mentioned. Tissue-guarded B&W glossy frontispiece and all the rest of the 27 full-page Montgomery Flagg illustrations are firmly in place as called for. (Actually, the plate "Not that you look your age," listed as facing page 218, in fact faces page 216. But as that seems to be the proper place for it, in context, we suspect "218" is simply a typo in the list of Illustrations.) This original color dust jacket was backed to folds and edges, at some point in the past, with sturdy brown paper. While we're not sure we'd recommend this, it has added strength, appears to have prevented further edge wear, and is not visible from the recto. Jacket "good" with a sizable (1-by-2-inch) chip to bottom corner of the rear panel at the spine, and some smaller chips to top of spine. Priced "$1.20 net" to both jacket front flap and jacket spine. Rear flap advertises the author's "Buttered Side Down" (1912) at $1.00 net. The tale of traveling petticoat saleswoman Emma McChesney. Tiny bookseller's stamp of The Old Corner Book Store, Boston, to bottom of blank FFE. (Home of pioneer publishers Ticknor & Fields from 1833-1864, the Old Corner Book Store, on the site of Anne Hutchinson's home at the corner of Washington and School streets, served as Boston's literary hub from 1829 through about 1950.) 296 pp. This first edition u … [Click Below for Full Description]

In addition to writing Sabbath School lessons, Plummer wrote several books on teaching (and Sabbath School teaching in particular) and edited The Sabbath School Worker from 1904 to 1936.
