Alphonse Daudet (source); [André Liabel (director)]
Paris: Société Française des Films et Cinématographes Éclair, 1913. Alphonse Daudet (source); [André Liabel (director)]. Jack. Paris: Société Française des Films et Cinématographes Éclair, 1913. Original release, country of origin poster. Grande affiche (58.8125 x 39.1875 inches; 1495 x 995 mm.). Single sheet, folded with seven horizontal and three vertical folds. Paper lightly tanned but still supple; upper edge somewhat worn with a few small chips and closed tears; both right-side corners creased in the margins; a little bit of fold separation along the vertical edges, with a single interior hold; probably double the necessary horizontal folds, a couple folds sharply creased; a few minor interior creases, not associated with folds; pinholes; a few faint stray marginal fox marks. Very good. From the archive of Nederlands Filmmuseum, Amsterdam, No. ECC 20 (by way of Heritage Auctions), with its rubber stamp on the verso.A pretty cheerful-looking poster for classic a miserablist plot ("a woman torn between physical and maternal love," Encyclopaedia Britanica). André Liabel's first directing credit after appearing in numerous films as an actor. Presumed lost, or at least misplaced (not in any of the conventional online lost film databases with only ephemera is found in Ciné-Ressources). Seemingly one of six recorded poster variants (based on measurements), one matching this (rounded up) in La Cinémathèque de Toulouse. (#10061).

Moran, Thomas
Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway System, Chicago, 1913. Chromolithograph [61 cm x 81 cm] in original wood frame [82 cm x 105 cm] with brass plaque beneath the image on the frame. Plaque reads: 'Grand Canyon of Arizona on the Santa Fe, From Painting by Thomas Moran, N.A." Very good. A few small nicks at the extremities with minor wear to the contemporary frame. Overall bright. This has not been examined out of the frame. Dramatic work showing the Grand Canyon in brilliant color from the South Rim. The original painting was acquired by the Santa Fe Railway, and they hired American Lithographic Company to produce this beautiful view. Gustave Beck of ALC printed this in an edition of 2,500. These were sold and given away, with many destroyed or lost to sloppy handling, poor framing and general misuse. Some were framed to hang in Santa Fe Railway offices, and we believe that this was one of these. Wallace Stegner wrote of Moran: "He was an artist, a good one; and though the galleries may neglect him and historians of art pass him with a polite or condescending paragraph, and though his mountains may be a little overgrand, his canyons overawesome, his skies unnecessarily dramatic, his art is recognizably of this earth and the West."

Claudy, C. H. ( Rockwell, Norman, illustrator)
McBride, Nast and Company, 1913. Second printing. Signed by Orville wright on the title page. Additionally there is also a small Christmas gift card inscribed and signed by Orville Wright and his sister Katherine which is mounted on title page. (Unfortunately, the gift card and title page and frontispiece have glue residue which has bled lightly onto the frontispiece). This was the first book illustrated by Norman Rockwell and has the 8 color plates, as issued. The volume is bumped on the spine ends and corners, has a sun washed spine rendering nearly unreadable the white stamped lettering, and there are several areas of light to mild soiling on the facing panels. The pastedowns and endpapers are moderately age toned and in addition to the aforementioned glue residue problem on the title page, there is a small nick and abrasion to the fore-edge. The book is now protected and housed in a custom half leather clam shell case. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

JOHNSTON, Reginald Fleming.
John Murray, 1913. 8vo. Original red cloth, lettered in black and gilt, top edge gilt; pp. xvi, 403; numerous plates after photographs, one folding plan; expertly rebacked, retaining original spine, here and there a little spotted, nevertheless, a rather good copy. First edition, very rare. An account of the development of Buddhism in China, religious pilgrimages within China and of the religious centres at the holy mountain of Chiu-hua and the holy island of Puto. Sir Reginald Fleming Johnston (1874-1938) was a colonial administrator, fiercely Anti-Christian and a Sinologist, stationed on the coast of China's northern Shandong province. 'Johnston stayed for fourteen years, serving as secretary to the government (1904-6), then senior district officer and magistrate (1906-17), and acting administrator (1917-18). Stewart Lockhart and Johnston became firm friends; both were interested in China as administrators, but also as scholars. Johnston's fine linguistic abilities smoothed his move, and he developed a keen intellectual interest in Chinese social and religious practices in the territory. About these he later wrote Lion and Dragon in Northern China (1910), a sympathetic and enduringly useful portrait. Early plans for development of Weihaiwei withered and it became a relative backwater; an important summer base for the Royal Navy's China station, it became chiefly known as a summer resort. Amicable relations with the newly acquired Chinese subjects were established through the principle of governing them less by the Colonial Office book, and more like traditional Chinese … [Click Below for Full Description]

James, Henry
London: Macmillan & Co., Limited, 1913. First edition of the first volume of Henry James' autobiography. Octavo, original cloth, frontispiece, tissue guard. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper in the year of publication, "To dear Gilliard Lapsley Henry James April 5th 1913." The recipient, Gilliard Lapsley was a young historian with whom James became friends (Leon Edel, Letters p. 28). Bookplate, near fine condition with light rubbing. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed by James. Henry James was the final survivor of a remarkable family, and his memoir, written at the end of a long and tireless career, was prompted initially by the death of his "ideal Elder Brother, " the psychologist and philosopher William James. A Small Boy and Others recounts the novelist's earliest years in Albany and, more importantly, New York City, where he was allowed to wander at will. He evokes the theatrical entertainments he enjoyed, the varied social scene in which the family mixed, and the piecemeal nature of his education. With the first of several extended trips, the "romance" of Europe begins as the small boy becomes acquainted with a British culture already familiar from his precocious reading of the great Victorian novelists. And it is in France, in the Louvre's Galerie d'Apollon, that he undergoes an initiation into the aesthetic power of great art and an intimation of all the "fun" it might bring him. Yet the child also registered, within this privileged and extended family group, signs of dysfunction and failure. James's autobiography has significantly determined t … [Click Below for Full Description]

1913. BOOK IS IN AN EXPANDABLE FRAME OF LEATHER OVER METAL AND THE BOARDS AND LEATHER COATING ARE IN POOR CONDITION. THE BOOK ITSELF, NOTWITHSTANDING SOME WATER STAINS TO LATER AMENDMENTS, IS IN GOOD OR BETTER CONDITION WITH NO LOOSE PAGES, NO TEARS. Includes a stained copy of West Virginia Prohibition Law from 1915 that is independent of the Mida's book. There is so much good and rare about this book that I just want to get the bad news out of the way first. ** The book is bound in an expandable leather covered steel frame. The expansion was done about as far as feasible (last photo). The boards appear to be held on 100% by linen tape on the inside and outside covers. The leather coating to the boards is flaking off like snow and you might be best served just to scrape it off. The title plate on the spine is damaged but present That being said, the book is firmly held together. The original book with indexes is 768 pages, however, there are scores of additional pages, if not hundreds. As the laws were updated, the pages were slid into place in the appropriate location. (For instance, page 118 is actually 50 pages 118 through 118-50). This exists throughout the book. I did note that a small section of later inserts of Oregon were placed in the incorrect location but everything else appears correct. See the last photo for a 1913 description of the book and its "loose leaf extension binding" This book includes the 1913-1916 liquor laws for all of the existing States plus Alaska and the District of Columbia. It does not include Hawaii. As the book clearly became too large and … [Click Below for Full Description]

These [point to] the fine friendship of the Ehrman and Hellman families and makes one believe it is appropriate to request your acceptance for your library for the pleasure of your family and greetings to you for Mrs. Ehrman". He also served as a regent of the University of California, Berkeley whose gift in 1932 of $200,000 to the University established a Professorship in the name of his son Sidney Hellman Ehrman (1905-1930) that brought the distinguished James Westfall Thompson to the University. Ponting and other members of the expedition plus maps. xxvi, 633, [2, ads]; xiv, 534 pp. 2 vols. Large 8vo. Original blue cloth lettered in gilt, t.e.g. Some minor rubbing to covers but a bright copy. First edition. Complete with half-titles, frontispieces, 18 colored plates, many from drawings Wilson, and numerous plates from photographs taken by Herbert G. Ponting and other members of the expedition plus maps. xxvi, 633, [2, ads]; xiv, 534 pp. 2 vols. Large 8vo. This is the official account of one of the best known and tragic expeditions of the heroic age of Antarctic exploration. It was arranged from his journals retrieved from his tent in 1912. By this stage he became the first Englshman to reach the South Pole, beaten by a matter of weeks by the Norwegian Roald Amundsen. That they were beaten to the pole was an enormous disappointment, that weather conditions deteriorated preventing them from finding One Ton Depot proved fatal for the entire party. Scott's immortal last lines were: "We shall stick it out to the end, but we are getting weaker, of course, and the end cannot be far. It seems a pity, but I do not think I can write more ... For God's sake look after our people" Conrad p.188; Renard 1386; Rosove 290.A1; Spence 1056; Taurus 77 [Attributes: First Edition]

DEBUSSY, Claude 1862-1918
1 page (120 x 201 mm), trimmed from a larger sheet. Dated November 17, 1913. In blue ink on light blue paper. In French (with translation). Debussy writes a rather cryptic letter discussing a "Mrs. C" and a "Mr. G": "You were very kind to have me telephone Mrs. C, but she knows nothing about anything! I believe that Mr. G is more a poet than a business man." Slightly worn; creased at folds and slightly overall; very minor foxing; numerical annotation in ink to verso with some showthrough, not affecting text. "One of the most important musicians of his time, [Debussy's] harmonic innovations had a profound influence on generations of composers. He made a decisive move away from Wagnerism in his only complete opera Pelléas et Mélisande, and in his works for piano and for orchestra he created new genres and revealed a range of timbre and colour which indicated a highly original musical aesthetic." François Lesure and Roy Howat in Grove Music Online. Debussy wrote a number of letters to Bertault, most regarding his financial difficulties: "The many references to debts which occur in Debussy's letters from 1910 onwards ... reveal the terrible economic anxieties of his existence. In 1910, pressed by the impresario Henry Russell for repayment of a debt, he is far from being able to procure 5,000 francs. In the same year he asks a Monsieur Bertault for the loan of 6,000 francs ... In 1914 he is glad to accept 4,800 francs from Monsieur Bertault." Lockspeiser: Debussy, Vol. II, p. 105. It is possible that "Mr. G" refers to Robert Godet (1866-1950), a Swiss author and friend of Debuss … [Click Below for Full Description]

Aa. Vv. (Boccioni, Carrà, Russolo, Balla, Severini, Soffici)
Rotterdamsche Kunstkring (Imprimerie de J. De Jong), 1913. Catalogo originale. Ottimo esemplare. [Click Below for Full Description]
