BARBIER, George; MIOMANDRE, Francis de.
London C.W. Beaumont, 1913. First English edition, number 131 from a limited edition of 400; 4to (33.5 x 28 cm); translated by C.W. Beaumont, title, 8pp., vignette, 12 full-page coloured illustrations by Barbier on vellum, printed on rectos only, printer's leaf at end; original pictorial wrappers, edges are slightly worn, repairs to spine, otherwise a good copy. Barbier's wonderful illustrations of the legendary dancer in Scheherazade, Carnaval and l'Après-midi d'un Faune . 'The designs, although somewhat fantastic in treatment, do convey the impression produced by Nijinsky in his famous characters' (Beaumont). 'In his brief time, Nijinsky was the most famous male dancer in the world, a pre-eminence due in part to his extraordinary virtuosity. But it was not his virtuosity alone that made him such a powerful stage presence. As contemporary reports make clear, Nijinsky was a great and unusual actor. The ideal Fokine interpreter, he was able to expand a simple choreographic design into a rich dramatic portrait, using, in keeping with Fokine's dicta, the whole body as an expressive instrument. Nijinsky's influence as a dancer was immediate and huge. That ballet, nearly extinguished artistically in western Europe, was revived in this century is due to him and other great dancers of his generation, such as Anna Pavlova and Karsavina, as well as to Diaghilev. That male ballet, utterly extinguished, was also revived is due to him preeminently. Nijinsky was the first real ballet star of the male sex that Europe had seen since the retirement of Auguste Vestris nearly a century earli … [Click Below for Full Description]

2000g. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Benton, Caroline French [Caroline Frances Burrell]
Boston: Dana Estes & Co, [1913]. First edition. Original publisher's pictorial cloth binding. Square, tight, and bright; a just about Fine copy with slight rippling to the cloth at the foot of the front board. Internally clean and unmarked but for an early ownership signature of L.A. Magoley to front pastedown. Previously released as a series of articles in The Woman's Home Companion, and here first in book form; Benton (pseudonym for Burrell) would release an updated version of this useful club guide in 1915 under the title The Complete Book Club for Women. Widely available in digital format, this text is nonetheless scarce in trade; and OCLC reports 11 institutionally held copies. "The Club Movement was an American women's social movement founded in the mid-19th century to provide women an independent avenue for education and active community service" (Britannica). While many early clubs were auxiliaries of men's groups or were attached to religious organizations, American women increasingly used the organizations to drive more forceful and widespread social change including abolition, suffrage, and employment. Benton's volume, appearing at a pivotal moment between two important wars, while women were in the thick of fighting for equality, was well timed. Already, after all, women like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony were encouraging women to organize within their communities, and to document their methods of pursuing progress. Here, Benton provides a how-to guide for women to accomplish this; and she asserts that the Club movement has "prepared the way for wo … [Click Below for Full Description]

2 Bände. Berlin, Ernst Siegfried Mittler und Sohn, 1913. Ca. 25 x 18,5 cm. XXXXI S., 671 Seiten; (6) S., 648 Seiten. Goldschnitt. Gutes Exemplar in dekorativen Einbänden. Wegen seines Anse … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: Marcel Rivière, 1913. Paris: Marcel Rivière,, 1913. The Acceleration Principle 2 volumes, octavo (214 x 132 mm). Contemporary dark green half calf, spines lettered in gilt, marbled sides and endpapers, speckled edges. Tables and charts within the text. A few pencilled notations towards end of vol. II. Spines sunned and lightly rubbed, contents a little toned as usual but clean; a very good copy. First edition of the author's best-known work, one of the earliest statements of the acceleration principle - "an important concept [which] has been used successfully in explaining investment behaviour as well as cyclical behaviour in a capitalist economy. It will continue to play an important role in macroeconomic models as well as in models of business cycles" (The New Palgrave). "The leitmotif of this book was the acceleration principle of derived demand based on Böhm-Bawerk's theory of roundabout, capitalistic production, according to which changes in the demand for consumer goods bring about accelerated changes in the demand for investment goods. (The 'acceleration principle' was independently rediscovered and so named by J.M. Clark in 1917)" (Blaug, Great Economists before Keynes, p. 1). Batson, p. 90; IESS (1913).

Zdanevich, Ilia. Larionov, Mikhail
St. Petersburg, 1913-1917. The Christmas issue, #12 for 1913. 114-118 pp. 25x17 cm. Original illustrated wrappers. Very good. Some wear, new spine. Extremely rare. The crucial document of the Russian avant-garde. The manifesto, co-written by Ilia Zdanevich who moved to Saint Petersburg in 1911 and Mikhail Larionov who invented rayonism in 1922, was published towards the end of this issue of Argus, a general literary magazine. The article is illustrated with 4 photographs of the authors as well as Natalia Goncharova and Mikhail Le Dantu with the abstract compositions painted over their faces. There are 4 more abstract drawings intended for the willing to put on their faces and bodies, ending with the lengthy decorative drawing for the female bust. ''The innovated life calls for the innovated preaching!'' the authors proclaim in the manifesto which merely explains extravagant behaviour by Goncharova and Larionov, who were walking with the painted faces in 1912 and 1913 on the central streets in Moscow. In the spring of 1914 Ilia Zdanevich gave a lecture called 'The Painting of the Face' in the cabaret 'Stray Dog' in Saint Petersburg. ''It's time for the art to invade life. The painting of the face is just the beginning of the invasion'' says the manifesto. One could argue that in that call the echoes of the leftist ideas of the 1920s on art influencing everyday life appear. The article is also important because it features a photo of Mikhail Le Dantu (1891-1917), who was a very important artist of the 1910s, responsible for the discovery of Niko Pirosmani, and tragically died … [Click Below for Full Description]

EINSTEIN, ALBERT
Zurich: np, 1913. FIRST EDITION. A CRITICAL MOMENT IN THE DISCOVERY OF GENERAL RELATIVITY: AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED TO LUDWIG HOPF FROM 1913 WHERE EINSTEIN'S ABANDONS THE REQUIREMENT OF GENERAL COVARIANCE. Background of the Letter - Einstein's struggles with general covariance: "In developing general relativity, Einstein sought to satisfy many requirements. However we shall see the his efforts were dominated by a single theme, covariance," specifically general covariance, which was "an important concept for Einstein as he tried to generalize a theory of relativity. It meant that the relationships between their components remained the same even when there were arbitrary changes or rotations in the space and time coordinate system." (John D. Norton, "General covariance and the foundations of general relativity: eight decades of dispute"; Walter Isaacson, Einstein: His Life and Universe). By early 1913, Einstein had been struggling with his equations for general relativity for many years and "after many aborted attempts, Einstein eventually derived, at the end of the Zurich Notebook, a field equation that became known as the core of the Entwurf theory. It primarily satisfied the principles rooted in classical physics, namely, the correspondence principle and the conservation principle. Einstein realized that the class of coordinate systems in which the Entwurf equation takes on the same form does not satisfy the generalized principle of relativity in the way he imagined. He therefore abandoned with a heavy heart the realization of general covariance. Nevertheless, he could reas … [Click Below for Full Description]
