La Divine Comtesse: étude d'après Madame de Castiglione

Paris: Goupil (1913). 247pp - Paris: Goupil (1913). 247pp. Montesquiou's lavish hommage to the Comtesse de Castiglione, with whom he maintained a lifelong fascination. Castiglione, the flamboyant Italian courtesan who was mistress to Emperor Napoleon III of France, was the most photographed woman of her age and the subject of much controversy for her role as an agent in several court intrigues. It is reported that she only appeared at night in her declining years, spending her days inside her Place Vendôme apartment, from which all mirrors were banned. A spectacular copy with a two page inscription from the author to Sarah Bernhardt, consisting of an emotional poem regarding their friendship. Montsquiou worshipped Bernardt as a young man and the two had a long, and occasionally fraught relationship. One of 25 special copies on Japon (IV), original wrappers present, bound in a full morocco binding by Durvand, top edge gilt, raised bands, gilt design on cover, watered silk endpapers, slipcased. A beautiful copy. Place #27. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

List of Inscriptions on Tombstones and Monuments in Ceylon,: of historical or local interest, with an obituary of persons uncommemorated.

Colombo printed by H. C. Cottle, Government Printer, 1913 - A comprehensive collection of 1,485 inscriptions from cemeteries in Sri Lanka, together with biographical details of the subjects compiled from extensive research in other sources. The earliest English inscription dates from 1748, but the great majority are from the nineteenth century. The frontispiece is of Sir John D'Oyly's tomb at Kandy. Cemeteries at Colombo, Kalutara, Negombo, Galle, Matara, Tangulla, Hambantota, Jaffna (including a cousin of William Makepeace Thackeray), Mannar, Batticaloa, Trincomalee (including a brother of Jane Austen), Badulla, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Matale, Anuradhapura and other smaller sites are covered, and Lewis added information on a further 461 individuals not recorded in cemeteries, making this an extremely valuable biographical work on the British in Ceylon and more: "Hidden away under its unattractive title is a store-house of information on every aspect of life in early times" (J. R. T., 'Books on Ceylon', The Journal of the Dutch Burgher Union of Ceylon Vol. 34 No. 1 (July 1944), pp. 6-7). Lewis modelled his work on Leopold Ludovici's Lapidarium Zeylanicum (Colombo, 1877). Lewis entered the Ceylon Civil service in 1877 and rose to become a member of the Executive and legislative Councils. A very good copy in the original cloth-backed boards. Front boards a little grubby. Corners worn. Small stamp of National Army Museum on end-papers. A letter from Lewis to Mr Charles Swanzy, who had written correcting some errors in the work, is pasted inside the front cover. Swanzy's ownership inscription is also there. Three typewritten sheets of Errata and Addenda are pasted inside the back cover. First edition Folio, pp.x, 462, frontispiece.

Original watercolour: "List, ah list to the zephyr in the grove.

1913. Original pen, ink, watercolour and wash heightened. 270 x 310 mm. Mounted and framed. A fine, beautifully characteristic piece in excellent condition with a couple of faint spots in the yellow sky. An original watercolour for In Powder and Crinoline, signed and dated "Kay Nielsen [19]13" in the lower left corner. "Nielsen shows in his development a fancy so delicate and an outlook so original that no charge of plagiarism can be brought against him. His colour work is delicate and suggestive rather than forceful. Very lovely in its faint blues and greens with tones of peach is the illustration plate 21 [i.e. this painting] where the high folly, the love birds and the blossom testify to the legacy of Japan." (Keith Nicholson, Kay Nielsen, 1975). Nielsen produced 26 watercolours for In Powder and Crinoline to illustrate seven fairy tales chosen by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch. This watercolour illustrates the story, "Felicia or The Pot of Pinks".

La Céramique dans l’Art Musulman. (TWO VOLUMES).

Morance, Paris 1913 - 100 mounted colour plates, tipped-in colour illustrations, loose as issued in original pictorial cloth folders with ties, printed in grey, brown and yellow, half-title to vol.1 lightly browned, Uncut, vol.1 with additional printed wrapper inside folder, Preface by Gaston Migeon, very slightly browned but a very good set. Limited Edition of 200 copies of which this copy is number 124. Henri Benjamin Jean-Pierre Rivière (1864- 1951), French artist and designer best known for his creation of a form of shadow play at the Chat Noir cabaret, and for his postimpressionist illustrations of Breton landscapes and the Eiffel Tower. Henri Rivière is remembered as one of the foremost proponents of Japonisme, the French fascination with all things Japanese at the close of the 19th century. Inspired by the possibilities of lithography to render rich, atmospheric images in full colour, he enlisted Eugène Verneau in 1897 to assist him in producing the most ambitious project in colour printmaking Europe had seen to date. Through this collaboration with Verneau, Rivière was able to translate his panoramic Japonist landscapes of Paris and Brittany into over sixty monumental colour lithographs involving the execution and registration of dozens of limestone (often larger than 30 x 40 inches.) This work is a monumental achievement by Rivière on the Islamic ceramics. Creswell 736. [31320] Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
