Archive. Log and photograph album of D. A. McKell aboard the U.S.S. Maryland 1911-1913

n.p.: n.p., 1913. Log Book & Photograph Album. Good +. Archive of D. A. McKell consists of a Log Book kept on board the U.S.S. Maryland from June 25th, 1911 to August 30th, 1913 and a large photograph album from the same period. The log book measures 8.5" x 7.25" and has maroon leather spine and corners with cloth covered boards. There is a one-inch chip to the upper spine. The foredge has a dark stain not affecting the interior pages. The log consists of 301 lined pages of which 300 were used for daily entries. Pasted down inside the front cover are 3 souvenir illustrations of hotels in Hawaii: Hotel Demosthenes, Holo Hotel, and Kilauea Volcano House. A few loose ephemera items laid inside front cover. In the back of the log book are 2 loose log entries written on 6.5" x 5" note paper for August 29 and 30, 1913 the last dates covered in the diary. The 10" x 8" photograph album is made of soft brown leather and has an embossed "Dragon" design. The soft leather is scuffed, rubbed and edge chipped. The album consists of 188 photographs and photograph post cards. Laid inside the photograph album is a boxing advertisement with the heading "Entertainment and Boxing Exhibition Given by the crew of the U.S.S. Maryland Santa Elena, Ecuador, February 10th, 1912." Photographs are in very good condition. U.S.S. Maryland (Later, U.S.S. Frederick) The second Maryland (Armored Cruiser No. 8) was laid down by the Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co., Newport News, Va., on 7 October 1901; launched on 12 September 1903; sponsored by Miss Jennie Scott Waters; and commissioned on 18 April 1905, Capt. R. R. Ingersoll in command. In October 1905, following shakedown, Maryland joined the Atlantic Fleet for operations along the east coast and in the Caribbean, where she took part in the 1906 winter maneuvers off Cuba. The next summer she conducted a training cruise for Massachusetts Naval Militiamen, and then readied for transfer to the Pacific. Departing Newport on 8 September 1906, she sailed, via San Francisco and Hawaii, for the Asiatic station where she remained until October 1907. She then returned to San Francisco and for the next decade she cruised throughout the Pacific, participating in survey missions to Alaska (1912 and 1913); carrying Secretary of State Knox to Tokyo for the funeral of Emperor Meiji Tenno (September 1912); steaming off the Central American coast to aid, if necessary, Americans endangered by political turmoil in Mexico and Nicaragua (1913, 1914, and 1916); and making numerous training cruises to Hawaii and the South Central Pacific. D. A. MCKELL LOG ENTRIES McKell's log/diary entries began June 25th, 1911 when the U.S.S. Maryland departs San Diego for San Francisco. The ship went through the "golden gate" at 7:00 am on June 30th and arrived at the Navy Yard in San Francisco at 6:30 p.m. From July 1 to October 28 McKell usual log entry is "In the Navy Yard". He spent most of his time painting and working on the ship while stationed in the Navy Yard. July 22 he writes "Hager fell over board and drowned sent two divers down never found him." The ship goes out to sea on October 29 for short excursions and November 11, 1911 the Maryland sets course for Honolulu. November 28 the crew arrived in Honolulu and stayed until early January 1912 before departing for Ecuador arriving February 1. February through March 1912 the ship patrolled the South American coast passing through Salvador, Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Guatemala. In the summer of 1912 the U.S.S. Maryland sailed from California up the Pacific Coast stopping and passing by to Portland Oregon, Astoria Oregon, Puget Sound, Tacoma, Washington and Bremerton, Washington. In July the ship departed Bremerton Washington for Sand Point Alaska and Prince William Sound, Naked Island returning to Bremerton, Washington in August. Admiral Reynolds arrived on board August 21 and the crew "fired 13 guns for him." Soon the ship was anchored in Seattle preparing for a trip to Yokahar, Japan arriving September 10, 1912 and departing September 23 to Honolulu. In the fall of 1912 U.S.S. Maryland traveled to Acapulco Mexico, off the coast of Honduras, and docking in Nicaragua November 1912. McKell records several details. Most often he mentions doing the laundry but also writes about working on the ship, Captain's inspections, visitations, boxing matches, football games, swimming, volcano excursion, weather, holiday activities, etc. Once he writes being reported for "neglect of duty" and the ensuing consequences. Places mentioned in the log include Coronado Islands, Mare Island, San Padre, Santa Barbara, Santa Monica, California City, Venice, South American ports, Alaska and more. The sinking of the Titanic was noted in McKell's diary on April 19. An interesting entry for April 23.."torpedos shot at ship (U.S.S. Maryland) putting two holes in the Starboard". Also recorded in the log was the taking the typhoid fever vaccination. Facing the possibility of court martial McKell took the vaccination while other crew members did not. During late fall 1912, The U.S. S. Maryland traveled from San Juan to Nicaragua returning to San Diego in November. Mckell writes about doing laundry and keeping up with his books. December of 1912 McKell is off Coronado Bay practicing at the firing range. Over the holidays McKell was in the Mare Island Navy Yard. One entry for January 22, 1913 - "Bennett got drowned. He jumped from the Steamer for the float but missed and never came up." The Maryland departed Mare Island mid-March 1913 for San Diego Bay and in April it was docked off Coronado Island. The ship sailed the Pacific Coast later in the spring and early summer up the coast to Bremerton, Washington. Late June 1912 the crew reached Alaska. On page 250 (after the May 13th entry) are 2 medical prescriptions for "Gonarhea or Clapp." On page 251 are 3 prescriptions for "Chanere or Chaneriaids(sp.?). In August of 1913 the ship was docked at Mare Island, San Francisco and San Pedro. The last entry recorded was August 29th, 1913. PHOTOGRAPH POSTCARD ALBUM Photographs includes 188 views of the U.S.S. Maryland, crew, 6 President Taft parade pictures, Cavalry photographs, South American locations, photograph post card titled "Welcoming our Fleet Manilla" with a written note below "Taft was aboard", football pictures, boxing photos; the ship's dog and monkey mascots; battleships views at sea; target practices, etc. Also included are views in California, Honolulu, Kobe Japan, Manilla, Puget Sound, etc. The first photograph is that of a boxing match with the caption "Ben 1910 - Florida" (dated before McKell commenced his log). Several of photographs are named and several have short descriptions. SUMMARY The U.S.S. Maryland crew witnessed the first naval plane landing on on a ship, the U.S.S. Pennsylvania in January 1911 (prior to log entries). To protect American interests in South America President Taft ordered the Maryland to South America in the spring of 1912. Several entries from McKell's log are from this period. On April 23, 1912 The U.S.S. Maryland took part in a risky, ill-advised training exercise. It was used a live target for the submarine "Grampus" off San Padre. The resulting torpedo blast recorded in McKell's entry caused damage to the ship and also risked the lives of its crew members. During September 1912 the U.S.S. Maryland escorted the Secretary of State Know to Tokyo to attend the funeral of Emperor Meiji Tenno (September 1912).

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Edition on current paper despite a second edition statement. Precious autograph signed by Guillaume Apollinaire: "At Lucien Rolmer, the cantor, the psychologist, his friend."         Das Verwaltungsgebäude des Norddeutschen Lloyd in Bremen: erbaut in den Jahren 1901-1910

      H. M. Hauschild, Bremen 1913 - Folio (13 1/2 x 9 3/4"). 48pp (Text), [6] leaves (Plates). Original stiff wrappers, with white lettering to front cover. Frontispiece. Title and text pages within decorative frame. Decorative initials.Illustrated throughout with 17 full-page photographic plates reproduced in photogravure, 25 in-text b/w photographic reproductions, and 6 full-page plates at rear (one architectural drawing, and five floor plans), this work is a detailed architectural monograph on the construction of the Norddeutscher Lloyd Headquarters in Bremen.Built between 1901 and 1910 by Johann Georg Poppe (1837-1915), a prominent architect in Bremen during the German Gründerzeit and an influential interior designer of ocean liners for Norddeutscher Lloyd, the 'Norddeutscher Lloyd Headquarters' occupied almost an entire quarter of the city after its completion. With the cornerstone of the final phase being laid in 1907 to celebrate the company's fiftieth anniversary, the Renaissance revival building was the largest in the city, with large gables and a bottle-shaped tower 75 metres tall. Covered in sandstone reliefs inside and out, it resembled a castle. The project coincided with an economic downturn and its costs caused problems for the company, but the building was finished on time. It was severely damaged in an air raid in October 1944; after the war the company was restarted in the cellar. The tower and gables were removed in 1953 and for a while a bierkeller operated in the cellar. In 1968 it was sold to Horten AG, who demolished it the next year to build a department store.Wrappers slightly discolored along spine and at upper margin of back cover. Minor foxing to the first and last couple of leaves. Text in German. Wrappers in overall good+ to very good, interior in very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Rubbing and a few small marginal chips to wrappers, spine chipped, small separations at hinges. Light tanning, otherwise internally clean. A very good copy. "A full history of those unparalleled killers, related by their defense lawyer, who must have known the facts" - Adams. The Bender family immigrated to Kansas in 1870 with a small group of spiritualists, and opened a general store and guest house for travellers going farther west, but soon developed a penchant for murdering their guests. After they fled in 1873, when a relative of one of their victims came inquiring about his missing brother, ten bodies and a number of body parts were found buried on their property. In 1889, another relative of one of the victims tracked down two women living in Michigan whom she accused of admitting to be the female members of the Bender family. They were arrested and returned to Kansas for trial, but their identities could not be proven. A rare first- hand account of one of the first sensationalized stories of mass murder. Not in McDade.         Men of Mark

1913. First Edition . COBURN, Alvin Langdon. Men of Mark. London; New York: Duckworth & Co.; Mitchell Kennerley, 1913. Quarto, original linen spine with tan cloth boards. $2900.First edition, with 33 tipped-in photogravure portraits of famous men, including Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain, Henri Matisse, W.B. Yeats, Henry James and many others.Coburn was an important member of Alfred Stieglitz's Photo-Secessionist group. In addition to his photographs of city scenes, Coburn is best known for his portraits of famous men, as in this work, Men of Mark, and the follow-up work, More Men of Mark (1922). The images featured here were all produced from hand-pulled photogravures after Coburn's photographs and under his supervision. Coburn writes in his introductory essay, ""A portrait by photography needs more elaboration between the sitter and the artist than a painted portraitÂ… To make satisfactory photographs of persons it is necessary for me to like them, to admire them, or at least to be interested in themÂ… The camera is all recording and very sensitive to the slightest gradation of expression of the personality before it; also the impression that I make on my sitter is as important as the effect he has on me"" (page 21).         Méditations esthétiques. Les Peintres cubistes

Edition on current paper despite a second edition statement.Precious autograph signed by Guillaume Apollinaire: "At Lucien Rolmer, the cantor, the psychologist, his friend."Illustrated book of 46 portraits and art reproductions Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Francis Picabia, Marcel Duchamp ...At the beginning of the century, cubism advocates boil down to a handful of criticism Apollinaire is one of the main representatives.Apollinaire and multiplies positions through his columns and prefaces including the catalog of the exhibition of the Circle of modern art in Le Havre, entitled The Three Virtues plastic, it gets in the introduction aesthetic Meditations.Unbeknownst poet, publisher Eugene Figuière highlights the subtitle "cubist painters." This timely change will determine the acceptance of the work. So instead of a simple "meditation", the text acquires, for readers, the status of true manifesto of Cubism and raises as such sometimes violent reactions (even more from the avant-garde circles as opponents natural to modern painting). But it becomes, at the same time, one of the first writings of importance on cubism, "defining the specific characteristics of the new art movement: the" climate "spiritual, ambitions, its historical necessity" and its international reach. Since its release, the book is commented favorably in Germany, Sweden, Italy, reflected in part in Russian and English, with Picabia, broadcast across the Atlantic Brentano's. A month later, Apollinaire was published Alcohols, frontispiece with a cubist portrait of the author by Picasso.Great friend of Apollinaire, the poet Lucien Rolmer, a month his eldest, did not follow the same route as its bohemian aesthetic companion. On the classic expression, Rolmer is probably less sensitive than the future poet of alcohol and Calligrammes to new artistic forms that defends Apollinaire. However the two poets share a common aesthetic ambition, looking for a new creative breath. In the name of this quest for what he calls "Grace" that Rolmer founded a literary school and a magazine, "Flora, Journal of Grace in the Letters and Art".Apollinaire, meanwhile, seeking a more radical expression that is particularly Cubism and primitive art. Thus he addresses the "champion" of Through these aesthetic Meditations on works including "plastic virtues: purity, unity and maintain the truth under their feet nature floored. ". In doing so, he implicitly questions the "psychologist" this new term "is not an imitative art, but an art design that tends to rise to the creation." The previous year already, he initiated his friend to the Negro Art by inviting him to feed his "graceful art" of the contemplation of a large metal statue Dahomey representing the god of war, "the art object most unexpected and the most gracious there to Paris. "Strange omen of their common tragic fate, since this is the War, they knew yet describe the absurd beauty, who likewise took the two poets. In May 1916, rejecting his surrender, Lucien Rolmer, simple soldier, was executed with a bullet to the head. Two months before, Lieutenant Kostrowitzky was hit by shrapnel in the skull to which the "poet murdered" survived only a short time.Precious and moving dedication of a poet to another, in the heart of artistic and intellectual ferment of the Roaring Twenties.         Gennem Wahhabiternes Land paa Kamelryg. Beretning om den af det Kongelige Danske Geografiske Selskab planlagte og bekosterde forskningsrejse i Ost- og Centralarabien 1912.

Copenhagen, Gyldendalske boghandel, Nordisk forlag, 1913. - (4), 304 pp. With a frontispiece showing the author in Arab garb, 88 illustrations in text, most of them reproductions of drawings and photographs by the author, and a folding map loosely inserted in a pocket at the end.Publisher's green cloth. 8vo. First and only edition, in the original Danish, of an account of a journey through the Arabian peninsula. Sponsored by the Royal Danish Geographical Society, Barclay Raunkiaer (1889-1915) set out to penetrate the hitherto unexplored deserts of south-east Arabia. Although the traveler came equipped with a modest amount of scientific instruments and a camera, the use of these became almost impossible. The foreigner was looked on with suspicion by the Arabs and Raunkiaer could only use his camera, with great risk, at certain unwatched moments (p. 12). At the beginning of 1912, the traveler reached Kuwait, where he stayed at the palace of Sheikh Mubarak. Since it was Mubarak's policy to keep Kuwait free of foreign interference, it took some active lobbying of the British envoy to convince the Kuwaitis that Runkiaer was a harmless traveller. After that, it seems that the Dane enjoyed a certain amount of freedom, as numerous photographs, including one of pearl-fishers and a portrait of Sheikh Mohammed, testify. Raunkiaer was very impressed by the volume of trade in Kuwait, which he considered to be the most important trading town on the east coast of Arabia. - In Kuwait, Raunkiaer became seriously ill, but his tuberculosis was undiagnosed. After a period of rest, he travelled further to Riyadh. As the first western traveller in the city in half a century, Raunkiaer was graciously received by Ibn Saud. After a short stay in Riyadh, Raunkiaer followed a caravan which mostly consisted of 150 pearl-fishers bound for Bahrain. During a stay in Hofuf, where the book ends, Raunkiaer's health became worse and he sailed to Bahrain to recuperate. From there he travelled back to Copenhagen via Bombay. After a few years working for the East Asiatic Company, Raunkiaer died from tuberculosis. - Shortly after the appearance of the Danish edition, the book was translated into German. T. E Lawrence, who considered it to be one of the "readable Arabian books", helped facilitate an English translation in 1916, which was privately printed by the Arab bureau in Cairo. - Inscribed by the author to the Danish historian of religion Ditlef Nielsen (1874-1949), with and a few annotations in pencil in the final chapter. Binding slightly worn along the edges, with a small stain on the title. Endpapers foxed with the text browned; some small random pen marks at the lower margin of p. 47. The map with a few tears along the folds, most of them expertly repaired; a very good copy. Facey, Kuwait by the first photographers, pp. 50-51; "Mr. Raunkiaer's expedition in east-central Arabia", The geographical journal XL (1912), pp. 331-332; "Danish expedition to Arabia", The geographical journal XLIV (1914), pp. 85-86; not in Howgego.         Das Verwaltungsgebäude des Norddeutschen Lloyd in Bremen: erbaut in den Jahren 1901-1910

Bremen: H. M. Hauschild, 1913. First edition. Softcover. vg. Folio (13 1/2 x 9 3/4").

        A History of Chess

Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1913 900 pages with frontispiece, illustrations, plates, tables, diagrams and index. Small quarto (10 1/2" x6 3/4") issued in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and front cover blind stamped with pictorial chess piece. (Betts: 5-6). 1st edition. The author's aim: "to present as complete a record as possible of the varieties of chess which exist, or have existed, in different parts of the world; to investigate the ultimate origin of these games and the circumstances of the invention of chess; and to trace the development of the modern European game from the first appearance of its ancestor, the Indian Chaturanga". The result is a comprehensive history, based on original sources, from the earliest game to the 19th century. Earlier histories had relied chiefly on the written documents, but here considerable weight is also attached to the philological evidence (i.e. the significance of chess terms in the various languages). Since 1913, Murray's history has been recognized as the standard work of its kind. Condition: Light rubbing to extremities and hinges, inner gutter cracked at title, corners bumped, some sunning to spine else a very good copy issued without jacket. . First Edition. Original Cloth.         Daphnis & Chloe

1913. Signed. RAVEL, Maurice. Daphnis & Chloé. Ballet en un Acte. Fragments Symphoniques 2e Série. Lever du Jour-Pantomime-Danse Générale. Paris: Durand, (1913). Folio, original printed paper boards. $3500.Association copy of the full score of one of the two orchestral versions of Ravel’s ballet, often considered his greatest work, inscribed by noted conductor Charles Munch on the front pastedown: “En Souvenir a mon premiere concert a Denver. le 7 Nov. 48. Charles Munch.”Charles Munch (1891-1968), who has inscribed this copy, was one of the greatest conductors of his generation and a friend and colleague of Ravel. He is perhaps best known for his work on French composers, particularly Ravel: he in fact recorded Daphnis & Chloé twice, both times with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, which he led from 1948 to 1962. (Those recordings are today still considered the standard against which all subsequent ones are measured.) He has inscribed this copy to conductor Antonia Brico, perhaps the most celebrated female conductor of the twentieth century. A native of the Netherlands, Brico grew up in the United States and studied conducting both here and abroad. Her talent was immediately recognized; while still in her twenties, she became a popular conductor, working with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Los Angeles and San Francisco Symphonies, and the New York Philharmonic, among others, routinely being the first woman conductor an orchestra worked with. After working in New York throughout the thirties, she settled in Denver in 1940, where she became conductor of the Denver Community Orchestra. In 1974, Judy Collins, Brico’s most famous student, made a widely seen documentary on Brico (Antonia: Portrait of a Woman) that produced many new invitations to conduct, at places such as Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center. In this copy Brico has written a list of conductors, orchestras, times and places, presumably times she heard Daphnis & Chloé performed. All of the performances are in New York up to 1938; the last two listed are Ormandy with Philadelphia in Denver in 1946 and Munch with the National Orchestra de France in Denver on November 7, 1948, the date of the inscription.Front hinge starting, but interior otherwise fine. Light edgewear to original boards, a bit of discoloration to rear board. A near-fine copy with a wonderful provenance.
