        In Powder and Crinoline.

London: Hodder and Stoughton, n.d. [c.1913].. FIRST EDITION. Quarto, pp.[2]; 164. With 24 mounted colour plates, including a frontispiece, each with a captioned tissue guard. In publisher's quarter grey cloth with gilt titles to spine and red titles to grey decorated paper-covered boards. Top edge gilt; illustrated endpapers. Some light spotting and light outer wear; very good indeed. A novel collection of Fairy Tales proposed by the illustrator Kay Nielson, who wanted to illustrate fanciful tales from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but found little obvious material from the latter period. The novelist and critic Quiller-Couch was therefore recruited to assemble this interesting mix of stories, drawn from several different traditions. Inevitably, powdered wigs and beauty spots abound in the illustrations for titles including 'Minon-Minette', 'The Man Who Never Laughed', and 'The Czarina's Violet'.

La Voiture Dedalia classée première du grand Prix de l'ACF 1913 des Cycle Cars]

Mabileau & Co, Paris 1913 - Hand-coloured pochoir print. Very good condition apart from a 3/4" tear in the lower margin. Proof copy. Dedalin, 1913. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of motorized transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Airplanes. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut ( 1879-1909) produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite M. Montaut, Ernest's wife, continued his work after his death producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she usually used "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring.         The Story of a Mother-Love

Jefferson, Ohio: Annette Fitch-Brewer, 1913. This is truly a remarkable story. Even had the story taken place in contemporary times, this would have been a story reported in major newspapers and carried in extreme detail by the major networks and cable outlets. But this story of parental abduction took place nearly a century ago, in 1906. Mrs. Fitch-Brewer fled with her son in late 1905/early 1906 and was on the run in Canada and the United States for four years. The boy's father utilized the services of the Pinkerton Detective Agency, which at the time pretty much operated as a department of the federal government. The corners have some wear, while there is minor wear to the extremities of the covers and the spine. The binding is a little loose. Please refer to pictures provided. This is TRULY a remarkable book detailing a REMARKABLE story of misplaced parental emotions. This book has 289 pages and is illustrated from photographs. This, indeed, is a VERY GOOD copy of this VERY RARE title. Green Cloth with gold gilded lettering. Has pencil writing on inside of cover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. If you have any questions or would like additional pictures please just let me know. Thank you.

Panurge.; Haulte farce musicale en 3 actes de MM. Georges Spitzmüller et Maurice Boukay. [Music by Massenet].

[Paris]: [Printed by J. Minot], [1913]. Original lithographic poster by Charles-Lucien Léandre (1862-1934), signed and dated 1913 in the stone. 89 x 61.5 cms. (35.5" x 25"). Laid down to board. Minor wear to edges; some light staining to upper edge and right corner. "Panurge, which should have been a popular farce in the lineage of Cendrillon and Don Quichotte, never achieved any success despite the usual masterly timing which Massenet deploys. The adventures and misunderstandings of Panurge and his wife Colombe make excellent operatic comedy. But perhaps the grossièreté of Rabelais is more literary than theatrical. In truth this final endearing comedy, which had to compete for attention with such novelties as Le sacre du printemps when it was first performed, has never been put to a fair test on the stage." Hugh Macdonald et al in Grove online A striking image of the rogue Panurge, sung by Vanni Marcoux, created for the premiere of the opera at the Théâtre de la Gaîté on April 25, 1913. "The artist Léandre (1862-1934), born in Normandy, began his career in Paris painting decorative pictures for hotels, then studied at the Beaux-Arts with Cabanel... [He] was known for his caricatures, many of which he drew for the periodical Le Rire. A street in Montmartre bears his name and a statue of him was erected in Paris after his death."         Alcools. Poèmes 1898-1913

First edition, a first impression copy numbered in the press, of which there were only 23 large paper copies on Hollande.Flexible burnished black Bradel paper binding with floral motifs by P. Goy & Vilaine, purple morocco titlepiece, gilt date at foot of spine, endpapers and pastedowns of paper with floral and silver motifs, covers preserved. A rare autograph inscription by Guillaume Apollinaire : "A Edouard Gazanion, son ami, Guillaume Apollinaire [to Edouard Gazanion, his friend Guillaume Apollinaire]".This copy also has seven pen and ink corrections by Apollinaire himself.Edouard Gazanion, for his part, also inserted numerous punctuation marks in pencil and a textual correction matching the pre-published versions of some poems, which had previously appeared in the literary journal Phalange. A poet from the Bohemian Montmartre scene at the turn of the century, a pillar of the Lapin Agile, a regular at the Bouscarat on the place du Tertre and the Bateau Lavoir, Gazanion was by turns friendly or close to the poets, writers and painters of the Butte at the beginning of their careers, including Max Jacob, Mac Orlan, Dorgelès, Gaston Couté, Salmon, Picasso, Warnod, Marcoussis and Carco who liked his Chansons pour celle qui n'est pas venue [Songs for the Girl who did not Come] (Vers et Prose, 1910) and who often crashed at his when he was broke. His meeting with Apollinaire goes back to the Soleil d'Or, when the latter was reading his Nuit Rhénane for the first time - in 1903. Both poets, they kept in touch from then on. Gazanion stood out for his defense of Mamelles de Tirésias during the memorable scandal when it was staged. With a frontispiece portrait of Apollinaire by Picasso.A tiny angular lack to foot of first endpaper, bearing the inscription.A good copy in an elegant signed binding, with a rare autograph inscription by Apollinaire.   Mercure de France Paris 1913 11,5x18,5cm relié sous étui

The Interpretation of Dreams - the true first UK edition

George Allen and Unwin, 1913 Freud, Sigmund. THE INTERPRETATION OF DREAMS. London: George Allen, 1913. First English edition. First published in German as 'Die Traumdeutung' in 1899 (but dated 1900), this first English language edition is an "Authorised Translation Of [the] Third Edition with Introduction by A.A. Brill, Ph.B., M.D." The majority of the first edition sheets were bound with a Macmillan cancel title page for issue in America; ours is the original and much scarcer first state with the integral George Allen London-issue title page. Large, heavy octavo, original blue cloth lettered gilt to spine and upper board. Spine a little tanned, with short tears to the head and tail, a bump which has just broken through the cloth near the foot of the spine, and a neatly repaired tear to the bottom inch or so of the right edge; there is rubbing to the edges and extremities and a few marks to the cloth; page edges darkened; previous owner's tiny pencil signature to the top of the ffep; foxed to the first eight or so pages, as, apparently, are most copies. Still present is the publisher's tipped-in label which directs that the sale of the book is "limited to Members of the Medical, Scholastic, Legal, and Clerical professions." A keystone of psychoanalytic theory. Very good. Scarce.[removed][removed]

First edition, with the date on the title-page, which appears in the first two printings (October and November 1913) which are believed to be identical (Linder. A History of the Writings of Beatrix Potter). The glassine dustwrapper is correct for the book, being a later impression priced "1/3 Net" to the spine (as opposed to 1/- for the first impression). It lists this title on the rear panel together with The Tale of Mr. Tod (published the previous year, 1912) as books in the "New Style" (Series II), and beneath that twelve titles in Series I, all first published in, or before, 1913 concluding with The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes (1911). The inner flap refers to The Roly-Poly Pudding (1908); Ginger and Pickles (1909); The Pie and the Patty-Pan (1905); The Story of A Fierce Bad Rabbit (1913 in book form) and The Story of Miss Moppet (1913 in book form). The lower flap advertises Peter Rabbit's Painting Book (1911); Peter Rabbit's Bookshelf and Peter Rabbit's Slippers.
