Indian Album compiled by W. E. Condon. Photos and Exhibition Catalogs. [our title]

n.p., 1913. Hardcover. Poor. 10 high quality large commercial photos and a couple of smaller ones. Various dates but generally 1913-1936. Photos pasted down and general approximately 29 x 22cm. Three exhibitions catalogs and various newspaper clippings, awards, etc. relating to the exhibition of Condon's watercolor paintings or amateur theatricals in which he or his wife performed. This is quite interesting but also incomplete with only the worn front cover and 12 detached album leaves present. Photos, catalogs and other paper items generally sound and reasonably clean. Condon, a career British soldier serving here in India, is identified variously as Lieutenant or Captain. He appears to have also been a talented painter specializing in water color views of the Himalayas and other Indian subjects. He and his wife also appear to have acted and sung in various amateur productions. He has titled this album: "Photographs, Programmes, Cuttings & Curiosities" which reflects its odd organization and catch-all quality. Nonetheless, what is here is oddly interesting: (1) the 10 photos include 2 group shots taken at the Newar Chapelle Celebrations 1926, an unidentified photo, two group photos taken at the wedding of Capt. J. Dick Lander and Phyllis Iggalden in Lucknow in 1913, 3 large photos of the exterior of a large house identified as "Judge's House" Bareilly 1914, a photo of an English couple and 21 Indians captioned on the page as "Servants Bareilly 1914 (perhaps at the judge's house), a group photo of an unidentified British colonial wedding party, and a photo identified as " The Competing Team of the Navy Army and R.A.F in the Interservices Lawn Tennis Championship 1925; (2) Page identified as Original Register of Duck[s] Shot at Ekope Jheel Manipur 1913, identifying the number -- their three day total was 403 -- of ducks shot by each of the five hunters by day and type, including one Eastern whiteye and 1 Baikal, and a small mounted photo of 4 of the hunters; (3) three fine arts exhibition catalogs (Mussoorie for 1913 and 1914 and Naini Tal for 1913; (4) a few newspaper clippings, prize and commendation certificates, and a letter providing an accounting for the sale of six of Condon's pictures in Mussoorie in 1914.

        Love Poems and Others.

London: Duckworth and Co.,, 1913. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine and front board gilt, top edge gilt. Very slight rubbing to ends and corners, sound, smart and internally fresh, a really excellent copy. First edition, first impression, of Lawrence's first book of verse, his third overall. This copy has a compelling provenance, with the bookseller's ticket, to the rear endpapers, of the Sunwise Turn Bookshop, a key location at the heart of the New York avant-garde. Founded by Mary Mowbray-Clarke and Madge Jenison in 1916, it sold books, art, textiles, and sculpture, published small editions, and hosted readings and other literary events until its closure in 1927. Jenison published an account of the shop at the height of its success, Sunwise Turn: A Human Comedy of Bookselling (New York: E. P. Dutton & Company, 1923). A contemporary observer said, "They did everything: James Joyce, Peruvian fabrics, color-influenced studies, Gurdjieff, handwriting analysis". Harold Loeb and his wife, Marjorie Content, owned a part interest in the shop, and through them their young cousin Peggy Guggenheim got a job there as a clerk in the second-floor offices, running errands and covering for the booksellers in their lunch breaks.

        A Turkish Woman's European Impressions

London: Seeley, Service & Co, 1913. First edition of this collection of letters by a well-educated Ottoman woman who fled Istanbul for Paris in 1906 to escape an arranged marriage: "the marriage of a Turkish woman is an intensely interesting subject to anyone but a Turkish woman." Born Hadidje Zennour, the author adopted the name Zeyneb Hanoum after the success of Orientalist novelist Pierre Loti's 1906 Les Désenchantées, a lightly fictionalized account of her story. Although Hanoum discovered that the European view of Turkish women was not nearly as progressive as she had hoped, her outsider status lends an incisive, satirical edge to her observations about European culture in the the years before WWI. Her letters cover topics ranging from harems to bullfights to suffragettes. "I was invited to tea at the House of Commons, and to be invited to tea there of all places seemed very strange to me. Is the drinking of tea of such vital importance that the English can never do without it? I wonder if the Turks, now their Parliament is opened, will drink coffee with ladies instead of attending to the laws of the nation!" An exceptional copy, in the very scarce dust jacket. Octavo, original red cloth lettered in gilt, image of the veiled author stamped in gilt to front board, original unclipped pictorial dust jacket, printed paper label with early reviews pasted to lower front panel of jacket, top edge stained red, other edges uncut. Frontispiece portrait, 32 photographic illustrations throughout text, including a portrait of Hanoum drawn by Auguste Rodin. Calligraphic ownership inscription and Sotheran booksellers' ticket to front pastedown. Tiny chips to jacket spine ends.

        Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam

Methuen & Co. Ltd, London 1913 - 19.7 x 25.7cm red cloth with gilt stamped titles and decoration to the front and spine. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. xv(i), (151)pp, plus a tissue guarded frontispiece and 75 line drawn plates. Together with the original dust jacket that echoes the cover and has a 15/- net price at the base of the rear panel. Generally, the boards are in fine condition, with bright gilt and firm, sharp and square fore edge corners. However, there is a small damp stain which affects the foot of the spine and corners of the adjacent boards. The front board is the least affected by this, with a little loss to the corner of the gilt border. The rear board is a little discoloured at the corner as is the bottom of the spine, which has slight loss of gilt to parts of its decoration. The binding is firm and square. Internally, there is a vertical band of acid migration toning to the ffep. otherwise the pages are very clean and bright with only occasional small spots. The frontis tissue guard has a vertical crease and there is a circular stamp across the publisher's name on the title page stating "Presentation Copy". The very scarce dust jacket is very good indeed. The spine panel is a little faded and has chips at three corners and along the foot with very little sign of the damp mark previously mentioned. It has a tiny 1 x 2mm chip at the bottom edge of the front panel with a vertical 1cm closed tear above. Rarely found in its original dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] first edition, one of the few copies printed on green paper for the author that he was fired as 6 or 10 copies (from the correspondence of Emile Paul), pulling wide the smaller paper before 10 Japan and the Netherlands 20. Our copy has a green coverage as all other leading copies, with center back the printed words "copy of Holland paper", additional copies on green paper bearing according bibliographers, a single central finial. Note however that the full inventory of various green blankets remains to be established and bibliographers have not particularly noted the peculiarity or the existence of two types of entries: "copy on / Holland paper" in two lines (as this copy) and "copy on Holland paper" on a line (as on the copy of Madame Simone). The badge scarcity of copies of copyright on green paper unfortunately does not allow to rule in this area and the only copy sold past recent years (at Christie's in April 2014) did not include the back cover. Back slightly thinned as frequently and past witnesses. Our copy is presented in shirt half navy blue morocco, spine with five nerves set with green nets, date and mention "green paper copy" golden tail, marbled paper boards case lined with navy blue morocco, marbled paper boards , inside gray felt, stylish package signed Lavaux. Precious and rare copy wide-margined of the shortest print on large paper. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
