        Autograph letter signed ("RLuxemburg").

No place, [8 October 1913]. - 8vo. 2½ pp. on bifolium. Letter to a comrade who had contacted her with publishing questions, in part (translated): "This poem is hardly suitable for publication. I would advise - if your time allows for it - to read our classic writings: Lassalle, Engels and Marx; you would certainly find many ideas and viewpoints. Right now, your essay to me seems to be based on solely warm feelings instead of clear concepts. That may also derive from the poetic form (of the essay). Having said that, I would be very pleased if you continued to dedicate yourself with the same enthusiasm to our good cause of socialism [ ]". - In fine condition, with a fragile central mailing fold, mild soiling, and a few pencil notations. Accompanied by three unsigned postcard photos.

        Letters from C.R.T.

no place: no publisher, 1913, circa. Blue cloth with gilt title on spine. 173 pp., few bw illustrations. Research indicates strongly that C.R.T. is Clayton R. Truesdale, or Dr. Clayton R. Truesdale from Fremont, Ohio. The letters published in this book were written between Nov. 18, 1911 and June 8, 1912. They were addressed to various relatives and give extensive testimony to his observations throughout Europe and the Middle East during this time period. On page 99, one letter is signed C.R. Truesdale. Further poking around the internet reveals a homeopathic physician in Fremont, Ohio by the name Clayton R. Truesdale. The letters are fascinating and filled with detail. Truesdale did not care for Roosevelt one iota, as made clear in the last letter published, wherein he also says he will tell the recipient many more details when soon he sees them face-to-face. Certainly published in small quantity for private circulation, the book is dedicated to his cousin John R. Packard who it seems, accompanied Truesdale on this trip. Judging from the picture on page 163 in front of Saint Marks feeding pigeons, both men brought along their wives. No copies found. Anywhere. VG.

Handmade book]: The Rhyme of the Cruise of the Pandora II and her Merry Crew of Rustythroats, August, 1915 [cover title]: "Stats" Vance, Chief Engineer: His Souvenir

      - A souvenir book created by Wizard of Oz artist John R. Neill for Arthur T. Vance, editor of the Pictorial Review, containing seven original illustrations by Neill and five photographs of the cruise. Five quarto sheets folded to make 20 pages. Approximately 7.5" x 11". A handsome homemade souvenir "book," created from stiff gray paper, folded, and bound with a blue ribbon tie.The cover is illustrated with a caricature of the Chief and lettered by Neill in pastels and ink. Laid down on the inside of the cover is a printed broadside: "Rhyme of the Cruise of Pandora II.," along with a list of the six men on board. The crew consisted of "Little John" R. Neill, Chef-extraordinaire; "Big John" W. Mitchell, Gunner's Mate; "Demi-John" R. Robinson, Jack of All Trades; "Thirsty Bill" Miller, Head Bartender; "Strats" [presumably the "Stats" (sic) of the front cover] Vance, Chief Engineer; and "Father" Vance, Captain and General Influence for Good.John R. Neill was the children's book and magazine illustrator who was tapped to replace W.W. Denslow as illustrator of the series of Oz books created by L. Frank Baum. Denslow and Baum had a falling out after the first book, and Neill's work came to be synonymous with the series. The owner of the Pandora II, Arthur T. Vance, was Commodore of the Port Washington Yacht Club on Long Island. As editor of the Pictorial Review, a leading women's magazine of the early 20th Century based in New York City, Vance employed Neill to create numerous illustrations for Vance's magazine between 1913 and 1928. He must have prevailed upon Neill to create this souvenir book for Vance's son, recalling adventures on the Vance yacht. The remainder of the book consists of five tipped-in photos of the crew, as well as seven original illustrations by Neill in various media: pen, ink, pencil, watercolor, and gouache. Except for the cover illustration (which is executed directly on the cover card stock), the other seven illustrations are approximately 5" x 6.75" on white paper stock and have been tipped onto the pages. The corners of the illustrations display some light bleed-through from the glue used to affix them, else the book is very near fine. Two of the illustrations have captions penned in the margins, "August 9th, 1915, after the Commodore," and "When Shelter Island needed Shelter."The drawings are largely humorous and whimsical. The Shelter Island illustration shows a misfiring of a small cannon salute from the Pandora, ripping through the sail of a passing boat and then through the Shelter Island lighthouse. Another shows a crew member's head emerging from a scupper, light shining from his bald pate. Another shows seagulls perched on the empty liquor bottles as they are disgorged from the yacht. Perhaps the most appealing is of a young lady in a swimsuit, wild red hair streaming, water-skiing on a makeshift board. Laid in is the personalized handmade textile bookmark of Arthur T. Vance.A fascinating and unique artifact displaying Neill's artistry and inventiveness.

The Lodger.

Leipzig: Bernhard Tauchnitz., 1913. Octavo. Original orange cloth, green calf label to spine. Discoloured and rolled spine, slightly discoloured endpapers, gently bumped corners, exceptionally clean and bright contents. Still an excellent copy. First Tauchnitz edition, published the same year as the first, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "A. S. M. Hutchinson, with the kind thoughts of the writer, Marie Belloc Lowndes". Belloc Lowndes's classic novel, the story of a couple in 1880s London who suspect that their lodger is Jack The Ripper, has long been ranked amongst the finest of detective fiction. It was a best-seller in its day and was the subject of several stage and screen adaptations, most famously by Alfred Hitchcock in 1927.

Photograph album documenting the 1913 Alaskan cruise of the U. S. Coastal and Geodetic Service Survey Steamer USC&GS MacArthur

Alaska, California, and Washington DC 1913 - This 10.5" x 7" album contains over 150 photographs (most between 3.25" and 5.25") glued to 35 leaves. Over 110 of the photos are of the ship's Alaskan mission, many captioned. About a dozen are of Washington DC, and the last 30 or so must have been inserted in 1915 as they are of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. The photographs and leaves are in nice shape. The leather cover is heavily worn at the edges. Some of the highlights include: Washington DC (White House Easter Egg Roll, Wilson's Inaugural Parade, the USC&GS Headquarters), USC&GS MacArthur (the crew, the wardroom, the deck, a bunk, at sea, beached for "bottom cleaning," floating ice, USS Maryland, visitors from the Admiral Sampson), Alaska (La Perouse Glacier, bird's-eye view of Seward, baseball game at Seward, the Augustine and illiamna Volcanoes, camp at Iniskin Bay, Ursus Head, salmon cannery at Port Graham, Capitol Building at Juneau, Swanson Harbor, petting a bear cub, clamming, a mudslide, a meeting of Alaskan Natives in western dress, Juneau street scene showing the Alaska Hotel and The Renovatory laundry, Knik street scenes showing the town pool room and Railroad Kitchen exterior, dining room of what is probably Knik's Railroad Kitichen, an Alaskan Native woman selling beaded moccasins, and real photo postcards of the First Camp Arctic Brotherhood building in Skagway, an aerial view of Ruby City, and Resurrection Bay), and California (views of many buildings at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco)Although the photographs show the MacArthur's crew dressed in USC&GS uniforms, the officers were actually civilians. USC&GS personnel were not formally commissioned until 1917. This was done so that if captured during World War I while performing hydrographic duties, they would be treated as prisoners of war rather than executed a spies. Parts of the USC&GS eventually evolved into what today is the Commissioned Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), one the seven United States Uniformed Services.Exceptionally scarce. As of 2017, OCLC shows one institutional collection of similar loose photographs. There are no auction records for similar items, and none are available for sale in the trade.

[i] (title), [i] (list of instruments), 24, [ii] (blank) pp. Facsimile of the composer's autograph fair copy. Printed dedication to head of title: "Arnold Schönberg, meinem Lehrer und Freunde in höchster Liebe" (to Arnold Schönberg, my teacher and friend, in deepest love). Titling to upper wrapper identical with title. Opus number "4" reiterated in caption title to head of p. 1. "A. 698" printed to foot of first page of music. Wrappers slightly worn and browned. First Edition. Rare. Moldenhauer pp. 706-7. The work was re-numbered op. 6 in 1920. "This work, composed 1909, applies the newly explored possibilities of atonal instrumental composition to the largest orchestra for which Webern ever wrote... But these immense masses of sound are hardly ever used as a whole... Like many of his early works, op. 6 was conceived in reaction to the death of Webern's mother (1906)... In 1928, Webern prepared a second version of the pieces, which... reduces the hypertrophic orchestra to standard size." Manfred Angerer, website of Universal-Edition.
