The Interpretation of Dreams - the true first UK edition

George Allen and Unwin, 1913. Hardcover. Very Good. Freud, Sigmund. THE INTERPRETATION OF DREAMS. London: George Allen, 1913. First English edition. First published in German as 'Die Traumdeutung' in 1899 (but dated 1900), this first English language edition is an "Authorised Translation Of [the] Third Edition with Introduction by A.A. Brill, Ph.B., M.D." The majority of the first edition sheets were bound with a Macmillan cancel title page for issue in America; ours is the original and much scarcer first state with the integral George Allen London-issue title page. Large, heavy octavo, original blue cloth lettered gilt to spine and upper board. Spine a little tanned, with short tears to the head and tail, a bump which has just broken through the cloth near the foot of the spine, and a neatly repaired tear to the bottom inch or so of the right edge; there is rubbing to the edges and extremities and a few marks to the cloth; page edges darkened; previous owner's tiny pencil signature to the top of the ffep; foxed to the first eight or so pages, as, apparently, are most copies. Still present is the publisher's tipped-in label which directs that the sale of the book is "limited to Members of the Medical, Scholastic, Legal, and Clerical professions." A keystone of psychoanalytic theory. Very good. Scarce.

        A Boy's Will

London: David Nutt,, 1913. Octavo. Originall wrappers, titles in black to front. Housed in a green morocco backed bookform slipcase and chemise. Fine. True first edition of Frost's first published book, later issue but wonderfully inscribed with a poetic quotation: "One had to be versed in country things, Robert Frost, for Crosby Gaige". Crosby Gaige (1882-1949) was a New York based publisher and theatrical impressario, who pioneered in the late 20s the production of fine press collections for living authors (which he described as "flowers for the living" as opposed to "garlands for the dead") such as Woolf (Orlando), Joyce (Anna Livia Plurabella), Sassoon and Hardy. Gaige was also a great epicure and frequenter of New York's finest supper clubs and cocktail lounges, and wrote several books on cookery and cocktails. The poetry collection A Boy's Will was the first published book of Robert Frost - who was then already nearing 40 and, though he had written much, had not found a conducive publisher in America. He had moved to London in 1912, hoping to find the scene more receptive to new poetic voices, and, with the support of F. S. Flint and other sympathetic Imagists such as Ezra Pound, managed to secure a deal with David Nutt, who printed 1,000 copies of A Boy's Will. Only about 350 copies were issued by Nutt, who went bankrupt shortly after the war. Frost in the meantime had returned to America at the outbreak of the war, and, bolstered by his London publication and its rave reviews penned by his Imagist friends, achieved the American beginning of his meteoric poetic career with an edition of A Boy's Will published by Henry Holt in 1915. The c.650 remainder copies of A Boy's Will were later issued in a variety of bindings. This copy is in binding D, with 4-petalled flowers, and "Printed in Great Britain" stamped to title page verso. We are aware of one other copy of this same issue also inscribed for Crosby Gaige, though this copy, with its marvellous invocation of one of Frost's most redolent lines (from "The Need of Being Versed in Country Things", first published in 1920), is certainly superior. A Boy's Will was preceded only by the small collection Twilight, 1894, of which only two copies were printed and only one survives, housed in the University of Virginia. In the same library are to be found two Frost limited editions, New Hampshire and West Running Book, both inscribed to Crosby Gaige.

1913 Photo Album of a Month-Long Trip to "Camp Welcome", Saw Mill Bay in Prince William Sound, Alaska

1913. Original wraps. Very Good +. Wonderful album documenting a month-long camping, hunting and fishing trip (started on June 12th, 1913) among several dozen American friends (mostly couples) at "Camp Welcome" in Saw Mill Bay, Prince William Sound, Alaska. Now a popular tourist destination, Saw Mill Bay was clearly very remote at the time (this trip having taken place almost 50 years before Alaska gained statehood) and was chosen by this group for its scenic beauty and seclusion. Dozens of crisp, pasted-in black-and-white photos (most with running captions) capture the group in its various stages of engagement (or non). 2 separate ships ("S.S. Restless" and "Visators Day"), which between them stopped at Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Cordova, Alaska and Valdez, Alaska, delivered the entire group to Camp Welcome by June 12th. We know this because of the "Camp Welcome Visators (sic) Register", a full page listing all of the campers. Preceding this is a full-page menu for June 5th 1913 ("Camp Welcome Grill") and following it is 2 dense, typed pages of fun running commentary by Mr. G. Fawcett and E.W. Hunt. The album is bound in its ribbon-tied, stiff black wrappers and consists of 14 separate pages (all packed with photos and commentary) and a stiff beige re-inforcement at the rear panel. The oblong album (which measures 10 1/4"x7") is clean and crisp and has held up very nicely. This is largely because of the handsome custom-made, oatmeal-cloth box which was designed to house it. The box is tight and Near Fine and even boasts a red-leather title label (with gilt-tooling and lettering) at the spine. And finally, pasted onto the front cover of the album, a neat, typed heading which reads: "'Camp Welcome' Saw Mill Bay, Alaska. June 12th 1913. Here's to 'Camp Welcome', a place of good cheer, For even the 'Restless' must needs tarry here; Since we know that our 'BATH TUB' supplied a long need, We are glad that you used it, in return for the 'FEED'. 'RESTLESS CREW'"

Bok. London: Macmillan and Co., 1913. Empire Library Edition for circulation only in India and the British Dominions over the Seas. First such and the same year as the true first edition. A SCARCE PRINTING AND A CORNERSTONE WORK IN ANTARCTIC LITERATURE. Macmillan published a large series of copy-written books solely for distribution in British holdings outside of England. Many of the titles are scarcer then the issues produced for England and America. In two Volumes. Vol.I. Being the Journals of Captain R.F. Scott. Vol. II. Being the Reports of the Journeys & the Scientific Work undertaken by E.A. Wilson and the Surviving Members of the Expedition. Arranged by Leonard Huxley. With a Preface by Clements R. Markham. Text in English. Illustrated with 8 photographic plates in black and white and two large folding maps. Royal8vo. xviii,497; viii, [2], 431. 2 orig. full cloth. Gilt lettering. Tears at spines ends, corners bumped. 2 frontispieces in photogravure, 6 plates in photogravure, 18 colourplates, 260 photographic illustrations on plates, folded maps and panoramas. Publisher's original stiff paper wrappers, upper covers and spines lettered in black, lower covers and inside pastedowns with publisher's ads for the Empire Library Series. The journals of Scott, which comprise the first volume, are a moving record of one of the great tragedies of exploration. The last entry was made while Scott was dying in the midst of a storm, as he was returning from the South Pole. The second volume contains the accounts of Wilson and Atkinson and several of the scientific reports generated during the expedition. Scott never returned from this expedition, dying on the ice with several of his party. He did manage, however, to preserve his notes where others would find them, protected from the Antarctic winds by his own corpse, and in so doing left the world this record.

(Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:2211) Second edition.Henri Rinck was a French chess study composer, considered one of the most important early figures in the field. He was born in Lyon (France) on January 10, 1870, where his family were brewers (Brasserie Rinck). He graduated as a chemical engineer at the Technische Hochschule of Munich (Germany). He then worked at the Faculte des Sciences in Lyon as an assistant of Dr. Barbier. In 1897 he discovered a refining process for green vegetable oils, which was applied in Marseille (France), then by several olive oil refineries in Spain. In 1900 he set up a factory in Badalona (Spain) and lived there with his family. Before the end of the Spanish civil war he had to leave Spain. He established himself in Marseille, but returned to Spain later. His first chess endgame studies appeared from 1902 in the Deutsche Schachzeitung. In 1909 he published the first collection 150 fins de partie (with an introduction by Johann Berger). A second edition followed in 1913, and in 1919 300 fins de partie and in 1927 700 fins de partie. In 1947 he published Las sorpresas de la teoria (The Surprises of Theory), containing 111 endgames on rook against two minor pieces, and, together with Louis Malpas, Dame contre tour et cavalier (Queen Against Rook and Knight). Rinck died in Badalona on February 17, 1952. Six days before his death he was handed out the first copy of his ultimate collection 1414 fins de partie. On his request he was buried with this book under his arm.Condition:Original wrappers soiled with previous owner's neat ink name on front wrapper, pencil underling of Rinck on title and front wrapper else a very good copy to fine copy.

1913 Photo Album of a Month-Long Trip to "Camp Welcome", Saw Mill Bay in Prince William Sound, Alaska

1913 - Wonderful album documenting a month-long camping, hunting and fishing trip (started on June 12th, 1913) among several dozen American friends (mostly couples) at "Camp Welcome" in Saw Mill Bay, Prince William Sound, Alaska. With three armorial bookplates on front pastedown. Laid in is a reproduction from a woodcut of this edition, used as memento at the exhibition of the Ashendene Press at Stanford University, 1971 "Le Morte d'Arthur" (originally spelled "Le Morte Darthur", Middle French for "the death of Arthur") is a reworking of existing tales by Sir Thomas Malory about the legendary King Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, Merlin, and the Knights of the Round Table. Malory interprets existing French and English stories about these figures and adds original material (e.g., the Gareth story). Le Morte d'Arthur was first published in 1485 by William Caxton, the first English printer, and is today one of the best-known works of Arthurian literature in English. Many modern Arthurian writers have used Malory as their principal source, including T. H. White in his popular The Once and Future King and Tennyson in The Idylls of the King. The first printing of Malory's work was made by Caxton in 1485. Only two copies of this original printing are known to exist, in the collections of the Morgan Library & Museum and the John Rylands Library.[10] It proved popular and was reprinted in 1498 and 1529 with some additions and changes by Wynkyn de Worde who succeeded Caxton's press. Three more editions were published before the English Civil War: William Copland's (1557), Thomas East's (1585), and William Stansby's (1634), each of which contained additional changes and errors (including the omission of an entire leaf). Thereafter, the book went out of fashion until the Romantic revival of interest in all things medieval; the year 1816 saw a new edition by Walker and Edwards, and another one by Wilks, both based on the 1634 Stansby edition. Davison's 1817 edition was promoted by Robert Southey and was based on Caxton's 1485 edition or on a mixture of Caxton and Stansby. Davison was the basis for subsequent editions until the discovery of the Winchester Manuscript. The "Ashendene Press "was a small private press founded by St John Hornby (1867-1946). It operated from 1895 to 1915 in Chelsea, and was revived after the war in 1920. The press closed in 1935. Most Ashendene editions used one of two fonts which were specially cast for the Press: Subiaco, which was based on a fifteenth-century Italian type cast by Sweynheim and Pannartz in Subiaco, Italy, and to a lesser extent Ptolemy. Some Ashendene books, such as that by St. Francis of Assisi shown, were illustrated with wood-engravings, but the majority were printed solely using type. The wood engraver William Harcourt Hooper worked for the Press from about 1896 -wikipedia[Hornby 26.
