Moskowitz) who was born in Budapest in 1885. She became one of the most prominent Hungarian poets of the 20th century, as well as a celebrated painter, graphic artist and designer. She was a key figure in the Hungarian avant-garde, a member of the art movement "The Eight" (A Nyolcak). Her painting and embroideries drew much of their inspiration from Hungarian folklore and folk art.         In Powder and Crinoline.

London: Hodder & Stoughton,, [1913]. Old Fairy Tales Retold. Quarto. Original full green vellum, front cover and spine lettered and pictorially stamped in gilt, pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt, others uncut, green silk ties. Housed in a custom green straight-grain morocco-backed solander box by Zaehnsdorf. Original pen and ink drawing by Nielsen, depicting a deferential gentleman kissing the hand of a sumptuously dressed princess; the tableau bears a striking resemblance – much in the sense of a preparatory drawing – to the more elaborate headpiece illustration for the first story, "Minon-Minette", on page 13. Colour frontispiece, illustrated title page and 25 colour plates on grey textured paper with captioned tissue-guards, black and white illustrations to text. Boards very slightly bowed, minor fading to extremities, an excellent, bright copy. Signed limited edition, number 220 of 500 copies. This copy with an original pen and ink drawing by Nielsen on the reverse of the limitation page, initialled in pencil. An article in the 1913 Christmas Bookman recommends this work describes Nielsen as "a young artist of curiously original gifts. There are traces in his drawings for 'In Powder and Crinoline' of the influence of Aubrey Beardsley, and there are also an imaginative daring, a fantasy, a fascinating grace and decorative loveliness that are peculiarly his own and make his art unique amongst the illustrations of this year's books". Extremely rare with an original drawing: we have neither seen or heard of another copy and no other copies traced at auction.

        Dingo

Paris : Bibliothèque-Charpentier, 1913. First edition, limited to 175 numbered copies; the present copy is one of 25 printed on papier impérial du Japonwith wide margins (copy no. 15). Tall octavo, original full black morocco, spine with raised bands lettered in gilt, with gilt dentelles at head and tail, all edges gilt, inner boards ruled in triple gilt, crimson silk lining papers, marbled endpapers, 422 pp, a fine copy in the magnificent original binding; housed in a slightly later marbled slipcase. The final novel by the French writer Octave Mirbeau, Dingo was completed by his colleague Léon Werth. The story is a disturbing allegory of the violent unpredictability and murderous impulses that lurk deep within the human psyche, the protagonist being a wild dingo whose existence within contemporary French society is described through the first-person narrative of his owner. The chief redeeming quality of the animal is, however, one that is often lacking in common human behaviour: the dingo's spontaneous interactions with its immmediate environment are instinctive and truthful, neither denying the creature's real desires nor masking its own identity. Mirbeau paints the dingo as a paradox of outward savagery and profound harmony, a depiction which perhaps comes close to inverting our general perception of so-called civilised humanity. No copy of the first edition on papier impérial du Japonis recorded in Australian collections.

[Photo Album]: YWCA OH! Club - College Women in the Midwest

Various Midwest locations. mostly 1913-1918. Small oblong octavo. Measuring 8" x 6". Alligator patterned cloth over flexible card. 110 mostly sepia-toned gelatin silver prints. The majority are approximately 4.5" x 2.75" with a few larger. About half are captioned. Small stain on one board, images with a little fading, very good or better, images near fine. The images follow a group of cheerful young women, members of the "Oh! Club" (possibly at Ohio University). The women are shown in large groups starting in 1913 at banquets, at initiations which includes a photo of all the women blindfolded, at a slumber party, a farmer's party, a Christmas party, a "Stag" party, etc. Many of the photos are of the girls traveling as a group to several Midwest locations: the Oh! Camp at Cedar Bluffs, (Nebraska?); at another Oh! Camp at Valley Park, (Missouri?); on a "St. Louis-Mazda Boat Excursion"; north of St. Louis at Chain of Rocks; at "Chautauqua" (which could be one of any number of places). In several of the images the women are dressed as men. The photos are dated through 1917 and show the women delighting in each other's company. There are photos of them in bathing costumes at various Oh! camps, hiking, and posing on a ship. A nice collection of photographs depicting an organization for young women in the early part of the 20th Century. .

Large quarto (11 5/8 x 9 inches; 295 x 230 mm.). 96, [1 imprint], [1 blank]. 28 color plates with captioned tissue guards. 39 decorated initials, 9 head-pieces and 34 tail-piece designs. Top edge gilt. Handmade gold, green and tan endpapers. Housed in the original brown leather edged slipcase. Neat ink inscription on front blank leaf. A fine copy. "Dulac's pictures for The Bells were more uniform in mood and style than groupings for almost any other book of his to this time. Although water colours, they are overstreaked with gilt in some cases, crayon in others, to produce rich haunting effects. Deep shades of blue and a special deep pink-rust predominate throughout...The Outlook, which printed, in black and white, plate 22... commented: '?for the book thinking people will say with grace?sometimes Dulac's pictures are deep-coloured and intense, sometimes dim and ghost-like. But one and all are sensitized to record impressions of unearthly beauty or horror. Only Poe could have written the poems. Only Dulac could have illustrated them.'?Not to be overlooked here are the sophisticated ink drawings Dulac made for headpieces. Although many of the books he illustrated had small ink decorations throughout?he had not worked in this medium so fluently since the days of doing illustrations for The Pall Mall magazine (1906-1908)?As the 10 Bells headpieces show, he had now become truly masterful with his pen" (Hughey).

Henry James said: Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius (as distinct from fine intelligence) that I have ever known. In 1907 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and to date he remains its youngest recipient. Among other honours, he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, all of which he declined. The Bombay edition was initially published in 20 volumes and limited to 1000 copies. Kipling continued to write and it eventually grew to 31 volumes, but the last 11 volumes were limited to 500 copies only.         The Interpretation of Dreams - the true first UK edition

George Allen and Unwin, 1913. Hardcover. Very Good. Freud, Sigmund. THE INTERPRETATION OF DREAMS. London: George Allen, 1913. First English edition. First published in German as 'Die Traumdeutung' in 1899 (but dated 1900), this first English language edition is an "Authorised Translation Of [the] Third Edition with Introduction by A.A. Brill, Ph.B., M.D." The majority of the first edition sheets were bound with a Macmillan cancel title page for issue in America; ours is the original and much scarcer first state with the integral George Allen London-issue title page. Large, heavy octavo, original blue cloth lettered gilt to spine and upper board. Spine a little tanned, with short tears to the head and tail, a bump which has just broken through the cloth near the foot of the spine, and a neatly repaired tear to the bottom inch or so of the right edge; there is rubbing to the edges and extremities and a few marks to the cloth; page edges darkened; previous owner's tiny pencil signature to the top of the ffep; foxed to the first eight or so pages, as, apparently, are most copies. Still present is the publisher's tipped-in label which directs that the sale of the book is "limited to Members of the Medical, Scholastic, Legal, and Clerical professions." A keystone of psychoanalytic theory. Very good. Scarce.

        A Boy's Will

London: David Nutt,, 1913. Octavo. Originall wrappers, titles in black to front. Housed in a green morocco backed bookform slipcase and chemise. Fine. True first edition of Frost's first published book, later issue but wonderfully inscribed with a poetic quotation: "One had to be versed in country things, Robert Frost, for Crosby Gaige". Crosby Gaige (1882-1949) was a New York based publisher and theatrical impressario, who pioneered in the late 20s the production of fine press collections for living authors (which he described as "flowers for the living" as opposed to "garlands for the dead") such as Woolf (Orlando), Joyce (Anna Livia Plurabella), Sassoon and Hardy. Gaige was also a great epicure and frequenter of New York's finest supper clubs and cocktail lounges, and wrote several books on cookery and cocktails. The poetry collection A Boy's Will was the first published book of Robert Frost - who was then already nearing 40 and, though he had written much, had not found a conducive publisher in America. He had moved to London in 1912, hoping to find the scene more receptive to new poetic voices, and, with the support of F. S. Flint and other sympathetic Imagists such as Ezra Pound, managed to secure a deal with David Nutt, who printed 1,000 copies of A Boy's Will. Only about 350 copies were issued by Nutt, who went bankrupt shortly after the war. Frost in the meantime had returned to America at the outbreak of the war, and, bolstered by his London publication and its rave reviews penned by his Imagist friends, achieved the American beginning of his meteoric poetic career with an edition of A Boy's Will published by Henry Holt in 1915. The c.650 remainder copies of A Boy's Will were later issued in a variety of bindings. This copy is in binding D, with 4-petalled flowers, and "Printed in Great Britain" stamped to title page verso. We are aware of one other copy of this same issue also inscribed for Crosby Gaige, though this copy, with its marvellous invocation of one of Frost's most redolent lines (from "The Need of Being Versed in Country Things", first published in 1920), is certainly superior. A Boy's Will was preceded only by the small collection Twilight, 1894, of which only two copies were printed and only one survives, housed in the University of Virginia. In the same library are to be found two Frost limited editions, New Hampshire and West Running Book, both inscribed to Crosby Gaige.
