1913. London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1913. Original grey-green paper-covered boards with cover pictorial onlay. First Edition of the author's nineteenth book, her second title (after THE TALE OF MR. TOD) to appear in the "New Series" that was unfortunately issued in a binding every bit as fragile as the earlier titles.~THE TALE OF PIGLING BLAND was most probably in Beatrix Potter's mind as early as 1910... This story about Pigling Bland has an element of truth in it, for on November 17th 1909, in one of Beatrix Potter's letters... she wrote "The two biggest little pigs have been sold, which takes away from the completeness of the family group. But they have fetched a good price, and their appetites were fearful -- five meals a day and not satisfied."~Both the first and the second printing bear the date 1913 on the title page, and "are believed to be identical" [quotes from Linder]; the third is dated 1914. This copy is grey-green in color; others are in maroon (no priority). Condition is near-fine, with essentially no wear but with the spine slightly darkened; there is a 1914 endpaper inscription "To my darling Scarlet Fever -- Mother". Linder p. 429; Quinby 22.

Princess Badoura; A Tale from the Arabian Nights Retold by Laurence Housman, Illustrated by Edmund Dulac

[London]: Hoddder and Stoughton, 1913. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Dulac, Edmund. First trade edition, quarto size, 119 pp., illustrated with ten colour plates. Edmund Dulac (1882-1953) was the only illustrator of his day on a par with Arthur Rackham and was known for his exquisite colors, oriental influence and the versatility of his artistic endeavors. We cannot describe this book better than Mr. Hughey: "The ten water colours in this book were exhibited at the Leicester Galleries from November 15th until Christmas 1913. Here he does not speak with the zest of the Arabian Nights, nor with the prettiness of the Sleeping Beauty scenes. The message is one of great serenity, of uncluttered order. For this book he has altered his style to follow that of Chinese painting. The result is a very new, but mature style, most subtle in both design and colours. None of his work before or after was quite like it."___DESCRIPTION: Original white cloth stamped in gilt and turquoise and with design from title-page embellished by two peacocks and extra rules, similarly decorated at backstrip with lettering, turquoise endpapers with peacock design in upper corners in darker ink, top-edge turquoise, printed in black and olive ink, ten tipped-in color plates on thick stock, original paper guards printed at the top with the design from the title-page and captions printed in olive; quarto size (10.25" by 7.75"), pagination: [i-vi] [1] 2-113 pp.___CONDITION: A near fine to fine copy, with clean boards whose turqoise and gilt remains bright, straight corners, a strong square text block with solid hinges, the only prior owner markings a vintage Christmas gift inscription and bookplate to the front pastedown; and a hint of rubbing to the bottom front corner and a trace of dustiness to the spine, a near fine copy, scarce in this condition.___CITATION: Hughey 31a, first trade edition.___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard shipping charge does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind book we sell.       Moskovskoe Arkhitekturnoe obshchestvo, Moskva (Moscow Architectural Society, Moscow) 1913 - Russian language. Octavo 14 x 20 cm. Weight 640 g. Wrappers, [2] CCI pp., [XVI] illustration tables, 309 [1] pp., 1 schematic map sheet. The book is in Good condition. Possessory soft cover with some occasional foxing spots and soft creases, original title page is not preserved and replaced with a copy, fore-edge shows some fraying, multiple creases across upper corner of first page, broken off minor piece of bottom corner of first page and top edge of first page, brown stain on the right margin of first four sheets. This one of the best guides to architecture of Moscow was published by the Moscow Architectural Society for their fifth congress in 1913. The book was addressed to professionals, and includes not only large number of pictures of buildings of that period, but also their plans and other special information. Many of these buildings have not survived till our days. According to the historian of architecture E. Kirichenko, the guide is still an extremely valuable source on the subject. It is forwarded by two essays on the history of Moscow architecture from the 14th to early 19th centuries by prominent Russian architects Fyodor Fyodorovich Gornostaev and Ilya Yevgrafovich Bondarenko. The guide is arranged topically. In addition to civil and Church architecture, it also includes chapters on the sewage system, railroads, factories and other industrial buildings, bridges and other river objects, public buildings, etc. Included about 300 photographs, drawings, schemes and plans. Ivan Pavlovich Mashkov (1867–1945) was a Russian architect and preservationist, notable for surveying and restoration of important medieval buildings and creating eclectic buildings with Russian Revival features. In 1908-1918 he co-chaired Moscow Architectural Society. He is credited with editing the best guide to architecture of Moscow, which came out in 1913. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        A Boy's Will

First edition, first issue, first binding (of which there were 350 copies or less from the overall edition of 1000), of Frost's first published book. Original bronze pebble grain cloth, lettered in gilt, a few minor spots of sporadic staining and rubbing, corners bumped, but withal a near fine, solid copy - housed in custom folding case. I Vow to Thee, My Country (British song based on a poem by Sir Cecil Spring Rice circa 1921) written on rear end papers in contemporary hand - presumably by a very patriotic, poetry loving Englishman.****** "The author's first book published in England where the 40 year old poet was living in a Bungalow at Beaconsfield. He had published an earlier work in 1894 called 'Twilight. Five Poems' in an edition of 2 copies one for his future bride, Elinor White, and one for himself. He destroyed his own copy. The remaining copy is at the University of Virginia. **** Frost is closely linked with the New England region, he attempted to catch 'the abstract vitality of our speech' in his poetry. However his first two collections were published in London - A Boy's Will (1913) and North of Boston (1914). He and his wife and children had moved to England in 1912 after he had been unable to make a living in a variety of occupations (including cobbling) or to find a publisher for his poems in America. Through his friendship with the Imagist poet F. S. Flint he made important contacts in London like Ezra Pound, Edward Thomas, T. E. Hulme and Georgian poets like Lascelles Abercrombie and Wilfrid Gibson --these were essential to Frost's publishing success. Books of poetry were usually reviewed by critics who know the author (then and now.) **** When Ezra Pound's favourable review of A Boy's Will appeared in 'Poetry: A Magazine of Verse' in May of 1913, Frost reacted with mixed emotions. He knew that Pound's review would be crucial in influencing other critics in England, but he disagreed with Pound's assessment of his poetry as simple and untutored. Norman Douglas wrote, in a review, of his 'simple woodland philosopy' but there was a darker side to his poems, a combative and troubled spirit--Lionel Trilling famously called him 'a poet of terror' at a speech given on Frost's 85th birthday."         The High-Frequency Spectra of the Elements

London: Taylor and Francis, 1913. First edition. Original wrappers. Very Good. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of both parts of Moseley's groundbreaking work providing the scientific basis for our understanding of atomic numbers and the ordering of the periodic table. PMM 407. "Moseley, working under Rutherford at Manchester, used the method of X-ray spectroscopy devised by the Braggs to calculate variations in the wavelength of the rays emitted by each element. These he was able to arrange in a series according to the nuclear charge of each element. Thus if the nuclear charge of hydrogen is 1, in helium it is 2, in lithium 3, and so on by regular progression to uranium at 92. These figures Moseley called atomic numbers. He pointed out that they also represented a corresponding increase in extra-nuclear electrons and that it is the number and arrangement of these electrons rather than the atomic weight that determines the properties of an element. It was now possible to base the periodic table on a firm foundation, and to state with confidence that the number of elements up to uranium is limited to 92" (Printing and the Mind of Man 407). "Moseley's fundamental discovery was a milestone in our knowledge of the constitution of the atom" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). IN: The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine. Sixth series, vol.26, no.156 (December 1913), pp.1024-1034; and Sixth series, vol.27, no.160 (April 1914), pp.703-713. London: Taylor and Francis, 1913-1914.
