      [London: Hodder & Stoughton,], [1913]. the illustration entitled "'Your Soul!—My Soul!' they kept saying in hollow tones... Four engraved copperplates, each measuring approximately 183 × 134 mm, mounted in a row, together with a full-colour pull of the image, framed and glazed. Traces of green patina where copper has slightly oxidised, else fine condition. Original copperplates made for the four-colour separation process used to produce the final image published opposite p. 148 in the book. This remarkable survival shows Nielsen's painstaking artistic technique in building up the four-colour process (Rackham used a three-colour process) to produce the rich and complex illustrations for his deluxe books.

Late twentieth century three-quarter tan morocco over marbled boards ruled in blind. Spines with five raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. A fine set.Kirriemuir in Angus, Scotland is the birthplace of Peter Pan's creator, JM Barrie. Barrie was a local handloom-weaver's son, born in a little whitewashed cottage at 9 Brechin Road, which is looked after by the National Trust for Scotland, and displays his writing desk, photos and newspaper clippings. The wash-house outside - romantically billed as Barrie's first "theatre" - was apparently the model for the house built by the Lost Boys for Wendy in Never-Never Land."Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet, OM (9 May 1860 – 19 June 1937), more commonly known as J. M. Barrie, was a Scottish novelist and dramatist. He is best remembered for creating Peter Pan, the boy who refused to grow up, whom he based on his friends, the Llewelyn Davies boys. He is also credited with popularizing the name "Wendy," which was uncommon (especially for girls) in both Britain and America before he gave it to the heroine of Peter Pan.       Lincoln, Nebraska: The Woodruff Press, (1913.) . 2nd printing. . Very good in dark blue cloth with white lettering (lettering rubbed and illegible on the spine), some wrinkling to the cloth (binding flaw.) Uncommon. . African-American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux's first book, a self-published novel with a very strong autobiographical influence: Micheaux was a Nebraskan farmer, who eventually lost his land as a victim of fraud. Later, realizing the growing importance of the moving picture industry, he wrote. produced and directed several films with all-black casts, and even financed the films himself. The second printing of this landmark book was just 2 weeks after the first, and is notable both as an early work by an African American who was a pioneer in many different ways, and for its early Nebraska imprint. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the author and 15 photographic plates, mostly of scenes of ranching or farming in Nebraska (all plates are present, but 2 are inserted at different pages than indicated in the list of illustrations.)

Complete run of this rare bi- weekly periodical intended for the upper classes in Pre-Revolutionary Russia, 90 numbers in 72 separate issues from December 15, 1913 to September 30, 1917. Devoted to "the beautiful life", mainly in St. Petersburg and Moscow, the journal described the arts, architecture, fashion, decorating, sports events and entertainment available to the nobility and other moneyed classes of that period. Generously illustrated throughout in color and black and white, with numerous tipped-on color plates and the work of such noted artists as Arthur Rackham, W. Heath Robinson, James Montgomery Flagg, others. Includes the truly scarce issue number 55, devoted to the Tsar and his family, that was suppressed by the Bolsheviks. Numbers 1 through 24 [1913-1914] and 49 through 90 [1916- 1917] in separate issues with decorative covers; numbers 25 through 48 [1915] bound in a hardcover volume with original covers removed. Overall condition is fair to good, with numbers 12-13, 14-15, 81-81 and 89-90 in quite rough condition, others generally good with many of the spines reinforced with old paper tape, all issues lightly age-toned with some brittleness that has resulted in some minor chips to the margins, pages mainly good overall. A fascinating view of the Russian upper classes just before their world was to come to a swift and violent end.

      [Various locations]. 1913-1936.. Thirty-seven composition notebooks, plus two thick scrapbooks. Notebooks mostly octavo with cardboard covers; scrapbooks folio, cloth over heavy boards. Some wear to notebooks, several with chipping. Some leaves a bit brittle. Scrapbooks worn at extremities, cloth frayed. Overall, very good. An important archive of the manuscript writings of author and lyricist Nelle Richmond Eberhart (1871-1944), containing much material relating to the Indianist Movement in American music. Eberhart is best known for her work with composer Charles Wakefield Cadman, and is credited with introducing Cadman to the music and culture of Native American Indians. The archive contains a wealth of prose and lyrical writing, covering more than twenty years of her career from 1913 to 1936 and filling hundreds of sheets of paper. Eberhart became enamored of Native American culture while growing up in Atkinson, Nebraska, where her family moved in 1881. While there she witnessed the trials of Indian removal and relocation to Oklahoma and developed an interest in the culture and music of the local tribes. Later, when married, she lived near Lincoln, Nebraska until moving to Pittsburgh in 1899. A school teacher, author, and lyricist, she was a pioneer of the Indianist music movement, which adapted traditional Native American music into modern-day themes. She met Cadman in Pittsburgh in 1902 at the start of his career, and by 1906 they had created Indianist songs together, and Eberhart was corresponding with Alice Fletcher and others on the topic. Collaborators for many years, Eberhart wrote the lyrics for more than one hundred of Cadman's best-known songs and worked with him on several operas. The most well-known of these songs, "From the Land of Sky Blue Water," written in 1908, was popularized by the American soprano Lillian Nordica and was considered a wild success. Eberhardt's other collaborations with the Cadman included "At Dawning," the opera "Shanewis," and also the songs "The White Dawn Is Stealing," "Far Off I Hear a Lover's Lute," "The Moon Drops Low," "From Wigwam to Teepee," and "I Hear a Thrush at Eve." Eberhardt frequently traveled with Cadman, who was an important collector of Native American music. His cylinder recordings of native music, made in Indian Territory, are at the Smithsonian. At the same time Cadman became a well-known theatre producer Also included here are two large scrapbooks belonging to Eberhart's daughter, the opera singer Constance Eberhart. Constance's career led the family to move to New York in 1918. These scrapbooks include many clippings, correspondence, and at least one signed photograph. A significant archive of an important figure in early modern American music, and of the adoption of American Indian themes into popular culture. Arlouine G.         Archive of drawings, poems, and vignettes for Miscellaneous Moods in Verse. Together with a copy of the published book

      c. 1913. Approximately (53)ff. of varying sizes. A group of original drawings and manuscripts by Elihu Vedder for Miscellaneous Moods in Verse, his collection of 101 illustrated poems. Included are the original pen and ink drawings for all of the black & white illustrations in the book, with the exception of the nine half-tone plates. These drawings are often decorative vignettes, titles, head- and tailpieces. Vedder’s drawings are intricately detailed, ranging in tone from whimsical and humorous to mystical and macabre. Also included are manuscripts of poems which were reproduced in facsimile in the book, written in Vedder’s calligraphic hand with illustrations incorporated into the titles and borders. These original drawings provide insight into Vedder’s creative process, as some show several drafts and variations preceding the final, published version. One of the manuscript poems presents a different version of a poem that is depicted on one of the half-tone plates, and there are three versions of the title illustration for Vedder’s poem “The Love Sick Faun.” & & Also included are a salt print, a printed bookplate, and several miscellaneous drawings not included in the book. These include sketches for Vedder’s personal bookplate, hand-drawn monograms, and two trial examples of the color-illustrated limitation statements that Vedder drew in each of the deluxe copies of the book. Also included is a proof copy of one of the poems that has been delicately hand-colored by Vedder: in a holograph note from Vedder to Sargent at the bottom of the page, the artist suggests that a hand-colored version of the book could be produced, and he offers to create the book as an example if Sargent is interested. Some of the poems and drawings have corrections by the artist, and several have notes in pencil indicating how they were to be used in publication. Vedder was a prolific painter and illustrator, perhaps best-known for his illustrated edition of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. He turned to writing and poetry when he was approaching 80 years of age. (7.7 x 5.3 inches). 8 page publishers advert dated Autumn 1913. A very good copy in publishers green cloth binding with spine decorated and lettered in gilt, including the correct spelling of the publishers name at the bottom. Signed by Joseph Conrad on the front free endpaper, Dated 1923. The top of the signed leaf and the half title page have a small indentation where a paper clip has been used.Aside from some light rubbing to the extremities this is a very good tight copy, the gilt on the spine still strong and bright. Loosely inserted is the front panel from the rare dustwrapper, showing a full colour illustration by J. Dewar Mills within a grey border. The whole panel dark blue with grey title and author. An interesting copy, signed by the author and with part of the wrapper, of the less common 1913 Cancel title page issue. Copies with the true 1913 integral title are rare, it is thought that only about fifty survived, and most early copies were issued with cancel title pages dated 1914 - when the book was finally published.:.

Edward Dowden (1843–1913) was an Irish literary critic, Shakespeare scholar, and poet, and this collection of his poems was published pseudonymously. The editor, Elizabeth Yeats, has inscribed this copy "To Philip & Sophia Miller friends of – Edward & Elizabeth Dowden – this little book is given with many memories, April 1914". Scarce.

First separate edition, first impression of Einstein's 1913 "Draft Generalised Theory of Relativity", a turning point in his thought leading from special to general relativity, and the first example of his new appreciation that mathematics was central to the development of theory. One of the papers indicated by Weil's bibliography as being of special importance. After Einstein published his theory of special relativity in 1905 he realised that it was incomplete, and spent the next seven years trying to find a solution that would incorporate gravity and accelerated motion. His breakthrough was the idea that gravity could be defined as the curvature of space-time, and he enlisted his old friend, the mathematician Marcel Grossman, in the hunt for equations that would describe this phenomena. "Until then Einstein's scientific success had been based on his special talent for sniffing out the underlying physical principles of nature. He had left to others the task, which to him seemed less exalted, of finding the best mathematical expressions of those principles… But by 1912 Einstein had come to appreciate that math could be a tool for discovering–and not merely describing–nature's laws" (Isaacson, Einstein: His Life and Universe, p. 193). Einstein and Grossman approached the problem from two directions, mathematical and physical, and though Einstein came very close to the correct answer from the mathematical approach, abandoned it. Instead, the two men tentatively published as the present text the results from the physical approach, which they felt was "the best they could do for the time being" (Isaacson, p. 198). Einstein was never completely comfortable with this formulation, and in 1915 discovered that Entwurf was seriously flawed and that another physicist was racing to find the correct formulation. It took an "exhausting, four week frenzy" (Isaacson, p. 214) in late 1915 to finally established his special theory of relativity. The present edition was published concurrently with the paper's appearance in volume 62 of Mathematics und Physiks, pages 225–261. Though there are a number of institutional copies of this separate printing recorded in OCLC, no copies appear in the auction records.

The book is attractively housed in a specially designed archival box, featuring French goat spine, Roma paper boards, mahogany frame, and genuine gold titling. Spine rolled, cloth rubbed, a little wear at ends of spine, two dark spots to upper board, spotting to endpapers and title page. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by the author to Lytton Strachey on the front free endpaper, "To G. L. S. from L. S. W. 21 Feb 1913", and with Strachey's bookplate on the front pastedown. Beginning in 1904, Woolf spent seven years in the colonial administration of Ceylon, a period he later described as his "anti-imperialist education". "Striving to improve the lives of the villagers with an efficiency that was at times ruthless, he became increasingly ambivalent about his government's mismanagement of jungle agriculture, the absurdity of one civilization imposing itself on another, and the hypocrisy of the British failure to prepare its colony for self-government. Returning on leave to England in 1911, Woolf began The Village in the Jungle, a novel that movingly reflected these concerns. He became involved again in London with his Cambridge friends and relatives who now made up the Bloomsbury group" (ODNB), including Lytton Strachey, who would remain a close friend of Leonard and his soon-to-be-wife, Virginia Stephen. Doughty, mentioning that he began to read the translations by his correspondent's son, discussing Nigeria and mentioning a Capt. Gordon, "going this week to Northern Nigeria as a Kaimakam." Doughty discusses Palmer's "superannuation from a responsible office, to be able look back upon many years of good work . and one would become gradually reconciled to a change of habit & new & complete leisure. And I can imagine you with your cheerful disposition & quiet humane tastes to be able, as Isaac Walton, to be happy every day & everywhere." Doughty concludes with news of his family and fond recollections of their visit to Kirby, "Believe me, sincerely yours, Charles M.       Cunard.. No date. Ca. mid 1920s.. Color foldout poster showing a cutaway section of the ship, sheet 10 x 48 1/4 inches (25.5x122.5cm), 5 folds as issued. Travel agent stamp at upper right corner of image (smudged), otherwise very good condition. Blank verso. The luxurious Cunard liner Aquitania was launched in 1913 and began sea trials the following year. The vessel completed only three round trip crossings of the Atlantic before being pressed into service as a troop ship during World War I. (On 25 June 1915 she sailed from Liverpool with over 5,000 troops on board heading for the Gallipoli conflict.) After the war Aquitania was refitted for passenger service and at the same time converted from coal to oil burning (see item 83 "Oil Bunkers" on the diagram's index) and on 17 July 1920 resumed Liverpool - New York service. (It may be that this diagrammatic poster was issued in connection with the Aquitania's resumption of passenger service.) Three classes of service are listed (1st, 2nd, 3rd), while in 1927 "Tourist" class service was sandwiched between 2nd and 3rd. Aquitania served as a troop ship during the Second World War and remained in passenger service until 1949; she was scrapped the following year in Scotland. On the poster, below the cut-away image of the ship, is a line of technical information about the vessel: "Length 901 feet - Breadth 97 feet - Depth (from Boat Deck) 921 feet - Gross Tonnage 47,000 - Speed 23 Knots - Height to Tops of Funnels 164 free - Height to Mastheads 220 feet - Accommodation for nearly 5,000." As is the case with many sought-after posters from the 20s and 30s, the Aquitania diagram was produced by means of color lithography. .

Frontispiece proof of an etching by Ernest D. Roth. Quarter cloth and printed and stamped paper covered boards with leather spine label gilt. Printed in black, red, and brown with twelve facsimiles of etchings by Durer, Rembrandt, Whistler, and others. Some chips at the edges of the label, else very good plus. One of 325 copies. Laid in are four Autograph Letters Signed, totaling eleven pages, one from Ernest D. Roth (2 pages) enclosing proof etchings to be used in the book (not present). The other three are from the author and President of the Society,Thomas Wood Stevens. One (4 pages) comments on the proofs of the book and his corrections;another (2 pages) comments on his delight with the finished book; and the third (3 pages) suggest that now that Chicago-area members have become more active, a new President should be elected. All of the letters are to Bertha Jaques, the Secretary and Treasurer of The Chicago Society of Etchers, who apparently was in charge of the project to produce this book. Thomas Wood Stevens was an artist, teacher, author, and theater director. He served has head of the Illustration Department at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1903-1911; cofounded the Blue Sky Press, 1899-1907; he served as head of the Drama Department at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, 1913-1925; then at the Kenneth Sawyer Goodman Memorial Theatre, 1925-1930. A wonderful association copy of a handsome volume. .
