Spine rolled, cloth rubbed, a little wear at ends of spine, two dark spots to upper board, spotting to endpapers and title page. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by the author to Lytton Strachey on the front free endpaper, "To G. L. S. from L. S. W. 21 Feb 1913", and with Strachey's bookplate on the front pastedown. Beginning in 1904, Woolf spent seven years in the colonial administration of Ceylon, a period he later described as his "anti-imperialist education". "Striving to improve the lives of the villagers with an efficiency that was at times ruthless, he became increasingly ambivalent about his government's mismanagement of jungle agriculture, the absurdity of one civilization imposing itself on another, and the hypocrisy of the British failure to prepare its colony for self-government. Returning on leave to England in 1911, Woolf began The Village in the Jungle, a novel that movingly reflected these concerns. He became involved again in London with his Cambridge friends and relatives who now made up the Bloomsbury group" (ODNB), including Lytton Strachey, who would remain a close friend of Leonard and his soon-to-be-wife, Virginia Stephen.       Eastbourne, 10 august 1913 - Excellent and wide-ranging, reminiscent letter from the great Arabian explorer and author Charles M. Doughty, mentioning that he began to read the translations by his correspondent's son, discussing Nigeria and mentioning a Capt. Gordon, "going this week to Northern Nigeria as a Kaimakam." Doughty discusses Palmer's "superannuation from a responsible office, to be able look back upon many years of good work . and one would become gradually reconciled to a change of habit & new & complete leisure. And I can imagine you with your cheerful disposition & quiet humane tastes to be able, as Isaac Walton, to be happy every day & everywhere." Doughty concludes with news of his family and fond recollections of their visit to Kirby, "Believe me, sincerely yours, Charles M.         Cunard Line R.M.S. "Aquitania."

      Cunard.. No date. Ca. mid 1920s.. Color foldout poster showing a cutaway section of the ship, sheet 10 x 48 1/4 inches (25.5x122.5cm), 5 folds as issued. Travel agent stamp at upper right corner of image (smudged), otherwise very good condition. Blank verso. The luxurious Cunard liner Aquitania was launched in 1913 and began sea trials the following year. The vessel completed only three round trip crossings of the Atlantic before being pressed into service as a troop ship during World War I. (On 25 June 1915 she sailed from Liverpool with over 5,000 troops on board heading for the Gallipoli conflict.) After the war Aquitania was refitted for passenger service and at the same time converted from coal to oil burning (see item 83 "Oil Bunkers" on the diagram's index) and on 17 July 1920 resumed Liverpool - New York service. (It may be that this diagrammatic poster was issued in connection with the Aquitania's resumption of passenger service.) Three classes of service are listed (1st, 2nd, 3rd), while in 1927 "Tourist" class service was sandwiched between 2nd and 3rd. Aquitania served as a troop ship during the Second World War and remained in passenger service until 1949; she was scrapped the following year in Scotland. On the poster, below the cut-away image of the ship, is a line of technical information about the vessel: "Length 901 feet - Breadth 97 feet - Depth (from Boat Deck) 921 feet - Gross Tonnage 47,000 - Speed 23 Knots - Height to Tops of Funnels 164 free - Height to Mastheads 220 feet - Accommodation for nearly 5,000." As is the case with many sought-after posters from the 20s and 30s, the Aquitania diagram was produced by means of color lithography. .

      Published by The Chicago Society of Etchers for its Members Chicago: Published by The Chicago Society of Etchers for its Members. 1913. First. First edition. Octavo. Frontispiece proof of an etching by Ernest D. Roth. Quarter cloth and printed and stamped paper covered boards with leather spine label gilt. Printed in black, red, and brown with twelve facsimiles of etchings by Durer, Rembrandt, Whistler, and others. Some chips at the edges of the label, else very good plus. One of 325 copies. Laid in are four Autograph Letters Signed, totaling eleven pages, one from Ernest D. Roth (2 pages) enclosing proof etchings to be used in the book (not present). The other three are from the author and President of the Society,Thomas Wood Stevens. One (4 pages) comments on the proofs of the book and his corrections;another (2 pages) comments on his delight with the finished book; and the third (3 pages) suggest that now that Chicago-area members have become more active, a new President should be elected. All of the letters are to Bertha Jaques, the Secretary and Treasurer of The Chicago Society of Etchers, who apparently was in charge of the project to produce this book. Thomas Wood Stevens was an artist, teacher, author, and theater director. He served has head of the Illustration Department at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1903-1911; cofounded the Blue Sky Press, 1899-1907; he served as head of the Drama Department at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, 1913-1925; then at the Kenneth Sawyer Goodman Memorial Theatre, 1925-1930. A wonderful association copy of a handsome volume. .

Very good in dark blue cloth with white lettering (lettering rubbed and illegible on the spine), some wrinkling to the cloth (binding flaw.) Uncommon. . African-American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux's first book, a self-published novel with a very strong autobiographical influence: Micheaux was a Nebraskan farmer, who eventually lost his land as a victim of fraud. Later, realizing the growing importance of the moving picture industry, he wrote. produced and directed several films with all-black casts, and even financed the films himself. The second printing of this landmark book was just 2 weeks after the first, and is notable both as an early work by an African American who was a pioneer in many different ways, and for its early Nebraska imprint. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the author and 15 photographic plates, mostly of scenes of ranching or farming in Nebraska (all plates are present, but 2 are inserted at different pages than indicated in the list of illustrations.)

Marguerite Montaut (che sovente utilizzò il soprannome Gamy) assieme al marito Ernest, si dedicò nella produzione di tavole illustranti i più svariati eventi della prima apparizione del motore in gare di motoscafi, motocicli, automobili e dirigibili. Gamy si specializzò in particolar modo nella composizione di soggetti di velivoli, spesso rappresentandoli nei loro primi voli significativi. Il complesso processo di colorazione delle litografie impegnò una numerosa squadra di artisti di alto livello, che contribuì all'enorme successo che le opere dei coniugi Montaut ebbero in tutta l'Europa contemporanea, affascinata dalla nascita e dalla veloce evoluzione che ebbe il motore nei suoi primi anni di vita. Con le commoventi lettere ritrovate accanto al suo cadavere, che Scott scrisse in fin di vita alla sua famiglia, alla moglie del compagno Wilson e ad altri. Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) fu marinaio ed esploratore britannico. Animato dal desiderio di raggiungere il Polo Sud, organizzò numerose esplorazioni nel continente antartico. La spedizione narrata in quest'opera è quella più celebre. Fu condotta tra il 1910 ed il 1913 a bordo della nave "Terra nova" e si trasformò ben presto in una competizione con Amundsen. Scott raggiunse l'ambita meta nel gennaio del 1912, ma era stato preceduto di qualche settimana dal rivale norvegese. Fu questo l'ultimo viaggio per Scott ed i suoi uomini, che trovarono la morte sulla barriera di Ross. Ottimo stato. Piccola riparazione ad una cuffia. Prima edizione. FIRST EDITIONS of two critical papers in developing our understanding of the atom: 1) all three parts of Bohr's landmark work marking the definitive break from using classical physics at the atomic level, often cited as the foundation of our modern understanding of the atom; 2) both parts of Moseley's groundbreaking work providing the scientific basis for our understanding of atomic numbers and the ordering of the periodic table. PMM 407 (Moseley). BOHR:"'On the constitution of atoms and molecules' was seminally important to physics. Besides proposing a useful model of the atom, it demonstrated that events that take place on the atomic scale are quantized: that just as matter exists as atoms and particles in a state of essential graininess, so also does the process. Process is discontinuous and the 'granule' of process- of electron motions within the atom, for example- is Plank's constant. The older mechanistic physics was therefore imprecise; though a good approximation that worked for large-scale events, it failed to account for atomic subtleties… Bohr was happy to force this confrontation between the old physics and the new. He felt that it would be fruitful for physics. Because original work is inherently rebellious, his paper was not only an examination of the physical world but also a political document. It proposed, in a sense, to begin a reform movement in physics… 'On the constitution of atoms and molecules,' so proudly and bravely titled- Part I mailed to Rutherford on March 6, 1913, Parts II and III finished and published before the end of the year- would change the course of twentieth-century physics. Bohr won the 1922 Nobel Prize in Physics for the work" (Rhodes, The Making of the Atomic Bomb, 69-75).MOSELEY:"Moseley, working under Rutherford at Manchester, used the method of X-ray spectroscopy devised by the Braggs to calculate variations in the wavelength of the rays emitted by each element. These he was able to arrange in a series according to the nuclear charge of each element. Thus if the nuclear charge of hydrogen is 1, in helium it is 2, in lithium 3, and so on by regular progression to uranium at 92. These figures Moseley called atomic numbers. He pointed out that they also represented a corresponding increase in extra-nuclear electrons and that it is the number and arrangement of these electrons rather than the atomic weight that determines the properties of an element. It was now possible to base the periodic table on a firm foundation, and to state with confidence that the number of elements up to uranium is limited to 92" (Printing and the Mind of Man 407). The toe and foot of spine panel are frayed, with a split in the front cover board along the front seam at the spine panel. This can easily be repaired by a bookbinder. Otherwise, binding is tight. Text block, interior pages and illustrated end papers are clean and unmarked. Small bookseller's sticker pasted to rear end paper. Front cover slightly faded but fully readable, rubbed at extremities from shelf wear. This is complete with 24 tissue guarded tipped-in illustrations by Nielsen.

        Two original images transmitted in 1925 by "Radiovision" by C. J. Jenkins

      TWO OF THE FIRST IMAGES TRANSMITTED  BY C. FRANCIS JENKINS OVER RADIO WAVES USING  HIS MECHANICAL TELEVISION TECHNOLOGY.Stamped  by him on verso – originals laid into  his own copy of his book-illustrations in book after these. Unique and incredibly important in science and history of television.“Jenkins moved on to work on television. He published an article on "Motion Pictures by Wireless" in 1913, but it was not until 1923 that he transmitted moving silhouette images for witnesses, and it was June 13, 1925 that he publicly demonstrated synchronized transmission of pictures and sound. He was granted the U.S. patent No. 1,544,156 (Transmitting Pictures over Wireless) on June 30, 1925 (filed on March 13, 1922).” We offer the two of  the actual photographs he transmitted.  As far as we know there is one original in the Library Of Congress in the copyright collection and seven others with the same provenance as ours, now in a private television museum.  We know of no others in public or private collections.THE PHOTOGRAPHSTwo original photographs which were laid in loosely at the pages where the image was reproduced in Vision By Radio.  Radio Photographs. Radio Photograms, 1925.  On page 17 it states: “ This and succeeding pages are examples of photographs received by radio from a distance by the Jenkins system, some of them from Washington to Philadelphia, and represent the best work done in 1922, 1923, and 1924. “At page 19:  4 1/2” x 2 13/16”, image 3 3/8” x 2 3/8”,  faint indentation of paper clip on bottom margin not affecting image. Verso stamped in purple ink: “  This photograph was sent /and received by Radio./  Jenkins Laboratories/Washington, D.C.” [ Black and white photograph, head and shoulders image of Sybil Almand]  Sybil Almand was on the staff of Jenkins Laboratories and, hence, was one of the first television researchers in the world.  She may have been the first woman involved in television research but this needs further research.At page 38:  2 13/16” x 3 7/16”, closed tear in blank space to right of text 5/8” long. ”.[Black and white photograph of a text in Japanese calligraphy, but not the text pictured on page 38, which is also a message in Japanese calligraphy.]  Verso stamped in blue ink: “ This photograph was/ sent and received by Radio/ Time/Distance/Radio Pictures Corp./Washington, D.C.”  Manuscript inscription in black ink in C. Francis Jenkins’ hand: “ First/ Japanese Radio/ message in/ native characters/sig. Capt Kurado “HISTORICAL CONTEXTCharles Francis Jenkins ( 1867-1934) is recognized as the earliest major American television pioneer.   Albert Abramson, whose History Of  Television,  1880 To 1941 is  recognized as authoritative,  tells us  that as early as 1894 C.  Francis  Jenkins wrote an article about a device for transmitting pictures by electricity.  Using the prismatic ring approach to mechanical television, which Jenkins invented, it was reported that he transmitted the image of a woman by radio on June 14, 1923. Abramson says “Whether ‘live’ or a photograph, this was the first transmission of television by radio ever reported.” ( page 60).  Others, such as Bingley give credit both to Jenkins and Baird as the first to demonstrate actual television images, in 1925.  However before the transmission of a Dutch wind mill moving in 1925, Jenkins and others state that he was transmitting photographs by radio in 1922, 1923, and 1924. Radio News and Popular Radio reported transmissions from December, 1923.  The photographs he transmitted are reproduced in Vision By Radio.  Radio Photographs. Radio Photograms. Even Baird, although he disparaged Jenkins' images as “blurry” and his machine as expensive said in a September 27, 1924 letter to his backer Will  Day  “ Up to the present the only other man who has been able to demonstrate anything has been C.F. Jenkins…I cannot say whether Jenkins was first or not but as our systems are quite different it does not much matter. “ ( Kamm and Baird, John Logie Baird. A Life, 2002, page 53).PROVENANCEC. Francis Jenkins died in 1934 when his father was 90.  This explains why C. Francis Jenkins’ father was giving his son’s book to his friend Roy Hirshburg in 1936 when he was 92 years of age. It seems highly probable that this copy of the book was C. Francis Jenkins’ own copy, which his Father inherited upon C.Francis’ demise. This belief is bolstered by the original photographs which were loosely laid into the pages at the appropriate places and the presence of two more photographs, from 1925 and 1927, one of which was used for a paper published in 1927.  It is also possible, however, that the book and the photographs were given to his father by C.Francis Jenkins.  In either case the direct source for the photographs is C. Francis Jenkins.  The hand stamps and the manuscript notes on the verso of some photographs in Jenkins’ own hand are further evidence of this.  The book in which the two photographs offered were found is:JENKINS, C.[HARLES] FRANCIS. 1925.   Vision By Radio.  Radio Photographs. Hirshburg/ from/ Amasa N. Jenkins   age 92 / father of/ C. Francis Jenkins/ 1936.

Contemporary three-quarter crushed green morocco, spines with 5 raised bands, lettered direct in gilt to two compartments, ornamentally blocked in gilt to 4 compartments, green cloth sides,top edges gilt others uncut. The bindings by Dulau & Co. Spines uniformly, and most attractively, sunned to olive. Narrow paint (?) mark to lower cover of 2 volumes. A beautiful set finely and strongly bound and very clean internally. This set was complete when issued, however as Kiping continued to write, a further 6 volumes were issued over the following 19 years.

        Typhoon: A Play in Four Acts

      Methuen and Co. London: Methuen and Co.. (1913). First. First English edition. Translated by Laurence Irving. Foxing to the foredge, near fine in near fine pictorial dustwrapper with a couple of tiny nicks and tears. Inscribed by the translator: "Ralph Leach with the best wishes of Laurence Irving." A play by a Hungarian author that starred Laurence Irving himself, alongside a young Claude Rains, in its 1913 London debut. It was the basis for at least three films, including a 1914 U.S. version directed by Reginald Barker and featuring Sessue Hayakawa, Gladys Brockwell, and Frank Borzage. Many of Lengyel's stories and plays were filmed, most notably Ninotchka and To Be or Not To Be. Very scarce in jacket, and doubly scarce signed by the translator and star Irving -- he drowned in the horrific sinking of the RMS Empress in 1914. .

Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. . Folio (16 /8" x 11 1/2"). . Title printed in red and black. Fifty-two fine plates, twenty-seven chromolithographically printed, with gold. Numerous text illustrations. Index. Corners rubbed, minor soiling. A very good copy. Edward Almack (1852-1917) was a noted book collector and writer on books. His publications include A Bibliography of The King's Book, or Eikon Basilike (1896), The Cavalier-Soldier's Vade-Mecum (1900), The History of the Second Dragoons: "Royal Scots Greys (1908), and Bookplates (1910). The present book features a running account of Almack's experiences as a book collector. The bindings illustrated are largely the work of Samuel and Charles Mearne, premier English binders of the seventeenth century.

Sehr sauberes und frisch erhaltenes Exemplar aus dem Vorbesitz von H.F. Norman mit seinem Exlibris im vorderen Innendeckel, in diesem Erhaltungszustand das beste Exemplar der letzten 30 Jahre. Die zentrale theoretische Schrift erschien zuerst als Aufsatzfolge in den ersten beiden Jahrgängen der Zeitschrift "Imago" 1912/13. Die vorliegende Buchausgabe enthält ein neues, zweiseitiges Vorwort von Freud, dies nicht ausdrücklich bei Meyer-Palmedo/Fichtner erwähnt. Das Vorwort ist datiert: "Rom, im September 1913". Freud war vom 7. bis zum 25. September mit Minna in der Ewigen Stadt, es war sein längster Aufenthalt dort. Der sozialanthropologische Meilenstein seines Denkens, die Hypothesen über die Urhorde und den Vatermord, werden erstmals im vierten Teil des Buches dargelegt. Thomas Mann schrieb in seinem im ersten Heft der Zeitschrift5 "Psychoanalytische Bewegung" abgedruckten Essay über Freuds Stellung in den Geisteswissenschaften: "Fragte man mich, welcher unter den kühnen und umwälzenden Beiträgen Sigmund Freuds zur Erkenntnis des Menschlichen auf mich den stärksten Eindruck gemacht habe, wenn sein Name fällt, so würde ich ohne Besinnen die große, viergeteilte Arbeit TOTEM und TABU? nennen." Sie sei "nach Aufbau und literarischer Form ein allen großen Beispielen deutscher Essayistik verwandtes und zugehöriges Meisterstück".

Opened envelope (addressed in Doughty's hand) tipped to blank verso. Fine . Excellent and wide-ranging, reminiscent letter from the great Arabian explorer and author Charles M. Doughty, mentioning that he began to read the translations by his correspondent's son, discussing Nigeria and mentioning a Capt. Gordon, "going this week to Northern Nigeria as a Kaimakam." Doughty discusses Palmer's "superannuation from a responsible office, to be able look back upon many years of good work ... and one would become gradually reconciled to a change of habit & new & complete leisure. And I can imagine you with your cheerful disposition & quiet humane tastes to be able, as Isaac Walton, to be happy every day & everywhere." Doughty concludes with news of his family and fond recollections of their visit to Kirby, "Believe me, sincerely yours, Charles M. Doughty."

      The London Counties Press Association Folio, original full brown morocco, cover and spine ruled and lettered in gilt, illustrated with 15 color plates, 2 photogravures, and 39 half-tone illustrations on 24 plates with printed tissue guards, xvi, 345, [1] pp. Spine faded, some light scuffing to leather, light foxing toward the front and rear of the volume; otherwise very good, and contents generally bright and clean. This work, which is a limited edition, is the second in the publisher's series "The Gun at Home and Abroad." This copy is number 658 of 950. While the first volume of the series focused on bird hunting, this one directs its attention to deer and small game, and the authors provide considerable detail on hunting techniques. There is also a chapter on the evolution of rifles and guns, and a final chapter on game laws affecting deer and small game. Many of the illustrations are very colorful, and quite impressive.

This is a particularly handsome and well-bound set of the magnificent and rare definitive edition of the collected works of Tycho Brahe. It is limited to 225 sets (of which only one hundred sets were for sale) and is printed on fine thick paper. Edited by the great scholar Dreyer, who wrote the standard biography of Brahe, this edition contains all of Brahe's published writings as well as his letters and a considerable amount of MS. material, all with full bibliographical details. A fine and attractive set of an extremely uncommon work. Each volume is in a slipcase. .
