London: Constable and Co., 1913.. Gilt blue buckram. Cloth dusty and a bit edgeworn, corners bumped, some offsetting to endsheets, else a good copy. With the book labels of Simon Nowell-Smith and his wife, Judith Adams Nowell-Smith. First edition. A fine association copy, inscribed by the author to Edward Marsh: "To E.M. with best wishes from W.d.l.M. June 1913." In response, Marsh wrote to de la Mare: "I've waited to write until I had time to read it twice and let it sink in. There are exquisite things in it, and no one else could have written them, or anything like them. 'Dick and the Moon' is perhaps the one that takes me most of all, another great favourite is 'The Little Green Orchard', and there are several others that run them close. 'The Ship of Rio' is delicious, and so is the one about the three farmers - - 'Axcusing Silver' is an inspiration! (There are some that I don't see quite enough point in . . . praps it's my fault?)." Across Unknown South America. With 2 Maps, 8 Coloured Plates, and 260 Illustrations from Photographs by the Author. In Two Volumes.

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1913 - 2 volumes, large octavo. Original blue pebble-grain cloth, titles to spine and upper board gilt, crests and star design to upper boards in gilt, blue, and green. With the dust jackets. Cloth fresh save for very light rubbing at extremities, some spotting to endpapers and edges of text blocks and very occasionally to contents. An excellent set in the dust jackets with toned spine panels and some chips and short closed tears, the jacket of volume II with two closed tears from the edges to the circular portion in the middle of the upper panel. Photogravure portrait frontispiece to volume I, and 170 other plates from photographs by the author, and a further 8 coloured coloured plates from his water-colours, one mounted as the frontispiece to volume II, full-page route map, and folding chart of the passage of the Arinos and Arinos-Juruena Rivers. First edition, first impression. Account of Savage-Landor's hair-raising exploits in South America, from Rio de Janeiro "he trekked inland into the Northern Mato Grosso in the company of an unruly band of porters who ditched his possessions and stole provisions whenever the opportunity arose. Several times they mutinied and demanded to be released from his employ, only to realize that alone they had no hope of finding their way home" (Howgego). Landor mapped the Rio Arinos, which he descended to the Rio Juruena, continuing to the Rio Tapajós, and entered the Amazon after a "harrowing journey" in which they were rescued from their sinking raft by a rubber planter on his annual excursion upriver. The party descended the Amazon to its mouth at Belém, then re-ascended the river to Peru, crossed the Andes to Lima, thence to Cusco and La Paz, and back to the Pacific at Antofagasta; "There he shipped to Valparaiso, crossed the Andes for the fourth time and made his way overland to Buenos Ayres. The total distance was reckoned by Landor to be 13,750 miles." Savage-Landor was one of the last explorers in the grand style; "Landor's want of training and his impatience to press on with all speed made him an unreliable surveyor, and there were those who impugned the veracity of his hair-raising escapes; but in energy and resourcefulness, in courage and power of endurance, he was the equal of any of the previous generation of great explorers. He scorned special equipment and commonly appeared on a mountain or in a jungle as he would in Bond Street. His contempt for ropes and nailed boots nearly cost him his life mountaineering on several occasions." (ODNB) Howgego IV, L6 [Attributes: First Edition]

Kipling was one of the most popular writers in England, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Henry James said: Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius (as distinct from fine intelligence) that I have ever known. In 1907 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and to date he remains its youngest recipient. Among other honours, he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, all of which he declined. The Bombay edition was initially published in 20 volumes and limited to 1000 copies. Kipling continued to write and it eventually grew to 31 volumes, but the last 11 volumes were limited to 500 copies only. This collection is twenty-two volumes of the original twenty five limited to 1050. With water marks to the endpapers. Condition: In original publishers' half cloth bindings with paper covered boards. Somefoxing to the endpapers and textblock edge. Many leaves are uncut. Overall: VERY GOOD..

Thomson observed two patches of light on the photographic plate, which suggested two different parabolas of deflection. Thomson concluded that neon is composed of atoms of two different atomic masses (neon-20 and neon-22), that is to say of two isotopes. This was the first evidence for isotopes of a stable element; Frederick Soddy had previously proposed the existence of isotopes to explain the decay of certain radioactive elements. Thomson's separation of neon isotopes by their mass was the first example of mass spectrometry, which was subsequently improved and developed into a general method by Thomson's student F. W. Aston and by A. J. Dempster. (Wikipedia)..

Two Books Extra-Illustrated by Bernarda Bryson as a Young Girl, ca. 1913

      - In one volume Bernarda Bryson Shahn has added a lengthy holograph note in ink, signed by her and dated 1995: "NOTE: this book was inscribed with my name.& decorated profusely by me in - as I figure it, 1913. It was found by Bert and Sally Kozma in 1995 - 82 years later.I read it - didn't remember it - but meanwhile I've also spent time in Egypt, stayed at the Mena House, taken a boat up the Nile, beheld the sunrise over the Temple at Luxor." The sketches include a number of likenesses and caricatures in profile, probably drawn from the young artist's imagination but quite accomplished and with full indication of the promise that would eventually reveal itself in her mature work. The drawings in the second volume, while generally cruder and lacking the ironclad provenance of those in the first, are similar enough in style and subject that we feel quite confident that they are also the work of young Miss Bryson. Of particular interest is a sketch on the rear endpaper illustrating a passage from Longfellow's "The Golden Legend" - it is quite fully finished (by a ten-year-old's standards) and suggests an affinity for book illustration which would in later years become Bernarda Bryson Shahn's primary focus. Two octavo volumes (a 1902 Longfellow Collected Poems and a ca. 1914 reprint of C.N. & A.M. Williamson's It Happened in Egypt) with extensive juvenile marginalia by Bernarda Bryson when about ten years of age. From the library of Ben and Bernarda Bryson Shahn, with estate labels tipped on at each front pastedown.
