4 Bände. Dictionary of the Irish Language. Based mainly on Old and Middle Irish Materials.

Dublin: Royal Irish Academy, 1913 - 78.. Ca. 400 S. (doppelspaltig; in wechselnder Paginierung) pro Band. Originalleinen.. - This work has appeared over the years in parts, some with the title Dictionary of the Irish language (D-degoir,) E and F), the remainder as Contributions to a dictionary of the Irish language. The relationship between the two is explained in what follows. The early history of the undertaking fwas dealt with by R. I. Best in his ' On recent Irish studies in the Academy ', an address delivered to the Royal Irish Academy on 25 February 1946 and later published as Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy Section C No. 2. This is the main source of information for much of what follows, though of course the later years have been dealt with on the basis of personal knowledge. The Dictionary was first projected at a meeting of the Irish Archaeological Society held in November 1852. The beginnings were slow and consisted mainly in the preparation of plans, projects and memoranda. The original idea was that the work should be carried out by the two foremost Irish scholars of the day, John O'Donovan and Eugene O'Curry. Unfortunately both of these were dead by 1862, and only their several individual efforts remain, O'Donovan's in the form of his supplement to O'Reilly's Irish-English dictionary (new edition 1864), O'Curry's in manuscript in four large volumes in the Academy archives. Before he died O'Donovan had outlined his ideas of what the Dictionary should be and the lines along which it should be compiled. The main basis was to be a thorough excerpting of the older Irish MSS. and of such other texts as were available. The meanings of words were to be supported by citations. Etymology was not to be attempted apart from derivation within Irish itself and the giving of sources of loanwords. These directions have in fact been adhered to in the work as eventually compiled. A further pronouncement of O'Donovan's has proved to be only too true-' This task can hardly be performed in our time, and it will be found that the workmen will break down before it is half done.' He can, however, hardly have foreseen the long delay which would ensue and the number of workers who would die without seeing the results of their labours in print. Nor can he have foreseen the particular direction the work would take. It would seem that in the early days Irish was looked on as a seamless garment for lexicographical purposes. But by the time publication of at least some of the Dictionary became imminent it had been agreed that the first requirement was to deal with the older language, and the first fasciculus to be issued added to Dictionary of the Irish language the words ' based mainly on old and middle Irish materials.' And although Marstrander, the editor of this fasciculus, makes reference to modern Irish forms, this was not continued, and the Dictionary remains for all intents and purposes a dictionary of early Irish. After the death of O'Donovan and O'Curry little immediate progress was made, and it was not till 1880 that a further important step was taken. This was the appointment of Robert Atkinson as editor. In Irish studies Atkinson is chiefly remembered for his massive and still extremely useful glossaries to the official edition of the Ancient laws of Ireland and to his editions of the Passions and homilies from the Leabhar Breac and Keating's Three shafts of death. But in spite of the energy and expertise which must have gone to the making of these lexicographical aids little apparent progress with the Dictionary was made during the twenty-seven years of his editorship, from which he retired in 1907. During the years from 1900 to 1907 Whitley Stokes and Kuno Meyer had published the three volumes of the Archiv fiir celtische Lexicographie, and to these were appended Meyer's Contributions to Irish lexicography, described as a ' collection of words . . . the outcome of about twelve years' desultory reading of Middle- and Modern-Irish books and manuscripts.' This extends only from A to DNO, and was by no means intended as a full-scale dictionary. On Atkinson's retirement Meyer took over the direction of the Dictionary, the Archiv ceased publication, and lexicographical work proceeded under the editorship of Osborn Bergin. The School of Irish Learning had been founded in 1903, and from then till its incorporation in the Royal Irish Academy it held summer courses in Irish and Welsh given by distinguished scholars from overseas. In addition, continuous instruction had been given by Osborn Bergin. When in 1910 Bergin was appointed to a chair in University College, Dublin he was succeeded in the School of Irish Learning by the Norwegian scholar Carl J. S. Marstrander who, at the early age of twenty-seven, had a wide acquaintance not only with Irish but also with a considerable range of other Indo-European languages. ... (Vorwort)

Potash and Perlmutter": Original drawing of the characters in this play, ink on board, signed lower right

n.p, ca. 1913 - In 1910 Montague Glass published Potash and Perlmutter, a collection of stories written in vernacular and dealing with two partners in the cloak- and-suit business. They were immensely popular, and led to a number of sequels and dramatizations, among them the one celebrated here in Raven Hill's lively and expressive drawing Leonard Raven Hill (1867-1942) was born in Bath and studied at the Lambeth School of Art, and in Paris with Bouguereau(1885-87). On his return he became a prolific contributor to various British publications. "Altogether", note Bryant and Heneage, "he was one of the most celebrated black and white artists of the period". In 1896 he joined Punch, an association which lasted 40 years, and ended only when his eyesight began to fail in 1935. "In his prime he was a fine strong draughtsman, good at portraying character and making the most of a wide range of jokes." This drawing shows Potash, and Perlmutter, surrounded by other characters in the play; it probably appeared in Punch around 1913 A SPLENDID THEATRICAL DRAWING BY A NOTABLE ARTIST 14 x 10-1/4 inches. . Fine condition. Bryant and Heneage, pp. 110-11.

        Arthur Rackham's Book of Pictures

London: William Heinemann, 1913. - With Forty-Four Mounted Color PlatesIncluding 'Cupid's Alley'RACKHAM, Arthur. Arthur Rackham's Book of Pictures. London: William Heinemann. n.d. [1913]. First trade edition. Quarto ( 10 1/4 x 7 5/8 in; 261 x 193 mm). 43, [1] pp. Forty-four color plates (including frontispiece) mounted on tan paper, with descriptive tissue guards, and ten drawings in black and white.Original gray green cloth pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt. Later (1918) printed dust jacket. Top edge stained gray. Small bump to fore edge of upper board otherwise A near fine copy, gilt bright with covers and spine unfaded. "Arthur Rackham's Book of Pictures brings together a number of drawings unrelated in theme. Most of them, it is true, are drawings of the supernatural, of goblins, elves and fairies, and many are based on actual fairy tales; but there are also delightful straightforward drawings of children at the seaside or in the Broad Walk, Kensington Gardens; there is also the well-known 'Cupid's Alley' [the original of which is in the Tate Gallery], which illustrates verses by Austin Dobson, and there are subject pictures and landscapes of wide variety. It was important that such a book should be drawn together by an introductory essay, and natural for Rackham to invite [J.M.] Barrie to write it. The answer he received was cordial but disappointing: '24 June 1913. Dear Rackham, I wish I could, but I have promised to write two introductions this autumn, and had better not undertake more. Added to which I would be very bad at it as I have no skill in criticism. I am very glad to hear of the book and look forward to it. You have no greater admirer than myself, and few there are more warmly indebted to you. 'Yours very sincerely J.M. Barrie'. Rackham was fortunate in obtaining Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch as a substitute for Barrie. 'Q' not only admired Rackham's work; he also thoroughly understood a child's instinctive longing for the imaginative and fanciful. 'To this instant, constant, intellectual need of childhood no one in our day,' he wrote, 'has ministered so bountifully or so whole-heartedly as Mr. Rackham.' And Quiller-Couch was happy, too, in associating the random, impressionistic nature of much of the Book of Pictures with 'the wayward visions that tease every true artist's mind, while he bends over the day's work'". (Derek Hudson. Arthur Rackham. His Life and Work, pp. 97-98).Latimore and Haskell, pp. 41-42. Riall, p. 118.

A very fine copy housed in the original pictorial dark green cardboard box.Vanity Fair: A Novel without a Hero is a novel by English author William Makepeace Thackeray, first published in 1847–48, satirizing society in early 19th-century Britain. The book's title comes from John Bunyan's allegorical story The Pilgrim's Progress, first published in 1678 and still widely read at the time of Thackeray's novel. In that work, "Vanity Fair" refers to a stop along the pilgrim's progress: a never-ending fair held in a town called Vanity, which is meant to represent man's sinful attachment to worldly things. The novel is now considered a classic, and has inspired several film adaptations. Lewis Christopher Edward Baumer (August 8, 1870 – October 25, 1963)[1] was an English caricaturist who worked for more than fifty years for the British magazine Punch. He illustrated or contributed illustrations to more than forty books between 1897 and 1936.

On the Quantum Theory of Radiation and the Structure of the Atom.[London: Taylor & Francis], 1915. First edition.

Author's presentation offprint, inscribed by Bohr to Prof. Biilmann, of this seminal paper in which Bohr introduced the concept of 'stationary state'. <br/><br/> Soon after the completion of Bohr's great trilogy on atomic constitution had appeared in November 1913, Moseley began to carry out experiments on X-ray spectra. Among other things, he found that the frequency of the K&alpha;-line followed a Balmer-type formula similar to those which had inspired Bohr to develop his theory of atomic structure. In this paper Bohr attempts an explanation of this formula, refuting Moseley's suggestion that the lines might be caused by several electrons jumping simultaneously (See Pais 182).<br/><br/> "Moseley was later killed in a war-related incident, a death that shocked Bohr and the entire scientific community.... coping with the calamity of his colleague's death and the constant pressures created by the war, Bohr had to frequently revise and refine his atomic model in light of new discoveries. One significant paper, 'On the Quantum Theory of Radiation and the Structure of the Atom,' added more specific details about atomic states. For example, Bohr had earlier made the argument that electrons could jump from one orbit to another as energy was emitted or absorbed. In this paper, he theorized that an atom possesses stationary states in which energy was neither emitted nor absorbed. Any emission or absorption that did occur, such as might induce an electron to jump, would correspond to the transition between two stationary states." (<br/><br/> "Franck and Hertz unwittingly provided an independent confirmation of the concept of stationary state. In 1914 they observed an energy threshold in the electron-stopping power of mercury vapor. This threshold, Bohr explained the following year [in the present paper], corresponded to a transition between the normal state and another (first excited) stationary state of the mercury atom (and not, as Franck and Hertz had originally thought, to the ionization of the atom)." ( Offprint from the Philosophical Magazine, vol. xxx, September 1915, pp. [i], 394-415 [1:blank], 8vo (222 x 145 mm), original printed orange wrappers, with inscription in Bohr's hand 'Hr. Prof. E. Biilmann // ærbødigst fra Forf.', with numbering to the upper left corner of the front wrapper, from the library of the Danish chemist Prof. Einar Biilmann (1873-1946)

On the Constitution of Atoms and Molecules, I-III.London: Taylor & Francis, 1913. First editions.

Extremely rare author's presentation offprints of his great trilogy, which constitutes the birth of modern atomic physics. "Bohr's three-part paper postulated the existence of stationary states of an atomic system whose behavior could be described using classical mechanics, while the transition of the system from one stationary state to another would represent a non-classical process accompanied by emission or absorption of one quantum of homogeneous radiation, the frequency of which was related to its energy by Planck's equation" (Norman).<br/><br/> In his previous paper ('On the Theory of Decrease of Velocity of Moving Electrified Particles on passing through Matter') Bohr had adopted Rutherford's nuclear model of the atom, and had become convinced that it was the peripheral electrons that determined the chemical properties of an element, whereas the nucleus determine the radioactive properties. However, Rutherford's model had an apparent explanatory problem: Why were the negatively charged electrons held away from the positive nucleus? In his doctoral dissertation on the electron theory of metals, Bohr had clarified the limitations of this theory, in particular its ability to explain magnetic properties, and he had shown how this arose from the classical nature of some of its foundations. Bohr strongly expected that the key to solving this problem was to be found in some way of introducing Planck's law of quantum action. <br/><br/> In the beginning of 1913 Bohr heard about Rydberg's remarkable discovery in spectroscopy. Rydberg's formula could represent the frequencies of the lines of the hydrogen spectrum in the simplest form in terms of two integers. As soon as Bohr saw this formula, he immediately recognized that it gave him the missing clue to the correct way to introduce Planck's law of quantum of action into the description of the atomic systems. The rest of the academic year was spent reconstructing the whole theory upon the new foundation and expounding it in a large treatise, which was immediately published as these three papers in the 'Philosophical Magazine'. It was in these papers that Bohr first gave his postulates of the orbital structure of the electrons and their quantized radiation. <br/><br/> Bohr's atomic theory inaugurated two of the most adventurous decades in the history of science. In 1922 Bohr was awarded the Nobel Prize "for his services in the investigation of the structure of atoms and of the radiation emanating from them".. Three parts. 8vo: (217 x 141 mm). Sewn in original orange wrappers; first and second parts blank, third printed (as issued), third part with printed title, front wrapper of part 1 nearly loose and front wrapper of part 2 starting. A fine, completely unrestored, and coherent set, all three with numbering to the upper left corner of the front wrappers, from the library of the Danish chemist Prof. Einar Biilmann (1873-1946)
