Kipling was one of the most popular writers in England, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Henry James said: Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius (as distinct from fine intelligence) that I have ever known. In 1907 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and to date he remains its youngest recipient. Among other honours, he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, all of which he declined. The Bombay edition was initially published in 20 volumes and limited to 1000 copies. Kipling continued to write and it eventually grew to 31 volumes, but the last 11 volumes were limited to 500 copies only. This collection is twenty-two volumes of the original twenty five limited to 1050. With water marks to the endpapers. Condition: In original publishers' half cloth bindings with paper covered boards. Somefoxing to the endpapers and textblock edge. Many leaves are uncut. Overall: VERY GOOD..

The Bakerian Lecture: Rays of Positive Electricity. In: Proceedings of the Royal Society, vol. A89, 1913, pp. 1-20. ---- <br><br> I+II: Norman 312+313, Leicester, pp. 54-65. - The key papers using x-rays as the device to study the structure of solids, particularly crystals - ultimately laying the foundation of molecular biology - and for which the Braggs received the Nobel Prize.<br> III: In 1913, as part of his exploration into the composition of canal rays, Thomson channelled a stream of ionized neon through a magnetic and an electric field and measured its deflection by placing a photographic plate in its path. Thomson observed two patches of light on the photographic plate, which suggested two different parabolas of deflection. Thomson concluded that neon is composed of atoms of two different atomic masses (neon-20 and neon-22), that is to say of two isotopes. This was the first evidence for isotopes of a stable element; Frederick Soddy had previously proposed the existence of isotopes to explain the decay of certain radioactive elements. Thomson&#39;s separation of neon isotopes by their mass was the first example of mass spectrometry, which was subsequently improved and developed into a general method by Thomson&#39;s student F. W. Aston and by A. J. Dempster. (Wikipedia)..

Two Books Extra-Illustrated by Bernarda Bryson as a Young Girl, ca. 1913

      - In one volume Bernarda Bryson Shahn has added a lengthy holograph note in ink, signed by her and dated 1995: "NOTE: this book was inscribed with my name.& decorated profusely by me in - as I figure it, 1913. It was found by Bert and Sally Kozma in 1995 - 82 years later.I read it - didn't remember it - but meanwhile I've also spent time in Egypt, stayed at the Mena House, taken a boat up the Nile, beheld the sunrise over the Temple at Luxor." The sketches include a number of likenesses and caricatures in profile, probably drawn from the young artist's imagination but quite accomplished and with full indication of the promise that would eventually reveal itself in her mature work. The drawings in the second volume, while generally cruder and lacking the ironclad provenance of those in the first, are similar enough in style and subject that we feel quite confident that they are also the work of young Miss Bryson. Of particular interest is a sketch on the rear endpaper illustrating a passage from Longfellow's "The Golden Legend" - it is quite fully finished (by a ten-year-old's standards) and suggests an affinity for book illustration which would in later years become Bernarda Bryson Shahn's primary focus. Two octavo volumes (a 1902 Longfellow Collected Poems and a ca. 1914 reprint of C.N. & A.M. Williamson's It Happened in Egypt) with extensive juvenile marginalia by Bernarda Bryson when about ten years of age. From the library of Ben and Bernarda Bryson Shahn, with estate labels tipped on at each front pastedown.

Recherches sur la constitution des spectres d'émission des éléments chimiques.Stockholm: P.A. Norstedt, 1890. First edition.

A fine copy, in original wrappers, of this seminal paper in which the Rydberg formula and Rydberg constant were first announced. Rydberg's formula was of fundamental importance to Niels Bohr's quantum theory of the atom (1913), providing Bohr the means of incorporatin the quantum of action into the theory of atomic construction.<br/><br/> "Rydberg's most significant scientific contributions were to spectroscopy: but his involvement with spectra had its origin in his interest in the periodic system of the elements, an interest that endured throughout his professional life. His earliest published papers in physics dealt with the periodic table. In the introduction to his major work on spectra (1890), he stated that he considered it only a part of a broader investigation, the goal of which was to achieve amore exact knowledge of the nature and constitution of the chemical and physical properties of the elements. He held that the effective force between atoms must be a periodic function of their atomic weights and that the periodic motions of the atoms, which presumably gave rise to the spectral lines and were dependment on the effective force, thus might be a fruitful study leading to a better knowledge of the mechanics, nature, and structure of atoms and molecules and to a deeper understanding of the periodic system of the other physical and chemical properties of the elements. In line with contemporary conceptions, Rydberg's view was that each individual line spectrum was the product of a single fundamental system of vibrations.<br/><br/> "His major spectral work, '<i>Recherches sur la constitution des spectres d'émission des éléments chimiques</i>' [the offered paper], published in 1890, mapped out Rydberg's total approach with remarkable clarity. He conceived of the spectrum of an element as composed of the superposition of three different types of series-one in which the lines were comparatively sharp, one in which the lines were more diffuse, and a third that he called principal series even though they consisted mostly of lines in the ultraviolet. The first lines were located in the visible spectrum and were usually the most intense. The members of each series might be single, double, triple, or of higher multiplicity. Any particular elementary spectrum might contain any number (even zero) of series of each of the basic types... <br/><br/> "Unlike most others, Rydberg used wave numbers (the number of waves per unit length) instead of a correlated reciprocal, the directly measured wavelengths. This enabled him to manipulate his final formula into a particularly useful form. <br/><br/> "Rydberg concluded that each series could be expressed approximately by an equation of the form<br/><br/> <i>n = n0 - N0 / (m+&my;) 2</i> <br/><br/> where <i>n</i> was the wave number of a line; <i> N0</i>= 109.721.6, a constant common to all series and to all elements; <i>n0</i> and <i>&my;</i> constants peculiar to the series: and <i>m</i> any positive integer (the number of the term). The lines of a series were generated by allowing <i>m</i> to take on integer values sequentially; <i> n0</i> defined the limit of the series that the wave number <i>n</i> approached when <i>m</i> became very large.<br/><br/> "Just when he became occupied with confirming this relationship, Rydberg learned about Balmer's formula, which represented the observed lines of the hydrogen spectrum with extraordinary accuracy. He arranged Balmer' formula into its wave number form and noted that, with appropriately selected constants, it was then a special form of his own more general formula. He felt that the success of Balmer's formula strengthened the justification of his own form. Thus encouraged, Rydberg proeeded to use the latter with sufficient success to propose it as the general formula for all series in all elementary line spectra, and to conclude that <i> N0</i> was indeed a universal constant, which has since become known as Rydberg's constant. <br/><br/> "Spectroscopy had been a major developed field of physical study for several decades, but its most pressing need near the end of the nineteenth century was for the organization of its vast amount of data into some mathematically ordered form that theoreticians might find useful in their attempts to understand the underlying significance of spectra. Rydberg's general formula was the most important presentation of this type. Many others groped in the same general direction, mostly with ephemeral results. Rydberg's most significant competitors in this regard were Heinrich Kayser and Carl Runge, but their general formulas were of significantly different form. <br/><br/> "The scope and structure of Rydberg's formula lowed him to note some important relationships. For example, he found not only that certain series with different values of µ exhibited the same value of n0 but also that the value of the constant term n0 in any series coincided with a member of the sequence of variable terms in some other series of the element. In particular, he discovered that the difference between the common limit of the diffuse and sharp series and the limit of the corresponding principal series gave the wave number of the common first-member term of the sharp and principal series, a relationship independently noted by Arthur Schuster and commonly known as the Rydberg-Schuster law." (DSB).. In: Kongl. Svenska Vetenskaps-Akademiens Handlingar, vol. 23, no. 11, the entire issue in original printed wrappers offered here. Large 4to (300 x 242 mm) pp. 155 and 4 large folding plates. Small tear and a little piece missing from the upper part of the spine strip, otherwise very fine and completely unmarked. Rare
