On the Quantum Theory of Radiation and the Structure of the Atom.[London: Taylor & Francis], 1915. First edition.

Author's presentation offprint, inscribed by Bohr to Prof. Biilmann, of this seminal paper in which Bohr introduced the concept of 'stationary state'.

Soon after the completion of Bohr's great trilogy on atomic constitution had appeared in November 1913, Moseley began to carry out experiments on X-ray spectra. Among other things, he found that the frequency of the Kα-line followed a Balmer-type formula similar to those which had inspired Bohr to develop his theory of atomic structure. In this paper Bohr attempts an explanation of this formula, refuting Moseley's suggestion that the lines might be caused by several electrons jumping simultaneously (See Pais 182).

"Moseley was later killed in a war-related incident, a death that shocked Bohr and the entire scientific community.... coping with the calamity of his colleague's death and the constant pressures created by the war, Bohr had to frequently revise and refine his atomic model in light of new discoveries. One significant paper, 'On the Quantum Theory of Radiation and the Structure of the Atom,' added more specific details about atomic states. For example, Bohr had earlier made the argument that electrons could jump from one orbit to another as energy was emitted or absorbed. In this paper, he theorized that an atom possesses stationary states in which energy was neither emitted nor absorbed. Any emission or absorption that did occur, such as might induce an electron to jump, would correspond to the transition between two stationary states." (http://www.sparknotes.com/biography/bohr/section4.rhtml)

"Franck and Hertz unwittingly provided an independent confirmation of the concept of stationary state. In 1914 they observed an energy threshold in the electron-stopping power of mercury vapor. This threshold, Bohr explained the following year [in the present paper], corresponded to a transition between the normal state and another (first excited) stationary state of the mercury atom (and not, as Franck and Hertz had originally thought, to the ionization of the atom)." (http://content.cdlib.org/xtf/view?docId=ft4t1nb2gv&chunk.id=d0e5922&toc.depth=1&toc.id=d0e5922&brand=eschol).. Offprint from the Philosophical Magazine, vol. xxx, September 1915, pp. [i], 394-415 [1:blank], 8vo (222 x 145 mm), original printed orange wrappers, with inscription in Bohr's hand 'Hr. Prof. E. Biilmann // ærbødigst fra Forf.', with numbering to the upper left corner of the front wrapper, from the library of the Danish chemist Prof. Einar Biilmann (1873-1946)

On the Constitution of Atoms and Molecules, I-III.London: Taylor & Francis, 1913. First editions.

Extremely rare author's presentation offprints of his great trilogy, which constitutes the birth of modern atomic physics. "Bohr's three-part paper postulated the existence of stationary states of an atomic system whose behavior could be described using classical mechanics, while the transition of the system from one stationary state to another would represent a non-classical process accompanied by emission or absorption of one quantum of homogeneous radiation, the frequency of which was related to its energy by Planck's equation" (Norman).

In his previous paper ('On the Theory of Decrease of Velocity of Moving Electrified Particles on passing through Matter') Bohr had adopted Rutherford's nuclear model of the atom, and had become convinced that it was the peripheral electrons that determined the chemical properties of an element, whereas the nucleus determine the radioactive properties. However, Rutherford's model had an apparent explanatory problem: Why were the negatively charged electrons held away from the positive nucleus? In his doctoral dissertation on the electron theory of metals, Bohr had clarified the limitations of this theory, in particular its ability to explain magnetic properties, and he had shown how this arose from the classical nature of some of its foundations. Bohr strongly expected that the key to solving this problem was to be found in some way of introducing Planck's law of quantum action.

In the beginning of 1913 Bohr heard about Rydberg's remarkable discovery in spectroscopy. Rydberg's formula could represent the frequencies of the lines of the hydrogen spectrum in the simplest form in terms of two integers. As soon as Bohr saw this formula, he immediately recognized that it gave him the missing clue to the correct way to introduce Planck's law of quantum of action into the description of the atomic systems. The rest of the academic year was spent reconstructing the whole theory upon the new foundation and expounding it in a large treatise, which was immediately published as these three papers in the 'Philosophical Magazine'. It was in these papers that Bohr first gave his postulates of the orbital structure of the electrons and their quantized radiation.

Bohr's atomic theory inaugurated two of the most adventurous decades in the history of science. In 1922 Bohr was awarded the Nobel Prize "for his services in the investigation of the structure of atoms and of the radiation emanating from them".. Three parts. 8vo: (217 x 141 mm). Sewn in original orange wrappers; first and second parts blank, third printed (as issued), third part with printed title, front wrapper of part 1 nearly loose and front wrapper of part 2 starting. First part inscribed in Bohr's hand 'Fra Forfatteren' (From the author), second and third part with his rubberstamp 'Fra Forfatteren'. A fine, completely unrestored, and coherent set, all three with numbering to the upper left corner of the front wrappers, from the library of the Danish chemist Prof. Einar Biilmann (1873-1946)

        Across Unknown South America.

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1913 - 2 volumes large octavo (245 × 180 mm) sumptuous Havana pebble-grained morocco publisher's presentation binding, title gilt to the spine and to the upper board together with the coats of arms of Chile, Argentina, Peru and Bolivia gilt, and that of Brazil placed centrally and rendered in colour in gilt, and silver with on-lays of blue and green morocco, all edges gilt, wide gilt foliate roll to the turn-ins, marbled endpapers. Slight shelf-wear, light scatter of foxing, else very good. Photogravure portrait frontispiece to volume I, and 170 other plates from photographs by the author, and a further 8 coloured coloured plates from his water-colours, one mounted as the frontispiece to volume II, full-page route map, and folding chart of the passage of the Arinos and Arinos-Juruena Rivers. First Edition, this a presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the first blank of vo lume I; "To Sir George Lewis, Bart. with sincere regards of Henry Savage-Landor, London Oct. 3 1918." Account of Savage-Landor's hair-raising exploits in South America, from Rio de Janeiro "he trekked inland into the Northern Mato Grosso in the company of an unruly band of porters who ditched his possessions and stole provisions whenever the opportunity arose. Several times they mutinied and demanded to be released from his employ, only to realize that alone they had no hope of finding their way home" (Howgego). Landor mapped the Rio Arinos, which he descended to the Rio Juruena, continuing to the Rio Tapajós, and entered the Amazon after a "harrowing journey" in which they were rescued from their sinking raft by a rubber planter on his annual excursion upriver. The party descended the Amazon to its mouth at Belém, then re-ascended the river to Peru, crossed the Andes to Lima, thence to Cusco and La Paz, and back to the Pacific at Antofagasta; "There he shipped to Valparaiso, crossed the Andes for the fourth time and made his way overland to Buenos Ayres. The total distance was reckoned by Landor to be 13,750 miles." Savage-Landor was one of the last explorers in the grand style; "Landor's want of training and his impatience to press on with all speed made him an unreliable surveyor, and there were those who impugned the veracity of his hair-raising escapes; but in energy and resourcefulness, in courage and power of endurance, he was the equal of any of the previous generation of great explorers. He scorned special equipment and commonly appeared on a mountain or in a jungle as he would in Bond Street. His contempt for ropes and nailed boots nearly cost him his life mountaineering on several occasions." (ODNB) A superb copy of this remarkable narrative. Howgego IV, L6 (C)

The Belief in Immortality and the Worship of the Dead - Complete in 3 volumes - all first editions

Macmillan, London 1913 - Rare, complete set. Volume 1 was published in 1913, vol 2 in 1922 and vol 3 in 1924. Because of the long period between the publication of each volume it is particularly hard to find a complete set of the true first edition first issues, such as here. Frazer (1854-1941) is often regarded as the father of modern anthropology. He posited that human belief progressed through 3 stages - primitive magic, replaced by religion, in turn replaced by science. Volume 1 details the belief among the aborigines of Australia, the Torres Straits Islands, New Guinea and Melanesia. Vol 2 details the belief among the Polynesians and vol 3 among the Micronesians. These volumes are in very good+ condition. The attractive, original, green hardback polished cloth bindings, with gilt titles on the spines, are in very good order, with only very minor wear and marks, very feint traces of old labels on lower spines and a little light fading. Small blank labels are attached to the backs of the title pages of vols 1 and 2, not obscuring any type. All 3 vols have an old armorial bookplate on the front blank end paper. All outer and inner hinges are very secure and tight, without cracking. The texts are in very good+, tight, clean condition, with NO foxing and only very light age-browning of the blank end pages. Over 1400 pages altogether, with a few adverts at rear for Frazer's other books. Size approx 9 x 6 inches. A heavy set which might require extra postage and insurance according to destination. A BOY'S WILL

London: David Nutt, 1913.. Printed wrappers. A couple of very faint smudges to upper wrapper, otherwise fine. Folding chemise and cloth slipcase. First edition of the author's first published book, second issue, binding D, with the four- petaled ornament on the upper wrapper, and the rubber stamp on the verso of page [4]. One of 135 numbered copies, signed by Frost. From the total first printing of ca. 1000 copies, 716 sets of sheets were imported after Nutt's bankruptcy by Dunster House for distribution in the U.S., of which this is an example. In 1943, Dunster House went out of business, and in its residuary inventory, 135 copies of the book in this binding remained. Herman Cohen, of Chiswick Book Shop, was handling the disposition of the stock, and arranged via Louis H. Cohen of House of Books to have Frost sign and number the copies. Considerations of having them specially bound (thus creating a fifth binding state) were discarded, and the 135 copies (of which this is #131) were distributed in their present form. CRANE A2.

        BUSINESS CYCLES

1913. Paperback. MITCHELL, Wesley Clair. BUSINESS CYCLES [MEMOIRS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, VOLUME 3]. Berkeley: University of California Press, 1913. First edition. xviii, 610 pp. 4to., Full green contemporary buckram with leather gilt stamped spine title lablels. Grey wrappers bound in. Moderate shelfwear. Ex-library with limited markings. There is some dampstaining along the edges of the last 80 page. Called by some a masterpiece. A truly comprehensive study at the time, which served as the standard reference for quantitative studies in economics. Blaug calls it "unique in its breadth and continuity." Mitchell's work proved all the more essential after the economy's sharp decline in the early 1920's. This work could be called a catalyst for intervention since economic fluctuations could be controlled substantially by government and banking/trade interests - such was the impact of Mitchell's work. Vie de Samuel Belet *

Librairie P.Ollendorff, Paris (1913).

PEACOCK PIE A BOOK OF RHYMES

London: Constable and Co., 1913.. Gilt blue buckram. Cloth dusty and a bit edgeworn, corners bumped, some offsetting to endsheets, else a good copy. With the book labels of Simon Nowell-Smith and his wife, Judith Adams Nowell-Smith. First edition. A fine association copy, inscribed by the author to Edward Marsh: "To E.M. with best wishes from W.d.l.M. June 1913." In response, Marsh wrote to de la Mare: "I've waited to write until I had time to read it twice and let it sink in. There are exquisite things in it, and no one else could have written them, or anything like them. 'Dick and the Moon' is perhaps the one that takes me most of all, another great favourite is 'The Little Green Orchard', and there are several others that run them close. 'The Ship of Rio' is delicious, and so is the one about the three farmers - - 'Axcusing Silver' is an inspiration! (There are some that I don't see quite enough point in . . . praps it's my fault?)." See EDWARD MARSH A BIOGRAPHY, by Christopher Hassall (London. 1959). NCBEL IV:258.
