The colors of the DJ front panel remain particularily strong. Both issues are in Good condition with toning, tears and each single sheet folded three times. The July 1st, 1910 issue has two photos of Jack London and carries his story and thoughts leading up to the championship match. This copy of The Abysmal Brute is in the "Variant binding...stamped in black and green", Ahearn, 054b. A prizefighting story likely inspired by the great Johnson-Jeffries boxing match (his June 27th, 1910 New York Herald article states "Fighter with the quality of the 'Abysmal brute' will win the great battle...") where London reported on the buildup to and championship fight between, Johnson and Jeffries for the Heavyweight Championship of the World in Reno, Nevada. Johnson was the first black man to win the coveted title and on this challenge, knocked Jefferies down three times in the fourteenth round before before his corner threw in the towel. The outcome of the fight triggered race riots that evening - the Fourth of July - all across the United States. The 1936 film "Conflict" is an American film based on The Abysmal Brute, staring John Wayne. Ref. Johnson p. 319; Sisson & Martens p. 70; Woodbridge, 109, 1000 & 1004; Wikipedia.

        MEN OF MARK

London / New York:: Duckworth & Co. / Mitchell Kennerley,, 1913. First Edition. Very Good++. Very Good++ hardback First Edition First Printing in the original quarter linen cloth covered board binding with gilt lettering front cover. Covers mildly soiled, owner inscription front paste down. Darkening endpapers due to laid in invitation. Complete with all 33 tipped-in photogravure plates produced under the direct supervision of the artist, each with tissue guard. The plate number and facsimile signature are on each photo mount. 4to. 30 pp., 33 tipped-in photographs. & The laid-in invitation (present and now in archival plastic holder) was to a 1912 exhibition at the Blanchard Gallery in Los Angeles of many of these photographs. The exhibition predates publication of the book. On that invitation the subjects are referred to as "men of genius". On page 29 of Coburn's introductory comments, he thanks Arnold Bennett for suggesting the more modest "Men of Mark". Six of the photographs, including Mr. Bennett's, were taken after the Los Angeles exhibition, prior to the suggested title for the volume. Hence Coburn's original appellation "men of genius" is on invitation. The photographs reflect a rather broad world view and include artists, writers and statesmen, among others. Henri Matisse, George Bernard Shaw, Mark Twain and Theodore Roosevelt are all represented. A Scarce classic work of photo-portraiture from the early twentieth century.

        O Pioneers !

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1913 Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1913. First Edition, unknown state [see description]. Octavo, 309 pp., frontispiece. Brown textured cloth with orange imprinting on cover and spine. Light shelfwear, very slight spine cock, penciled notes by a previous owner. Does not show the typical serious wear of spine imprint. Very Good Plus or better. An interesting state of the first edition of Cather's classic, O Pioneers! The cloth is brown and cross textured, but the period after the "O" in "CO" at spine bottom does touch the "O". The states of the first edition seem to be beset with a degree of uncertainty, and mixed-state copies are not uncommon. The true first printing of June, 1913, numbered only 2,000 copies. All states of that printing can be identified by the misprint "chince bugs" [page 60] which was thereafter corrected to "chinch bugs". This copy is one of those 2,000. Partly based on her Nebraska childhood, O Pioneers! reflects Cather's belief in the primacy of spiritual and moral values over the purely material. The title is taken from Walt Whitman's Pioneers! O Pioneers !, which shared these American spiritual ideals. A sharp copy, with almost none of the typical fading of the orange imprinting. L21

[Harrington Emerson's home course of study in personal efficiency.]

[ New York ]: No Place ; N. P., 1913. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to., pp. [ff 26] + 638 (hand stamped numerals); ox blood half calf and black pebbled cloth gilt; boards lightly scuffed and soiled; marbled endpapers; clean text sheets; pp. 285-288 detached but present; a good copy overall. Edition unknown. Typescript of a personal study guide in 24 parts, ostensibly devoted to increasing personal efficiency by creating goals, the use of meticulous planning, careful observation, standardizing operations, and time management. The author develops a number of "principles of efficiency, " illustrating each in detail. But Emerson goes much farther than simply offering a plan for self-improvement. He dives into all manner of psychology and behavior and recommends many types of physical and mental exercises, relationships, and ideals. The final goal of the program seems hardly less than the entire make over and management of the human personality. One of the more remarkable men of the post-Civil War era in America, Harrington Emerson (1853-1931) was born into a wealthy New Jersey family and educated on the Continent. He began his adult life as an instructor of modern languages at the University of Nebraska, but was dismissed in part due to profound differences in educational philosophy with the school's administrators. He later embarked on a career as a frontier banker and land speculator, and worked as well for major rail concerns in Nebraska, Kansas, & Colorado. He invested in land as the plains became a popular destination for immigrants, but drought and crop failures bankrupted him. He next found employment as a representative of an English investment syndicate, and in this position studied more than one hundred American mining and manufacturing companies as investment possibilities. In this job he first became acquainted with the way that large industrial concerns are organized and operated, which laid the basis for his career as an efficiency expert. He combined this knowledge with further studies and work in mechanical engineering, and became involved and financially indebted in a scheme to lay a trans-Pacific telegraph cable which nearly bankrupted him a second time. After that failure, Emerson worked for a time as an industrial consultant, before resolving to take up efficiency engineering as his primary career. In this he followed the pioneering work of Frederick W. Taylor, whose methods of labor organization had come to the attention of Henry Ford, among others. Emerson on the other hand was hired to reorganize the machine and locomotive repair shops for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad. There, over the course of three years, he developed standardized work procedures and implemented a bonus pay system. His reputation as an expert in labor efficiency won him a large clientele. Between 1907 and 1910, he performed consulting work for over 200 companies, from industrial concerns to retailers, hospitals, municipal governments and colleges. He later performed much of his work overseas for foreign governments, including China, Japan, Mexico, Poland and especially the Soviet Union, where Emerson was particularly optimistic for the future of "scientific management." Throughout his later life, Emerson saw himself as a promoter and educator for greater efficiency, for firms and individuals alike. In 1924, he re-wrote and marketed an earlier version of a correspondence course in personal efficiency. Under the direction of the Emerson Institute, his home study course garnered more than 40,000 subscribers in 1925 alone. Scarce in trade. WorldCat locates less than 15 copies. Hardcover.

        Scott's Last Expedition

London: Smith Elder & Co., 1913. Two volumes, large octavo, extensively illustrated including a frontispiece in each volume, six photogravures and 18 coloured plates, many full-page black & white plates, maps, diagrams, and a panorama; some maps with folds reinforced, a fine copy, in contemporary quarter morocco. Signed by two survivors of the Scott expedition. An excellent association copy signed by two of the surviving expeditioners. This is the first edition of the famous official expedition account, arranged from Scott's journals which were retrieved when his tent was discovered in 1912. This set is signed by Lieutenant-Surgeon G. Murray Levick in both volumes, and by Lieutenant Edward R.G.R. Evans, second-in-command on the Terra Nova, in the first: Murray Levick joined Scott's final expedition as surgeon and was second in command of the Northern Party, carrying out extensive studies on birds and marine life. Scott's achievement in reaching the South Pole on January 18, 1912, is inextricably linked with the sense of heartbreak at having been beaten to the Pole by Amundsen by just thirty-four days, and the disastrous return journey in which Scott, Evans, Oates, Bowers, and Wilson all perished. Scott wrote in a letter composed to his wife, "but for my own sake I do not regret this journey, which has shown that Englishmen can endure hardships, help one another, and meet death with as great a fortitude as ever in the past. We took risks, we knew we took them; things have come out against us, and therefore we have no cause for complaint, but bow to the will of providence, determined still to do our best to the last… Had we lived, I should have had a tale to tell of the hardihood, endurance, and courage of my companions which would have stirred the heart of every Englishman. These rough notes and our dead bodies must tell the tale…". Each volume is inscribed on the front free end-paper: "Presented to / The Grundy Library/ Malvern College/ by G.C. Levick (No. 8)/ Nov. 1913

Christus gewidmet. Erster Deutscher Herbstsalon. Berlin / Potsdamerstr. 75.

Der Sturm,, Berlin, 1913 - Berlin, Der Sturm, o. J. [1913]. Orig. Ansichtskarte [9,1 x 14 cm]. Die Karte ist nicht gelaufen. Hds. Text beidseitig, leichte Gbrsp. April 1912 in seiner Galerie „Der Sturm" eröffnet hatte. In der Nachwirkung der Futuristen-Ausstellung und im Vorfeld des Herbstsalons hatte sogar das Preußische Abgeordnetenhaus am 12. April 1913 über Kunst debattiert. (Zitat) Deutsch Orig. Ansichtskarte [9,1 x 14 cm].

The high-frequency spectra of the elements. In Phil. Mag. 26, no. 156 & 27, no. 160

      , 1913-14. 1913-14.
Moseley’s Law in X-Ray Spectra

Moseley, Henry G. J. (1887-1915). The high-frequency spectra of the elements. In: Philosophical Magazine, sixth series, 26 (1913): 1024-34; 27 (1914): 703-13. 1 plate. The complete nos. 156 & 160, 8vo. London: Taylor & Francis, 1913-14. 226 x 147 mm., first number uncut & unopened. Original printed wrappers, advertising circular laid into second number. Very fine.

First Edition. Moseley’s outstanding contribution to physics was the justification from physical laws of the previous empirical and chemical concept of the atomic number. This stemmed from his development of Moseley’s Law concerning the characteristic x-rays that are emitted by atoms published in his paper of 1913. “It is historically important in quantitatively justifying the conception of the nuclear model of the atom, with all, or nearly all, positive charges of the atom located in the nucleus, and associated on an integer basis with atomic number. Until Moseley’s work, ‘atomic number’ was merely an element’s place in the periodic table, and was not known to be associated with any measureable physical quantity. Moseley was able to show that the frequencies of certain characteristic X-rays emitted from chemical elements are proportional to the square of a number which was close to the element’s atomic number; a finding which supported van den Broek and Bohr’s model of the atom in which the atomic number is the same as the number of positive charges in the nucleus of the atom” (Wikipedia article on Moseley’s Law, accessed 07-10-2011).

In 1913 Moseley, a member of Rutherford’s Manchester Institute, set out to test the doctrine of atomic number by mapping the characteristic K and L spectra of the elements. Using a modification of the x-ray spectroscopy techniques developed by the Braggs, Moseley “obtained the principal lines of the x-ray spectra of most elements by registering their ionization and photographic images. In November of that year he reported his results to Bohr as confirming the new theory of atomic constitutions and being ‘extremely simple.’ . . . He also succeeded in correcting the sequence of transition elements to be Fe-Co-Ni according to increasing ‘atomic number’ Z (rather than to their atomic weight A). That is, the neutral nickel atom possessed a higher nuclear charge and one electron more than the neutral cobalt atom, despite the fact that it had a smaller atomic weight” (Twentieth Century Physics I, pp. 158-59).

When World War I broke out Moseley left his research work at the University of Oxford to volunteer for the Royal Engineers of the British Army. He was assigned as a telecommunications officer to the fighting force that invaded the region of Gallipoli, Turkey, in April 1915. On August 10, 1915, during the Battle of Gallipoli, Moseley was shot and killed at the age of 27. Some prominent authorities have speculated that Moseley would have been deserving of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1916— which went unawarded—had he not died the previous year.
