seder Hagada shel Pesa¿ : Gebete für den häuslichen Gottesdienst am ersten und zweiten Abende des Pessachfestes. Mit acht Illustrationen. Zeiundzwanzigste verbesserte Auflage.

Publisher: Jakob B. Brandeis. Richard Brandeis Press, Prague und Breslaue 1913 - Yudlov 2587. German and Hebrew in parallel columns on each page. The gilt image on the front cover is of the Neue Synagogue that stood on Oranienburger Strasse, Berlin. The Neue Synagoge ("New Synagogue") was built 1859¿1866 as the main synagogue of the Berlin Jewish community, on Oranienburger Straße. Because of its splendid eastern Moorish style and resemblance to the Alhambra, it is an important architectural monument of the second half of the 19th century in Berlin. The building was designed by Eduard Knoblauch. Following Knoblauch's death in 1865, Friedrich August Stüler took responsibility for the majority of its construction as well as for its interior arrangement and design. It was inaugurated in the presence of Count Otto von Bismarck, then Minister President of Prussia, in 1866. One of the few synagogues to survive Kristallnacht, it was badly damaged prior to and during World War II and subsequently much was demolished; the present building on the site is a reconstruction of the ruined street frontage with its entrance, dome and towers, and only a few rooms behind. It is truncated before the point where the main hall of the synagogue began. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

LOHENGRIN Illustrated By Willy Pogany (Very Fine Copy in Near Fine Original Pictorial Slipcase)

Harrap, 1913. Harrap, 1913. POGANY, WILLY (Illustrator). THE TALE OF LOHENGRIN: Knight of the Swan. Adapted from the work of Richard Wagner as interpreted by T.W. Rolleston. London: Harrap, [no date, but 1913]. First Trade Edition. 4to. Stunning FINE copy in super ornate original publisher's brown cloth, gilt. Still housed in its original publisher's pictorial slipcase with original paper label. Large and impressive volume which, having been protected by the box, looks almost new. There is just a tiny bit of abrasion to one little spot on the lower cover, hardly worth mentioning. One of Pogany's greatest accomplishments with every element of the book design done to his visionary standards. There are 8 tipped-in color plates, many astonishing full page black & white lithographs, loads of other original design details, all printed to remarkable effect on heavy gray paper. Both the paper used for the text and the paper used for the slipcase are exceeding prone to wear; this is just a superlative example. . First Trade Edition. Decorative Cloth.         Scenes de la Boheme

Lyon - H. Lardanchet, 1913. Lyon - H. Lardanchet, 1913 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A smart copy of Louis-Henry Murger's seminal work, Scenes de la Boheme. Although it is commonly called a novel, it doesn't follow a standard novel form. Rather, it is a collection of loosely related stories, all set in the Latin Quarter of Paris in the 1840s, romanticizing bohemian life in a playful way. Most of the stories were originally published individually in a local literary magazine, Le Corsaire. Many of them were semi-autobiographical, featuring characters based on actual individuals who would have been familiar to some of the magazine's readers. In French. Number 824 of 1,000 limited copies. With binder's stamp of Flammarion Vaillant to verso of front free-endpaper, and booksellers' label of Henry Southeran. Condition: In a half-morocco binding with marbled boards. Externally very smart. Internally firmly bound. Pages are mainly bright and clean, save for some foxing to the first and last few pages. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

The Belief in Immortalityand the Worship of the Dead

London - Macmillan and Co., 1913. London - Macmillan and Co., 1913 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A bright, clean first edition of The Belief in Immortality by Sir James George Frazer. Bound in cloth. Thisedition is the July 1913 Reprint. Sir James George Frazer, 1854 1941, was a Scottish social anthropologist influential in the early stages of the modern studies of mythology and comparative religion. Frazer posited that human belief progressed through three stages: primitive magic, replaced by religion, in turn replaced by science. He studied at the University of Glasgow and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated with honours in Classics and remained a Classics Fellow all his life. He was knighted in 1914 . The study of myth and religion became his areas of expertise. Except for Italy and Greece, Frazer was not widely travelled, so his prime sources of data were ancient histories and questionnaires mailed to missionaries and Imperial officials all over the globe. Frazer's interest in social anthropology was aroused by reading E. B. Tylor's Primitive Culture and encouraged by his friend, the biblical scholar William Robertson Smith. Frazer was far from being the first to study religions dispassionately, as a cultural phenomenon rather than from within theology. He was, though, the first to detail the relations between myths and rituals. Condition: The binding is tght and firm. There is very mild wear to the extremities, includingvery mildbumping. Internally the pages are bright and generally clean, with some mild spotting to the endpapers. Overall the condition is very good..
