        CHANCE

, 1913. 1913. [the 1913 pre-publication state] A Tale in Two Parts. Garden City NY: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1913. Original dark blue cloth with vignette in gilt. First American Edition, first printing, pre-publication state (with the title page dated 1913). In October 1913 Doubleday Page issued about 150 copies dated 1913, before Methuen advised them that the book could not be published until 1914 (due to the binder's strike in England -- Methuen had allowed only about 51 English copies dated 1913 to reach the public). These 150 American copies have been characterized as a "copyright issue," but Cagle asserts that that is erroneous, and that they more likely were advance review copies. In any event, the rest of the first printing, not yet bound, was equipped with new preliminary pages dated 1914 and was not issued until March 1914.~This is a fine copy; loosely inserted is a color-pictorial "Six Big Books for 1913" DP&Co promotional flyer. Although the 51 Methuen copies now sell for about $5,000.00 when they surface on the market, these American copies are in our opinion just as scarce. Cagle A17b(1).

seder Hagada shel Pesa¿ : Gebete für den häuslichen Gottesdienst am ersten und zweiten Abende des Pessachfestes. Mit acht Illustrationen. Zeiundzwanzigste verbesserte Auflage.

Publisher: Jakob B. Brandeis. Richard Brandeis Press, Prague und Breslaue 1913 - Yudlov 2587. German and Hebrew in parallel columns on each page. The gilt image on the front cover is of the Neue Synagogue that stood on Oranienburger Strasse, Berlin. The Neue Synagoge ("New Synagogue") was built 1859¿1866 as the main synagogue of the Berlin Jewish community, on Oranienburger Straße. Because of its splendid eastern Moorish style and resemblance to the Alhambra, it is an important architectural monument of the second half of the 19th century in Berlin. The building was designed by Eduard Knoblauch. Following Knoblauch's death in 1865, Friedrich August Stüler took responsibility for the majority of its construction as well as for its interior arrangement and design. It was inaugurated in the presence of Count Otto von Bismarck, then Minister President of Prussia, in 1866. One of the few synagogues to survive Kristallnacht, it was badly damaged prior to and during World War II and subsequently much was demolished; the present building on the site is a reconstruction of the ruined street frontage with its entrance, dome and towers, and only a few rooms behind. It is truncated before the point where the main hall of the synagogue began. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Bordighera, 20. III. 1913.. 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Kl.-4to.

LOHENGRIN Illustrated By Willy Pogany (Very Fine Copy in Near Fine Original Pictorial Slipcase)

Harrap, 1913. Harrap, 1913. POGANY, WILLY (Illustrator). THE TALE OF LOHENGRIN: Knight of the Swan. Adapted from the work of Richard Wagner as interpreted by T.W. Rolleston. London: Harrap, [no date, but 1913]. First Trade Edition. 4to. Stunning FINE copy in super ornate original publisher's brown cloth, gilt. Still housed in its original publisher's pictorial slipcase with original paper label. Large and impressive volume which, having been protected by the box, looks almost new. There is just a tiny bit of abrasion to one little spot on the lower cover, hardly worth mentioning. One of Pogany's greatest accomplishments with every element of the book design done to his visionary standards. There are 8 tipped-in color plates, many astonishing full page black & white lithographs, loads of other original design details, all printed to remarkable effect on heavy gray paper. Both the paper used for the text and the paper used for the slipcase are exceeding prone to wear; this is just a superlative example. . First Trade Edition. Decorative Cloth. Fine/Fine Publisher's Box. Illus. by Willy Pogany.
