Nine nice original letters to the Massachusetts Senator Clarence W. Hobbs, Jr

, 1913-1919 1913-1919. Several of the letters are browned at the extremities but the majority are very well preserved. . The first is dated Nov 21, 1913, and the last is dated July 7, 1918 [three are undated]. All are 8-1/2 x 11. The first letter "Your letter of November 13th has just reached me here, although I asked them to send my mail right up from the Adams House. Perhaps you may have thought it strange I did not reply to it" is somewhat browned and chipped at the top and right hand side [with some loss, although not affecting the text]. The second [39 words] and third [71 words] are from 1914. The fourth is from 1918 [112 words]. The fifth [170 words] and sixth [271] are from 1919. The seventh [72 words], eighth [24 words], and ninth [65 words], are undated but presumably the seventh and eighth are from 1914 or so as they are on Massachusetts Senate stationery and the ninth is presumably from 1918 as it is on Lieutenant Governor stationery.

THE PASSIONATE FRIENDS: A NOVEL Presentation to G. B. Shaw

London: MacMillan, 1913 The [GB] Shaw Copy. First edition, first issue with all the correct points. A fine copy in the publisher's patterned sage green cloth, stamped in gilt and blind. [very minor offsetting to the endpapers & a small stain at the outside bottom of the front pastedown - still a remarkable fresh copy & an extraordinary example, Inscribed by Wells with a flourish for Charlotte Shaw & George Bernard Shaw through her with good humored advice as follows: "Mrs. Shaw / with warm regards / HGW / and do make GBS try a novel" - The inscription in rebuttal to Shaw having earlier admonished Wells to try writing a play. Green calf clamshell protective presentation case, gilt decorated & lettered at the spine. THE PASSIONATE FRIENDS was produced as a movie by Stoll in 1923, again by David Lean in 1948 (script by Eric Ambler), & again by Paramount in 1952. Wells Soc. 51; Hammond A9. "Bernard Shaw and H. G. Wells were both dedicated to reshaping the world: as Shaw commented in one letter to Wells, " The first volume of [Karl Marx's] Capital (all I ever read of it) changed the mind of Europe; a thing we two have been trying to do all our lives." 1 Although (apart from some satiric fantasies) Back to Methuselah is Shaw's only direct attempt to picture what this change might mean, H. G. Wells was very much in the futures business with almost a third of his voluminous writings being explorations from the present into visionary alternatives. Titles like The World Set Free or Men Like Gods offer much the same ecstatic hope for change as Shaw's "metabiological Pentateuch"; and a comparison between the ways in which each envisaged the future is illuminating. It encapsulates the extremes of the turn-of-the century revolutionary movement in which they were both involved, as well as throwing the nature of Shaw's beliefs into high relief by the contrast. The links between the two writers, both of whom aspired to be the intellectual leader of the new century, are well known: their common membership in the Fabian Society, and the Wells forced resignation after publicizing the scandal of his affair with Amber Reeves (at that time the secretary of the Society) in his novel Ann Veronica, their extensive correspondence from at least 1901 right up to just three days before Wells' death in 1946, which shows that each read the other's work, even sending drafts of some pieces to one another. What has not been as fully realized is the degree to which both Wells' novels and Shaw's plays were written as direct responses to each other's work. There are enough overlaps or cross-references to qualify several of their works as a serious literary conversation, and significantly, the subject of their artistic argument was specifically their idea of the perfect society, and the means through which it might be." - Innes, C. D. "Utopian Apocalypses: Shaw, War, and H. G. Wells" SHAW The Annual of Bernard Shaw Studies - Volume 23, 2003, pp. 37-46, Penn State University Press. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.

Hammersmith: Doves Press, 1913. ONE OF 200 COPIES on paper (and 12 on vellum) n. Hardcover. 238 x 165 mm (9 3/8 x 6 1/2"). 111, [5] pp. ONE OF 200 COPIES on paper (and 12 on vellum). Pleasing dark blue crushed morocco in the style of the Doves Bindery, covers with gilt-ruled borders and strapwork frame, gilt titling and date on upper cover, raised bands, spine compartments ruled in gilt, vertical gilt titling in two compartments, turn-ins gilt ruled, all edges gilt and gauffered with two rows of tiny dots. In a matching blue morocco-lipped slipcase. Tidcombe DP-32. For the binding: Tidcombe "Doves Bindery," p. 465. Except for the usual faint offsetting from turn-ins, A GORGEOUS COPY, even without the usual fading to the spine, and with no signs of use internally. This is one of the 26 intriguing (and obviously uncommon) examples Tidcombe has identified as imitation Doves bindings, a group of handsomely executed volumes that continue to be mysterious. Tidcombe actually pictures this volume in Appendix III in her "The Doves Bindery" on page 463 (and describes it on page 465). The same design was used for a copy of Milton's "Areopagitica" (Tidcombe 812). She differentiates between forgeries (those books that are stamp-signed with "C - S" and a date) on the one hand and unsigned "copies of Doves bindings or bindings in the Doves style" on the other. But she treats them as one group "because they have several features in common." For example, signed or unsigned, all of the suspect bindings cover Doves Press books, all are bound in dark blue morocco, and all have green silk double headbands with a visible red core. Tidcombe speculates that these bindings might have been executed between 1936 and 1938, and she observes that "the finishing on most of these bindings [as here] is of a very high standard." She also notes that the expert nature of the work on the covers is not matched by the typically less adroit stamp-signed signature, which she conjectures may have been added in the signed examples by another hand after the fact. Although Tidcombe suggests that the person responsible for the forged Doves bindings could possibly have been the former Doves Bindery finisher Charles McLeish, she does not settle on him or any other likely candidate. Whoever was behind them, the volumes in this puzzling group of bindings--like other forgeries and imitations of historically important cultural artifacts--are actively collected for their value as counterfeits. The dramatization of the assassination of the Roman emperor Julius Caesar and the defeat of the conspirators, Brutus and Cassius, at the Battle of Philippi, "Julius Caesar" is one of four plays by Shakespeare that were printed at Doves Press (the others are "Coriolanus," "Anthony and Cleopatra," and "Hamlet"). For the Doves edition, the text of the First Folio of 1623 was followed, with 44 minor emendations, which are set out on slightly more than three pages following the end of the play.

Panurge. [Subtitle]: Haulte farce musicale en 3 actes de MM. Georges Spitzmüller et Maurice Boukay. [Music by Massenet].

[Printed by J. Minot] [1913], [Paris] - "Panurge, which should have been a popular farce in the lineage of Cendrillon and Don Quichotte, never achieved any success despite the usual masterly timing which Massenet deploys. The adventures and misunderstandings of Panurge and his wife Colombe make excellent operatic comedy. But perhaps the grossièreté of Rabelais is more literary than theatrical. In truth this final endearing comedy, which had to compete for attention with such novelties as Le sacre du printemps when it was first performed, has never been put to a fair test on the stage." Hugh Macdonald et al in Grove onlineA striking image of the rogue Panurge, sung by Vanni Marcoux, created for the premiere of the opera at the Théâtre de la Gaîté on April 25, 1913. "The artist Léandre (1862-1934), born in Normandy, began his career in Paris painting decorative pictures for hotels, then studied at the Beaux-Arts with Cabanel. [He] was known for his caricatures, many of which he drew for the periodical Le Rire. A street in Montmartre bears his name and a statue of him was erected in Paris after his death."         Mr Fleight

Howard Latimer, London 1913 - Printing history opposite the titlepage records that the first printing was on April 30th 1913 with this, the second impression, printed on 19th May 1913. This copy was offered for sale by P.Rosier, Bookseller of Swansea and Wales, according to the bookseller's ticket in the bottom left hand corner of the front pastedown, just visible by turning back the corner of the front free endpaper. The front free endpaper was glued to the front pastedown at, or about, the time of publication and the titlepage bears the contemporary rubber stamp of an agent for 'Premier Files, 18 High Street, Cardigan'. The same rubber stamp appears on the rear paste down. The original binding is rubbed and slightly marked, particularly to the top edge of the rear board but the gilt title and author blocked on the top board is bright. There is some light foxing to the front and rear leaves with a penciled name on the half-title otherwise this is a firm, clean copy. The second impression is rarer than the first impression and, given the circumstances of this book's first appearance in print, as described in Harvey's bibliography (A39) , this impression with its apparent association raises an interesting point.
