        Sons and Lovers.

London: Duckworth & Co., 1913 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to front board and spine. With the dust jacket. A stunning copy in the exceedingly rare dust jacket. First edition, first impression, the book with the points as called for by Roberts: the title dated and on a cancel, 20pp of ads at the end, and dark blue cloth. There are two known variants of the dust jacket: one has an anonymous blurb composed by the author, is typographic, bears a price, and is very much in the style of Duckworth's post 1913 jackets. The other variant, the present, is identical in format to Lawrence's Love Poems put out by the same firm in February 1913, printed in blue on a linen-effect paper. Notably it has no price, no blurb, and nothing printed on it other than a repeat of what is stamped on the cloth binding beneath. This is in keeping with all examples of pre-1913 Duckworth jackets that we have been able to examine. Roberts does not assign priority to either of the two states. Some booksellers have argued that the priced jacket has priority, but in our opinion the fact that the present example replicates the earlier style suggests the contrary. The design of the jacket was the subject of prolonged debate. Lawrence had wanted Ernest Collings to provide an illustration of collieries for it, but on 13 May he wrote to Collings to apologise, saying that he had just learnt that Duckworth thought a colliery illustration "unsuitable". As this was perilously close to the publication date of 29 May, it suggests that Duckworth may well have produced a first jacket on the earlier model of Love Poems, while waiting for the reluctant author to supply a blurb for a second, more elaborate version. However that may be, the present copy is straightforwardly the finest known example of Son and Lovers extant.

[Archive]: 18 Real Photo Postcards of the West Side Camping Club in Guard, Maryland

Guard, Maryland: West Side Camping Club. 1913-1914. 18 sepia-toned real photo postcards. Some modest fading to a few of the cards, a few have been mailed, overall near fine. A splendid group of photographs of a bunch of cheerful knuckleheads at a private hunting club in Guard, Maryland, where apparently, according to a 1914 Forest and Stream article, they specialized in hunting (and occasionally eating) groundhogs. The images feature about 20 prosperous but casually dressed white men in a tent encampment with a cook shed emblazoned with the letters W.S.C.C. and various semi-humorous signs, and manned by a black cook in white chef's outfit. In one image, one gentleman on the left pretends to play a frying pan like a banjo, while on the right another gentleman pretends to shave the neck of a sleeping man with a hand scythe, while the cook stands in the middle with knife and frying pan, looking not terribly amused. In other images the various men lounge around camp, and in a series of four images, a group of hunting dogs attack what appears to be a groundhog pelt. The few that are postmarked are postmarked in August of either 1913 or 1914, all from Guard, Maryland (about which we can find nothing!) .

        A Boy's Will

London: David Nutt, 1913. First edition. First edition, first issue, first binding, of Frost's first published book. Original bronze pebble grain cloth, lettered in gilt, a few spots of foxing, but an excellent, bright copy. Crane A2. The poet Frank S. Flint's review copy, with the publisher's circular "compliments" stamp on the title page, Frost's very rare calling card from State Normal School, Plymouth, N.H., where he taught during 1911-1912,and which he must have given to Flint on their meeting, is loosely inserted. Flint has annotated the contents page with lines, crosses, and circles, calling attention to various poems. Frost first met the poet F.S. Flint at the opening of Harold Monro's Poetry Book Shop on January 8, 1913, while he was awaiting Nutt's publication of "A Boy's Will," where Frost bought a copy of Flint's In the Net of the Stars, and where Flint promised to review Frost's forthcoming work. It was Flint who at this same party first mentioned Ezra Pound to Frost, and he would arrange their meeting. Lawrance Thompson speaks of this party as "the first concrete step in RF's very deliberate campaign of self-advancement," and Stanley Burnshaw quotes Frost': 'People think it was Pound who discovered me. It was Frank Flint ... someone I'll never forget,'" Stanley Burnshaw, Robert Frost Himself, N.Y., 1986, p. 94. Flint's friendly review of A Boy's Will appeared in the September 1913 issue of Monro's Poetry and Drama. Thompson, Robert Frost The Early Years, pp. 406-425, passim.
