Typhoon: A Play in Four Acts

Methuen and Co., London 1913 - First English edition. Translated by Laurence Irving. Foxing to the foredge, near fine in near fine pictorial dustwrapper with a couple of tiny nicks and tears. Inscribed by the translator: "Ralph Leach with the best wishes of Laurence Irving." A play by a Hungarian author that starred Laurence Irving himself, alongside a young Claude Rains, in its 1913 London debut. It was the basis for at least three films, including a 1914 U.S. version directed by Reginald Barker and featuring Sessue Hayakawa, Gladys Brockwell, and Frank Borzage. Many of Lengyel's stories and plays were filmed, most notably *Ninotchka* and *To Be or Not To Be*. Very scarce in jacket, and doubly scarce signed by the translator and star Irving -- he drowned in the horrific sinking of the *RMS Empress* in 1914. See this book in 3D on our site. After attending college, he moved to London to become a writer, but, in menial work, became addicted to opium, and was a street vagrant for years. A married couple read his poetry and rescued him, publishing his first book Poems in 1893. Thompson lived as an unbalanced invalid in Wales and at Storrington, but wrote three books of poetry, with other works and essays, before dying of tuberculosis in 1907. Thompson attempted suicide in his nadir of despair, but was saved from completing the action through a vision which he believed to be that of a youthful poet Thomas Chatterton, who had committed suicide almost a century earlier. A prostitute - whose identity Thompson never revealed - befriended him, gave him lodgings and shared her income with him. Thompson was later to describe her in his poetry as his saviour. She soon disappeared, however, never to return, in his estimation because she feared she would taint his growing reputation. In 1888, he had been 'discovered' after sending his poetry to the magazine Merrie England. He had been sought out by the editors of 'Merrie England', Wilfrid and Alice Meynell. Recognizing the value of his work, the couple gave him a home and arranged for publication of his first book Poems in 1893. The book attracted the attention of sympathetic critics in the St James's Gazette and other newspapers, and Coventry Patmore wrote a eulogistic notice in the Fortnightly Review of January 1894.His most famous poem, The Hound of Heaven, describes the pursuit of the human soul by God. This poem is the source of the phrase "with all deliberate speed," used by the Supreme Court in Brown II, the remedy phase of the famous decision on school desegregation. A phrase in his The Kingdom of God is the source of the title of Han Suyin's novel and the movie Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing. In addition, Thompson wrote the most famous cricket poem, the nostalgic At Lord's. He also wrote Sister Songs (1895), New Poems (1897), and a posthumously published essay, "Shelley" (1909). He wrote a treatise On Health and Holiness, dealing with the ascetic life, which was published in 1905.Condition:Conditions are Good+/Very Good.  Some wear to edges, few scratches to mid front of one, few darken marks to another, small inscription, pages/hinges/text blocks are very good/excellent for 102 years old!!!

Eine statistische Methode zur Bestimmung einiger Eigenschaften des Atoms und ihre Anwendung auf die Theorie des periodischen Systems der Elemente.Berlin: Julius Springer, 1928. First edition.

A fine copy, from the library of Niels Bohr, of Fermi's statistical approach to the determination of atomic structure. The association is particularly appropriate since Bohr had inaugurated the quantum-theoretical approach to atomic structure in 1913. Fermi's approach was developed independently and simultaneously by Llewellyn Thomas, and is now known as the 'Thomas-Fermi model.' The Thomas-Fermi model has found modern applications in many fields through its ability to extract qualitative trends analytically and the ease with which the model can be solved.<br/><br/> "During the years 1926-1932 Fermi and his associates did first-class but conventional theoretical physics, within the pattern laid down by the physicists of northern Europe. These were the concluding years of the theory of atomic structure; with the invention of wave mechanics and the relativistic explanation of the electrons' intrinsic angular momentum, the theory as we know it today was completed, and Fermi helped complete the picture. He applied his degenerate gas theory to the electrons in atomic structure, producing [in the present paper] a statistical atomic model, and in 1928 we see him calculating the Rydberg correction to S-terms using this idea" (<i>Enrico Fermi 1901-1954: A Biographical Memoir</i>, National Academy of Sciences, p. 127). <br/><br/> From the earliest days of quantum mechanics, it has been clear that one could not hope to solve exactly most of the physically interesting systems, especially those with three or more particles. The Thomas-Fermi model aims to describe the statistical distribution of the electrons in a large atom, rather than the positions and momenta of each individual electron. Although only an approximation, it has proved extremely useful in the study of atoms and molecules, especially for those with large numbers of electrons. In fact, a rigorous analysis by Elliot Lieb and Barry Simon in 1977 showed that the approximation becomes exact in the limit as the atomic number tends to infinity. The model is equally applicable to gravitational problems and electrostatic ones, and so has applications to astrophysical problems such as neutron stars. <br/><br/> The best known 'failure' of the Thomas-Fermi model, first proved by Edward Teller in 1962, is that that it predicts that molecules do not bind (the energy of a cluster of several molecules is greater than the sum of the energies of the individual molecules). This 'no binding' property of clusters of atoms was used by Lieb and Walter Thirring in 1975 to prove the 'stability of matter,' in the sense that as the number of particles increases, the total energy decreases only linearly rather than as a higher power of the number of particles, as it would if electrons were bosons rather than fermions.. Pp. 73-79 in Zeitschrift für Physik, 48. Band, 1. & 2. Heft. 8vo (228 x 158 mm), pp. 148. Original printed wrappers. From the library of Niels Bohr with his name ('N. Bohr') stamped on upper cover and 'Bohr' signed in pencil in a different hand (Fermi's?)

Braunschweig: Friedr. Wieweg & Sohn., 1913. First edition. The paper in which he first formulated his 'Adiabatic Hypothesis' of quantum theory. "Two important heuristic principles have guided quantum physicists during the period 1913-1925, viz. Ehrenfest's Adiabatic Hypothesis and Bohr's Principle of Correnspondance. The Adiabatic Hypothesis, first formulated by Ehrenfest in 1913 [this paper], says: If a system be affected in a reversible adiabatic way, allawed motions are transformed into allowed motions." (Van der Waerden: Sources of Quantum Mechanics, pp.3-4). Published in: Verhandlungen der Deutschen Physikalischen Gesellschaft im Jahre 1913, Nr. 11, pp.451-457. Entire issue offered. DSB IX, 542; PMM 407; Norman 1559 - FIRST EDITION of Moseley's breakthrough work which placed the atomic table on a firm scientific foundation. "Moseley, working under Rutherford at Manchester, used the method of X-ray spectroscopy devised by the Braggs to calculate variations in the wavelength of the rays emitted by each element. These he was able to arrange in a series according to the nuclear charge of each element. Thus if the nuclear charge of hydrogen is 1, in helium it is 2, in lithium 3, and so on by regular progression to uranium as 92. These figures Moseley called atomic numbers. He pointed out that they also represented a corresponding increase in extra-nuclear electrons and that it is the number and arrangement of these electrons rather than the atomic weight that determines the properties of an element. It was now possible to base the periodic table on a firm foundation, and to state with confidence that the number of elements up to uranium is limited to 92. When Moseley's table was completed, six atomic numbers had no corresponding elements; but Moseley himself was able to predict the nature of four of the missing elements" (PMM 407) II. DSB II, 239; PMM 411; Norman 258 - FIRST EDITION."Bohr's three-part paper postulated the existence of stationary states of an atomic system whose behavior could be described using classical mechanics, while the transition of the system from one stationary state to another would represent a non-classical process accompanied by emission or absorption of one quantum of homogeneous radiation, the frequency of which was related to its energy by Planck's equation" (Norman).         A Turkish Woman's European Impressions

London: Seeley, Service, and Co.. 1913. First. First edition. Illustrated with thirty-two photographs and a drawing by Auguste Rodin. Fine in fine dustwrapper, with applied label with early reviews of the book. Hamoum was born Hadidje Zennour, the granddaughter a Circassian mother and French nobleman who settled in Constantinople. While Western educated and a member of elite society, she was forced to live a life of veiled restriction in Turkey. Seeking a way to improve her situation she reached out to French author Pierre Loti, who made her (and her sister) the subject of his final novel Les Desenchantees, a tragic romance that exposed the difficult life of Turkish woman. Following the book's publication she and her sister left Turkey for Europe where she penned this travelogue of her experiences presented in a series of letters edited by British journalist Grace Ellison. A compelling book and very scarce in jacket. .

London: Macmillan & Co., Limited,. 1913. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-506 [507-508: ads] + undated 8-page publisher's catalogue inserted at rear,. original decorated olive-green cloth, front panel stamped in gold and black, spine panel stamped in gold.. Binding lightly rubbed at head and tail of spine panel and corner. tips, inner hinges tender with several hairline cracks, a near fine,. bright copy. A wonderful association copy. (#71689). First edition. Presentation copy with contemporary signed inscription by Blackwood to the children of English writer Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953) on front free endpaper: "To the Fairy Children / at Kingsland / from Algernon Blackwood." Belloc and Blackwood were close friends and Blackwood was a frequent visitor at Belloc's retreat at Kingsland in Sussex. The "aspect of writing for children increasingly fascinated Blackwood, especially as he was finding himself more immediately surrounded by them. There was his own nephew, Patrick, the son of his elder brother ... Baron de Knoop had children by an earlier marriage and, during the years of the First World War, Baroness de Knoop looked after three Polish orphans. Blackwood also frequently entertained the Belloc children, especially after the death of Hilaire's wife Elodie in February 1914. To all of these Blackwood became 'Uncle Paul,' and he delighted in having the fun of the children without the responsibility. Blackwood was of the opinion that children, like animals, had not lost their instinctive closeness to Nature or their innocence, both of which became dulled by civilization and overbearing adults. Children adored Blackwood because he behaved and saw the world like them -- the world of wonder in a daisy, a cloud or a butterfly. With A PRISONER IN FAIRYLAND Blackwood ... showed signs that he was losing control of his subject matter, swamping the spirit of his theme with prolixity and a surfeit of sentiment. That view, though, was not shared by all of the critics or readers of the day. A PRISONER IN FAIRYLAND went through a rapid succession of reprintings and was one of the most popular of his novels." - Ashley, Algernon Blackwood: A Bio-Bibliography, pp. 18- 19. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 183. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy Volume II, p. 22. Bleiler (1978), p. 25. Reginald 01397. Ashley A.10.1.

        Captain Scott&#39;s Last Journey

ca. 1913.. Unrecorded lithograph by Archibald Bertram Webb, (1887&#150;1944), illustrating one of the iconic moments in exploration history, illustrating the trek of Captain Scott, Edward Wilson and Birdie Bowers on their return from the South Pole, having failed to beat Roald Amundsen to the Pole. Evans & Oates had already perished - these three were soon to join them. The tragedy captured the hearts and minds of the British Commonwealth. Archibald Bertram Webb (1887-1944), artist, was born on 4 March 1887 at Kennington, Kent, England. He studied at the St. Martin&#39;s School of Art and at the City and Guilds of London Art School."He was a freelance illustrator and commercial artist in 1905-14 for such periodicals as the Critic, of which his father was editor, the Pall Mall Magazine, Photography and Focus, John Bull and Sketch."[ADB]. &#11;&#11;We believe that this large scale print was issued in about 1913. It is akin to the limited reproduction of the 1913 painting by J.C. Dollman, printed by Orman of Nottingham about 1913, illustrating Lt. Oates leaning into the wind. It is possible that the image was used in a magazine, and perhaps as some special large-scale edition, perhaps for "The Critic" magazine. Opportunities for commercial artists abounded at this time as the magazines and newspapers of the period were heavily illustrated, and photographs were not used much before 1914. Our research into these magazines has shown one example of his illustration in the Jul-Dec 1912 volume of the Pall Mall Magazine, to illustrate a story "A Lighthouse Christmas" by Walter H. Holton. Webb&#39;s illustration for this story are signed "Arch Webb", in the same manner as this print. In later years, his signature was more often "A.B. Webb". &#11;&#11;Suffering from the effects of rheumatic fever, he emigrated with his wife to Western Australia, landing in Fremantle in May 1915. There he worked as a commercial artist, art teacher, etcher, lithographer, public servant, college teacher & water- colorist. His images were influenced by the style of Japanese woodcuts and Art Nouveau. Webb lived in Nedlands, close to the Swan River, which was a favorite subject for his work. He is a most sought-after artist in Western Australia. &#11; &#11;RARE:We have not seen this image of one of the most iconic moments in British Antarctic exploration in 35 years of dealing in this area. Not recorded on OCLC, Trove, The British Museum, The British Library, The Scott Polar Research Institute at Cambridge, no appearance at auction (either through ArtNet or AE), Renard&#39;s Antarctic Auction of 1994.&#11;&#11;Laid down on old board, lower margin trimmed around the caption. A little foxed with a dark discoloration in the left quadrant. Rather grandly matted in an old cream mat with gold filets around caption and the edge of the image. Image size approximately 21 1/2 x 13" in mat 30 x 19 3/4".

Illustrations are interesting photographs of Siberian peasants, their everyday activities, costumes, scenes of dances and games. The supplement contains the alphabet and subject Indexes of Siberian holidays; bibliography of the main works on the topic (p. 251-256); oral Siberian calendar from a blind Siberian peasant Chima, known for his phenomenal memory.
