Der Groyser Kundes The Big Stick [or The Big Prankster] Volume V A Jornal far humor, witz un satire [ = A magazine for humor, wit and satire] Fifth year

New York 1913 - Volume V numbers 1 to 48 (November 28, 1913). Numbers 49 (Dec. 5, 1913) is listed as Volume VI. to Number 52 (December 26, 1913), listed as Volume VI. Der Groyser Kundes The Big Stick or The Big Prankster was a New York City, Yiddish language satirical weekly which ran from 1909 until 1927. It was entitled Der Kibitser for its first year of production. Founded by the humorist Yosef Tunkel (or Der tunkeler, his pen name, meaning 'The dark one'), the paper was taken on by Jacob Marinoff when Tunkel left to work for an established paper in Warsaw. It consciously set itself up in opposition to the serious Yiddish-language press of the time such as the socialist Forverts. Though, naturally, more traditional religious Judaism did not escape its satire: The 1915 "Christmas" edition included a parodic conversation between Jesus and the prophet Elijah. Despite its irreverent attitude to everything, it also published poetry by Di Yunge ("The Young Ones") poets such as Moyshe-Leyb Halpern and Zuni Maud. At its height it had a circulation of 35,000 but folded in 1927 due to flagging sales. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Antarctic Expedition - Scott Memorial Plaque

[c.1913]. Embossed bronzed copper plaque (255 x 355 mm), in original ebonized wood frame (framed size, 367 × 455 mm). Wide border of laurels, twined with a wreath bearing the names of those who died on the expedition, at the corners are roundels with portraits of Scott, his wife Kathleen, and their son Peter, and the cross atop Scott's grave cairn; the border encloses a quartered panel with four scenes from the expedition, a dogsled pulling away from the Terra Nova, the Pole party man-hauling a sled, the party at the Pole, and the graves of Scott, Scott, Wilson and Bowers, a central 'boss' has a 'portrait' of Nigger, the expedition cat. Small metal label with the inscription "dulce et decorum est pro patria mori" - "A sweet and fitting thing it is to die for one's country". Some minor wear to the frame, with a few expert repairs, but overall in excellent condition. Attractive commemorative souvenir, Scott's widow herself received a silver version of the piece. The Polar scenes are based on photographs by Bowers and Ponting that appeared in issues of the Daily Mirror - the newspaper had exclusive rights to all expedition photographs - for either 12 February, the day on which Scott's death was announced, or the "Captain Scott Number" of 21 May, 1913, which published the first images of Scott's party at the Pole.

But these immense masses of sound are hardly ever used as a whole... Like many of his early works, op. 6 was conceived in reaction to the death of Webern's mother (1906)... In 1928, Webern prepared a second version of the pieces, which... reduces the hypertrophic orchestra to standard size." Manfred Angerer, website of Universal-Edition.

Wings and the Child; or The Building of Magic Cities

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1913., 1913. FIRST EDITION. Extremely scarce in dustwrapper. Publisher's pictorial green cloth with bright gilt titles to faded spine, lightly rubbed, a little spotting to top edge, in its illustrated dustwrapper, with one small chip to spine top. Illustrated with pictures by George Barraud and from photographs. Edith Nesbit (1858 - 1924), English novelist and short story writer, famous for her Ghost stories, Gothic tales, mysteries, and above all, her classic children's books, who was credited with having invented the children's adventure story. A mischievous, tomboyish child who grew up to be an unconventional adult, E Nesbit (she always used the plain initial to hide her gender) wrote for children after years of successful writing for adult magazines. She was asked to write about her childhood but instead of facts chose to describe her happy girlhood in fiction. Her first great success was The Story of the Treasure-Seekers (1899), followed by Five Children and It (1902), The New Treasure Seekers (1904), The Phoenix and The Carpet (1904), The Story of the Amulet (1906) The Enchanted Castle (1907), The House of Arden (1908) and The Magic City (1910). Her most celebrated story remains The Railway Children (1906), and many of her works have been successfully filmed, and many of her stories have been bestsellers for decades and continue to be enjoyed today.

Lev Samoylovich Rosenberg (Bakst), painter and stage designer realized his greatest artistic success in the Alesandrinksy and Maryinsky theaters, and latter from 1901 to 1921 with Diaghilev at the Ballet Russe where he designed more productions than any other artist. A fine example of Leon Bakst's contribution to the Russian ballet of the Diaghilev period. It includes a fine text by Alexandre and Cocteau, and numerous plates representing the various scenes and costumes he created for Diaghilev's ballet company. Bakst's greatest works are included in this volume, such as Scheherazade, Cleopatre, Daphnis and Chloe, and the notorious L'Apres-Midi d'un Faun, the erotic ballet choreographed and performed by the legendary Nijinsky. Interior contents fresh and clean, small nick to backstrip label, owner inscription front cover pastedown dated 1913. Three quarter vellum and blue cloth. Very good.         Andreae Dactii Patricii et Academici Florentini Poemata

In 8vo (cm 14,5); legatura del XVIII secolo in mezza pelle con fregi e titolo in oro al dorso, taglio rosso; pp. 320. Carattere corsivo latino e greco. XXVI, pp. 78 - 79 («raro libro»). Adams, D - 164. BMSTCItalian, p. 208. D.       Presso le Reale Societa Geografica, Roma 1913 - (History of Cartography) PINZA, Giovanni. Due Cosmografie, una Egizia ed una Sinaitica, in Due Piatti di Bronzo Trovati a Nimrud [Translation: Two Cosmographies, an Egyptian and a Sinaiticus, in Two Plates of Bronze Found in Nimrud]. Roma [Rome]: Presso le Reale Societa Geografica, 1913. First Edition. Text in Italian. Octavo, 9.25 x 6 inches. Original wraps, 110 pages. Fold-out map of site intact. Some toning and foxing to pages. Wraps rubbed and scuffed. Spine worn with some tears and chips. Toning and wear to edges. Good condition. Book on archeology of Nimrud. In antiquity, the town was known by the name Kalhu [Calah in the Old Testament], but the Arabs called it Nimrud after Nimrod, the biblical mighty hunter. Ronald Vere Tooley, considered the effective founder of the modern antiquarian map trade, was born and raised in London. After serving in World War I where he was one of the few in his regiment to survive the Battle of Cambrai, he joined the London booksellers Francis Edwards Ltd where he produced catalogues of rare books and old maps throughout the 1920s. After an attempt at his own business in the 1930s, Tooley rejoined Francis Edwards following World War II. Tooley devoted much of his time to the history of cartography and was considered an authority on early maps and cartographers. He authored multiple books on the subject and founded the Map Collectors' Circle, which published a series of monographs on historical cartography from 1963-1975. The festschrift, My Head is a Map, compiled in 1973 for his 75th birthday by British Library Map Librarians Helen Wallis and Sarah Tyacke, celebrated his contributions to the world of antiquarian maps.
