First edition, first impression. Account of Savage-Landor's hair-raising exploits in South America, from Rio de Janeiro "he trekked inland into the Northern Mato Grosso in the company of an unruly band of porters who ditched his possessions and stole provisions whenever the opportunity arose. Several times they mutinied and demanded to be released from his employ, only to realize that alone they had no hope of finding their way home" (Howgego). Landor mapped the Rio Arinos, which he descended to the Rio Juruena, continuing to the Rio Tapajós, and entered the Amazon after a "harrowing journey" in which they were rescued from their sinking raft by a rubber planter on his annual excursion upriver. The party descended the Amazon to its mouth at Belém, then re-ascended the river to Peru, crossed the Andes to Lima, thence to Cusco and La Paz, and back to the Pacific at Antofagasta; "There he shipped to Valparaiso, crossed the Andes for the fourth time and made his way overland to Buenos Ayres. The total distance was reckoned by Landor to be 13,750 miles." Savage-Landor was one of the last explorers in the grand style; "Landor's want of training and his impatience to press on with all speed made him an unreliable surveyor, and there were those who impugned the veracity of his hair-raising escapes; but in energy and resourcefulness, in courage and power of endurance, he was the equal of any of the previous generation of great explorers. He scorned special equipment and commonly appeared on a mountain or in a jungle as he would in Bond Street. His contempt for ropes and nailed boots nearly cost him his life mountaineering on several occasions." (ODNB) Howgego IV, L6 [Attributes: First Edition]

On the Theory of Decrease of Velocity of Moving Electrified Particles on passing through Matter

London, Taylor & Francis, 1913. 8vo. Bound in one nice contemporary half calf binding with gilt leather title-label to spine. Published in "The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science", Vol. 25. No. 145-150 offered. Small repair to spine and blind stamped to lower part of title page. The Bohr papers: pp. 10-31. [Entire volume: VIII, 876 pp.+ 10 plates].. Bohr's seminal first work on nuclear physics, being the work that lays the foundation for his atomic theory (published before his "On the Constitution of Atoms and Molecules"), in which he is able to conclude "that a hydrogen atom contains only 1 electron outside the positively charged nucleus, and that a helium atom only contains 2 electrons outside the nucleus ." "Bohr's 1913 paper on alpha-particles [i.e. the present], which he had begun in Manchester, and which had led him to the question of atomic structure, marks the transition to his great work, also of 1913, on that same problem. While still in Manchester, he had already begun an early sketch of those entirely new ideas." (Pais, p. 128). The present work must be considered one of the most important to the birth of modern atomic theory. After finishing his studies in Copenhagen, Bohr went to Cambridge in order to pursue his studies on electron theory under the guidance of J.J. Thompson. Thompson, who was beginning to lose interest in the subject by now, did, however, not recognize the genious of the young Bohr, and as soon as he could, Bohr went to Manchester, where Ernest Rutherford had established a laboratory. "There, from March to July 1912, working with utmost concentration, he [i.e. Bohr] laid the foundation for his greatest achievements in physics, the theory of the atomic constitution." (DSB). Bohr's survey of the implications of Rutherford's atomic model had led him to attack the much harder problem which lay at the core of it, namely determining the exact nature of the relation between the atomic number and the number of electrons in the atom. "Bohr obtained a much deeper insight into the problem by a brilliant piece of work, which he - working, as he said, "day and night" - completed with astonishing speed" (DSB), that paper being the present "On the Theory of the Decrease of Velocity of Moving electrified Particles on passing through Matter", which thus constitutes his very first publication on the subject, published immediately after this dense period of 1912, in the Philosophical Magazine of January 1913. "The problem was one of immediate interest for Rutherford's laboratory: in their passage through a material medium, alpha particles continually lose energy by ionizing the atoms they encounter, at a rate depending on their velocity. Their energy loss limits the depth to which the particles can penetrate into the medium, and the relation between this depth, or range, and the velocity offers a way of determining this velocity. What Bohr did was to analyze the ionizing process on the basis of the Rutherford model of the atom and thus express the rate of energy loss in terms of the velocity by a much more accurate formula than had so far been achieved-a formula, in fact, to which modern quantum mechanics adds only nonessential refinements" (DSB). In the present work, Bohr was thus able to conclude: "In this paper the theory of the decrease of velocity of moving electrified particles in passing through matter is given in a form, such that the rate of the decrease in the velocity depends on the frequency of vibration of the electrons in the atoms of the absorbing material." as well as the seminal words that have been formative for the birth of the modern atomic theory: "Adopting Prof. Rutherford's theory of the constitution of atoms, it seems that it can be concluded with great certainty, from the absorption of alpha-rays, that a hydrogen atom contains only 1 electron outside the positively charged nucleus, and that a helium atom only contains 2 electrons outside the nucleus ". Bohr continues: "These questions and some further information about the constitution of atoms which may be got from experiments on the absorption of alpha-rays, will be discussed in more detail in a later paper." (pp. 30-31 of the original paper) - the last sentence referring directly to his three part "On the Constitution of Atoms and Molecules", in which he went on to present his postulates of the orbital structure of the electrons and their quantized radiation. Rosenfeld, Bohr Bibliography No. 5. Rosenfeld, Dictionary of Scientific Biography II, pp. 240-41. Pais, Niels Bohr's Times, pp. 117-31

THE STRANGE CASES OF DR. STANCHON ...

A fine copy in very good pictorial dust jacket (which reproduces the. frontispiece on front panel) with shallow chip from upper spine end,. 30 x 40 mm chip from lower spine end (probably with loss of. publisher's imprint), light edge wear, rubbing and some closed splits. along folds, and several old internal tape mends at edges. Despite. the faults, an attractive example of a rare jacket. (#147363). First edition. First printing with code "(1)" at base of text on page 362. "A book of [ten] medical stories with emphasis on the psychic and psychopathic. Most ... are told in the form of mysteries ...." - Queen, The Detective Short Story, p. 8. "The series called THE STRANGE CASES OF DR. STANCHION ... shows instances occurring among the clientele of a famous brain specialist, where the materialist might put aside the explanation of the supernatural, only to be confronted by still greater problems. The relation between insanity and ghostliness in recent fiction is significant and forms the crux of many a story since Poe. Mrs. Bacon's 'The Miracle,' for instance, has its setting in an insane asylum, but the uncanny happenings almost convince us of the sanity of the patients and the paranoia of the outsiders. We come to agree with the specialist that every person is more or less a paranoiac, and none more so than he who scoffs at the supernatural." - Scarborough, The Supernatural in Modern English Fiction, p. 254. See also Scarborough, pp. 289 and 299. "A solid collection of supernatural tales, curiously overlooked by critics, scholars and collectors. Bacon was a successful American author in the first quarter of the century, turning out commercial fiction of a fairly high quality. This book, along with MEDUSA'S HEAD, seems to be her main contribution to the fantastic genre. Several of the stories here were mentioned in Dorothy Scarborough's important 1917 study, The Supernatural in Modern English Fiction, but, aside from infrequent appearances in anthologies, they have been ignored since then. In all ten stories of this collection, the supernatural plays a key role, usually to facilitate the escape from some confining and threatening situation. In two of the stories, that situation itself is supernatural, but the key to escaping it is to first stop denying its existence and meet it in on its own grounds. The stories hinge on both uncanny survivals from the past (ghosts, hauntings, ancestral calls) and uncanny anticipations of the future (premonitions, warnings, precognitions). The author brings fresh thinking to all of these motifs, including the most traditional. In her haunted house story ('The Unburied'), the symptoms of the haunting are specific and unusual: all the female inhabitants of a cheerful, ordinary-looking house are seduced by a malign presence into actions of sexual depravity. A curse expressed and embodied in a concealed cache of old love letters turns out to be the cause, which is discovered by a Roman Catholic priest after Dr. Stanchon's persistent failure to consider any 'unscientific' explanation. In some cases Stanchon, a general practitioner, shows refreshingly unorthodox thinking, in others he sticks with conventional wisdom. He and his redoubtable nurse, Miss Jessop, re-appear through these otherwise unrelated stories, usually in minor roles. (It would be inaccurate to put this collection in the category of occult detectives, except perhaps as a revisionist example). In other stories, the author shows considerable inventiveness. The old housekeeper in 'The Miracle' turns out to be a ghost -- and perhaps something more. We eventually learn that she had died (medically pronounced as such) even though her long-time employer had kept up an unbroken conversation with her. It is hinted that, after she 'comes back,' her body becomes a window into other souls than her own, including people who are unknown to her but close to whomever she happens to be with. Bacon is very skillful at gradually and credibly building up the sort of atmosphere that makes the unbelievable seems believable. The notion of shivering in response to an uncanny tale has been so abused and degraded by blurb-writers that it is all but impossible now to speak of it seriously. But the phenomenon itself, which is a great deal rarer than those blurbers would have us believe, is all but impossible to dismiss when it happens to oneself. The physical responses of the body to art constitute a kind of supreme court whose judgments are beyond appeal. Laughter, tears, shivers, increased heart beat, involuntary exclamations (and on the other side of the ledger, yawns and drooping eyelids): let the sophisticated critic or writer dismiss these as vulgar, but let's see him produce them first. It's harder than it looks. A reasonable guess is that fewer than ten percent of ghost stories actually deliver the goods in such an irrefutable manner. The true figure may be closer to one percent. Bacon maneuvered this reader into such a state in four of these stories. Bacon's work also carries a certain thematic weight that's unusual for the genre, exploring ideas of bondage and escape in a frequently unorthodox manner. In several cases, the heroine is trapped in a gilded birdcage. Wealthy heroines, having everything done for them, come to feel useless and lose the zest for life. Escape comes by renouncing unearned wealth and taking up the struggle for one's daily bread. In another case ('The Crystal'), a young woman is trapped in a fast-track career and eventually has a nervous break-down. A moment of accidental crystal-gazing helps her get off the fast track and find the right path, which in her case means becoming the working wife of the captain of a tramp steamer. In the most moving of these stories ('The Key'), a wealthy but helpless middle-aged society woman is finally committed to an asylum for what would now be diagnosed as clinical depression. In a dream she learns how to escape the asylum, and proceeds to do so, with no plan but to follow instincts and opportunities. She disguises herself, adopts a new identity, is robbed of her jewels, and winds up as the housekeeper of a small boarding house in the suburbs, happy for the first time in her life. In 'The Gypsy' the author does not quite bring off a similar transition. But the mere effort to tackle such a riches-to-rags theme is laudable for its freshness." As with almost any popular writer, the social mores underlying Bacon's stories accurately reflect and amplify those of her time, with the result that, a century later, many seem dated. But, all in all, for thematic weight, stylistic polish and fantastic imagination, this deserves to be considered a core collection of American short supernatural fiction." - Robert Eldridge. Bleiler (1948), p. 37. Not in Bleiler (1978). Reginald 00698. Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 B-64.

Buchhändlervermerk a. 1. fl.Bl.: ?[1913] First edition, large paper copy, 26 mounted coloured plates by Nielsen, 2 extra to the trade edition? Each plate accompanied by a guard sheet with descriptive letter-press. Printed by Henry Stone and Son, Ltd., Banbury, p. [164]. Eight of the colored plates are dated ?1913? ? Contents / Inhalt : 1. Minon-Minette [nach de Caylus], 2. Felicia, or, The pot of pinks [nach d?Aulnoy], 3. The twelve dancing princesses [Andrew Lang], 4. Rosanie, or, The inconstant prince [n. de Caylus], 5. The man who never laughed [bearbeitet n. einer Version von William Morris], 6. John and the ghosts [Quiller-Couch], 7. The Czarina's violet [Francis Money-Coutts i.e. Lord Latimer]. -- NETTOGEWICHT / NET WEIGHT 2.5 kg Sprache: en [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Rogers, Government Printer, 1912 [and] 1913 - Foolscap folio, 66 pages plus a folding chart, 3 large folding plans or charts (describing a typical plan of a lock and weir, and charting the effects of certain reservoirs on navigation) and a large folding map of the Murray (555 x 910 mm, the 'section between Swan Reach and Wentworth . showing locations of lock-sites', with a very large inset map of the entire length of the river), [and] 32 pages plus a folding map ('Proposed improvements in the vicinity of the mouth of the River Murray', 537 x 518 mm). Contemporary full morocco lettered in gilt on the front cover 'Captain Johnston's River Murray Reports'; the original spine is missing and has been replaced with a fairly pedestrian piece of cloth, giving it a quarter cloth look; extremities rubbed, bumped and a little worn; title pages a little marked (with the second one a little foxed along the top margin); neat repairs to a few trifling tears to the folding plans (with a tape-stain to an old repair along one fold of the last map); slight nicks to the bottom edge of some leaves in the first paper; overall in very good condition. The ownership signature of Arthur Searcy (1913) is written in pencil on each title page. Arthur Searcy (1852-1935) was Controller of Harbors from July 1911 and Chairman of the Harbors Board Committee until his retirement at the age of 65 (information from the Searcy scrapbooks in the State Library of South Australia). He was the older brother of the more well-known Alfred (1854-1925). Loosely inserted are retained duplicate typescripts of two letters (in all, four pages foolscap) from Searcy, as Chairman of the Board, to the Minister of Marine, regarding proposed works at Victor Harbor (one page) and Goolwa (three pages). The letters are signed and dated at the head by Searcy (August and September 1922 respectively); the one on Goolwa raises numerous objections to Johnston's scheme. Three related contemporary newspaper cuttings (one printing a lengthy letter from Simpson Newland) are also present. The September 1928 ownership signature of E.H. Bakewell is written in pencil on the recto of the front flyleaf. Bakewell was managing director of the South Australian Reinforced Concrete Company, which makes sense in this context.
