In Memoriam. Miss Emily Wilding Davison, B.A

[London, Philp & Sons, T.V., Harlesden, 1913]. folded 8vo. brochure (19 x 13 cms), (4)pp., incorporating an oval photograph of Miss Davison set within a laurel wreath border, all four pages lined in black. Folded as issued and a fine, fresh, copy. An item of suffragette memorabilia of great rarity and of great symbolic significance. As a martyr to the cause, Emily Wilding Davison (1872-1913) holds a permanent place in the history of the suffragette movement, and therefore in the story of women's liberation. Davison had joined the WSPU in 1906 and soon became a highly active member, contributing numerous articles and reviews to the suffragette newspaper, Votes for Women,> until December 1911. 'However, in keeping with her consistent rejection of authority, she soon fell out of favour with the WSPU leadership over her independent and unauthorized programme of militant actions. Davison notably hid in the House of Commons three times, including in April 1911 when she spent the night in a cupboard near the crypt chapel in order to avoid participating in the census. She was imprisoned eight times, for offences including obstruction, assault, stone-throwing, breaking windows, and setting fire to pillar boxes, during which she went on hunger strikes, suffered solitary confinement and force feeding, barricaded herself in her cell, had a hosepipe turned on her, and attempted suicide as a protest against the mistreatment of her fellow suffragette prisoners. ...... Among Emily Davison's close friends were Rose Lamartine Yates, Elinor Penn-Gaskell, Edith Mansell-Moullin, and Mary Leigh—all prominent and active members of the suffrage movement. Sylvia Pankhurst, in The Suffragette Movement > (1931), describes her as ?'tall and slender, with unusually long arms, a small narrow head and red hair. Her illusive, whimsical green eyes and thin, half-smiling mouth, bore often the mocking expression of the Mona Lisa?' (Crawford, The women's suffrage movement>, 160). She never married and had no children. On 22 June 1912, after throwing herself onto a staircase at Holloway prison, Emily Davison told the medical officer that she had done so because she felt ?'that a tragedy was wanted?' (Hansard 5C, 25 June 1912, 216). However, she is usually remembered as the ?'suffragette martyr?' for her last protest at the Epsom Derby in June 1913. As the horses rounded Tattenham Corner she ducked under the railing and ran out onto the course in front of the king's horse, Anmer, which struck her with its chest and knocked her down. Among the articles found in her possession were two WSPU flags, a racecard, and a return train ticket to Victoria. She remained unconscious for four days and died on 8 June 1913 at Epsom Cottage Hospital as a result of a fracture to the base of the skull. The coroner recorded a verdict of death ?'due to misadventure?'. It is not known whether she intended to commit suicide. Queen Mary's first thought was for ?'poor Jones?', the jockey, and she referred to Davison as ?'the horrid woman?' (Pope-Hennessy, [Queen Mary, 1867-1953>], 467). A public funeral was held in London on 14 June 1913. Emily Davison's body was taken from Epsom and escorted, by a large and spectacular procession, from Victoria to St George's Church, Bloomsbury, where a memorial service was held, and afterwards to King's Cross where the body was entrained for Northumberland for burial at the parish church of St Mary's, Morpeth, on 15 June.' [Vera De Campli San Vito in ODNB]. The present brochure is a flattering posthumous eulogy to Emily Davison. It comprises a portrait and brief biographical note (on p.1), a long essay (on p.2) headed Why did she stop the King's Horse?, A petition to the King> (on p.3), and a programme note (on p.4) about the memorial service. Davison's death was, of course, a gift for the suffragette movement and was milked for all it was worth. 'The yielding up a life is the highest and most eloquent proof of love for others that human beings have it in their power to give - only the very strongest and most urgent reasons can call for such a sacrifice. Had Miss Davison such strong and urgent reasons? Yes, for deep down in her heart burned the knowledge of the intolerable wrongs from which women are suffering'.

A fascinating series of 4 letters in French, vividly documenting Debussy’s disdain for living at the Villa Médici where he felt his creativity was stifled.

Villa Medici and Paris, 1885-1913. - 4to and 8vo. 9 1/2 pages. An extraordinary series of letters clearly revealing Debussy’s frustration with life at the Villa Médici. 1) Autograph letter signed twice ("A Debussy") at the conclusion and with his initials after the postscript, 4 pages (6.87 x 4.37 in.; 175 x 111 mm.), Villa Médici, [May] 1885, to Monsieur Vasnier; split along vertical fold. He writes in full: „How I thank you! If you knew how good it is, when one feels so deprived of friendship, to receive a letter like yours. For an instant have relief from this life, which you give me, these are joys for which a heavy price must be paid afterward. For once it is over, it will only make you miss the moments when they were real, but I thank you for them once again and ask you to give me such as often as possible. How I would like to profit by your advice, imparted in such friendship, but I think that the seduction the contemplation of masterpieces exerts on the imagination demands a completely different moral state than that in which I am. You know my character very well, and you also know how much I am subject to ambient influences, and as well how this entire city oppresses, annihilates me. I am suffocating and am perfectly incapable of any good motion to shake up all this vile torpor, which makes me see things in a detestable light. That doesn’t go so far as to have lost the sense for beautiful things, but I don’t love them as one should, and so that it would be truly profitable for me. All this because I am here by virtue of a decree forcing me to feel the shadow of the Academy weighing down upon me. Oh! the Villa Médici is so full of the academic legend, from the doorman in this green uniform to the Director, who raises his gaze to the sky with an ecstatic air every time he speaks of it, and the encomiums that have been held on Michelangelo, Raphael, etc. sound like speeches given on their admission to the Academy. I am quite sure that Michelangelo would really laugh if he heard all that. I don’t know if I am mistaken, but it seems to me that Michelangelo is modernism pushed to its outermost limitations; he ventured up to the point of madness, and I think that if one followed his path, it wouldn’t lead you straight to the Institute. It is true that we are lads who are too small to venture down these paths. If you were here with me, how I would talk with you. How I feel, however, that as much as I would like it, it isn’t going to happen. All I will be bringing back from Rome will be the fever. I already have one (not Roman) which is another reason for me to be very sad and think far too much of the friendship I left behind in Paris not to want to return there as quickly as possible. You are perhaps going to find me quite ungrateful to reply so sadly to your letter and your kindness, which is truly so good, professor, at this way of spending my time. I ask you pardon for it, I have to do better. I am sad and ill, to boot, and as you are the only person to whom I can say all that I think, I profit by it without fearing the matter of boring you about me too much. No matter I am quite afraid that if I stay here too long I will lose a lot of time for nothing, that that will be the death of many of my artistic projects, and I tell you quite frankly of not being able to wait for the moment of my deliverance [.]". In a lengthy postscript, Debussy has added, „I am very glad about the success of your premiere by Mme Carvalho. As to the rest, the moment she heard Madame Vasnier, it was over. I think Mme. Carvalho is artist enough that the pleasure of the lessons given on the one part and received on the other is equal. I ask you to give my regards to Madame Vasnier and embrace Marguerite and Maurice for me. Tell them I miss them very much. I have written to Gounod. He has not yet replied". In the margin of the first page, Debussy has also written, „As to the music as performed in Rome, it is best not to talk about it". - While at the Paris Conservatoire, Debussy began s [Attributes: Signed Copy]

On the Constitution of Atoms and Molecules I [-III]. [Offprints from The Philosophical Magazine and Journal, sixth series, vol XXVI, July-December 1913].

Taylor and Francis, 1913 - 3 parts, 8vo (217 x 141 mm), pp 25; 21; 19; sewn in original orange wrappers; first and second parts blank, third with printed title (as issued), front wrapper of part I nearly loose and front wrapper of part II starting, a fine, completely unrestored, and coherent set, all three with numbering to the upper left corner of the front wrappers. £35,000First editions, author's presentation offprints of his great trilogy, which constitutes the birth of modern atomic physics, and for which he received the Nobel prize in 1922. 'Bohr's three-part paper postulated the existence of stationary states of an atomic system whose behavior could be described using classical mechanics, while the transition of the system from one stationary state to another would represent a non-classical process accompanied by emission or absorption of one quantum of homogeneous radiation, the frequency of which was related to its energy by Planck's equation' (Norman). In his previous paper ('On the Theory of Decrease of Velocity of Moving Electrified Particles on passing through Matter') Bohr had adopted Rutherford's nuclear model of the atom, and had become convinced that it was the peripheral electrons that determined the chemical properties of an element, whereas the nucleus determines the radioactive properties. However, Rutherford's model had an apparent explanatory problem: Why were the negatively charged electrons held away from the positive nucleus? In his doctoral dissertation on the electron theory of metals, Bohr had clarified the limitations of this theory, in particular its ability to explain magnetic properties, and he had shown how this arose from the classical nature of some of its foundations. Bohr strongly expected that the key to solving this problem was to be found in some way of introducing Planck's law of quantum action. In the beginning of 1913 Bohr heard about Rydberg's remarkable discovery in spectroscopy. Rydberg's formula could represent the frequencies of the lines of the hydrogen spectrum in the simplest form in terms of two integers. As soon as Bohr saw this formula, he immediately recognized that it gave him the missing clue to the correct way to introduce Planck's law of quantum of action into the description of the atomic systems. The rest of the academic year was spent reconstructing the whole theory upon the new foundation and expounding it in a large treatise, which was immediately published as these three papers in the Philosophical Magazine. It was in these papers that Bohr first gave his postulates of the orbital structure of the electrons and their quantized radiation. Bohr's atomic theory inaugurated two of the most adventurous decades in the history of science. In 1922 Bohr was awarded the Nobel Prize "for his services in the investigation of the structure of atoms and of the radiation emanating from them'. Provenance: first part inscribed in Bohr's hand 'Fra Forfatteren' (From the author), second and third part with his rubberstamp 'Fra Forfatteren', all three with numbering to the upper left corner of the front wrappers, from the library of the Danish chemist Professor Einar Biilmann (1873-1946)Norman 258 (Journal issue); Parkinson p 477

        The Abysmal Brute

Inscribed by Becky London. (Sisson and Martens page 70) First edition variant binding. The Abysmal Brute is a novel by American writer Jack London, first published in book form in 1913. It is a short novel, and could be regarded as a novelette. It first appeared in September 1911 in Popular Magazine. In the story, a successful boxer, who was brought up in a log cabin and knows little of the real world, begins to realize the corrupt practices in the game of boxing. In 1910, when the story was written, London had become a famous writer but he was worried that he had exhausted his ideas. The Abysmal Brute was based on one of several plot outlines he bought from Sinclair Lewis, an admirer of London who was at the beginning of his career. Other stories by Jack London about boxing are his novel The Game, published in 1905, his short story "A Piece of Steak" of 1909, and his short story "The Mexican" of 1911. The Abysmal Brute, based on the novel, was made into a movie in 1923; it featured Reginald Denny as Pat Glendon Jr, Mabel Julienne Scott as Maud Sangster and Hayden Stevenson as Sam Stubener. Conflict, is a 1936 film based on the novel and starring John Wayne as Pat Glendon, Jr, Jean Rogers as Maud Sangster and Frank Sheridan as Sam Stubener.Becky (Bess) London Fleming, the younger daughter of Jack and Bessie M. London, was born October 20, 1902, died at 90 years of age on March 26, 1992. Becky and her husband, Percy Fleming, were business partners in a stationary shop in downtown Oakland until retiring. Prior to that Becky had been a stenographer providing her with skills she utilized in transcribing her father's book into Braille for the Institute for the Blind. Becky was the inveterate reader, enjoying a wide range of literature from the classics to her father's writings to science fiction. She was also a dedicated baseball fan. The least ten years of here life were spent, after her husband's death, in Glen Ellen recalling memories of her father for Jack London fans.Condition:Previous owner's gift inscription on front end paper along with Becky London's inscription.
