RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM, Rendered Into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald

London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1913]. First edition with Bull's illustrations. Each page decorated by René Bull, with 10 beautiful tipped-in colour plates within impressive frames printed in blue, numerous smaller pastedown colour vignettes also framed in blue, and many fine decorations and line drawings printed in blue. 4to, publisher?s beautiful buff-coloured cloth lettered on the spine in gilt in a Persian style, the upper cover lettered in red and with elaborate pictorial decorations in brown, red and blue. The text printed on the recto only (other then Quatrain numbers) of 75 numbered leaves, plus plates and prelims. A very bright and appealing copy of this beautiful book. The plates are all pristine and perfect, the text leaves quite clean with only a bit of minor spotting at the prelims and very lightly at the edges, the binding firm and very handsome with only very light general age, a little bubbling to the cloth due to the glue used in production. A WONDERFULLY ILLUSTRATED BOOK, ONE OF OUR FAVORITES AND A BOOK THAT IS NOW BECOMING QUITE HARD TO FIND. Bull's illustrations for the Rubaiyat remain among the most evocative and beautiful ever accomplished. This book alone cements his reputation among the great book illustrators of the early twentieth century. The strikingly romantic text of the poem is greatly enriched by beautiful decorations which adorn every page of text. A truly passionate book.

PRINCESS BADOURA: A Tale from the Arabian Nights Retold by Laurence Housman

London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1913]. First edition. With 10 fantastic tipped-in colour plates by Edmund Dulac, each with a captioned and decorated tissue guard, decorated titlepage and with Persian style border to each page of text. 4to, publisher's original white cloth lettered and pictorially decorated in gilt and turquoise on the upper cover and spine, decorative "peacock" endpapers in turquoise. [iv], 113 pp. An unusually well preserved, lovely, bright copy of this elusive book. Some very minimal evidence of age, the plates all very fine, the text very clean. FIRST EDITION AND A BEAUTIFUL COPY OF THIS WONDERFUL BOOK. Dulac's love of the oriental style is never more apparent than in these illustrations, perfectly suited to the story of a Princess of China and the Island Prince. His luxurious use of color and line carries his audience away into the exotic. The book is especially important in Dulac?s oeuvre as it marked a change unprecedented for Dulac. ?There was now no single position from which an observer could view the entire scene; he must move about within the picture in order to see everything. Dulac began simplifying the elements which make up a picture and turned them into stylized units,...all arranged so as to make up a composition which carried the eye round the painting. To give variety to these compositional units Dulac adopted the Persian emphasis on heavily patterned surfaces, as in an illustration where a robber?s baggy trousers, with an elaborate motif, are used as a flat decorative unit that happens to be trouser shaped. The jeweled dots...are now used by Dulac to make deliberate patterns....?

[ALBUM OF EIGHTY-FIVE ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS SHOWING CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS AROUND CALIFORNIA, MANY INVOLVING BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION, AND OTHERS SHOWING PIERS AND BUILDINGS]

[Various places in California, 1913. Mounted in a contemporary oblong quarto cloth album, string-tied. The photographs are in near fine condition. An album of interesting photographs of construction projects in California, mostly centered in the Bay Area and Central Valley, in the years before World War I. Many of the photographs show bridges under construction or finished, and it is likely that the compiler of this album was either a contractor or an engineer - someone who worked on pilings and bridge foundations. Included are pictures of the building of Pier 30-32 in San Francisco in 1913, a major public works project in the post-earthquake years. Located just south of the present location of the Bay Bridge, Pier 30-32 was built as the first pair of piers in San Francisco. It was the first with up-to-date freight handling services consisting of traveling cranes, telphers, and shiptowers. A major construction project, it is represented by several photographs. A number of bridges and bridge construction projects are also shown, including the Crescent City suspension bridge, the Eel River Bridge in Humboldt County, four images of the Skaggs Bridge in Fresno, a bridge in Modesto, several images of San Joaquin River bridges, and the Oroville Bridge. There are also a number of images of lift bridges, including the Hawthorne Avenue Bridge in Portland, and a pair of pictures of the types of dredgers used in constructing river bridges. Other photographs show buildings in Thousand Oaks, Eureka, Fresno, and San Francisco a few months after the earthquake. An interesting visual survey of public works constructions projects in California in the early 20th century.

        O Pioneers! (First Edition)

Boston: Houghton, Mifflin, 1913. First Edition. First Edition, first issue book and jacket, meeting all points in the Crane bibliiography. "O Pioneers!" was written while Willa Cather was living in New York, and is the first novel in her Great Plains trilogy, followed by "The Song of the Lark" (1915) and "My Àntonia" (1918). The story concerns pioneers in Nebraska, and is divided into five parts, each with many chapters, and touches on many then-modern elements, including feminism, realism, and isolation. In a 1921 interview, Cather said the book was born out of a desire "...not to 'write' at all, simply to give myself up to the pleasure of recapturing in memory people and places I'd forgotten." Very Good plus in a restored example of the excessively rare dust jacket that presents as about Near Fine. Crane A6.a.i.

        Arthur Rackham's Book of Pictures

1913. With Forty-Four Mounted Color PlatesIncluding 'Cupid's Alley'RACKHAM, Arthur. Arthur Rackham's Book of Pictures. With an Introduction by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch. London: William Heinemann. n.d. [1913]. Edition de Luxe. Limited to 1,130 numbered copies, signed by the artist (this copy being no. 412). Large quarto (11 1/2 x 9 inches; 292 x 232 mm). 43, [1] pp. Forty-four color plates (including frontispiece) mounted on tan paper, with descriptive tissue guards, and ten drawings in black and white.Publisher's white buckram, front cover pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. Very slight discoloration to end-papers, otherwise a near fine copy in the original (repaired) white cardboard slip-case."Arthur Rackham's Book of Pictures brings together a number of drawings unrelated in theme. Most of them, it is true, are drawings of the supernatural, of goblins, elves and fairies, and many are based on actual fairy tales; but there are also delightful straightforward drawings of children at the seaside or in the Broad Walk, Kensington Gardens; there is also the well-known 'Cupid's Alley' [the original of which is in the Tate Gallery], which illustrates verses by Austin Dobson, and there are subject pictures and landscapes of wide variety. It was important that such a book should be drawn together by an introductory essay, and natural for Rackham to invite [J.M.] Barrie to write it. The answer he received was cordial but disappointing: '24 June 1913. Dear Rackham, I wish I could, but I have promised to write two introductions this autumn, and had better not undertake more. Added to which I would be very bad at it as I have no skill in criticism. I am very glad to hear of the book and look forward to it. You have no greater admirer than myself, and few there are more warmly indebted to you. 'Yours very sincerely J.M. Barrie'. Rackham was fortunate in obtaining Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch as a substitute for Barrie. 'Q' not only admired Rackham's work; he also thoroughly understood a child's instinctive longing for the imaginative and fanciful. 'To this instant, constant, intellectual need of childhood no one in our day,' he wrote, 'has ministered so bountifully or so whole-heartedly as Mr. Rackham.' And Quiller-Couch was happy, too, in associating the random, impressionistic nature of much of the Book of Pictures with 'the wayward visions that tease every true artist's mind, while he bends over the day's work'". (Derek Hudson. Arthur Rackham. His Life and Work, pp. 97-98).Latimore and Haskell, pp. 41-42. Riall, p. 118.

Leather chipping/split to several edges with some loss; joints of 1891 vol split with 1" - 2" loss to spine ends; rubber band fragments stuck to three volumes. Expected general wear from use to bindings, owner name and drawn emblem to inside flap and/or ffep of all volumes. Pages clean and neat, with only a few minor scattered smudges, etc. Good condition overall.. ~20 to 30 pp introductory section per record book, containing a printed calendar, standard dosage amts, etc; remainder of record books upaginated, ~200 pages per book. Recording pages lined and ruled, with printed column headings. 6-3/8" x 3-3/4". Emergency case: 4-1/2" x 3-1/8". Lighter: 3-1/4" x 1-3/4". Box of Aseptic: 2-1/2" x 1-5/8" Cache of nine medical record books kept by one Dr. Franklin John Kaufman, for the years 1889, 1891- 92, 1894 - 95, 1899 - 1900, 1911 and 1913. Also included are: an aluminum "Emergency Pocket Medical" produced by Fraisse & Co Laboratory (8, Rue Jasmin, Paris), containing labeled vials of Strychnia (Sulph.), Pure Ether, Sparteine, Ergotine, Camphorated Oil, Caffiene, and "Fraisse's Quineine-Iodo Busmuthate ampoules"; a box of Ergot Aseptic Ampoules, 1/4 Doz. 1 CC No. 29, manufactured by Parke, Davis & Co. in Jan. 1924, apparently unused and with the manufacturer's cutting blade laid in; and a silver syringe case containing a silver-and-glass syringe and three screw-on needles (additional parts may be missing, as there is a sizeable empty slot beside these); and scattered ephemeral material contained in the wallet pockets or laid in. An interesting archive documenting of the late 19th & early 20th-century practice of a Syracuse-based general practitioner, revealing much about medical fees, common ailments (ranging from sprains and the clap, to typhoid fever, cholera, etc.), treatments, causes of death, and more, as well as about the population being treated. Ages and causes of death vary widely, from patients in their eighties dying of "senility" to a child dying of asphyxia half an hour after birth; the section in each volume for the doctor's obstretic practice also includes, in some cases, the parents' occupation (foundry worker, painter, and [general] laborer are prominent), which suggests a potential for further study into possible links between the occupations of these parents and their various ailments, as it is likely they were treated by Dr. Kaufman themselves. Although these volumes appear to reference a presumably much more thorough ledger of patient medical records, many entries bear brief diagnostic or treatment notes in English, Latin or Greek, included beside the fees listed; the quantity of these notes decreases significantly as the years progress, with entries being most thorough in the beginning and quite sparse indeed by the final recorded years. The 14+ pieces of ephemera include a stamped, linen-backed vaccination card for one Simione Gruschid (??), dated May 19, 1899; Dr. Kaufman's membership card for the Lakeside Yacht Club; a physician's order card issued by the Department of Charities and Correction assigning the doctor to attend one John Demkowski's children on Feb 6, 19[11?]; and handwritten prescriptions, jotted notes, clippings, etc. All in all, a well-rounded portrayal, in general note form, of the general medical practice of a successful Syracuse doctor at the turn of the last century.

Original pictorial wrappers within seven cloth-backed board portfolios with ties, contained within seven fine modern green half morocco boxes An exceptional set in original parts of this inspirational privately-printed work on the trees growing in the British Isles, China, Japan, the Mediterranean and the Americas at the turn of the 20th century A valuable record of trees from around the world: with a significant number of examples from China, Japan, the Mediterranean and the Americas. All illustrated by very fine photogravures, most showing specimen trees in gardens in the British Isles, but with a number of images showing the species in their native habitats. The work was published by subscription. The exact number of copies printed is not known but the subscribers' list runs to 244 names, with a further 12 individuals or institutions receiving a presentation copy. Elwes and Henry took John Claudius Loudon's Arboretum Et Fruticetum Britannicum; or, the trees and shrubs of Britain (7 vols, London: 1835-1838) as their starting point. Loudon recorded every tree of note in the British Isles, and after a period of over half a century when most of the specimens had suffered considerable neglect, Elwes returned to examine Loudon's trees anew and to record subsequent introductions. 'In taking stock of the results, the task which my friend Mr. Elwes has set himself differs ... from that which Loudon accomplished. That amounted to little more than a descriptive catalogue ... The present work aims at ascertaining the practical results [of growing various species]. What are the most favourable conditions for the growth of each species? What in turn are the most suited for different circumstances? And what, if any, profit can be derived from their cultivation on a large scale?' (W.T. Thistleton-Dyer writing in the 'Preface').         1913 - 1920 Ketterlinus Lithographic Manufacturing Co. Philadelphia Concerning the Copyright Legal Case Involving Advertising Specialties Made for the Motion Picture Industry.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Ketterlinus Lithographic Manufacturing Co., 1913. Archive consists of approximately 50 pages of material. The Ketterlinus Lithographic Manufacturing Co. was a large commercial printing enterprise in Philadelphia, using modern and innovative printing processes for Congressional documents, cards, bill heads, notes, checks, circulars, and catalogues in addition to embossed show cards, perfumery, fabric, wine and liquor labels, druggists' furniture, jar and drawer labels (see Library Co. of Philadelphia reference online for good background on the family and the business). They were adroit at spotting opportunities for the use of printing for advertising; the immense popularity of silent film and its stars was capitalized upon by the company by printing hand-held fans with the likenesses of male and female stars, which were in turn sold to distributors and on to the theaters and stationers where they were given away as promotion of feature films and also sold to enthusiasts - movie theater air conditioning had not yet arrived, hence these functional souvenirs. The group begins with a Ketterlinus letterhead typed form letter dated 1913 to Essanay Film Co. of Chicago asking for imagery of the leading man and lady for this purpose (fold lines, chipped, good condition); in 1915 the Selig Polyscope Co. on their letterhead to Ketterlinus, allowing the company to use an image on their "high class advertising fans" (closed tear, chipped); also in 1915 the American Film Manufacturing Co. gives rights and asks for samples of the fan (the back of this letterhead with black and white birds-eye-view illustration of the Flying "A" Studios and Laboratories at Santa Barbara, Calif., wear, very good condition); Ketterlinus also hired agents to acquire rights to use the stars' images and the rest of this group of material includes their correspondence with such an agent, Miss Alton Goodrich "Commissionaire for Artists Photographs for Advertisers" of 31 West 31st Street NY. Ketterlinus used different images over the years and were constantly updating their photographic stock - wanting "prominent stars," per their letter of 1919 to Miss Goodrich, who shared space with the S. Eddowes Co. Studios in NY; there are several lists, typed and handwritten of desirable images, Ketterlinus seeking photos of Mary Pickford, Ruth Roland, Douglas Fairbanks, Wallace Reid, Tom Mix and also directors D.W. Griffith and Thos. H. Ince. The research papers here sometimes indicating the home studio of the star; there is back-and-forth correspondence between Goodrich and Ketterlinus regarding the ease or difficulty in securing the photos, some of which are complicated by agreements and rights requirements - usually, Ketterlinus tried to secure unlimited rights and would not consent to limitations. Letters from Goodrich include her work for the company, information on images sent, billing and other details. Also a letter from Pathe Exchange in 1919 concerning Dolores Cassinelli and Virginia Pearson, and one on D.W. Griffith Repertory Season George M Cohan Theatre letterhead regarding Griffith and Lillian Gish imagery; another from Goldwyn Pictures Corp. and a letter from the Famous Players - Lasky Corp. who represented Paramount Pictures and Artcraft Pictures, regarding the fans; About ½ of the material concerns a copyright disagreement between Samuel Lumiere (1878-1971) Russian-American photographic portraitist, who specialized in showgirls and movie star stills with studios in NY and the Ketterlinus company. Lumiere was represented by the law firm of Almy, Van Gordon and Evans of NY who claimed that Alton Goodrich did not have permission to give the rights of use to Ketterlinus of Lumiere's photograph of silent-film star Ethel Clayton (1882 - 1966), alleging that Ketterlinus had printed fans without permission; the correspondence back and forth includes a note from the Library of Congress Copyright Office with a copy of the photograph in dispute -evidently Lumiere had sent the Office copies before the date of the lawsuit; Ketterlinus had to move quickly to alert their distributors, withdraw stock and reverse their position to avoid lengthy and expensive proceedings; An interesting case of artists copyright and infringement, involving the motion picture industry and the powerful printing establishment; notable for the early motion picture advertising use of photography and the position of Alton Goodrich as agent of the business - there is a mystery and ambiguity concerning Goodrich, only a small mention of a person of the same name noted as a (male) performer in an early film archive; Condition: some of the letter pages browned, poor paper stock; others with some soiling old fold lines, markings and comments by Ketterlinus office personnel; in good condition overall; an interesting group. . Manuscript. Not Bound. Very Good.

A Very Good copy of the first edition thus, first printing, first illustrated edition (minor handling soil, rubbing to the spine ends and corners, bump to the rear board's upper edge, illustration facing page 30 a bit proud -- lacking the scarce dust jacket), SIGNED BY ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON on a small clipped piece of paper affixed to the title page; a posthumously published work illustrated by Gordon Browne. The work first appeared in Cornhill Magazine (1880) in the form of a letter and testament. The work, told in nine chapters, was later included in Stevenson's "New Arabian Nights" (1882) without the introductory paragraph which appeared in the Cornhill and with a few other textual changes as well. Arthur Conan Doyle declared it to be "the high-water mark of [Stevenson's] genius" and "the first short story in the world'". The tale provided the basis for the 1920 silent film "The White Circle" starring Spottiswoode Aitken, Janice Wilson, Harry Northrup, and John Gilbert. A Very Good copy, SIGNED BY ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON on a small clipped piece of paper affixed to the title page.
