Myths of the Hindus & Buddhists.

London: George G. Harrap & Company,, 1913. Octavo. Original red morocco, spine and front cover lettered, ruled and decorated in gilt, rear board ruled in blind, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, printed on japon throughout. Colour frontispiece with captioned tissue-guard and 31 similar plates by Abanindro Nath Tagore and others under his instruction. First edition, deluxe limited issue. The tête-de-tirage, number 1 of 75 copies, inscribed "To Viscountess Astor MP, with sincere regards" on the front free endpaper. Nancy Astor, the first female member of parliament, took an outspoken interest in India and particularly the rights of Indian women, though as such viewed the issue of self-determination with a certain ambivalence, writing to the Secretary of State for India, Samuel Hoare, to ask whether he could "sleep easy in his bed and think of India governed only by Indian men" (Mandler, ed., After the Victorians, p. 113). This copy also with the ownership inscription of Guru-Sadaya Dutt to the front free endpaper, dated 24 November 1928. Dutt (sometimes listed as Datta) was the husband of the Indian reformer and women's-rights activist Sarojini Nalini: his biography of her was published by the Hogarth Press in 1929. His other works include The Folk Dances of Bengal (1954). Sister Nivedita, born Margaret Noble in County Tyrone, travelled to India in 1898 to become a disciple of Swami Vivekananda, Hindu thinker and founder of the Ramakrishna mission, "one of a number of movements created within Hinduism in the nineteenth century" (ODNB). In 1900 she founded a school for girls in Calcutta, on which she spent most of her assets. She died in 1911 with her Myths of the Hindus & Buddhists about a third finished, leaving it to be completed by Coomaraswamy, an English-educated art historian of Tamil origin who was influential in the revival of Indian culture, and by his death in 1947, "recognized internationally as a leading Indologist, art critic, historian, and linguist.

LIFE AND NATURAL HISTORY NOTES OF EWEN KENNEDY Edited by His Sister May (MACDONALD).

Edinburgh: privately printed at the Ballantyne Press, 1913. privately printed at the Ballantyne Press,: Edinburgh:, 1913 . Edinburgh: privately printed at the Ballantyne Press, 1913 . Privately printed, no. 16 of 75 copies. With color illustrations by Edwin Alexander. Accompanied by an album of original photographs compiled by Ewen Kennedy of his nature observations, mostly ornithological. Ewen Kennedy, born in Bradford in 1880 and raised in Edinburgh, was a keen student of nature, especially the habits of birds, and a precocious photographer of his studies and travels at home in Scotland, and abroad in Europe, Chile, South Africa, etc. Much of this has been beautifully edited in this volume by his sister, May Kennedy Macdonald. The published volume is enhanced with reproductions of paintings of gull studies by the Scottish nature artist, Edwin Alexander, a friend of Kennedy, who also provided the title page sketch. Additionally there are numerous reproductions of Ewen Kennedy's own photographs of birds, nests, etc. COPAC locates 2 copies of the published volume (BL and National Library of Scotland) and OCLC adds only 2 more in the U.S ( excluding digital copies). The unique photograph album, with penned inscription, "Ewen Kennedy," and the bookplate of Harold Macdonald of Goodtrees, contains 37 original photographs with mounted typed notes. These sensitive and appealing photographs are mostly of various gulls and their nests (there is one shot of a 4 week old rabbit), including many head shots. No other copies we have found come with such an album of original photographs. 4to, and album with leaves bound on stubs (29.5 x 21 cm.); portrait frontispiece + xv + (i) + 211 + (1)pp. + 10 color plates from paintings, with tissue guards + 39 black and white plates from photographs; for the album; 13 photographs of various sizes on leaves of cream stock with mounted typed notes; 24 photographs measuring approximatly 10.5 x 14.5 cm. mounted on heavy grey stock with mounted typed identification labels. Both volumes bound in contemporary cloth, rubbed and soiled, corners bumped, slight wear at head and heel of spine on the text volume; the cloth on both volumes is quite similar, but not matching exactly; internally fine. With printed leather title labels on both spines. There is the bookplate of Harold Macdonald of "Goodtrees" in the photo album, also, the penned signature "Ewen Kennedy." In the published volume, there is an unsigned, penned presentation inscription dated November, 1913.

        In Queer Street.

London: F.V. White and Co., 1913., 1913. Inscribed First Edition. Octavo, pp.312. Bound in publisher's red cloth, with gilt titles to upper, gilt titles and publisher's imprint to spine, bottom edge uncut. According to a contemporary reviewer in the Western Mail (24th October 1913), Hume's "latest book, "In Queer Street", is much on a par with the rest of his work. It's principal merit lies in an ingenious plot, and a murder mystery which keeps the reader in a pleasing state of suspense down to the end of the volume. ... [A] sort of Montague and Capulet business," with a significant amount of murder in addition.

It tries to nibble my boots, which is interrupting." Potter herself appears in the drawing on page 22, bending over the piglet Alexander.

FIRST FRENCH EDITION OF ANDERSEN\'S VISION OF A UTOPIAN WORLD CITY. Hendrik Christian Andersen (1872 - 1940) was a Norwegian-American sculptor, painter and urban planner. He was born in Bergen, Norway, and emigrated as an infant with his family to Newport, Rhode Island. As a young artist, he mingled among Newport\'s wealthy elite, and spent some time as Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney\'s art teacher. At the age of 21, Andersen travelled to Europe, eventually settling in Rome. There he pursued his artistic interest in monumental classically inspired pieces, believing that they stimulated in the viewer a desire for self-improvement. He devoted much of his time designing a perfect \'World City\', filled with art, which would motivate humanity to achieve a near Utopian state. His urban planning philosophy is evident in his 1913 \"A World Center of Communication\". This enormous tome (the text weighed over ten pounds) was written with Ernest Hébrard and grew out of Andersen’s earlier writing, \"The Fountain of Life\". Central to the work was Andersen’s belief that art, more specifically monumental Beaux-Arts architecture, could bring about world peace and international harmony. The plan called for the creation of a central world capital. In his words, the city would be \"a fountain of overflowing knowledge to be fed by the whole world of human endeavour in art, science, religion, commerce, industry, and law; and in turn to diffuse throughout the whole of humanity as though it were one grand, divine body conceived by God, the vital requirements which would renew its strength, protect its rights, and enable it to attain greater heights through a concentration of world effort.”Evident in the treatise is Andersen’s philosophy that art could change humanity and produce perfection. While roundly criticized by urban planners of the time for its political naïveté coupled with an over emphasis on the monumental, the work demonstrates an appreciation of the political and social conflicts necessitated by the rampant nationalism of the early 20th Century and sought to use art to bring about an Utopian world. Andersen’s view of the power of art and architecture to transform society can be seen as a precursor to similar concepts advanced later in the 20th Century by a variety of urban planners including Le Corbusier in his Contemporary City.In 1899 Andersen met Henry James the American expatriate writer. Although James was almost 30 years his senior the two developed a close relationship that was to last until James’ death in 1916. While the precise nature of the relationship is still unclear and may always be so—the two actually met on just a few occasions, and then for only brief periods of time—they exchanged numerous letters, which evidence a close, loving, homoerotic bond. Despite such affection, James lost patience with Andersen when the sculptor tried to interest him in the grandiose plans for the \"World City\". James warned Andersen that he was slipping into megalomania with his plans for the \"World City\". Andersen bequeathed his home, studio, papers and more than 400 pieces of his work to the Italian Government. The home in Rome has been renovated and now is the museum Museo Hendrik Christian Andersen located at Via Pasquale Stanislao Mancini, 20 (piazzale Flaminio). The book is in two parts. The first deals with the history of the city and monumental architecture, and seeks inspiration in classical and contemporary notions of city planning - Paris and Washington DC feature prominently. The second part details Andersen\'s imaginary urban landscape, complete with works of art, for the \'World City\'. Olympic stadia, galleries for the arts and sciences, as well as government buildings are all outlined, and placed upon a defined grid plan with an emphasis on a grand central avenue acting as the axis of the city.         My Attainment Of The Pole Being the Record of the Expedition that First Reached the Boreal Center 1907 - 1909, With the Final Summary of the Polar Controversy

New York: Mitchell Kennerley 1913 - New York: Mitchell Kennerley, 1913. Third Edition. 8vo - 20cm. [xx], 610pp., Index (8pp.), Publisher's Advertisments (2pp.). With portrait frontispiece of Frederick Cook and 31 black-and-white photographic and other illustrations, charts, and drawings. Publisher's light green cloth, lettered in black on upper cover and spine. A Near Fine and complete copy signed and inscribed by Frederick A. Cook on the front free fly leaf. In 1907, Cook accompanied an expedition northward, prepared to attempt to reach the Pole if the opportunity arose, and according to his own story he claimed to have done so, leaving his party accompanied only by a few Eskimos, early in 1908. The announcement of his success was made just five days before Peary cabled his news of victory, and a tempestuous controversy immediately broke out. The public was disposed to believe Cook's claim, and he received a hearty reception at Copenhagen. Scientific opinion was more reserved, however, and after a careful consideration of the evidence, Cook's claim was dismissed. This edition recounts Cook's description of his attainment of the North Pole and his return journey. It also presents Cook's perspective of the keys to the controversy with regard to his and Peary's claim to have reached the North Pole, the Mt. McKinley Bribery, The Dunkle-Loose Forgery and how the Geographic Society prostitued itself. This book is a fascinating read surrounding the controversies surround Cook from his perspective. WITH: A Very Rare original tipped in post card mailer with an removeable stub stating: "In the interest of fair play - Dr. Cook's book requests his friends to use their influence to endeavor to bring about a National Investigation of the Polar Attainment: in line with this effort he suggests that you detach, sign and mail the card below to your congressman, or better still, write him a personal letter." The stub and post card are still attached, with the card stating: ________________________1913 "To Congressman, Washington, D.C. Dear Sir. - The conquest of the North Pole has lifted the United States to a first position as a Nation of scientific pioneers. The controversy which followed is a blot on our Flag and it is a slur at our National Honor. From the Government purse and from private resources we have spent millions to reach the top of the Earth; it would appear therefore to be our duty as a nation to adjust the Polar contention in the eyes of the world. If Dr. Cook has reached the Pole, a year earlier than Peary, aas most Arctic Explorers believe, then the seeming endorsement and the pension of the Naval Officer is an injustice to Dr. Cook and an imposition on the Public; if both have reached the Pole then there should be a suitable recognition and reward extended to each. As one of thousands of American Citizens I beg of you to forward a movement which will bring about a National Investigation into this problem, with a suitable provision for a proper recognition. Respectfully, __________________" [Attributes: Hard Cover]

FIRST FRENCH EDITION OF ANDERSEN'S VISION OF A UTOPIAN WORLD CITY. Hendrik Christian Andersen (1872 - 1940) was a Norwegian-American sculptor, painter and urban planner. He was born in Bergen, Norway, and emigrated as an infant with his family to Newport, Rhode Island. As a young artist, he mingled among Newport's wealthy elite, and spent some time as Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney's art teacher. At the age of 21, Andersen travelled to Europe, eventually settling in Rome. There he pursued his artistic interest in monumental classically inspired pieces, believing that they stimulated in the viewer a desire for self-improvement. He devoted much of his time designing a perfect 'World City', filled with art, which would motivate humanity to achieve a near Utopian state. His urban planning philosophy is evident in his 1913 "A World Center of Communication". This enormous tome (the text weighed over ten pounds) was written with Ernest Hébrard and grew out of Andersen’s earlier writing, "The Fountain of Life". Central to the work was Andersen’s belief that art, more specifically monumental Beaux-Arts architecture, could bring about world peace and international harmony. The plan called for the creation of a central world capital. In his words, the city would be "a fountain of overflowing knowledge to be fed by the whole world of human endeavour in art, science, religion, commerce, industry, and law; and in turn to diffuse throughout the whole of humanity as though it were one grand, divine body conceived by God, the vital requirements which would renew its strength, protect its rights, and enable it to attain greater heights through a concentration of world effort." Evident in the treatise is Andersen’s philosophy that art could change humanity and produce perfection. While roundly criticized by urban planners of the time for its political naïveté coupled with an over emphasis on the monumental, the work demonstrates an appreciation of the political and social conflicts necessitated by the rampant nationalism of the early 20th Century and sought to use art to bring about an Utopian world. Andersen’s view of the power of art and architecture to transform society can be seen as a precursor to similar concepts advanced later in the 20th Century by a variety of urban planners including Le Corbusier in his Contemporary City. In 1899 Andersen met Henry James the American expatriate writer. Despite such affection, James lost patience with Andersen when the sculptor tried to interest him in the grandiose plans for the "World City". James warned Andersen that he was slipping into megalomania with his plans for the "World City". Andersen bequeathed his home, studio, papers and more than 400 pieces of his work to the Italian Government. The home in Rome has been renovated and now is the museum Museo Hendrik Christian Andersen l [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        [Photo Album]: My Memory Book

Ohio and Michigan. 1913-1936. Oblong quarto. Measuring 10" x 13". String-tied black cloth photo album with "My Memory Book" stamped in gilt on the front board. A collection of 382 black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 2.5" x 3.5" and 9" x 12" affixed to stiff black paper, along with related ephemera. A very good or better photo album with some chips and tears and with near fine photographs. The photo album and scrapbook belonging to Ohio native, Miriam Custis chronicling her life from her adolescence to life shortly after her college graduation. The album begins with childhood snapshots of Miriam, born September 5, 1913, in Finley, Ohio to the Reverend Dwight Lyman and Nettie Belle Hughes Custis. Sixteen photos show Miriam with a group of girls at what appears to be a summer camp for girls, swimming, playing the ukulele, and posing for silly photos. Custis attended Toronto High School (in Toronto, Ohio in Jefferson County, on the eastern edge of the state) and was accepted to Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio in 1930 where she obtained a teaching certificate after two years, and then transferred to Adrian College in Michigan. She kept a detailed account of her college life with programs from events and photographs with her college girlfriends. While she was at Adrian she was the president of the college's chapter of Delta Delta Delta with invitations, telegrams, photos of the Tri-Delta's car in the homecoming parade, and other sorority related ephemera. Custis documented Adrian's "Rejuvenation Party" which was a student celebration the week of homecoming which involved the men of her class drinking from bottles in what appear to be giant diapers. While at Adrian, Miriam met her future husband, Reverend Dr. Robert Harlan Cairns, who can be seen as her date throughout the album as well a photo of him preaching at the campus chapel. Custis graduated in 1934 with a degree in English and Latin and went on to teach in Ohio. There are photos of her graduation along with an alumni trip in 1936. According to her obituary, after college she "was involved in Christian education programs for children, mission work, and summer camps for troubled youth."A comprehensive look at a young woman's life, with an emphasis on her education, dating between 1913 until 1936. .

Berlin, 30. Juli 1913. - 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to.
