        Original watercolor of Florence Beerbohm

1913. Original drawing in pencil and watercolor on paper. Signed and dated "Max 1913" in pencil. An evocative and affectionate image of Max's American wife, the actoress Florence Kahn, showing her Pre-Raphaelite-like red hair and dress blown by a breeze. Fewer than a dozen "straight" portraits of Florence by Max and known. Virtually all derive from the collection of the publisher, bookseller, and broadcaster Douglas Cleverdon, who sold it to the American bookseller Franklin Gilliam; it later belonged to Marcia McGhee Carter, the co-founder (with Larry McMurtry) of the Booked Up bookshop and then passed into the collection of the Beerbohm bibliographer and collector, Mark Samuels Lasner. In fine condition. 34 x 23 cm. ORIG/011216.

Ms. Brief mit kleiner eigenh. Korrektur, eh. Nachschrift und U. („WSiemens").

Berlin, 30. Juli 1913. - 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to.

        Arthur Rackham's Book of Pictures

1913. first edition. First Trade Edition in the Scarce Original Printed Dust JacketWith Forty-Four Mounted Color PlatesRACKHAM, Arthur. Arthur Rackham's Book of Pictures. With an introduction by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch. London: William Heinemann, [1913]. First trade edition. Quarto ( 10 1/4 x 7 5/8 in; 261 x 193 mm). 43, [1] pp. Forty-four color plates (including frontispiece) mounted on tan paper, with descriptive tissue guards, and ten drawings in black and white.Publisher's gray-green cloth, front cover and spine pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt, top edge stained gray. Very slight discoloration on free end-papers from paste-downs. Ink name partially erased from the bookplate design on front paste-down, otherwise a very fine copy in the original brown paper dust jacket printed in black. A few small and neat repairs to extremities of dust jacket."Arthur Rackham's Book of Pictures brings together a number of drawings unrelated in theme. Most of them, it is true, are drawings of the supernatural, of goblins, elves and fairies, and many are based on actual fairy tales; but there are also delightful straightforward drawings of children at the seaside or in the Broad Walk, Kensington Gardens; there is also the well-known 'Cupid's Alley' [the original of which is in the Tate Gallery], which illustrates verses by Austin Dobson, and there are subject pictures and landscapes of wide variety. It was important that such a book should be drawn together by an introductory essay, and natural for Rackham to invite [J.M.] Barrie to write it. The answer he received was cordial but disappointing: '24 June 1913. Dear Rackham, I wish I could, but I have promised to write two introductions this autumn, and had better not undertake more. Added to which I would be very bad at it as I have no skill in criticism. I am very glad to hear of the book and look forward to it. You have no greater admirer than myself, and few there are more warmly indebted to you. 'Yours very sincerely J.M. Barrie'. Rackham was fortunate in obtaining Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch as a substitute for Barrie. 'Q' not only admired Rackham's work; he also thoroughly understood a child's instinctive longing for the imaginative and fanciful. 'To this instant, constant, intellectual need of childhood no one in our day,' he wrote, 'has ministered so bountifully or so whole-heartedly as Mr. Rackham.' And Quiller-Couch was happy, too, in associating the random, impressionistic nature of much of the Book of Pictures with 'the wayward visions that tease every true artist's mind, while he bends over the day's work'". (Derek Hudson. Arthur Rackham. His Life and Work, pp. 97-98).Latimore and Haskell, pp. 41-42. Riall, p. 118.

        [Photo Album]: My Memory Book

Ohio and Michigan. 1913-1936. Oblong quarto. Measuring 10" x 13". String-tied black cloth photo album with "My Memory Book" stamped in gilt on the front board. A collection of 382 black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 2.5" x 3.5" and 9" x 12" affixed to stiff black paper, along with related ephemera. A very good or better photo album with some chips and tears and with near fine photographs. The photo album and scrapbook belonging to Ohio native, Miriam Custis chronicling her life from her adolescence to life shortly after her college graduation. The album begins with childhood snapshots of Miriam, born September 5, 1913, in Finley, Ohio to the Reverend Dwight Lyman and Nettie Belle Hughes Custis. Sixteen photos show Miriam with a group of girls at what appears to be a summer camp for girls, swimming, playing the ukulele, and posing for silly photos. Custis attended Toronto High School (in Toronto, Ohio in Jefferson County, on the eastern edge of the state) and was accepted to Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio in 1930 where she obtained a teaching certificate after two years, and then transferred to Adrian College in Michigan. She kept a detailed account of her college life with programs from events and photographs with her college girlfriends. While she was at Adrian she was the president of the college's chapter of Delta Delta Delta with invitations, telegrams, photos of the Tri-Delta's car in the homecoming parade, and other sorority related ephemera. Custis documented Adrian's "Rejuvenation Party" which was a student celebration the week of homecoming which involved the men of her class drinking from bottles in what appear to be giant diapers. While at Adrian, Miriam met her future husband, Reverend Dr. Robert Harlan Cairns, who can be seen as her date throughout the album as well a photo of him preaching at the campus chapel. Custis graduated in 1934 with a degree in English and Latin and went on to teach in Ohio. There are photos of her graduation along with an alumni trip in 1936. According to her obituary, after college she "was involved in Christian education programs for children, mission work, and summer camps for troubled youth."A comprehensive look at a young woman's life, with an emphasis on her education, dating between 1913 until 1936. .

Eöthen: or traces of travel brought home grom the East by A.W. Kinglake. With an introduction by S.L. Bensusan and designs by Frank Brangwyn. London: Sampson Low, Marston & Co. Ltd., 1913.Edition de Luxe. One of 100 numbered copies signed by Brangwyn (of which this is number 88). Large quarto (1 1/4 x 9 inches; 286 x 228 mm.). 305, [1] pp. Twelve mounted plates, full-page black and white frontispiece, and thirty-one quarter-page black and white chapter headings. Publisher's quarter vellum over green buckram boards, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. A near fine copy.Alexander William Kinglake's epic journey through the Ottoman Empire to Cairo, and his residence there as the plague tore through the city was undertaken by him in 1835. His account of the journey, which he entitled Eöthen was first published nine years later in 1844. Someone had once asked Winston Churchill’s advice on how to improve his prose style. "Read Kinglake," said Churchill. The word Eöthen, means ‘from the east’, and the book describes the author’s travels in what is now the Middle East. Apparently Churchill was right, in that Eöthen is easy to read and tells a gripping story. The title, as the author points out, is the hardest word in the book. There are 29 chapters, many of them indicating the places he went to, such as Constantinople, Cyprus, Cairo, Damascus, Palestine, The Dead Sea, Jerusalem, Egypt, and Lebanon.Sir Frank William BRANGWYN, R.A., R.W.S., R.B.A. (1867-1956) was an Anglo-Welsh artist, painter, water colorist, virtuoso engraver and illustrator, and progressive designer. Born in Bruges, Belgium where his father moved after winning a competition organized by the Belgian Guild of St. Thomas and St. Luke to design a parish church. In 1874 the family moved back to the United Kingdom. In 1936 Brangwyn presented Bruges with over 400 works, now in the Arents House Museum. In return the King of Belgium made Brangwyn Grand Officer of the Order of Leopold II, and Bruges made him Citoyen d'Honneur de Bruges He was knighted in 1941. Brangwyn died on 11 June 1956 at his home in Sussex.

Ref : Alfred de Vigny : 1797-1863 : Paris, BnF/ catalogue réd. par Marie Cordroc´h. Alfred de Vigny (1797 – 1863) – French Romantic poet, playwright and novelist. With notes by Fernand Gregh. Delagrave, 1913. Number eight (8) of forty (40) copies on Imperial Japon, from a total limited edition of 125. 12mo (179 x 112 mm); all edges gilt, in exquisite blue crushed levant morocco, stamped signed by Léon Gruel in gilt on the spine, beautiful wheat gilt coat of arms in the front cover, spine with five raised bands and gilt letters. Tipped-in with a collotype (295 x 195 mm unfolded) after one page 100 from the manuscript, known to be one of the 18 missing pages from the full manuscript held at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, such missing pages have been sought after for more than a century. Exceptionally scarce and rare. This exceptionally rare book features a collotype of one of the legendary lost manuscript pages from Alfred de Vigny’s final work, “Daphné.” By the time Vigny was 19, he began an outline of a tragedy glorifying the Greek emperor Julian Apostate. While Vigny later gave up on his intentions to write a tragedy devoted to the emperor, he did write a tribute to the emperor-philosopher in the form of his final published story, “Daphné”. However, due to Vigny’s fear of what response the public might give to the novel, he repeatedly refused to give the manuscript to his publisher, but rather continued to revise it. Vigny’s fanaticism towards the novel can be seen in the collotype tipped-in to this edition, with repeated cross-outs and rewrites. After his death, Vigny left the manuscript to his friend Louis Ratisbonne. It was not shared with the wider public until 1912 when Fernand Gregh shared the text with readers of the Paris Review. This edition is in very good condition with only minor wear to the boards and a small crack beginning along the front hinge of the cover. The tipped-in page is after the manuscript which was stained by the author in creation, the sheet has some small tears and one which has been expertly repaired. Alfred de Vigny (1797 – 1863). Vigny was one of the key figures in the French Romanticism movement.Leon Gruel (1840-1923). Leon Gruel’s prosperous book binding company was founded in 1811 by his grandfather, Isidore Desforges. Gruel was not the sole proprietor of the company until 1890. During his time, Gruel focused much of his work on imitating the works of old masters, as seen in this book. Gruel specialized in engraving and modeling leather in the Gothic style.       London: John Richmond Ltd,, 1913. Being the Chantrey Prize Poem. Octavo. Original yellow card wrappers printed in dark red. Housed in a custom blue morocco-backed slipcase and matching chemise. An exceptional copy. First edition, first impression, signed by the author on the title page (using his real name); one of 1,000 copies printed, highly uncommon thus.         Collected Poems

London: Macmillan and Co., 1913. First edition, 8vo, (xvi), 275, (1) pp. Inscribed by the author on the fly leaf with a sonnet entitled "Brixton", dated 28th August 1920, and signed below with both his real name and pseudonym, signed also in a different ink under the introduction. Original gilt titled blue cloth, top of the lower joint cracked, some mild rubbing. The sonnet, which starts "See though the oil be low...", was published in the Times in support of the Sinn Fein Mayor of Cork Terence MacSwiney, who was on hunger strike in Brixton Prison following his arrest on charges of sedition. MacSwiney eventually died on 25th October 1920 after refusing food for 74 days. Apart from its inclusion in Padric Colum's "Anthology of Irish Verse" (1922), titled "Terence MacSwiney", other instances of its publication have not been traced. The manuscript found here differs from the printed version by four words. Denson 21.

The Pavilion on the Links [Signed]

1913: Chatto & Windus, 1913. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first edition thus, first printing, first illustrated edition (minor handling soil, rubbing to the spine ends and corners, bump to the rear board's upper edge, illustration facing page 30 a bit proud -- lacking the scarce dust jacket), SIGNED BY ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON on a small clipped piece of paper affixed to the title page; a posthumously published work illustrated by Gordon Browne. The work first appeared in Cornhill Magazine (1880) in the form of a letter and testament. The work, told in nine chapters, was later included in Stevenson's "New Arabian Nights" (1882) without the introductory paragraph which appeared in the Cornhill and with a few other textual changes as well. Arthur Conan Doyle declared it to be "the high-water mark of [StevensonÂ’s] genius" and "the first short story in the worldÂ’". The tale provided the basis for the 1920 silent film "The White Circle" starring Spottiswoode Aitken, Janice Wilson, Harry Northrup, and John Gilbert. A Very Good copy, SIGNED BY ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON on a small clipped piece of paper affixed to the title page.

RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM, Rendered Into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald

London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1913]. First edition with Bull's illustrations. Each page decorated by René Bull, with 10 beautiful tipped-in colour plates within impressive frames printed in blue, numerous smaller pastedown colour vignettes also framed in blue, and many fine decorations and line drawings printed in blue. 4to, publisher?s beautiful buff-coloured cloth lettered on the spine in gilt in a Persian style, the upper cover lettered in red and with elaborate pictorial decorations in brown, red and blue. The text printed on the recto only (other then Quatrain numbers) of 75 numbered leaves, plus plates and prelims. A very bright and appealing copy of this beautiful book. The plates are all pristine and perfect, the text leaves quite clean with only a bit of minor spotting at the prelims and very lightly at the edges, the binding firm and very handsome with only very light general age, a little bubbling to the cloth due to the glue used in production. A WONDERFULLY ILLUSTRATED BOOK, ONE OF OUR FAVORITES AND A BOOK THAT IS NOW BECOMING QUITE HARD TO FIND. Bull's illustrations for the Rubaiyat remain among the most evocative and beautiful ever accomplished. This book alone cements his reputation among the great book illustrators of the early twentieth century. The strikingly romantic text of the poem is greatly enriched by beautiful decorations which adorn every page of text. A truly passionate book.

His luxurious use of color and line carries his audience away into the exotic. The book is especially important in Dulac?s oeuvre as it marked a change unprecedented for Dulac. ?There was now no single position from which an observer could view the entire scene; he must move about within the picture in order to see everything. Dulac began simplifying the elements which make up a picture and turned them into stylized units,...all arranged so as to make up a composition which carried the eye round the painting. To give variety to these compositional units Dulac adopted the Persian emphasis on heavily patterned surfaces, as in an illustration where a robber?s baggy trousers, with an elaborate motif, are used as a flat decorative unit that happens to be trouser shaped. The jeweled dots...are now used by Dulac to make deliberate patterns....?
