Photograph Album Documenting Life at The Interlaken School

La Porte, Indiana: The Interlaken School, 1913. Photograph Album. Very Good. Presentation album is about 4" x 7" with 33 linen leaves each with one mounted photograph measuring about 3" x 5", all captioned in the negative. Photos are in nice shape with some slight curling; one with a small scuff. Minor wear to album. After returning home from attending Heidelberg and Freiburg Universities in Germany, Edward Rumley created one of the first progressive boarding schools in the United States in 1907 "to teach boys to live" by focusing on "hand and muscle work as well as brain work and development of the mind." The curriculum was based upon tenants expounded by Leo Tolstoy and Germanic ideas of a "new order." The school was highly regarded by both educators and the public and quite successful until anti-German sentiment forced its closure when the U.S. entered World War One. Photos include students working in fields and shops, boys constructing school facilities, the baseball and football teams, temporary tent lodging, and more.

        The Passionate Friends.

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited,, 1913. A Novel. Octavo. Original green vertically-ribbed cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt with vine motifs in blind, top edge gilt. Spine gently rolled, extremities lightly bumped and rubbed, very faint spotting to edges and prelims, free endpapers browned. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author "To Vernon Lee. fr[om] H. G. And next time I shall insist" on the front free endpaper. A notable association copy: Vernon Lee was the pseudonym of Violet Paget (1856-1935), art historian, author of supernatural fiction, and Wells's fellow contributor to the Yellow Book. The two became friends in 1904, finding themselves politically as well as artistically aligned. Lee's collection of philosophical essays, Gospels of Anarchy (1908), is dedicated to him: "Of all the subjects she considers in Gospels of Anarchy, H. G. Wells came closest to sharing Vernon Lee's vision of a world ruled by an intellectual elite, the philosopher-kings whom Wells, in A Modern Utopia (1905), called the Samurai" (Colby, Vernon Lee: A Literary Biography, p. 279). The Passionate Friends was Wells's last book before the onset of war in 1914, an event which led to the break-up of his friendship with Lee following a vituperative exchange of letters in the Nation and the Labour Leader which "reverberated internationally" (Colby, p. 289). Wells was an enthusiastic supporter of the Allied cause, whereas Lee was an outspoken pacifist. "The full range of her influence on other writers and artists is, as yet, unappreciated. Vernon Lee deserves to be recognized for the exceptional life she led as a woman of letters" (ODNB).

Original caricature signed, believed to be of the French composer Paul Dukas (1865-1935)

      - Octavo, 189 x 149 mm. Dated 1913. Blue pen and wash. Slightly worn and foxed, especially to verso; creased at upper edge and central fold; remnants of adhesive to upper corners of verso.Together with:A handsome postcard photograph of Caruso seated, stylishly dressed, with cigarette and cane in hand. 136 x 84 mm., with the name of the photographer's studio (Brogi), printed to lower right edge of recto, the name and London address of the publisher Breitkopf and Härtel and "Printed in Germany" printed to verso. Slightly browned; remnants of adhesive to verso. "With his original treatment of traditional forms, his highly inventive approach to musical drama, and his importance as a teacher and writer, [Paul Dukas] occupies a central position in French musical history. Dukas was not only an influence on many French 20th-century composers and others such as Zemlinsky and Berg, but also remains important in his own right. His reputation rests on only a small number of compositions, notably the Piano Sonata, Ariane et Barbe-bleue, the ballet La Péri and L'apprenti sorcier. Dukas's influence as a critic, from 1892 to 1932, can be compared with Debussy's; his informed opinions reveal great sensitivity to the musical and aesthetic changes that took place during the period."       [London]: Hodder & Stoughton, [, 1913]. n. This is an attractively bound copy of Quiller-Couch's third collection of fairy tales, with consistently winning illustrations by Nielsen. It appears to be a variant of the Edition De Luxe, with two more plates than the trade edition, but it is not signed by Nielsen, as the 500 copies of that edition were supposed to be. The cheeky, somewhat campy illustrations here strongly reflect the influence of Aubrey Beardsley, an artist much admired by Nielsen. An English writer and critic of Cornish descent who published under the pseudonym "Q," Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch (1863-1944) is perhaps best rememberd as the compiler of the monumental "Oxford Book of English Verse 1250-1900." The fairy tales in the present volume are "Minon-Minette," "Felicia or the Pot of Pinks," "The Twelve Dancing Princesses," "Rosanie or the Inconstant Prince," "The Man Who Never Laughed," "John and the Ghosts," and "The Czarina's Violet.". 318 x 229 mm. (12 1/2 x 9"). xii, 163, [1] pp. FINE GREEN MOROCCO BY SANGORSKI & SUTCLIFFE (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with single gilt fillet border, upper cover with gilt titling; raised bands, gilt-ruled compartments, turn-ins with single gilt fillet, marbled endleaves, top edge gilt. WITH 26 COLOR PLATES BY KAY NIELSEN tipped-in on gray stock with decorative frames, each with captioned and decorated tissue guards. Two leaves with short closed tear to fore margin, slight browning to edges of leaves, additional trivial defects, but QUITE A FINE COPY, clean internally and in an unworn binding.       London GLENDINING & CO. 1913. GLENDINING & CO.: London, 1913. W. L. BEHRENS COLLECTION Part III SWORD FITTINGS, TSUBA, METAL. Catalogue by Henri L. Joly. This is the ORIGINAL CATALOGUE, printed in 3 VOLUMES. Published by GLENDINING & CO., LONDON, MCMXIII-MCMXIV (1913-1914). FIRST EDITION, LIMITED TO ONLY 100 COPIES, THIS BEING COPY #58. From the Copyright / Limitation page (found in Volume One of this Three Volume Set of Part III of the W.L. Behrens Collection): "Printed to ONE HUNDRED COPIES ONLY of which this is NUMBER 58 by Riddle, Smith and Duffus, Victoria Works, Forest Hill, S.E. / COLLOTYPE PLATES by the Photophane Co., Cranfield Works, Brockley, London, S.E. / PUBLISHED BY Glendining & Co., Ltd., 7 Argyll Street, London, W." Three Volumes, Original Printed Paper Wrappers / Softcovers, 10x12 inches. The three volumes contain 125 pages of Text (pages numbered consecutively) plus a few prelim pages in Volume I (Title-Page, Limitation Page, Preface) plus a Printer's Colophon page at the end of Volume III; each volume also has a front and rear blank endpaper. The three volumes also contain a total of 83 COLLOTYPE PLATES, each printed on its own page and each with its own PRINTED TISSUE GUARD. The original W. L. Behrens Collection was published in four parts, each part consisting of 3 volumes. The four parts are: Part I: Netsuke, Part II: Lacquer and Inro, Part III: Sword Fittings, Tsuba, Metal, and Part IV: Chinese and Japanese Miscellanea, Buddhistic Section and Chinese Antiques, Varia. This original W. L. BEHRENS COLLECTION PART III : METAL, TSUBA, SWORD-FITTINGS, which I am offering, is the most difficult to find and the most sought after of the four part W.L. Behrens collection catalogues. Part III was reprinted in 1966 in a single volume in a smaller format and without the dazzling quality of collotype plates (a much cheaper printing process was used). The 1966 reprint can be found, but this ORIGINAL 3 VOLUME CATALOGUE, printed in an edition of only 100 numbered copies, is almost Impossible to Find. The set comes in a custom made box with blue cloth covered boards, leather spine label titled in gilt (H. L. Joly / The W. L. BEHRENS COLLECTION / MCMXIIII - MCMXIV), snaps on the front flaps, and inner tie strings. I do not know who had the custom box made. CONDITION: The three volumes are in VERY GOOD condition. The covers have some spine creases from use, light wear to the spine ends, light corner creases, some spine sunning and some offsetting; the front cover of Volume III has a horizontal crease across its face and a 2 1/2 inch closed tear starting at its bottom edge that has been repaired on the backside with clear tape; internally, there are some light signs of handling, a small crease or scrape, and a few corner tip creases here and there; Volume III has a crease across its front blank endpaper; overall the inner pages are tight, bright, clean and unmarked. ALL the Collotype Plates and their printed tissue guards are present and gorgeous. A solid, complete, very nice set. The custom made case is in Good Condition with some scrapes, rubs and general wear; the leather spine label is worn and has some scratches; overall the case is solid and still doing the job its previous owner had it made to do. SCARCE. INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: This item will be heavy to ship and will require substantial additional shipping charges. After placing your order you will be notified of the additional charges and be able to accept or reject them before your payment is processed. Thanks. Very Good

Photographs of the Milky Way and Comets made with the Six-inch Willard Lens and Crocker Telescope during the Years 1892 to 1895.

Sacramento Richardson 1913 - (30 x 23,5 cm). 46 S. Mit 129 Tafeln. Original-Leinwandband. (Publ. of the Lick Observatory. Vol. XI). Erste Ausgabe. - "Of great importance was the beginning Barnard made in photographing the Milky Way. It can fairly be said that, although photography had been used in astronomy to a limited and somewhat experimental extent, it was not until Barnard's wholesale use of it that the technique became a vital and spectacular part of regular astronomical observing. His initial labors in this area were not easy, because funds for equipment were scarce, and he was the junior member under a somewhat crusty and autocratic director, E. S. Holden. Barnard was obliged to use a small telescopic camera, contrived from a 2 1/2-inch portrait lens with a focal length of thirty-one inches, initially strapped to the side of a 6 1/2-inch telescope for want of a suitable mounting and guiding arrangement. With so small a telescope, exposures were necessarily very long; moreover, photographic materials were still rather primitive and insensitive. Nevertheless, Barnard's Milky Way photographs revealed a wealth of both bright and dark nebulae, and star-clouds hitherto unknown. The long exposures (up to six hours) were made with extreme difficulty and required great patience, for the guiding telescopes were without illuminated reticles. He was obliged to use fine iron wires for cross hairs, and to throw the image of a bright star out of focus, maintaining equal intensity in all four quadrants separated by the wires' silhouette. Many of these remarkable photographs of the Milky Way and clusters, as well as of comets, were later assembled into Volume 11 of the Publications of the Lick Observatory" (DSB). - Vorsatz gestempelt und im Falz gebrochen. Zu I: Erste Ausgabe von Moseleys berühmter Arbeit zur Bestimmung der Ordnungszahl der Elemente, ein Meilenstein in der Entwicklung der Atomphysik. - "Moseley, working under Rutherford an Manchester, used the method of X-ray spectroscopy devised by the Braggs to calulate variations in the wavelength of the rays emitted by each element. These he was able to arrange in a series according to the nuclear charge of each element. Thus if the nuclear charge of hydrogen is 1, in helium it is 2, in lithium 3, and so on by regular progression to uranium as 92. These figures Moseley called atomic numbers. He pointed out that they also represented a corresponding increase in extra-nuclear electrons and that it is the number and arrangement of these electrons rather than the atomic weight that determines the properties of an element. It was now possible to base the periodical table on a firm foundation, and to state with confidence that the number of elements up to uranium is limited to 92. When Moseley's table was completed, six atomic numbers had no corresponding elements; but Moseley himself was able to predict the nature of four of the missing elements"(PMM). - DSB 9, 542; PMM 407; Norman 1559. - Zu II: Erste Ausgabe dieser bedeutenden Arbeit zur Verbesserung von Rutherfords Atommodell. - "Bohr's three-part paper postulated the existence of stationary states of an atomic system whose behavior could be described using classical mechanics, while the transition of the system from one stationary state to another would represent a non-classical process accompanied by emission or absorption of one quantum of homogeneous radiation, the frequency of which was related to its energy by Planck’s equation" (Norman). - DSB 2, 239; PMM 411; Norman 258. - Vorsätze gestempelt.         IN POWDER AND CRINOLINE. Old Fairy Tales Retold by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch

London: Hodder and Stoughton, (1913). DE LUXE FIRST EDITION LIMITED, AND SIGNED BY THE ARTIST, KAY NIELSEN, number 11 of only 500 numbered copies. With 26 beautiful colour plates tipped onto highly decorated printed borders and behind captioned tissue-guards, decorated title-page in red and gray on gray stock, decorated headlines to every page and numerous drawings within the text by Kay Nielsen. Large 4to, in the publisher's de luxe dark green full vellum, the upper cover and spine with elaborate gilt lettering and pictorial decorations designed by Nielsen, decorated endpapers from Nielsen's designs, t.e.g., others untrimmed as issued. xii, 164 pp. + plates. A very handsome copy of this scarce issue, the green vellum very well preserved, bright and fresh with vivid gilt. The plates all very fine, the text in excellent state, the free-flies with some of the usual offsetting caused by the adhesive used under the pastedown. FIRST EDITION DE LUXE. THE SCARCE SIGNED LIMITED EDITION OF ONE OF THE GREAT BOOKS OF THE GOLDEN ERA. This wonderfully produced De Luxe issue also has two colourplates that were not included in the trade issue. This was Nielsen's first book, commissioned by Hodder and Stoughton in 1911 upon Nielsen's moving to England from his native Denmark. It was published in the heady and decorative days before the First World War. It represents perhaps the peak of his illustrative powers (though some would argue in favor of "East of the Sun West of the Moon"). The illustrations were reproduced by a 4-colour process, in contrast to many of the illustrations prepared by his contemporaries that characteristically utilized a traditional 3-colour process. In the United States the book was issued under the title "The Twelve Dancing Princesses." Whichever title you prefer the book is the first of only five titles Nielsen would illustrate in total. He was lured away from book illustration by theatrical work in Copenhagen, and then later by Walt Disney. At the Disney Studios his work was used in the "Ave Maria" and "Night on Bald Mountain" sequences of Fantasia. Nielsen was renowned at the Disney studio for his concept art and he contributed artwork for many Disney films.

Perhaps the most iconic of children's rhymes are given the wonderful addition of 98 of Arthur Rackham's colour paintings and line drawings. A stunning book, and this an exceptionally beautiful copy. MOTHER GOOSE was an especially fond undertaking for Rackham, who's intent to please children with this offering was extremely successful. He chose each of the poems which would be included in the work, and featured himself in the opening initial to the first rhyme with a whimsical self-portrait. The drawing of 'the house that Jack built' was modeled from his own home in Chalcot Gardens. The colourplate 'As I was going to St. Ives' features another self-portrait, with Rackham being terrified by seven witches, black cats and vast multitude of kittens!

Lost in the Arctic Being the Story of the 'Alabama' Expedition, 1909 - 1912 ÑSigned and inscribed by Mikkelsen on the front free endleaf.

London: William Heinemann 1913 - London: William Heinemann, 1913. First Edition. Sm4to (10" x 7"), (xviii), 400 pp., Index. Profusely illustrated with 111 photographic images and large fold-out colour map bound at rear "Showing the Route of Capt. Ejnar Mikkelsen's Expedition 1909-1912". Original publisher's green cloth with ruled border; stamped in bright silver with title and Arctic scene on front board, title and spine silver with beginning loss, publisher's colophon embossed on rear board, frontis of Mikkelsen with tissue guard. A Very Good+ copy with no foxing, folds or tears. Prior owner's nautical book plate inside from cover, some soiling to boards. An unusually clean and bright copy with tight un-cracked hinges. Signed and inscribed by Mikkelsen on the ffe. A first person account of the 'Alabama' Expedition, 1909-1912 lead by Captain Ejnar Mikkelsen. This is a well written and extensively illustrated account of a three year long expedition responsible for charting much of the east coast of Arctic Greenland. The crew was small and the Alabama a small ship which would eventually be broken down for its wood. Mikkelsen set out on this grueling three year journey which ultimately proved to be a testament to human survival and endurance. The book is a very good read and a very good account of survival, Eskimo culture and Arctic geology in Greenland. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

LOST IN THE ARCTIC: Being the Story of the 'Alabama' Expedition, 1909-1912

London: William Heinemann, 1913. First edition. With a frontispiece portrait of the author and 111 reproduced photographs on 36 plates, most double-sided, plus a large colour fold-out map. Large 8vo, original dark blue-green cloth lettered and ruled in silver on spine, the upper cover lettered and with pictorial vignette in blind. xviii, 400 pp. A very nice copy, the text solid and sound, the plates are all quite fine, the cloth is well preserved and still handsome with just a bit of expected age mellowing, very little of the usual spotting. A HANDSOME COPY. The Alabama expedition charted much of the east coast of Arctic Greenland but was far from a simple mapping voyage. Its primary purpose was to recover the journals from the ill-fated Danmarks Expedition. With a small party on a tiny ship (which would be broken down for wood) Mikkelsen set out on a grueling three year testament to the human survival instinct. He succeeded in recovering the journals while surviving many hardships, such as two winters spent in a small cottage made from salvaged timbers and planking from the Alabama before being rescued, in the direst of extremities, by a Norwegian whaler in summer 1912. This is his well written and extensively illustrated account. Interestingly, the "Alabama cottage" has survived, intact, and was photographed during a visit by Danish Navy inspection ship Ejnar Mikkelsen in September 2010.

The Conquest; The Story of a Negro Pioneer. By The Pioneer

Woodruff Press, Lincoln, Neb 1913 - frontis (portrait), photos, 311p. Blue cloth, lettered in gilt on backstrip and front cover. 20cm. Recased (new endpapers). Some bubbling/wrinkling or cloth on back cover. Ends of joints scuffed. Extremities rubbed (with minor fraying at corners). Spine slightly sloped. Scattered marginal soiling on text-pages. As with other copies we've had, the photo listed as facing page 251 actually faces page 240. The photo listed as facing page 241 (and usually found facing page 224) is not present in this copy. An unusual copy of the first edition of his first novel. Other copies we've owned (and almost all of those we've seen described) have been lettered in white. We find no evidence in our copy that the missing photo was ever pasted in at page 224 or elsewhere. The errors in placement of photographs in the first edition have long seemed mysterious. We believe that this gold lettered binding represent the first state of the first edition and that when, for some reason (perhaps cost), the cover lettering was changed to white, the missing photo was noticed and inserted in the wrong place since another photo was already misplaced between pages 240/241). While we have no corroboration for this, it provides a reasonable explanation for the rare gilt lettering and the odd misplacement of the photos. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
