        Arthur Rackham's Book of Pictures

1913. With Forty-Four Mounted Color PlatesIncluding 'Cupid's Alley'RACKHAM, Arthur. Arthur Rackham's Book of Pictures. With an Introduction by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch. London: William Heinemann. n.d. [1913]. Edition de Luxe. Limited to 1,130 numbered copies, signed by the artist (this copy being no. 165). Large quarto (11 1/2 x 9 inches; 292 x 232 mm). 43, [1] pp. Forty-four color plates (including frontispiece) mounted on tan paper, with descriptive tissue guards, and ten drawings in black and white.Publisher's pictorial white buckram. Front cover pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt, spine lettered in gilt, decorative end-papers, top edge gilt, others uncut. Spine darkened and gilt somewhat dull, a few small marks on upper cover, some very slight wear at top of spine, still a very good copy."Arthur Rackham's Book of Pictures brings together a number of drawings unrelated in theme. Most of them, it is true, are drawings of the supernatural, of goblins, elves and fairies, and many are based on actual fairy tales; but there are also delightful straightforward drawings of children at the seaside or in the Broad Walk, Kensington Gardens; there is also the well-known 'Cupid's Alley' [the original of which is in the Tate Gallery], which illustrates verses by Austin Dobson, and there are subject pictures and landscapes of wide variety. It was important that such a book should be drawn together by an introductory essay, and natural for Rackham to invite [J.M.] Barrie to write it. The answer he received was cordial but disappointing: '24 June 1913. Dear Rackham, I wish I could, but I have promised to write two introductions this autumn, and had better not undertake more. Added to which I would be very bad at it as I have no skill in criticism. I am very glad to hear of the book and look forward to it. You have no greater admirer than myself, and few there are more warmly indebted to you. 'Yours very sincerely J.M. Barrie'. Rackham was fortunate in obtaining Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch as a substitute for Barrie. 'Q' not only admired Rackham's work; he also thoroughly understood a child's instinctive longing for the imaginative and fanciful. 'To this instant, constant, intellectual need of childhood no one in our day,' he wrote, 'has ministered so bountifully or so whole-heartedly as Mr. Rackham.' And Quiller-Couch was happy, too, in associating the random, impressionistic nature of much of the Book of Pictures with 'the wayward visions that tease every true artist's mind, while he bends over the day's work'". (Derek Hudson. Arthur Rackham. His Life and Work, pp. 97-98).Latimore and Haskell, pp. 41-42. Riall, p. 118.

1913Paris, Bibliothèque-Charpentier, Fasquelle, 1913. Provenance : J. Borderel. FINE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST.

        L'Appel des Armes

1913Paris, L'Opinion, 1913. On joint l'édition Oudin, brochée. De toute rareté. (manque à la BNF).         Grimm's Fairy Tales.

London: Henry Frowde & Hodder & Stoughton,, 1913. Illustrated in colour by Noel Pocock. Large octavo. Original cream-coloured cloth, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in gilt, top edge grey, pictorial endpapers. Frontispiece and 22 colour plates by Noel Pocock mounted on brown paper. Binding lightly soiled, a couple of corners slightly bumped, front inner joint cracked but sound. A very good copy. First Pocock edition, first impression. "The work of Noel Pocock (active 1919-1930) displays the influence of the American illustrator Maxfield Parrish. Centred heavily on the figure, Pocock's work reveals a realistic treatment, despite the exaggerated emotions and expression; small touches of pattern and colour also pull in the viewer's attention. The simple settings of Pocock's illustrations are enhanced by a canny use of lighting to add dimension in darkly wooded areas" ( Jeffrey A. Menges, Once Upon a Time...: A Treasury of Classic Fairy Tale Illustrations, 2008, p. 111). Ralph Noel Pocock (1880-1955) illustrated P. G. Wodehouses's first three book as well as an edition of Robinson Crusoe (1910). Surprisingly, neither Alan Horne nor Simon Houfe mention him in their respective encyclopaedias of 19th and 20th century illustrators.

Scott's Last Expedition. In two volumes.

First edition; 8vo; original ribbed dark blue cloth, upper covers and spines lettered in gilt, top edges gilt. Volume 1. Being the Journals of Captain R.F. Scott, R.N; C.V.O. Volume 2. Being the Reports of the Journeys & the Scientific Work Undertaken by Dr E. A. Wilson and the Surviving Members of the Expedition. Arranged by Leonard Huxley. With a preface by Sir Clements R. Markham. With photogravure frontispieces, 6 original sketches in photogravure by Wilson, 18 coloured plates (16 from drawings by Wilson), 260 full page and smaller illustrations, from photographs taken by Herbert Ponting, and other members of the expedition; panoramas and maps. This is undoubtedly the most widely known of all Antarctic expeditions and publications. Readers, having absorbed Scott's account of the expedition in the first volume, would have discovered in the second volume a host of first-hand accounts deserving of more weight today: Cherry-Garrard's account of the Winter Journey, Victor Campbell's narrative of the Northern Party, Griffith Taylor on the Western Journeys, Raymond Priestley on the ascent of Erebus, preliminary scientific reports from Edward Wilson's staff and throughout the unrivalled photography of Herbert Ponting. Fine, spine ends bumped, a little wear to the extremities, some very slight spotting to the edge of the text blocks and ownership inscription on the front free endpaper of volume one. A lovely set not often found in this condition. Taurus 77.

Attractive inscribed photographic portrait on textured paper by Howard Coster.

London: Howard Coster,, [early 1930s]. Mounted, glazed and framed at Goodspeed's Book Shop (overall size 425 x 323 mm; image 295 x 205 mm). A few light scuffs to frame, slight oxidisation to areas of margin otherwise in excellent condition. Signed by Shaw at the top of the image and by Coster (in pencil) on the mount; additionally inscribed by Shaw on the mount: "To Mary Lawton, G. Bernard Shaw, 13/11/36". An excellent association: Shaw had known the American actress Mary Lawton since before the Great War: he directed her in the first Broadway production of his play The Philanderer (performed at the Little Theater in 1913-14). In February 1922 she was cast in Back to Methuselah. In the 1930s she collaborated with the great Polish pianist Ignacy Paderewski on The Paderewski Memoirs (London and New York 1938), to which Shaw contributed a glowing letter of praise ("written after reading the American edition... [and] intended for publication" Laurence B280): "Though you have deserted the stage for literature your impersonation of Paderewski in this book of his and yours must rank with your greatest achievements as an actress. It has every quality of a great autobiography. It actually sent me to the index of the four volumes of my musical criticisms of 50 years ago to see what I had said when Paderewski swooped on London and was immediately drawn as an archangel by Burne-Jones". Mary Lawton was also a friend of Mark Twain's daughter Clara Clemens. A fine portrait of Shaw, probably taken in the early 30s, by Howard Coster, one of the most renowned portrait photographers of the day who "photographed most of the leading figures in politics, literature and the arts... his work was frequently published in magazines" (National Portrait Gallery online). This portrait is used in reverse as the frontispiece to Dan H. Laurence's bibliography of Shaw.
