        Mother Goose

London: William Heinemann, 1913. - Hey! Diddle Diddle, The Cat and the Fiddle [RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. Mother Goose. The Old Nursery Rhymes. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. London: William Heinemann, [1913].Edition de Luxe. Limited to 1,130 numbered copies (of which this is number 880), signed by the artist. Large quarto (11 3/8 x 9 inches; 290 x 228 mm.). xi, [1, blank], 159, [1] pp. Thirteen color plates mounted on brown paper, with descriptive tissue guards, and eighty-five drawings in black and white (one mounted on brown paper, with descriptive tissue guard).Original white buckram pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Slight darkening to spine, fore-edges of pp. 41-44 poorly opened. A very good copy. With the original Leicester Galleries Exhibition slip loosely laid-in."So far as titles go we move into a different key with Mother Goose, a book constructed in 1913 from a series of plates and line drawings which had appeared and would appear in St Nicholas between 1912 and 1914. These poems were chosen by Rackham, presumably in terms of themes and subjects he wished to illustrate: this would account for the consistently good quality of the many plates and of the numerous line drawings. Among the most noticeable of pictures in this book are 'Hark! Hark! the dogs do bark!" which has Rackham delighting in rags and tatters a deal more colourful than might be expected in our own age, and the altogether curious colour plate 'Old Mother Goose', remarkable for its composition, in which the black forests and borders merge to form an underlying pictorial structure reminiscent of Nolde or Munch, the colour also being virtually expressionist in feeling. This plate is an aberration, so far as the rest of the book is concerned, for within this we have the usual Rackham motley of lovely women, Rackham-faced gnomes, and all the images we might expect of the title. Quite appropriately Rackham illustrates 'As I was going to St Ives' with his own portrait, in a situation which is almost akin to a schizophrenic's dream, with the dance of seven witches, and the multiples of seven cats and kittens." (Fred Gettings. Arthur Rackham, pp.131-132).Latimore and Haskell, pp. 40-41. Riall, p. 115.

[LARGE PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF CAVALRY TRAINING AND MANEUVERS OF THE 1st CAVALRY, NEW YORK NATIONAL GUARD, PRIOR TO WORLD WAR I]

[Connecticut, New York, 1913. 357 silver gelatin photographs, including 9 multi-print panoramas. Oblong folio. Contemporary black leather cord-tied photo album, edges slightly worn. Photos mounted directly onto black paper supports, with a significant number captioned in white ink. Some age toning to images, but overall very good. An extensive collection of over three hundred and fifty silver gelatin photographs depicting training, maneuvers, and camp life for the 1st Cavalry unit of the New York National Guard in 1912 and 1913, just prior to the outbreak of World War I. The photo album contains images covering two large-scale National Guard operations, the "Connecticut Maneuver Campaign" in 1912, and a training camp at Montauk Point, Long Island in 1913. The 1912 war games involved over 20,000 troops that assembled up and down the coast of Connecticut, and culminated in a simulated assault on New York City. In June 1913, significant portions of the New York National Guard Cavalry were called to Montauk for nine days of training that, a contemporary New York Times article reported, "For thoroughness and practical details never has been experienced in the guard of any State. The programme covers every detail of instructions to fit troops for war." In addition to many photos documenting the movements and activities of the Cavalry Guard during these two exercises, there are many images depiciting routine army camp life, horseback marches, and numerous individual and group portraits of soldiers in uniform. In all, this album comprises a nearly comprehensive encapsulation of military life and training for one group of National Guardsmen during a time of rising European tensions that would eventually lead to World War I.

        CHANCE

1913. [one of only 51 copies] A Tale in Two Parts. London: Methuen & Co., (1913). 8 pp ads dated Autumn 1913. Original green cloth with gilt-decorated spine. First Edition, first (pre-publication) state, with the INTEGRAL title page reading "First Published in 1913" on the verso. CHANCE is not one of Conrad's best-known tales today, but for him personally, it was his most important work (along with his first, ALMAYER'S FOLLY): from about 1904 to 1912 he was in financial difficulties that brought on depression, but CHANCE was a huge hit that revived his finances, revived his spirits, and also revived interest in (and re-printings of) his previous books.~CHANCE is also the most complex, bibliographically, of all of Conrad's works... The book was printed in late 1913, and a small number (the publisher indicated 51) were delivered to associates and critics -- these copies have an integral (not tipped-in) title page dated 1913 on the verso, and are further identifiable by the 44mm vertical gap between Conrad's name and the quotation on the title page. However, a binder's strike delayed actual publication until 1914, so in all remaining copies, the 1913 title leaf was excised and a "First Published in 1914" (or later, "First Published in 1913") cancel leaf was tipped in -- which has a vertical gap of only 29.5mm.~As for variations that appear (without known precedence) among copies of this edition: this one reads "METHUEN" at the foot of the spine, it does have the closing quotation marks after "Narcissus" on the half-title verso, and it does have Lunn's THE HARROVIANS on page 6 of the ads.~This is a handsome copy with scarcely any wear -- fine except that there is minor foxing of the wove paper toward each end of the book; the front pastedown bears the bookplate of Harold Nickson. The true-1913 CHANCE is one of Conrad's most sought-after works. Cagle A17a1.

Description of the educational exhibit of cocoa and chocolate. [Together with:] Educational exhibit. Cocoa and chocolate prepared by Walter Baker & Co

Walter Baker & Co., Ltd., Dorchester, MA 1913 - Oblong 8vo, pp. 39, [1], followed by 6 high-quality chromolithograph plates of Walter Baker products; 5 other full-page illustrations; fine in original maroon cloth, gilt-lettered on upper cover. The educational exhibit consists of what presumably is a salesman's wooden lacquered case (approx. 9½" x 5½" x 3½"), with a hinged lid on top, and a brass plaque and pull; mounted inside the lid are 4 Baker products, and inside the box itself are four apothecary viles, each still containing Baker products! Uncommon salesman's sample case and companion handbook which were released to promote the Walter Baker "health-giving breakfast cocoa and chocolate." The text explains the transformation of the cocoa seeds from the raw material, describes the early uses of cocoa and chocolate, a description and analysis of the cocoa seeds, the cocoa tree and the gathering of the crop. The four vials represent the various stages of cocoa production, and the cocoa tin mounted 1nside the lid preserves the trademarked chocolate server logo, La Belle Chocolatiere, adopted by the company in 1883 after a painting by the Swiss artists Jean-Etienne Liotard. Founded in 1780 the Walter Baker Company grew throughout the 19th century and into the 20th becoming one of the largest in the United States. Purchased by the Forbes syndicate in 1896, the brand was eventually absorbed in 1979 by Kraft Foods. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Mother Goose

1913. Hey! Diddle Diddle, The Cat and the Fiddle…[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. With the original Leicester Galleries Exhibition slip loosely laid-in."So far as titles go … we move into a different key with Mother Goose, a book constructed in 1913 from a series of plates and line drawings which had appeared and would appear in St Nicholas between 1912 and 1914. 40-41. Riall, p. 115.

        A Boy's Will

New York: Henry Holt And Company, 1913 First American edition, second issue, with "And" on page 14, in Crane' first state binding with fine linen cloth and white endpapers. Inscribed by Frost on the verso of page x with the holograph poem "Misgiving" and signed "Robert Frost / 1921". Publisher's dark blue cloth, lettered and ruled in gilt. Very good, with some light toning to the sine, some wear to the spine ends, light rubbing to the otherwise bright boards, fresh gilt, former owner's inscription to the front free endpaper, spine racked and holding at the half-title, bottom edge of the first few pages slightly chewed at the spine tail, otherwise clean interior. Overall, a clean copy with an excellent inscription by Frost. Crane A2.1. Frost inscribed this copy of A Boy's Will with the poem "Misgiving," which was not published in book form until his 1923 collection New Hampshire. This poem was first published serially in the Yale Review in January 1921 along with "Snow Dust," "The Onset," and "A Star in a Stone-Boat." Notably, Frost likely inscribed this copy of A Boy's Will slightly after the initial publication of "Misgiving" in The Yale Review. First published in London by David Nutt in 1913 only two months after Frost moved to Beaconsfield, A Boy's Will is Frost's first collection of poetry, most of which was comprised while he lived in Derry. It includes 34 poems, including "Ghost House," "Wind and the Window Flower," "Asking for Roses," "Waiting Afield at Dusk," "The Demiurge's Laugh," and "My Butterfly," among others. An immediate success, A Boy's Will established Frost's literary reputation, which was solidified with his 1914 North of Boston.. Inscribed by Author. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good.
