ALS to John Fleming about Kipling's sister, 1913

      - Autograph Letter Signed (?Rudyard Kipling?) to John Fleming [husband of Kipling?s sister Alice ?Trix? Fleming], 3 pages 8vo, Bateman?s, Burwash, Sussex, 20 September 1913. A letter about the care of Kipling?s sister Trix?s finances, also with a number of references to Kipling?s son (?my boy John?) who died in the First Wold War two years later. ?We?ve been away for a few days and getting John off to school or I?d have answered your letter before. Trix?s account at the Bank stands as follows: (bank deposit; interest; payments since deposit etc. [The total reading:] £520: 19. 1 ¼) I have also put the care of any change in investment of the money to George MacDonald [. . .] I am sorry that a higher rate of interest cannot me obtained for the present but I think you will agree that it would be best to postpone any change until a little later. I am hoping to get to Trix when she comes to Harrow. I should have gone when I was in Suffolk but my time there was cut up by my boy John?s illness. He went down with a bad go of mumps after he was officially supposed to have had them at school and all our arrangements were knocked on the head & all visitors had to be put off. So we had barely a fortnight in the house we had taken near Lowestoft.? Trix Kipling was the younger sister of Rudyard Kipling. They were sent away from India (and their parents), as was the custom, to attend school in England when he was six and she, three. Their school-house at Southsea later became famous as the House of Desolation (so-called in Kipling's ?Baa baa, black sheep?). Trix and Kipling were especially close in their childhood and early adulthood and, although various complications - geographical distance; Kipling?s fame; and Trix?s struggle with mental illness - were at times obstacles to this, they remained devoted siblings throughout their lives. PROVENANCE: This was partof a Kipling family archive that came downthrough Helen MacDonald, a great niece of Rudyard Kipling's mother Alice MacDonald. Alice's three sisters were married to Edward Burne Jones, Edward Poynter (Artists) and Alfred Baldwin (father of 20th century British Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin). [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        A Boy's Will

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, FIRST BINDING. Presentation copy inscribed by Frost "Margot Adamson from Robert Frost Oct 4 1913." Original bronze pebbled cloth lettered in gilt (Binding A). Fine. Half morocco case. Adamson was a 16-year-old Scot who became a translator and author of several volumes of poetry, including A Year of War, and other Poems, published by David Nutt in 1917. In 1914 Frost wrote a generous letter to Adamson discussing her poems. He concluded, "I feel everywhere the energy of your poetry. I expect all sorts of fine things of you." Thanks to David Lowenherz for this information concerning Adamson. This is a magnificent presentation copy of the first issue of Frost's first regularly published book, preceded only by Twilight, of which only two copies were printed for the author, one of which was destroyed. Frost arrived in England in 1912, and it was there that he first achieved literary recognition. While living on a farm in Beaconsfield, he made frequent trips to London where he made the acquaintance of the literary circle based around Harold Monro's Poetry Bookshop. Encouraged by Ezra Pound and others, Frost submitted his manuscript to the firm of David Nutt, which issued it in several bindings. This is one of no more than 350 copies in the first binding. A sparkling presentation copy of this landmark of 20th-century American verse.

THE PRINCETON BRIC-A-BRAC, Volume XXXIX - XLIII (Class of 1915-19)

Princeton, New Jersey: Junior Class of Princeton University, 1913. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. All five volumes in this run include material about the undergraduate activities of F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940), a member of Princeton's Class of 1917. After graduating from the Newman School in 1913, Fitzgerald enrolled at Princeton where he honed his craft as a writer before dropping out in 1917 to join the Army. Included here are portraits of Fitzgerald with the Class of 1917, the board of the Princeton Tiger, and alongside the other members of the Triangle Club, for whom Fitzgerald wrote "Fie! Fie! Fi-Fi!" (1914) and "Safety First" (1916). Both musical comedies receive extensive reviews, complete with photographs from each production, in Volume XLII and XLIII, respectively. There are also reference to Fitzgerald's involvement with the Frenau Club, the Minnesota Club, and the University Cottage Club. Oblong octavos. Original black buckram bindings, with gilt stamping. Mild foxing to the prefatory and concluding leaves. The bindings of the first four volumes are a little shaken. Some general shelfwear, with a bit of sun fading to Volume XXIX and occasional scuffing to Volume XLI; else about very good. Scarce.

Marcus Aurelius. Latin: Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus; [26 April 121 - 17 March 180 AD) was Roman Emperor from 161 to 180. He ruled with Lucius Verus as co-emperor from 161 until Verus' death in 169. Marcus Aurelius was the last of the so-called Five Good Emperors. He was a practitioner of Stoicism, and his untitled writing, commonly known as the Meditations, is the most significant source of the modern understanding of ancient Stoic philosophy. During his reign, the Empire defeated a revitalized Parthian Empire in the East: Aurelius' general Avidius Cassius sacked the capital Ctesiphon in 164. In central Europe, Aurelius fought the Marcomanni, Quadi, & Sarmatians with success during the Marcomannic Wars, although the threat of the Germanic tribes began to represent a troubling reality for the Empire. A revolt in the East led by Avidius Cassius failed to gain momentum and was suppressed immediately. Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, written in Greek while on campaign between 170 and 180, are still revered as a literary monument to a philosophy of service and duty, describing how to find and preserve equanimity in the midst of conflict by following nature as a source of guidance and inspiration.

        The Interpretation of Dreams.

The MacMillan Company, New York 1913 - First edition in English of this cornerstone of psychoanalysis. Octavo, original blue cloth. In very good condition with light rubbing to the crown of the spine. Introduction by A.A. Brill. "Unquestionably Freud's greatest single work. It contains all the basic components of psychoanalytic theory and practice: the erotic nature of dreams, the 'Oedipus complex,' the libido and the rest; all related to the background of the 'unconscious,' later to be called the 'sub-conscious" (PMM 389). First published in German in 1899 Die Traumdeutung has "ranked Freud with Darwin and Marx. This book remained for Freud his greatest achievement." He later wrote that it contains "'the most valuable of all the discoveries it has been my good fortune to make. Insight such as this falls to one's lot but once in a lifetime" (Grolier 87). Freud revised the book at least eight times and, in the third edition, added an extensive section which treated dream symbolism very literally, following the influence of Wilhelm Stekel. Freud said of this work, "Insight such as this falls to one's lot but once in a lifetime." Listed on Modern Library 100 greatest non-fiction books of the twentieth century.
