Post binding. 58 black-and-white photographs, the majority measuring 6.75" x 4.75" approx., mounted recto and verso to 29 cloth-hinged card leaves. Five additional photographs loosely laid-in. An early photo album of Mrs. Dow's School for Girls, a college preparatory boarding school in Briarcliff Manor, NY. Given quality and uniformity of images, likely one of a small number produced for students of one of the institution's first graduating classes, perhaps as a yearbook or memento of the theater club. Mary Elizabeth Dunning Dow, upon resigning her position as head of the prestigious Miss Porter's School in Farmington, CT in 1903, and at the bequest of prominent Briarcliff businessman Walter M. Law, took with her the majority of that institution's students and teachers to begin this school. Interim classes were conducted in Law's famed resort complex Briarcliff Lodge until construction of a new campus was completed in 1905. Included here are three, circa-1906 interior views of the newly finished Dow Hall and several additional views of dorm room, gymnasium and other interiors at Farmington and Briarcliffe. The remaining images are largely of student body group shots and theater department productions. Each is sharp, clear, and well composed, with theater shots often exhibiting elaborate, sometimes unusual set and costume designs. The … [Click Below for Full Description]

1906. Hobbs, John Oliver (Pseudonym of Pearl Mary Teresa Craigie) - John Hobbes - The Dream and the Business - 1906 UK first edition published by T. Fisher Unwin. Not an uncommon first edition, but very uncommon In the dust jacket, which utilises the same Aubrey Beardsley artwork(originally purchased by Unwin for an earlier poster) as the book and also features advertising for other Unwin titles to both the rear panel and flap. Despite the mention of a business in the title, and the woman in the illustration gazing longingly across a street at a bookshop, this is sadly not a story about a woman who dreams of owning and running a bookshop, it seems from a quick skim to be a novel revolving around love, marriage and human relations, though I may have missed the crucial sections that mention the bookshop. The book is firmly bound in the publisher's cream and blue cloth, lettered and illustrated in red, black, yellow, pink and green, the extremities are bumped and rubbed. The text block is toned and slightly foxed. The dust jacket is the original, it is toned and grubby with areas of loss, rubbing and creasing, there are also splits at the folds and closed tears, however it has been professionally conserved with the judicious application of tissue to the reverse. Kipling, Rudyard - Ellen Terry interest
Macmillan. First printing, 1906. Red cloth gilt in dust jacket, with actress Ellen Terry's bookplate. Good+ in very good dust jacket, some discoloration to rear board and light soil and spottiness to endpapers, top outer corner of text a bit bumped, small engraved bookplate on flyleaf, Ellen Terry's bookplate on pastedown; dust jacket very good indeed with light soil to front panel and very light edge-loss to spine ends. Illustrated children's fantasy stories with Shakespeare's fairy character Puck from Midsummer Night's Dream a connecting motif. Terry's first role as an eight year old was as Puck, in 1856. Terry was known to recite Kipling's verse on occasion, and Kipling attended some of her performances, but there is no evidence that Terry and Kipling were particularly close. Nonetheless, given Terry's childhood role as Puck, an excellent association copy and very rare to find early Kipling in a dust jacket. Good / very good. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

TOLSTOY, L[eo] N.
Posrednik, 1906. First Russian Edition. Autobiographical essay on the author's spiritual evolution penned shortly after Tolstoy turned to Christian anarchism in his late-middle age. Inspired by his reading of Schopenhauer's "The World as Will and Representation," the author describes emerging from a midlife crisis and a break from his literary past. Tolstoy was raised in the Greek Orthodox Church, though by his teenage years was no longer practicing his childhood faith. Instead, the author writes early on in this essay, "I endeavoured to reach perfection in intellectual attainments" (as quoted from Thomas Sharper Knowlson's Leo Tolstoy: A Biographical and Critical Study (1904), p. 42). By late middle age the prospect of reaching literary and intellectual perfection no longer appealed to Tolstoy, who instead turned towards spiritual introspection. As he describes it, his melancholia immediately lessened when he said "God is life," though the author would not write of his Christian beliefs until the publication of What I Believe (also known as My Religion) in 1884. The influence of Tolstoy's religious works have been far-reaching, especially in their bid for nonviolent resistance, the most notable reader and practitioner arguably being Mahatma Gandhi, who wrote to Tolstoy after reading his Letter to a Hindu (1908). The present work would eventually serve as an introduction to a series of three works on religion which Tolstoy himself considered to be his best and most important work. First published in Russkaya Mysl, no. 5, in 1882, Ispoved was almost immediately banned by the … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Booker T. Washington]
Tuskegee, Alabama: Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, 1906. Letter. Approx. 8" x 10" letter handwritten on Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute letterhead. The letter written by one of Washington's student (as was commonly done) is signed by Booker T. Washington at the bottom. A few small brown stains on the letter. A previous owner of this letter typed a short note, cut it down to size and pasted at the bottom of the letter directly below the signature. The note reads "You will notice that this letter was written by Dr. Booker T. Washington, famous Negro Educator and founder of Tuskegee Institute in 1906 before the Institute had typewriters and letters were writte(n) by students and signed by Dr. Washington." This particular letter is a request for a donation to help cover the expenses of students tuition -"I am writing you because I thought you would be interested in helping us to meet the tuition expenses of our students. The students pay their own board partly in cash and partly in labor but are unable to pay the tuition in addition, which is fifty Dollars a year for each one. We shall be glad of any amount however small toward the expense. Our endowment is not yet sufficient to enable us to pay the expenses without asking for help. The enclosed printed slip will give you some definite idea as to our condition and needs. Yours Truly signed (in the hand of) Booker T. Washington." Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) was born into slavery in Virginia. He attended the Hampton Institute in his twenties. Baughman, H. T.
1906. Very Good. Twenty-seven stereoviews depicting scenes along the Oregon-California border. Grey mounts with photographer's imprint on front reading "H. T. Baughman - Western Oregon Scenery." Most stereoviews are labeled in ink or pencil on mount, underneath image or on verso. Photographs taken around 1906-7. Overall very good. Stereoviews have light silvering, contrast is good to very good; mounts have light wear to all edges, light soiling and some of the annotations are slightly rubbed. Photographs of note include California mining scenes such as "Joe Bar, 1906," "Tunnel No. 1 Blue Ledge," and "Blue Lead." The Blue Ledge Mine is located in northern California, just a few miles south of the Oregon border (now located in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest) and was initially discovered by miners in 1898. It was located near the small mining community of Joe Bar which is pictured in one stereoview as a group of tents, a wagon and two small businesses, a "Meat Market" and an "Assayer and Chemist." The copper mine was active from the time of discovery until 1930 with periods of inactivity in between. Also depicted are mountain and river scenes such as "Summit of the Siskiyou's June 1907," "Big Applegate river with the Red Buttes in the distance," "Elliot Creek, Siskiyou Co. , Cal." and a few images of "Roy Dam." Other images depict wildflowers, locomotives, and the state capitol building in Salem, Oregon. A valuable record of the mining region in Northern California and Southern Oregon. There was little information found on the photographer, H. T. … [Click Below for Full Description]

The novel is set in the Yukon Territory in Canada during the Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890s.
