RACKHAM, Arthur; BARRIE, J.M.
Hodder & Stoughton, 1906. First edition. Edition de Luxe, number 223 of 500 copies signed by Arthur Rackham. Large 4to. Full white vellum with gilt lettering and decoration. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed. A fine bright copy, lacks ties. Endpaper with map of Kensington Gardens and fifty colour plates mounted onto brown art paper and protected by captioned tissue guards. The plates for this version of Barrie's tale are magnificent. In 1902 J.M. Barrie wrote the novel "the Little White Bird", the central chapters of which tell of a child named Peter Pan, ".who escaped from being a human when he was seven days old . and flew back to Kensington Gardens." This part of the story was then developed by Barrie and the first book to appear with the title of Peter Pan was this 1906 version to which Arthur Rackham provided 50 magnificent colour illustrations. A contemporary review of this book published in "The World" reads "Mr Barrie has done what no one else has done since the inventor of "Alice", he has invented a new legend, a modern folk story which comprehends all the innermost secrets of the modern child, be he four or forty. Mr Rackham, for his part, has been bewitched in his cradle: he does not dream of fairies or hobgoblins, he knows them." [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Horn, Kamillo, Komponist und Musiker (1860-1941).
Wien, 15. X. 1906. 2 SS. 8vo.

AIREY, Frederick Wilkin Iago.
Shanghai etc., Kelly & Walsh, 1906. Small 8vo. Original illustrated yellow cloth, pp. 94, [2]; highly illustrated by the author throughout; very light dulling to binding, a very good copy. First edition, increasingly rare. A beautifully produced, politically very incorrect book, caricaturing the Chinese and their use of English. The volume opens with a glossary of Pidgin English terms, explaining the hybrid language to follin devils, i.e. foreign devils. The rhyming text, with good illustrations, exemplifies daily life of the Chinese communities employed by or dealing with Westerners.

Magnay, William
Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1906. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Very good. 8vo. vi, 319, [1] pp. + 4 pp. advertisements. With a frontispiece + 1 plate by John Cameron. Bound in original green publisher's cloth designed by the Decorative Designers firm (signed with their interlocking "DD" monogram, the second D facing left); title lettered in red-orange on front cover and spine, large spider web pierced by a green sword with elaborate gilt handle. Early gift inscription on first blank dated 1914. Curious English mystery novel distinguished by the excellent American publisher's binding depicting a "spider-web" motif rendered by the esteemed Decorative Designers firm (active 1895-1931). The firm was unique in that it employed a number of designers, and each was responsible for certain aspects of a design -- an early example of division of labor in creative work. The founder of the firm was Henry Thayer (1867-1940) who was trained as an architect (following the example of Stanford White, architect and book cover designer). Thayer was responsible for much of the lettering produced by the firm, and Emma Redington Lee Thayer (1874-1973), another important woman designer, executed the beautiful decorative borders and designs. Henry Thayer and Emma Redington Lee Thayer were married in 1909 but later divorced in 1932 on the grounds of desertion. Charles Buckles Falls (d. 1960) and Jay Chambers (d. 1929) were in charge of drawing the figures featured in narrative designs. Their designs were often initially sketched by hand, then transferred to brass plates and engraved by Rome K. Ric … [Click Below for Full Description]
