(CHANNEL ISLANDS) CHEVALIER, Jean.
Jersey: Labey et Blampied. (Société Jersiaise.) 1906-[1914] 9 parts, complete. Untrimmed in orig. green-blue printed wrappers; occasional dusting, but overall v.g.One of 300 copies printed, scarce in commerce. Jean Chevalier, 1589-1675, nobleman and diarist, known as the 'Pepys of Jersey'. Chevalier writes very little about himself, instead providing fascinating insight into the political and social upheaval in Jersey during his lifetime. Of great interest are the tumultuous years 1642-1651, when England, Ireland and Scotland were embroiled in bloody civil war. The sympathies of the Jersiaise for the most part lay with Parliament, although some prominent members of Jersey society sided with the Crown, and the highly influential de Carteret family held the island for the King. The diary, here published in nine parts, shows Chevalier's descriptive powers, although it is sometimes difficult to read as it is written in Island patois. With perseverance, it provides a fascinating window into Jersey life during that engaging period.

VILLIERS de L'ISLE ADAM.
Paris. Conard. Sinclair would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Gottesman p.15. Parker and Kermode p. 28. "Upton Sinclair's The Jungle" crf-usa online. Donnadieux, A. -L. / Fabre, Charles
Paris: Gauthier-Villars 1892, 1906. 2 titles in one volume. VIII, 248, [V]-VII, [1] pages + 20 plates + [249]-251 pages. Second title [1]-207 pages. Half calf over marbled boards. Large 8vo. 6 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches. Light browning to pages. Boards. The first title, "Traite de photographie stereoscopique. Theorie et pratique," was originally issued with the 20 plates in a separate cloth-backed portfolio. Here the plates have been bound in.Both titles are scarce, with Fabre's work not present in the Epstean collection as of this writing. Both titles deal with the theory and practice of stereoscopy. This artform / photographic technique allows the photographer to take a photograph which can be viewed later in three dimensions. It is accomplished by taking the same image with 2 lenses slightly separated from one another, which when viewed through a stereoscope with similarly separated lenses allows the viewer to see depth in the image. A fascinating parlor trick since the 1850s and still something that wows the public who often hasn't seen it. Both titles are scarce, with fewer than a dozen examples in book form in library systems participating in Worldcat/OCLC. Near Fine.

KIPLING, [Joseph] Rudyard (1865-1936), [MILLAR, H.R., illustrator].
London: MacMillan and Co., 1906.. Fantasy tales. FIRST EDITION. Octavo (21 x 14cm), pp.306; 10 (ads, dated 20.9.06). With 20 black and white illustrations by H.R. Millar. Elegantly hand-bound in red half oasis morocco over original cloth sides gilt with elephant medalion to upper, top edge gilt, spine gilt-lettered in six compartments with raised bands. A clean copy, inside and out. Kipling's popular series of tales set in different historical eras, including Roman Britain, Anglo-Saxon England, The Norman Conquest, The Middle Ages and the Tudor Period. The stories are all told to two children living near Pevensey, East Sussex, by characters magically plucked out of history by 'Puck'. Traditionally the term 'Puck' referred to a malicious spirit or demon of popular superstition, and from the 16th century the name of a mischevious goblin (or Hobgoblin), similar to that appearing in Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', the fairy scene from which is acted out here. Although 'Puck' is seen as a children's book, (in the same way 'Treasure Island' or 'King Solomon's Mines' are viewed), the story-tellers are adults and the romances they describe would only be suitable for older readers.
