Einstein, Albert
[Leipzig: Annalen der Physik, 1906]. In: Annalen der Physik 19, pp 289-306 and pp 371-381. 1 vols. 8vo. Two papers from Einstein's annus mirabilis, one of them signed. Signed "A. Einstein (50)" at the head of the first contribution. Two of five papers written during Einstein's annus mirabilis of 1905 which provided answers to several major scientific questions and lay the groundwork for modern physics. Famously, the papers were written while Einstein was working as an examiner in the patent office in Bern, Switzerland. His first contribution in the present volume, A New Determination of Molecular Dimensions, was submitted by Einstein as his doctoral dissertation. The second, On the Theory of Brownian Motion, solved an important question of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. This copy was signed by Einstein for Lewis L. Strauss (1896-1974), an important figure in the development of atomic energy. Strauss was one of the first commissioners of the Atomic Energy Commission, and served as its chair from 1953-1958. He also established the endowment for the Albert Einstein Award, whose recipients included Kurt Gödel, Julian Schwinger, Richard Feynman, Leó Szilárd, and Stephen Hawking. Schilpp 11 & 12. Later drab brown wrappers. Very good.

John Hay, Secretary Of State] McIlvaine, Charles; Leiser, Joseph; Straus, Oscar S; Root, Elihu; White, Andrew Dickson; Krauskopf, Joseph
Philadelphia, 1906. 1st edition. Original paper wrappers. 8vo. 25 pages, 23 cm. In English. Speeches and ceremony celebrating a stained glass window in commemoration of former Secretary of State John Hay. John Milton Hay (1838–1905) was a U. S. Statesman who supported Romanian and Russian Jewish rights. Hay was a secretary of state under presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt from 1898 until his death in 1905. He was involved in U. S. Diplomatic representations during this period on behalf of Romanian and Russian Jews. In 1902, at the urging of American Jewish leaders including Oscar S. Straus and Jacob H. Schiff, Hay addressed a note to the signatories of the Berlin Treaty of 1878 protesting Romania's violation of that treaty by its restrictions on Jews. Following the Kishinev pogrom of 1903, again after Jewish pressure and with an eye to domestic political considerations, Hay publicized a protest petition drawn up by B'nai B'rith. Oscar Straus, one of the speakers, was appointed to the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Hague under President Theodore Roosevelt. He would be reappointed by President Roosevelt in 1908, President Taft in 1912, and President Wilson in 1920. Straus made history in 1906 when he became the first Jewish cabinet member after being appointed by Roosevelt as Secretary of Commerce and Labor. He also participated at the Paris Peace Conference, advising President Wilson on the interests of European Jewry. Elihu Root, another of the speakers, served as the Secretary of State under President Theodore Roosevelt and as Secretary of War under … [Click Below for Full Description]

This portrait was chosen to parody the practice of, as Burgess's publisher B. W. Huebsch described it, having "the picture of a damsel - languishing, heroic, or coquettish - anyhow, a damsel on the jacket of every novel" (Dwyer). Burgess was a San Francisco humorist who co-founded the comic magazine The Lark in 1895, the first issue of which featured his famous nonsense poem "The Purple Cow".
[Click Below for Full Description]

Salvini Tommaso (1829-1915).
John Wisden
Hi, Here we have a 1906 Original Hardback Wisden, in Good+ Condition. With an interesting anomali. The gilt has a slight fade to front board and the spine, the boards are very clean, small knock to one corner. Nice hinges, slight weakness if being picky. Clean pages inside and nice photoplate. Pin prick mark to the spine cloth as shown. There is one oddity which I have shown in the video below as it is quite unusual, the book was printed incorrectly on page xxix. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

John W. Luce & Company Boston 1906 First Edition 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Hardcover 210, 2 [ads] pages. Numerous attractive black and white illustrations in text. "Bachelors are the most charming of entertainers. What woman ever refuses an opportunity to chaperon at a bachelor dinner or studio tea? What debutante does not feel secretly ecstatic at the very idea of looking behind the scenes and peeping into the corners of some famous bachelor menage?" - page 2. "There is no complete compendium for the ambitious bachelor, but his proverbial fare of 'bread and cheese and kisses' needs to be modified to suit present-day needs, and the judicious addition of a few crumbs to his store of provender may be welcome. From these crumbs from many bachelor cupboards, then, may he find an occasional 'crumb of comfort' and a little lift over some hard place along the road. If he finds it herein, the purpose of this book will have been fulfilled." - pages 7-8. The quiet Main Street housed a few stables and little else in 1905, but a year later, with the contest invigorating the town, the same street boasted saloons, music halls, and shops. 4. NEWSPAPER reporters flooded to venue to cover the bout, and more than 8,000 fans paid over $90,000 to watch the fight. That gate was the richest in history, and the crowd included US President Teddy Roosevelt's son, Kermit. 5. GANS worked exceptionally hard to make weight for the contest. In fact, too hard.
