Stieglitz, Alfred
Rochester, NY: Eastman Kodak Co. Condition: A near fine copy in wrappers. [14 leaves]; letterpress, offset lithography, and 10 mounted original photographs (including a vignette on the cover). Among the original photographs are prints by Eduard Steichen (Lady and Child, which won first prize in the contest; probably printed from a copy negative); Alfred Stieglitz (Soap Bubbles; believed to have been printed from the original negative); and Harold Baker (The Fairy Tale, 're-developed', according to the caption). Kodak announced a large photography contest for 1905, looking to spur popular adoption of photography. The winning entries were shown in New York and other locations as part of a touring exhibit. The winning images mostly show the influence of the Photo-Secession movement. In addition to reproducing some of the winning entries, Kodak used this publication to showcase various types of photographic paper and processes. The papers used for the original tipped-in prints are Velvet Velox, Portrait Velox, Sepia Paper, Carbon Velox, W-D Platinum, and Mezzo-Tone. The Souvenir was apparently produced in small numbers, perhaps for the New York exhibit at Madison Square Garden Concert Hall in November 1906. In any case, it's rather uncommon now, with just four holdings in OCLC (nos. 4017664 and 195139087). The only sale at auction in recent years was Swann Galleries' 2013 sale no. 2335, lot 20, $5250. Condition: Overall very good. The book is soundly bound. Outer covers are worn and there is the remains of an old label on the front. Some of the images also have the remains of text labels towards the top of the pages, and sometimes holes in the page where the label has been removed, and there are some old damp stains and worm holes - please view the images which are representative of overall condition. For those familiar with old Burmese books, you will appreciate that such wear is to be expected as the Burmese climate is far from ideal when it comes to book preservation.A truly remarkable and unique find, which will be a great addition to someone's collection. The Thirty Seven Nats, Unique Book of original Burmese Paintings. This exciting find is a unique Burmese artwork depicting the Thirty Seven Nats. It consists of a concertina style bound document, made from a thick hand-made textured paper and is resplendent with 2 sets of hand drawn illustrations of the Thirty Seven Nats - 74 full colour images in total. The book expands to a length of approximately 7 metres long when fully unfurled. We believe one side depicts the Nats in their Outdoors form and the other as they would be represented Indoors - akin to statues. Nats originate from the pre-Buddhist animist beliefs of Burmese people. They are a group of supernatural beings, or nature spirits, of which there is special group of 37 'royal' Nats, the royal pantheon. Nat worship still occurs in Burmese society alongside Buddhism which is the prevalent religion. It is much more common in rural areas. Sir Richard Carnac Te … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Cassell and Company, 1906. Complete in twenty volumes, this edition was part of a limited printing of 1550 copies, of which this is number 176. Published by Casell and Company in association with several of Stevenson's previous publishers, including Chatto and Windus, Heinemann and Longmans Green, this collection of his works varies from his most popular (Treasure Island, Kidnapped, In The South Seas, The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde etc) to more obscure, such as Notes and Essays Chiefly of The Road, Letters from Samoa and Familiar Studies of Men and Books. As such, the collection sees Stevenson's fiction and non-fiction, writing of his own opinions and experiences as much as creating these for his characters. The collection was published at a time before Stevenson's work would be disparaged in favour of Modernist Literature, which would make a departure from the escapism that prevailed in the popular work of the Nineteenth Century. This dismissal of Stevenson's work failed to take into account the author's literary and social criticism, as well as his humanist and anti-imperialist viewpoints (this latter aspect seen here particularly in The Ebb-Tide), which would perhaps have seen him viewed in more favour. The result was relatively far-reaching in that he would be deemed unworthy of mention in the definitive Norton Anthology of English Literature until 2006; a century after this collection was published. A bibliography and introduction is here provided by Edmund Gosse, a prominent literary critic of his time and a aquaintance and contemporary of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

POTTER, Beatrix (1866-1943).
London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1906. [Childrens' classic] FIRST EDITION. INSCRIBED PRESENTATION COPY. Sextodecimo (14 x 11cm). Illustrated with frontispiece and twenty-six coloured plates. Publisher's grey-green paper-covered boards with colour illustration laid-down to upper. With a SIGNED note from the author to flyleaf: "For Mrs. Beck | with kind regards | from Beatrix Potter | October 1906". Some marks within, some handling evident, binding with a little soiling, sympathetically restored at joints. Shows well. A remarkable and close-association copy. The recipient is Mrs Alcock-Beck, who was both a long-time friend and professional colleague of the author. The socially-aware Beatrix Potter and Mrs Beck had both championed the post of district nurse, a position lacking in their Lake District locale where, as seasoned residents in an isolated rural community, they were acutely aware of the increased risk of death of women during childbirth and the greater susceptibility to illness of the elderly among the remote fell farms. The district nurse system was organised around parish jurisdictions and in sparsley-populated regions like this, several parishes joined together to form one district committee; Hawkshead, Wray, Graythwaite and Sawrey each supplied two representatives; the two elected officers from Sawrey being Beatrix Potter and her friend Mrs Alcock-Beck. We note a 1922 title [Cecily Parsley] inscribed to Mrs Beck 'with love', highlighting their relationship's closeness over time.

A -L Donnadieux
Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1906. Condition: Near Fine. 2 titles in one volume. VIII, 248, [V]-VII, [1] pages + 20 plates + [249]-251 pages. Second title [1]-207 pages. Half calf over marbled boards. Large 8vo. 6 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches. Light browning to pages. Boards. The first title, "Traite de photographie stereoscopique. Theorie et pratique," was originally issued with the 20 plates in a separate cloth-backed portfolio. Here the plates have been bound in. Both titles are scarce, with Fabre's work not present in the Epstean collection as of this writing. Both titles deal with the theory and practice of stereoscopy. This artform / photographic technique allows the photographer to take a photograph which can be viewed later in three dimensions. It is accomplished by taking the same image with 2 lenses slightly separated from one another, which when viewed through a stereoscope with similarly separated lenses allows the viewer to see depth in the image. A fascinating parlor trick since the 1850s and still something that wows the public who often hasn't seen it. Both titles are scarce, with fewer than a dozen examples in book form in library systems participating in Worldcat/OCLC.

Edward J. Paxson; "Edward Jay"; [Edward John Paxson (1854-1920)]
[Philadelphia, 1906-1918]. Approx. [180]pp., handwritten. Illustrated Manuscript. Small Folio. 13¼ x 11 inches. Quarter red sheep and black cloth boards. Partially foliated. Decorative, italic hand lettering; hand drawn, numerous decorated initials; illustrated headpieces; other illustrations. Ownership inscription of "Edward J. Paxton, 2444 Master St." to endpaper. Laid in: 1¼ pages of modern biographical notes on Paxson; 3 leaves of printed proofs for an illustrated poem; one 8½ x 13 inches pen and ink bird's-eye view drawing; one decorated headpiece; one ms. sheet music bifolium; etc. Two printed plate leaves and another printed plate from contemporary sources tipped in. Boards worn and detached; spine perished; textblock generally sound; some leaves loose. Internally, clean and very good. Dramatically decorated and highly illustrated handwritten album of poetry and some prose by Philadelphian Edward J. Paxson. Using the pseudonym "Edward Jay," Paxson writes of himself throughout in the third person, noting he is the "Author of 'Wake! Man, Wake!!'," the poem which opens his calligraphic manuscript. Paxson's numerous vignette illustrations and fanciful, "illuminated" initials joined with his neat calligraphy text form a total work of art, ready for publication. For example, the title vignette for the poem "Eventide" shows a barn-like building along a river attended by weeping willows and a setting sun. Each verse and the chorus has a decorated initial and the title is presented in large serifed type enhanced by decorations suggesting the shimmer of sundown. The comic-poem … [Click Below for Full Description]

New York, Oxford University Press: The condition is incredible on this 112 year old set. All spines are intact. Of the thousands of pages I have only seen issues with two pages (less than one inch tear), except for the one volume that has three nail holes in it. Paris, Photo-Club de Paris, 1906. in-4. 2ff. II. 146pp. 1f. 42 planches hors-texte. [Click Below for Full Description]

Gleason, plus an additional 40 photographic plates which serve as frontispieces to this leather-bound issue (not in the cloth-bound copies), 20 of which are hand-colored; publisher's uncommon three-quarter red morocco, gilt-decorated spines, t.e.g.; fine, bright set with no fading. The red morocco binding is uncommon; sets in leather usually appear in green or brown morocco; the usual binding is green buckram with printed labels on the spines. The celebrated Manuscript Edition of Thoreau's writings, with the five principal works, other essays, miscellaneous pieces, poems, one volume of letters (edited by F. B. Sanborn), and 15 volumes of Thoreau's Journal (edited by Bradford Torrey). The manuscript leaf in this volume, approximately 175 words, is from Excursions, A Yankee in Canada, chapter four, "The Walls of Quebec" (pages 69-70, this edition), which Emerson edited for publication in 1863. This leaf contains about a half dozen interlinear editorial corrections in pencil which possibly may be in Emerson's hand. Thoreau writes: [The comparative wealth of the Church in this country was] "apparent; for in this village we did not see one good house besides. Henry David Thoreau
Boston: Houghton, Mifflin & Co, 1906. Manuscript Edition, limited to 600 sets (this is no. 387), signed by the publishers, containing a leaf of Thoreau's manuscript, written in ink on both sides; the entire text concerns apples, portions of which appeared in his essay, "Wild Apples." 20 volumes, 8vo, portraits and numerous plates throughout after photographs by Herbert Gleason. In original green buckram, paper labels on spines; lacking the rare printed dust-jackets, with the buckram cracked along 2 or 3 joints, some chipping at the tops of 5 or 6 spines, 1 label slightly abraded, a few leaves in volume 11 carelessly opened, spines uniformly sunned, occasional light pencil annotation in the Journals; but on the whole, the set looks pretty presentable as it sits on the shelf, and the leaf of manuscript is generally fine. Allen, p. 52; BAL 20145; Borst B3. BAL notes that vols. I-V are reprints, but vols. VI-XX contain material not published before, and represent the first complete edition of the Journals.
