DUSE (Eleonora, 1858-1924, Italian Actress)
Fine Signed Portrait Photograph, showing her seated head and shoulders, in profile to the viewer's right, wearing a light muslin shawl over an off-the-shoulder dress, relaxed but thoughtful, signed and inscribed on the mount in Italian to Mathilde LINDPAINTNER (1851-1942, née Martins de Almeida, wife, 1879, of the Bavarian Oberstleutnant Ludwig Lindpaintner, 1849-1896), "with remembrances and good wishes", in a circular print 6 inches diameter on card mount 19" x 13¾", Florence, 7th September small round blot in blank upper portion of mount Eleonora Duse appears to have chosen this photograph, not to display any drama, but as an expression of herself in repose - in contrast to her acting, in which she aimed to let the character, and only the character, display emotion.Mathilde Lindpaintner was half Portuguese, half Bavarian - her mother's father was Prince Karl, second son of King Maximilian I of Bavaria.

A collection of letters that gives a fortunate insight into the life of 16-year-old Alexei Kruchyonykh. Very little is known about Kruchyonykh's life prior to his graduation from Odessa Art School in 1906. Probably the first fact of the poet's biography that is being mentioned is the acquaintance with Burliuk brothers in Odessa in 1905. The first poem by Kruchyonykh was published in 1910. That's why these six letters from 1902 are important for understanding the making of Kruchyonykh that we know. Alexei was born in Kherson area of Ukraine, in Olevka village, in the family of a peasant. In 1892 the family moved to Kherson, the port town on Dnieper river and the Black Sea. That's where he has attended the primary school and in 1902 has passed the exam to Odessa Art School, and moved there. He was accepted already to the second year and eventually has graduated in 1906 as an art teacher. The school year has started in August, and the first letter is dated 8th of October, 1902 and the last one is dated 12th of December, 1902, which allows us to create the picture of a poet through this 2-months period. All but two letters are addressed to Alexander Litvinovsky, the schoolmate of Kruchyonykh in Kherson. After primary school, he became a sailor and by 1902 already was working on the ship that sailed the Black Sea. However, in the autumn of 1902, he remained in Kherson, where he was receiving the letters from Kruchyonykh. He was living with his father in the Kherson area Zabalka (literally meaning 'over the arroyo'), that was regarded as one of the poorer areas of the city, locat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hobbs, John Oliver (Pseudonym of Pearl Mary Teresa Craigie) - John Hobbes - The Dream and the Business - 1906 UK first edition published by T. Fisher Unwin. Not an uncommon first edition, but very uncommon In the dust jacket, which utilises the same Aubrey Beardsley artwork(originally purchased by Unwin for an earlier poster) as the book and also features advertising for other Unwin titles to both the rear panel and flap. Despite the mention of a business in the title, and the woman in the illustration gazing longingly across a street at a bookshop, this is sadly not a story about a woman who dreams of owning and running a bookshop, it seems from a quick skim to be a novel revolving around love, marriage and human relations, though I may have missed the crucial sections that mention the bookshop. The book is firmly bound in the publisher's cream and blue cloth, lettered and illustrated in red, black, yellow, pink and green, the extremities are bumped and rubbed. The text block is toned and slightly foxed. The dust jacket is the original, it is toned and grubby with areas of loss, rubbing and creasing, there are also splits at the folds and closed tears, however it has been professionally conserved with the judicious application of tissue to the reverse. L N TOLSTOY
Moskva: Condition: Wrappers rather faded and toned along extremities, general wear from handling, small dampstain to upper cover, else About Very Good overall. Slim octavo (20cm.); original green photo-illustrated wrappers; 85pp. Contemporary ownership signature to upper cover. Autobiographical essay on the author's spiritual evolution penned shortly after Tolstoy turned to Christian anarchism in his late-middle age. Inspired by his reading of Schopenhauer's "The World as Will and Representation," the author describes emerging from a midlife crisis and a break from his literary past. Tolstoy was raised in the Greek Orthodox Church, though by his teenage years was no longer practicing his childhood faith. Instead, the author writes early on in this essay, "I endeavoured to reach perfection in intellectual attainments" (as quoted from Thomas Sharper Knowlson's Leo Tolstoy: A Biographical and Critical Study (1904), p. 42). By late middle age the prospect of reaching literary and intellectual perfection no longer appealed to Tolstoy, who instead turned towards spiritual introspection. As he describes it, his melancholia immediately lessened when he said "God is life," though the author would not write of his Christian beliefs until the publication of What I Believe (also known as My Religion) in 1884. The influence of Tolstoy's religious works have been far-reaching, especially in their bid for nonviolent resistance, the most notable reader and practitioner arguably being Mahatma Gandhi, who wrote to Tolstoy after reading his Letter to a Hindu (1908). The present work would eve … [Click Below for Full Description]

First serialized in Outing magazine, it was published in 1906. The story takes place in Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories, Canada, during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush and details White Fang's journey to domestication. POTTER A good, clean first edition first printing of The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit, the first of two panoramic format titles by Beatrix Potter, aimed at younger children and issued for Christmas. Beatrix Potter had planned three books in this format, the second being The Story of Miss Moppet (1906) with The Sly Old Cat to follow last, but after The Story of Miss Moppet it was decided to drop this form, "the shops sensibly refused to stock them because they got unrolled and so bad to fold up again" (Linder, p. 183). The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit and The Story of Miss Moppet were subsequently reissued in the more standard format for Potter's books in 1916, but The Sly Old Cat was not published until 1971, almost thirty years after her death.
