Washington, D. C: Scurlock Studio, 1906. Silver chloride boudoir portrait photograph. Image size is approximately 4" x 5.5" mounted on 6.75" x 10.5" thick cardstock. He began his photographic apprenticeship with Rice Studio in Washington, DC in 1900. By 1904 he was executing commission portraits on his own at the house of his parents on S street. His studio address on this Dunbar photograph is T Street, which places the date sometime between 1906-1907 (Dunbar died in 1908). Scurlock's studio grew to become 'the' place for African-Americans to sit for portraits, and the business carried on for over 90 years, until the deaths of his sons. Among other things, the firm taught the art of photography, most notably to a young Jacqueline Bouvier, who would become the "Inquiring Camera Girl" for the *Washington Times-Herald* before marrying John F. Kennedy. The archive of the firm is now regarded as an invaluable resource for the history of the African-American community in Washington DC. [POLAND - POLITICAL PRISONERS].
Warsaw, Centralny Komitet Robotniczy Polskiej Partij Socjalisticznnej, 24 April 1906. Illegally printed broadside. 4to, nine lines of text; evenly a little browned, short marginal tear; otherwise fine. This Announcement, published by Polish revolutionaries, tells us that they freed tonight ten political prisoners, who had been sentenced to death, held by the Tsarist army in the infamous Pawiak prison in Warsaw (built from 1829 to 1835), concluding the the triumphant note 'they shall live in freedom'. The daring and life-saving deed had been carried out with stolen uniforms, and forged typewritten documents demanding the prisoners to be handed over. This event was celebrated throughout the Polish underground; however, printed documents of that kind could mean deportation to Siberia for the holder and are of greatest rarity. This item was exhibited at Kontrol, an art event-cum-exhibition organized by Poland Street Underground in London, November, 2009.

O Wilde / A W Hiller
Dusseldorf: Schmitz & Olbertz, 1906. One of 600 copies of this German Edition of The Priest and the Acolyte, attributed to Oscar Wilde. Stuart Mason, in the Introductory Protest, as well as in his Bibliography of Oscar Wilde, makes is clear that though this scandalous story is oft-attributed to Wilde, it was in fact penned by John Francis Bloxam of Exeter College, Oxford and was reprinted from The Chameleon, Vol. I, No. 1, December 1894 [Mason, 655]. This copy rebound in a vellum binding, decorated with geometrical ornaments, both Symbolist and derivative of Viennese decoration. Signed by the Hungarian artist Kozma Lajos whose early work is similar to graphic works by German and Austrian artists of the period and a bit earlier. Lajos was to become better known as an architect and designer. Some light and scattered foxing. (Mason, 655).

Winston S. Churchill
London: Macmillan and Company, 1906. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This first edition presentation set of Lord Randolph Churchill, Winston Churchill's biography of his father, features a remarkable eight-line inscription to the man who guided Churchill's successful first campaign as a Liberal. In black ink in eight lines on the front free endpaper, Churchill wrote: “F. Burn | from | Winston S. Churchill | As a memento of the great | Free Trade victory won in | Manchester 13 Jan 1906, & | in recognition of his share | in that good work.” The set's virtue resides more in testifying to the associations and machinations of Churchill's early Parliamentary career than in condition. The volumes are good overall, unrestored and sound despite aesthetic flaws. Each volume is housed in a blue cloth chemise nested within a custom quarter leather slipcase. The bindings show toning and soiling. The contents show intermittent spotting throughout, endemic to the edition. The Volume I front hinge is mildly shaken, with the mull fully intact beneath a partial, cosmetic split to the endpapers. Burn signed the Volume II front free endpaper and further inked “Fred Burn | from the author” on the blank recto preceding the half title. The quarter leather slipcase spine is modestly worn and sunned. Fred Burn's (1860-1930) obituary remembered him as “one of the most successful… among the professional [Liberal] party workers in the North of England.” Indeed, “Mr. Burn's… political activity included the organization of the Liberal campaign against Mr. Winston Churchill when he wa … [Click Below for Full Description]

PEARD FAMILY. Photograph Album.
[c.1906-1935]. Folio album containing approximately 300 black and white photographs across 80 untrimmed leaves, 11 additional photographs loosely inserted; a few mounts lacking photographs. Bound in contemp. full Florentine vellum, lettered & dec. in gilt, white string ties; sl. dusted, vellum a little bowed. A fascinating photograph album, containing about 300 black and white images, mainly photographs taken by Helen Peard over the course of her extensive overseas travels. The earliest photographs in the album are dated 1906, and were taken in Cracow. The scenes are mainly topographical, but there are occasional images of local people, including one of a cart driver. The next group are photographs taken in Monte Carlo, dated 1908-09. These scenes of Monaco show an elderly man identified as G.S. Peard; this is George Shouldham Peard, b. 1829, older brother of the popular Victorian novelist Frances Mary Peard. This album was assembled by another relative Helen Peard, and most of the photographs appear to have been taken by her. The vast majority date from the 1930s, and show Helen to have taken at least one, but more likely several, highly adventurous world tours. Among the places visited are Hong Kong, India (Taj Mahal), Egypt (Valley of the Kings, Pyramids), Chile, Panama (Panama Canal), Jerusalem, Costa Rica, Canada, USA (Pasadena and Grand Canyon), Cape Town, Trinidad, Honolulu, the Falkland Islands, Magellan Straits, Juan Fernadez (Robinson Crusoe Island), St. Helena (Longwood), Morocco, Samoa, and Papua New Guinea ('Cannibal Native, Port Moseby, New Guinea, 1933'). The American Institute of Electrical Engineers, New York, N.Y. First Edition. viii, 952 pages. 8vo. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt spine titles. Minor wear to the extremities of the binding, recently recased with new endpapers. Offered is the entire year of the Transactions of the AIEE, Vol XXV, Jan to Dec 1906, with a volume title page dated 1907 (as normal). The article by De Forest was presented at the 210th Meeting of the AIEE in NY, October 26th, 1906 and is found on page 735. This format of the Transactions includes not only the paper read by De Forest, but the extensive discussion which followed, and also some discussion that occurred in November of the same year at the Philadelphia meeting. Cloth. Edison's invention of the light bulb and the realization of vacuum tubes enabled a revolution in electronics, particularly in the field of wireless communication. Pioneering work was done by John Fleming and others on vacuum tubes, but it was the invention of the Audion by De Forest (which demonstrated the tube's ability to amplify signals) that revolutionized wireless transmission. Shiers (History of Telecommunications Technology) calls this paper the "Pioneering paper on the three-element tube." (Shiers 11-016). This paper was quite early in the development of the device - He had applied for a patent on a three element vacuum tube (not the grid version) on October 25, 1906, one day before his presentation to the AIEE. The first public disclosure of the grid type audion wasn't made until March 14, 1907. Davis in his Electrical and Electronic Technologies notes that De F … [Click Below for Full Description]
