CHIKANOBU Toyohara ;
[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Jesse COE
N.P. Condition: Thin strip of paper reinforcement along top edge verso, a few faint folds and small tears; brief penciled notation to left of portrait; Very Good, clean example, without loss. Original lithographed wanted poster, with text and photographic portrait printed in black on recto only; measures 10.75" x 7". A reward bulletin issued by the Indianapolis, IN Chief of Police, Robert Metzger, for gunman Jesse Coe (alias Cole). About 8pm on the night of September 30, 1906, Coe shot officer Charles J. Russell at close range in a neighborhood near 24th Street and Indianapolis Avenue; he was later taken to an Indianapolis hospital, where he died of his wound. Russell's partner, Edward J. Petticord, chased after the alleged gunman (Coe), and was shot in the back by another suspect. Petticord died two days later, and the man accused of killing Petticord was arrested, convicted, and hanged at the Indiana State Prison in February, 1907. Law enforcement officials launched a nationwide manhunt for Coe, who was believed to have left Indianapolis by train, disguised as a laborer. Two years after the shooting, Coe's cousin led authorities to him while he was squirrel hunting in Kentucky; when approached by authorities, Coe was shot dead after pointing his rifle at them. The broadside is rare, with no example held by any OCLC member institution. A presumably later example is held by Kent State, offering a higher reward of $1500 for Coe. Of particular interest on the present example is the penciled notation to the left of Coe's portrait, stating "Capd. Shot - 11/13/06," clearly givin … [Click Below for Full Description]

POTTER, Beatrix.
London & New York: Frederick Warne and Co., 1906. London & New York: Frederick Warne and Co.,, 1906. Oblong duodecimo. Panorama mounted on pale green linen back, arranged in pairs with text on recto and illustration on facing verso, and folded concertina-style into the original blue cloth wallet-style case, with closing tab heightened with silver. Front cover lettered in dark blue and with a pictorial label. With 14 colour illustrations by the author. Occasional creasing, slot-flap missing, some rubbing to extremities. A very good copy of this fragile work. First edition, first issue with "London & New York" printed on the back. At the start of 1906, Potter planned three books in a panoramic form, with 14 pictures and 14 pages of text: The Story of Miss Moppet, The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit, and The Sly Old Cat, but only the first two were published. Issued for the 1906 Christmas market, the books were too easily damaged, so "the shops sensibly refused to stock them because they got unrolled and so bad to fold up again" Potter wrote (Linder, p. 183). The panoramic design was dropped and the books brought into line with the rest of the series in 1916.

[Booker T. Washington]
Tuskegee, Alabama: Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, 1906. Letter. Approx. 8" x 10" letter handwritten on Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute letterhead. The letter written by one of Washington's student (as was commonly done) is signed by Booker T. Washington at the bottom. A few small brown stains on the letter. A previous owner of this letter typed a short note, cut it down to size and pasted at the bottom of the letter directly below the signature. The note reads "You will notice that this letter was written by Dr. Booker T. Washington, famous Negro Educator and founder of Tuskegee Institute in 1906 before the Institute had typewriters and letters were writte(n) by students and signed by Dr. Washington." This particular letter is a request for a donation to help cover the expenses of students tuition -"I am writing you because I thought you would be interested in helping us to meet the tuition expenses of our students. The students pay their own board partly in cash and partly in labor but are unable to pay the tuition in addition, which is fifty Dollars a year for each one. We shall be glad of any amount however small toward the expense. Our endowment is not yet sufficient to enable us to pay the expenses without asking for help. The enclosed printed slip will give you some definite idea as to our condition and needs. Yours Truly signed (in the hand of) Booker T. Washington." Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) was born into slavery in Virginia. He attended the Hampton Institute in his twenties. Commandant at the Navy Yard on Mare Island (MINSY) in California, acknowledging receipt of his "telegram and letter ... Many thanks. The Gja's draft is 8 feet and beam 20 feet. I notice what you say about the vessel settling on the bottom, it will not hurt her, and I am sure that you will select the best possible place for her. Mr Frank Smith will deliver the vessel after further conference with you ...", 1 side 8vo., Oakland, 26th October The Mare Island Naval Shipyard was the first United States Navy base established on the Pacific Ocean. It is located 25 miles northeast of San Francisco in Vallejo, California. It was a base for Arctic rescue missions. Gja was the first vessel to travel through the Northwest Passage. With a crew of six, Roald Amundsen got through the passage in a three-year journey, finishing in 1906. They had arrived in Nome, Alaska on 31st August at the end of their successful voyage and the Gja was to be docked at the Naval Dockyard. She sailed on to earthquake ravaged San Francisco, where the expedition was met with a hero's welcome on October 19th. Rather than sail her round Cape Horn and back to Norway, Amundsen sold the ship to the city of San Francisco and it was dragged up the beach to the Northwest corner of Golden Gate Park and put on display. He returned to Norway by commercial ship. Amundsen is recognised as the first person to reach both poles. He was lost in 1928 while taking part in a rescue mission for the airship Italia, when his plane disappeared. Gja was damaged by souvenir seekers and became derelict. In 1940 a shame … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johann Goethe
Hammersmith: 1906. Condition: Near fine. One of 300 copies, octavo size, 261 pp., in German. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a German statesman and a prolific writer whose work includes novels, poetry, dramas, and literary criticism; he was an early participant of the Sturm und Drang literary movement and rose to fame early in life with the publication of "The Sorrows of Young Werther". His best-known drama, "Faust", is the story of a man who makes a deal with Mephistopheles in order to achieve whatever he wants; "Faust" was massively influential and the idea of "making a deal with the devil" has been repeated numerous times in subsequent literature, plays, and films. The story of Faust reveals the depths and desperations of human nature in the earthly gamble for fame and fortune. This publication by The Doves Press is Part One of "Faust", the second part being printed in 1910; the German text from the 1887 Weimar edition of the play is printed, bound in beautiful limp vellum by the Doves Bindery. The Doves Press, founded by T. J. Cobden-Sanderson, was entirely self-sufficient, designing, printing, and binding its own books, and even cutting its own typeface for use in its publications; the books it published were often chosen for their typographical challenges, and were designed and printed with a simple elegance that did justice to the works' literary merits and the Press's skill and innovation. DESCRIPTION: Full limp vellum, gilt lettering on the spine, fore- and bottom edges rough cut, characters and stage directions printed in red, with titles, acts, and sce … [Click Below for Full Description]

Moskva: Condition: Wrappers rather faded and toned along extremities, general wear from handling, small dampstain to upper cover, else About Very Good overall. Slim octavo (20cm.); original green photo-illustrated wrappers; 85pp. Contemporary ownership signature to upper cover. Autobiographical essay on the author's spiritual evolution penned shortly after Tolstoy turned to Christian anarchism in his late-middle age. Inspired by his reading of Schopenhauer's "The World as Will and Representation," the author describes emerging from a midlife crisis and a break from his literary past. Tolstoy was raised in the Greek Orthodox Church, though by his teenage years was no longer practicing his childhood faith. Instead, the author writes early on in this essay, "I endeavoured to reach perfection in intellectual attainments" (as quoted from Thomas Sharper Knowlson's Leo Tolstoy: A Biographical and Critical Study (1904), p. 42). By late middle age the prospect of reaching literary and intellectual perfection no longer appealed to Tolstoy, who instead turned towards spiritual introspection. As he describes it, his melancholia immediately lessened when he said "God is life," though the author would not write of his Christian beliefs until the publication of What I Believe (also known as My Religion) in 1884. The influence of Tolstoy's religious works have been far-reaching, especially in their bid for nonviolent resistance, the most notable reader and practitioner arguably being Mahatma Gandhi, who wrote to Tolstoy after reading his Letter to a Hindu (1908). The present work would eve … [Click Below for Full Description]

ANTHEIL, George 1900-1959
3 measures in score from a work identified by the composer as "The Hemingway Bull Fight Ballet." Large folio (ca. 380 x 302 mm). Notated in black ink on card stock. Inscribed to the photographer "Sandy" [Sanford] Roth (1906-1962) and his wife Beulah, "in serene and reverend admiration of the present master photographer of this planet, Sandy, from their devoted friend George Antheil." Slightly worn, soiled and browned. An unusual and impressive quotation by "The Bad Boy of Music," a controversial figure in the expatriate avant-garde community of American composers in Europe in the first half of the 20th century. "The Hemingway Bull Fight Ballet" is not in Antheil's works list in Grove Music Online. Roth was an internationally-known photographer whose works appeared in such publications as Time, Life, Look, Fortune, Paris Match, and Der Stern. His subjects included James Dean and many other noted individuals, Antheil among them.

Leetham, Lt. Col. A.
London: Royal United Service Institution, 1906-1937. Undetermined. Quarto. Twenty-seven volumes. Off-white cloth with red lettering and insignia to the front board and spine. Illustrated with colour and black and white plates, as well as maps and plans. Bound volumes of all of the issues, separated by year. Corners bumped and some fading and water damage to some of the volumes. Boards beginning to bow in some volumes. Volume one appears to be missing the first issue. Overall, a presentable set. An incredibly scarce set that contains a nearly complete set of issues of The Cavalry Journal. The journal published various articles relating to cavalry topics. Especially interesting given the decline in the use of the cavalry throughout the latter volumes. 1906

Edinburgh: John Grant, 1906. Octavo. In four volumes translated by P.A. Motteux. Though originally translated at the beginning of the 17th century, Motteux's translation was chosen for the Modern Library edition since he captured so many of the nuances (which many English translators often distorted even to the point of adding English place name). Doubleday, Page & Company, New York, 1906. First edition, Doubleday, Page & Company issue, first issue with unbattered type on copyright dates. Pictorial boards. Modest foxing on the foredge and endpapers, a little bit of rubbing to the publisher's name on the spine, but else an unusually nice, near fine copy, mush less rubbed than usual. One of the few books ever published to have a direct, immediate and significant impact on American society and thought. Although Sinclair's intent was to expose the abusive labor conditions in the Chicago stockyards as a means of promoting socialism, the American public was more horrified by the novel's vivid depiction of unsanitary conditions in the slaughterhouses and meat-processing plants, and as a result the U.S. Pure Food and Drug Act was passed. A nicer than usual copy of one of the most famous, influential, and enduring of all muckraking novels. [Attributes: First Edition]

Christina G Rossetti
Hammersmith, London: 1906. Condition: Near Fine. Limited edition, one of 175 copies, octavo size, 75 pp. Christina G. Rossetti (1830-1894) is known for her melancholy love poems, originally drafted in Italian. Her early verses for her mother, written between the ages of twelve and sixteen, were printed privately at her grandfather Gaetano Polidori's press, and are here beautifully reprinted from Polidori's 1847 edition of Verses. Lucien Pissarro and his wife Esther founded the Eragny press in 1894, inspired by the arts and crafts movement and the work of William Morris of the Kelmscott Press. "Lucien Pissarro brought foriegn and unfamiliar sensibilities to his books. The distinctive use of color wood engavings which explore the Impressionist sensation endow Eragny books with a vital character unlike any other revivalist private press" (A History of the Eragny Press 1894-1914, p. 12)." DESCRIPTION: Contemporary red morocco with gilt floral medallion stamped on the upper board, gilt lettering to the backstrip, top-edge gilt, fore-edge and tail-edge uncut, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, woodcut title-vignette and initials, illustrated title printed in black and orange, Brook type, Arches paper, 8 1/2" x 5 1/4", (i)-v, (1)-75, (1 colophon), (1 errata), limited edition of 175 paper and 10 vellum copies, unnumbered (this one of the paper copies). Strobridge (1855-1932) was a native-born California writer and bookbinder, best known for her trio of novels about the Great Basin. Her bindery, Artemesia Bindery, at 231 East Avenue 41 also held her "Little Corner" gallery, and was a popular meeting place for writers, artists and craftsmen. London considered himself close to Strobridge. In a 1902 letter to Lurline Lyons, he wrote: "Oh, by the way, look up Mrs. Idah Meacham Strobridge. Tell her I sent you and she will make you very welcome. She is out in the 'Lummis Colony,' and lives in a famous house, or rather, in a house she has made famous by her own personality (Letters, vol. 3, p. 296).
