GILSON, Ed
1906. Near Fine. Hardcover. Photo album of original photographs of San Francisco after the earthquake of 1906. Oblong octavo. Cloth. Contains 21 gelatin silver photographs as well as two albumen prints, all either 7" x 5" or 5" x 4", and tipped into a blank photo album. Most of the photographs are in fine condition, in the slightly worn album. Written on the first page in an unknown, but probably later hand: "1906 San Francisco, Calif. earthquake, April 18 - lasted 48 seconds, 700 lives lost! These pictures sent to us from Uncle Ed Gilson that lived in Calif." Although we found near contemporary records of a San Francisco county clerk with this name, we could determine nothing of substance about Gilson. The images show the aftermath of the earthquake which destroyed a vast portion of the city. There are pictures of ruined buildings, torn up streets, and refugee camps. The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, was one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history, both as a result of the strong quake and the ensuing four days of fires which destroyed large portions of the city. The number of casualties was actually several thousand, although at the time city officials reported only 375 deaths (in the age before Federal aid it was more important to put up a good front and keep real estate prices high). Much of the city was rebuilt from the ground up and these photos convey both the scale of the destruction and the pluckiness of the survivors, who in several images, calmly observe the ruins of their city.

Akin, Louis
[American Lithograph Company], [Grand Canyon, AZ], 1906. Large chromolithograph [46.5 cm x 94 cm] in a contemporary wooden frame [61 cm x 108 cm] that has a gilt border and a brass plaque. Image and frame in very good condition. Image has a few small areas of subtle discoloration. This has not been examined out of the frame. There are two different sizes of this lovely work, this is the larger. Charming image of Fred Harvey's legendary lodge on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, El Tovar. This is the unofficial companion piece to Thomas Moran's chromolithograph 'The Grand Canyon of Arizona from Hermit Rim Road,' that was also produced for the Santa Fe Railroad, and like this was produced, to hang in Santa Fe Railroad offices and also to sell to tourists. This striking work that was originally painted a year after Fred Harvey opened the doors to the now legendary, El Tovar Hotel on the edge South Rim of the Grand Canyon. This opulent and faux rustic resort offered visitors an opportunity to view the natural wonder of the Grand Canyon while living in the lap of luxury. The artist of this work, Louis Akin (1868-1913), lived for a time in El Tovar and is now widely recognized for his landscapes of the Arizona wilderness and paintings of the Hopi. 1906. 5 volume study and presentation (in English) of the history of Ukiyoye painting and woodblock printmaking, defined in the preface as genre pictures and popular works depicting manners and customs of the time as opposed to classical works, including an altogether 211 pp. text distributed throughout the volumes, 156 fine text illustrations, mostly from line drawings, and 170 superb mounted plates, some in photogravure, but most from exquisitely rendered original woodblock prints done by an array of artists after the original works. Several leaves in the second volume damaged at fore-edge and into the extremities of the sheets; a sharp object pierced the chitsu case. Large folio. Illustrated paper covered boards, elaborately tie-bound in the Japanese manner, housed in damaged chitsu cases (one case lacking). Tokyo (Shimbi Shoin) 1906-1907. One of six hundred sets. A complete set of a spectacular work, marred only by some damage to the contents of the second volume, containing nearly 150 original color woodblock prints, focusing not only on the popular woodblock prints of the 18th through 20th centuries but on the entire history of Japanese genre imagery. Examples of the highest levels of painting from the Kano school forward were culled from private and public collections and include many Imperial Treasures; noted artists were asked to make exacting woodblock prints after those works. A serious art-historical undertaking; descriptions and essays were contributed by noted Japanese scholars and translated from the Japanese to English by Goodrich, a professor of English in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Barrie, J. M.; Rackham, Arthur (Illustrations)
London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1906. Rackham, Arthur. First and Limited Edition. First edition with Arthur Rackham illustrations, no. 128 of 500 copies, quarto size, 236 pp., inscribed by J. M. Barrie to the real "Peter Pan", Pauline Chase and signed by Arthur Rackham. A superb and utterly unique association copy, this volume has a very special inscription by J. M. Barrie: "To Pauline Pan / a great Peter / from a grateful / JMB", dated Dec. 16, 1928; this refers to Pauline Chase (1885-1962), an American actress who starred as Peter Pan in the London debut of the play, a role she performed from 1906-1913. Sir James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937) wrote numerous novels and plays for both children and adults, but he is best known for "Peter Pan", a hugely successful play set in the magical world of Neverland; the play has been performed many times and has been adapted in films and literary works. The beloved character first appeared in Barrie's novel "The Little White Bird"; the several chapters to feature Peter Pan are reproduced here as "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens". This deluxe edition is profusely illustrated by Arthur Rackham (1867-1939), an eminent illustrator of many books which often depict fantasy and fairy tale subjects; Rackham contributed illustrations to many popular stories, such as "Cinderella", "Sleeping Beauty", "Alice in Wonderland", and the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. Here Rackham creates fifty colour plates, one as the frontispiece and forty-nine tipped-in following the text. Interestingly, Rackham held Barrie in such high esteem that he even named his cat "Jim … [Click Below for Full Description]

MATISSE Henri
MATISSE Henri. Galerie Druet, Paris 1906, 13,5 x 18,5 cm, stapled Rare first edition of the catalogue of Henri Matisse's second personal exhibition, assembling 58 of the artist's paintings, held at the Galerie Duret between 19 March and 7 April 1906.Following the famous Salon d'Automne in October 1905, Matisse individually presents his scandalous canvases painted during his stay in Collioure, accompanied by Andre Derain, at the Galerie Druet. These brightly colored pieces, largely inspired by Gauguin, set the principles of Fauvism and give rise to criticism. The Galerie Druet catalogue includes 4 of the 10 paintings by Matisse exhibited in the "Fauves" salon VII of the Salon d'Automne some months previously, along with works by Derain, Vlaminck, Manguin, Camoin and Marquet. This consecutive exhibition at the Salon, held at the Galerie Druet, was also an opportunity for the artist to present his views of Collioure for the first time, which were absent from the Salon d'Automne which had favored Derain's landscapes - thus, included in this catalogue is the famous "Plage rouge", which marks the artist's definitive break from the imitation of color.A light sign of a vertical fold on the first wrapper, otherwise a beautiful copy.Rare illustrated catalogue comprising reproductions of 3 of Henri Matisse's works. Her bindery, Artemesia Bindery, at 231 East Avenue 41 also held her "Little Corner" gallery, and was a popular meeting place for writers, artists and craftsmen. London considered himself close to Strobridge. In a 1902 letter to Lurline Lyons, he wrote: "Oh, by the way, look up Mrs. Idah Meacham Strobridge. Tell her I sent you and she will make you very welcome. She is out in the 'Lummis Colony,' and lives in a famous house, or rather, in a house she has made famous by her own personality (Letters, vol. 3, p. 296). WITH A PAGE FROM A TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY LONDON TIPPED IN on the half-title: a quarto page of a typed letter (lacking earlier portion of letter): "... But I am learning, slowly. The great difficulty is to get the proper co-ordination of the various parts so essential to good photography... Of course I like beautiful things, but as you hint, I am too busy to be able to spend much time upon them ----as a creator or even as a collector ... the aesthetic should simply be ... one of the many things for the raising of the human." It ends poignantly: "O that the days were forty-eight hours! Then might I paint, or play, or bind beautiful … [Click Below for Full Description]
