Lehmann, Lilly, Sängerin (1848?1929)
Salzburg, 14. Aug, 1906. 3 pp. 8vo. ?Mein lieber Freund Kalbek! (BINDINGS - ZAEHNSDORF). SHAKESPEARE, WILLIAM
London: Arthur L. Humphreys, 1906. The Royal Library Belles Lettres Series. 188 x 120 mm. (6 1/2 x 5"). 2 p.l., 204 pp. The Royal Library Belles Lettres Series. VERY PRETTY DARK BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO, GILT, BY ZAEHNSDORF (stamp-signed and dated 1907 on front turn-in), covers with gilt-rule frame and elaborate cornerpieces of floral sprays on a densely stippled ground, raised bands, spine compartments with heavily stippled frame enclosing a lozenge containing a floral spring, gilt titling, turn-ins richly gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. First initial of each poem printed in red. Spine gently (and uniformly) sunned to a lighter shade (as is often the case with brown morocco), but AN ESPECIALLY FINE COPY, PRISTINE INTERNALLY, and in an unworn binding. Virtually unchanged from the day it left the press, this charming collection of the Bard's sonnets and the songs from his plays comes in a lovely, precisely tooled binding by one of the great English workshops. In his history "The Zaehnsdorfs (1842-1947)," Broomhead points out that "few firms of craft bookbinders . . . can claim an existence of longer than 100 years," and throughout its history, the Zaehnsdorf bindery has continued to produce consistently attractive and innovative designs executed with unfailing skill. The immaculate condition of this volume suggests that it was a treasured gift appreciated for its beauty and never subjected to use.

TCHAIKOVSKY, Modest, trans.) SHAKESPEARE, William.
Moscow: Tipografiya T-va I. N. Kushnerev I Ko, 1906. Moscow: Tipografiya T-va I. N. Kushnerev I Ko,, 1906. Octavo. Original printed wrappers, with the original printed glassine jacket. Housed in a custom black card box, paper label to spine and front cover. Pencil notation to rear panel of glassine. Pages partly unopened. Wear at spine ends, glassine chipped with discreet repairs to joints. Still a very good copy in the rare glassine. First edition of this translation into Russian by Modest Tchaikovsky (1850-1916), the younger brother of the composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and a respected dramatist, librettist, poet and translator in his own right, with his plays drawing a large attendance and with many prominent actors performing in them. His translation of Shakespeare's Richard II presents the English and his Russian text side by side, the first edition to do so. There had been two prose and four verse translations into Russian of the tragedy prior to Tchaikovsky's, the first in 1841, but they gave little attention to the rhyme, metre, rhythm and structure of the original. Tchaikovsky sets out to be as close as possible to the original text. "Non-observance of rhyme, or elongation of line, are exceptionally rare in his translation. It should be remembered that Tchaikovsky's translation was something of an experiment, one of the first (and in the history of translations of Richard II, the very first) attempts by a translator, at whatever cost, to keep within the framework set by the original of rhyme, rhythm, number of lines, and given this, to be as close as possible … [Click Below for Full Description]

A very good copy of this fragile book, often complete with the tab missing. Internally very good. First edition, first issue with "London & New York" on the rear cover. At the start of 1906 Beatrix Potter planner three books in a panoramic format, with 14 pictures and 14 pages of text: The Story of Miss Moppet, The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit, and The Sly Old Cat, but only the first two were published. Issued for the 1906 Christmas market, the books were too easily damaged, so "the shops sensibly refused to stock them because they got unrolled and so bad to fold up again" Potter wrote in (Linder, p.183). The panoramic design was subsequently dropped and the books brought into line with the rest of the series in 1916. [Attributes: First Edition]

Mackail, J.W. [J.R.R. Tolkien]
John Murray, London, 1906. First edition, early impression of Mackail's standard Latin textbook. J.R.R. Tolkien's copy with two ownership inscriptions to the front free endpaper, the first of which is in an early hand in all capital letters, "J.R.R. Tolkien Class I. KEHS October 1st 1907" and a later inscription with a cursive signature, "Oct. 1909 J.R.R. Tolkien." Octavo, original cloth with gilt titles to the spine. Tolkien was raised in Edgbaston, Birmingham and attended King Edward's School from 1900-1911. The dates of the inscriptions are of particular importance as they mark the flowering of Tolkien's interest in language; during these years he would begin the development of his first fictional languages, based largely on his studies of Anglo-Saxon and Latin with the present volume. In very good condition. The text has been crossed out by a subsequent owner. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A scarce a desirable illustration of the young Tolkien's early linguistic education, interest, and development. Both Tolkien's academic career and his literary production are inseparable from his love of language and philology. He specialized in English philology at university and in 1915 graduated with Old Norse as his special subject. Parallel to Tolkien's professional work as a philologist, and sometimes overshadowing this work, to the effect that his academic output remained rather thin, was his affection for constructing languages. The most developed of these are Quenya and Sindarin, the etymological connection between which formed the core of much of Tolkien's l … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1906. Rackham, Arthur. First and Limited Edition. First edition with Arthur Rackham illustrations, no. 128 of 500 copies, quarto size, 236 pp., inscribed by J. M. Barrie to the real "Peter Pan", Pauline Chase and signed by Arthur Rackham. A superb and utterly unique association copy, this volume has a very special inscription by J. M. Barrie: "To Pauline Pan / a great Peter / from a grateful / JMB", dated Dec. 16, 1928; this refers to Pauline Chase (1885-1962), an American actress who starred as Peter Pan in the London debut of the play, a role she performed from 1906-1913. Sir James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937) wrote numerous novels and plays for both children and adults, but he is best known for "Peter Pan", a hugely successful play set in the magical world of Neverland; the play has been performed many times and has been adapted in films and literary works. The beloved character first appeared in Barrie's novel "The Little White Bird"; the several chapters to feature Peter Pan are reproduced here as "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens". This deluxe edition is profusely illustrated by Arthur Rackham (1867-1939), an eminent illustrator of many books which often depict fantasy and fairy tale subjects; Rackham contributed illustrations to many popular stories, such as "Cinderella", "Sleeping Beauty", "Alice in Wonderland", and the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. Here Rackham creates fifty colour plates, one as the frontispiece and forty-nine tipped-in following the text. New York: Fox Duffield & Company, 1906. First Edition. Hardcover. In exceptionally good condition. Octavo, [18cm/7.5inches], full gilt-embossed cypress-green cloth sans dust jacket, pp. ix, 160, indexed. Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. Addressed to a western audience, The Book of tea was originally written in English and is one of the great English tea classics. Okakura had been taught at a young age to speak English and was proficient at communicating his thoughts to the Western mind. In his book, he discusses such topics as Zen and Taoism, but also the secular aspects of tea and Japanese life. The book emphasizes how Teaism taught the Japanese many things; most importantly, simplicity. Kakuz argues that this tea-induced simplicity affected art and architecture, and he was a long-time student of the visual arts. In the book, Kakuz states that Teaism, in itself, is one of the profound universal remedies that two parties could sit down to. Kakuz went on to mention that tea has been the subject of many historical events, such as peace treaties and the like. He ends the book with a chapter on Tea Masters, and spends some time talking about Sen no Riky and his contribution to the Japanese tea ceremony. According to Tomonobu Imamichi, Heidegger's concept of Dasein in Sein und Zeit was inspired – although Heidegger remained silent on this – by Okakura Kakuz 's concept of das-in-der-Welt-sein (being-in-the-worldness) expressed in The Book of Tea to describe Zhuangzi's philosophy, which Imamichi's professor Ito Kichin … [Click Below for Full Description]
