Hi, Here we have a 1906 Original Hardback Wisden, in Good+ Condition. With an interesting anomali. The gilt has a slight fade to front board and the spine, the boards are very clean, small knock to one corner. Nice hinges, slight weakness if being picky. Clean pages inside and nice photoplate. Pin prick mark to the spine cloth as shown. There is one oddity which I have shown in the video below as it is quite unusual, the book was printed incorrectly on page xxix. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

(Daimler Manufacturing Company)
Long Island City, New York: Daimler Manufacturing Company, 1906. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Slim octavo, unpaginated [32pp.]., illustrated. Brown paper-covered boards with gilt decoration, and tipped-in illustrations. Spine ends worn, gilt faded on front board, and some internal soiling at the gutter on most leaves. Tipped-in illustrations mostly well-preserved, though a few are partly creased. A good copy only of this landmark publication of early automobilia, which advertised American "copies" of German Mercedes vehicles, and makes a sales pitch against their competition - the actual German-made imported Mercedes vehicles. Printed on high-quality paper and with stunningly detailed tipped-in illustrations of the crank shaft, sparking mechanism, and other parts, this promotional volume is a true rarity. We locate just four copies in OCLC (Henry Ford, NYHS, Brooklyn Pub Lib, British Library) at the time of listing. This slim tract was reprinted in facsimile in the 1960s, although that reprint (with its images printed directly onto the paper and not tipped-in) lacks to some extent the sophistication of this true original. Though regrettable in terms of condition, still a perfectly decent reading or reference copy of this important tract in the history of early American automobile manufacturing; also suitable for restoration by a professional conservator.

[Chicago], 1906. 30 unbound, hole-punched sheets laying out a never-realized plan for relocated the Field Museum of Natural History to Grant Park. Good. Cover toned but the interior pages are clean, with a few instances of marginalia, the last page has a tear running half the width and a few chips but without any textual loss. The study concerns itself with three aspects of museum design, namely interior requirements, exterior effect, and landscape setting. The author thoroughly discusses methods of lighting the exhibits and interior, as well as the design and layout of the building to deal with anticipated crowds. As support for their plan to build the museum in sections, the authors attach an exhibit listing the square footage expansions of other world-class museums like the Museum of Natural History in New York, the Brooklyn Museum of Art & Science, the National Museum in Washington, D.C., the British Museum in London, and the Museum of Natural History in Paris. At the rear, a brief history of each museum is included. This work bears no clear authorship clues, but Daniel Burnham worked with Marshall Field in 1905 and 1906 on a plan to relocated the museum to Grant Park. This never came to fruition and the new location was built just south of the park at the current Museum Campus. That fact, together with the manuscript note on the cover describing this report as "an earlier plan being considered," makes it possible that this is Burnham's vision for the Field Museum that could have been. Virgil
Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1906. Finely bound example one of 650 numbered copies of Virgil's masterpiece and widely considered the finest piece of Latin literature. Quarto, 2 volumes, bound in contemporary full black morocco, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised bands, gilt tooling to the front panels, inner dentelles, top edge gilt, with 17 full-page plates including the frontispieces which are supplied in a colored and uncolored state. Translated by Christopher Pearse Cranch. In near fine condition. An exceptional presentation. The Aeneid is a Latin epic poem, written by Virgil between 29 and 19 BC, that tells the legendary story of Aeneas, a Trojan who traveled to Italy, where he became the ancestor of the Romans. It comprises 9,896 lines in dactylic hexameter. The first six of the poem's twelve books tell the story of Aeneas's wanderings from Troy to Italy, and the poem's second half tells of the Trojans' ultimately victorious war upon the Latins, under whose name Aeneas and his Trojan followers are destined to be subsumed. The hero Aeneas was already known to Greco-Roman legend and myth, having been a character in the Iliad. Virgil took the disconnected tales of Aeneas's wanderings, his vague association with the foundation of Rome and his description as a personage of no fixed characteristics other than a scrupulous pietas, and fashioned the Aeneid into a compelling founding myth or national epic that tied Rome to the legends of Troy, explained the Punic Wars, glorified traditional Roman virtues, and legitimized the Julio-Claudian dynasty as descendants … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Chicago]: [1906]. Paperback. Good. Item #3942.

Virgil
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1906. Virgil took the disconnected tales of Aeneas's wanderings, his vague association with the foundation of Rome and his description as a personage of no fixed characteristics other than a scrupulous pietas, and fashioned the Aeneid into a compelling founding myth or national epic that tied Rome to the legends of Troy, explained the Punic Wars, glorified traditional Roman virtues, and legitimized the Julio-Claudian dynasty as descendant … [Click Below for Full Description]

UTOPIAN COMMUNES] [FLORIDA] "CYRUS / KORESH" (pseud. of Cyrus
Guiding Star Publishing House, 1906. First Edition. Early run of this periodical edited and written by Dr. Cyrus R. Teed, a Utica, NY native and founder of the Koreshan Unity. "Koreshanity," as it was also known, was born in the wake of two related movements: the millenial fervor that swept early-to-mid-19th century central and western New York State, and the utopian communalism that began attracting increasing numbers of adherents during the same period and into the later 19th century." A graduate of Eclectic Medical College of the City of New York, Teed's interests went beyond medicine to encompass alchemy, botany, physics and metaphysics, and he would regularly conduct experiments in these areas inside his medical laboratory. It was in this laboratory in 1869 that "Teed conceived what would become known as Koreshanity after experiencing a late-night religious vision. During what he called his "illumination," he saw a beautiful woman who revealed to him a series of universal truths which formed the fundamental principles of Koreshan belief." Among Teed's most interesting beliefs was cellular cosmogony, or the hollow earth - the notion that the earth was not a convex sphere but instead a hollow, concave cell containing the entire universe with the sun at its center. After failed attempts at founding communal settlements in Moravia, Syracuse, and New York City, Teed moved to Chicago, IL, where his persuasive oratory enabled him to assemble a firm core of followers in the late 1880's and form the commune called Beth-Ophra. Teed incorporated his organization there as the Coll … [Click Below for Full Description]

The unattributed review tipped into this copy praises the collection, writing: 'The tales, short books rather than long stories, as they are, have each and all the thrill and touch of mystery, terror, and unearthly passion that belong to their author and to few besides . Each tale should be read on its own vivid and striking merit for its full effect to be gained'. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Hobbes, John Oliver (Pseudonym of Pearl Mary Teresa Craigie)
London T. Fisher Unwin 1906. First edition. The book is firmly bound in the publisher's cream and blue cloth, lettered and illustrated in red, black, yellow, pink and green, the extremities are bumped and rubbed. The text block is toned and slightly foxed. The dust jacket is the original, it is toned and grubby with areas of loss, rubbing and creasing, there are also splits at the folds and closed tears, however it has been professionally conserved with the judicious application of tissue to the reverse. Not particularly uncommon as a first edition, but very uncommon In the dust jacket, which utilises the same Aubrey Beardsley artwork(originally purchased by Unwin for an earlier poster) as the book and also features advertising for other Unwin titles to both the rear panel and flap. Despite the mention of a business in the title, and the woman in the illustration gazing longingly across a street at a bookshop, this is sadly not a story about a woman who dreams of owning and running a bookshop, it seems from a quick skim to be a novel revolving around love, marriage and human relations, though I may have missed the crucial sections that mention the bookshop. Scribner, G H
Yonkers [ NY ]: not published, 1906. Unique.. Contemporary (1907) three quarter morocco; signed binding.. A very good copy with a brown spot on the rear cover appx. 1.5 inches in diameter.. 4to. There are watercolors and photographs to accompany the manuscript. Gilbert H Scribner was the Sect'y. of State for New York, wealthy, and part of the social blue book. In 1906 he and his wife, Sarah Woodbury Pettingill, celebrated their golden anniversary. This volume is a compilation of the event ephemera, i.e., the scores of cards, greetings, and sentiments of the occasion. It is an elaborate example of period book production. The binding was commissioned and executed by Ralph Randolph Adams; it bears his studio stamp on the inside front cover with the date 1907. The illustrations accompanying the text are original watercolors - with one particularly fetching rendering of the Hudson River looking south from the residence at Inglehurst. In additon to the full page watercolors there are a series of photographs of the life of the couple. The major portion of the ' text ' is made up of mounted ALs's that were sent to the couple for their celebration. The narrative portion of the chronicle is all calligraphy. .
