Kipling, Rudyard - Ellen Terry interest
London: Macmillan. First printing, 1906. Red cloth gilt in dust jacket, with actress Ellen Terry's bookplate. Good+ in very good dust jacket, some discoloration to rear board and light soil and spottiness to endpapers, top outer corner of text a bit bumped, small engraved bookplate on flyleaf, Ellen Terry's bookplate on pastedown; dust jacket very good indeed with light soil to front panel and very light edge-loss to spine ends. Illustrated children's fantasy stories with Shakespeare's fairy character Puck from Midsummer Night's Dream a connecting motif. Terry's first role as an eight year old was as Puck, in 1856. Terry was known to recite Kipling's verse on occasion, and Kipling attended some of her performances, but there is no evidence that Terry and Kipling were particularly close. Nonetheless, given Terry's childhood role as Puck, an excellent association copy and very rare to find early Kipling in a dust jacket. Good / very good.

[Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von]
The Doves Press, 1906. Limited Edition. Vellum. One of 300 copies, octavo size, 261 pp., in German. Near fine. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a German statesman and a prolific writer whose work includes novels, poetry, dramas, and literary criticism; he was an early participant of the Sturm und Drang literary movement and rose to fame early in life with the publication of "The Sorrows of Young Werther". His best-known drama, "Faust", is the story of a man who makes a deal with Mephistopheles in order to achieve whatever he wants; "Faust" was massively influential and the idea of "making a deal with the devil" has been repeated numerous times in subsequent literature, plays, and films. The story of Faust reveals the depths and desperations of human nature in the earthly gamble for fame and fortune. This publication by The Doves Press is Part One of "Faust", the second part being printed in 1910; the German text from the 1887 Weimar edition of the play is printed, bound in beautiful limp vellum by the Doves Bindery. The Doves Press, founded by T. J. Cobden-Sanderson, was entirely self-sufficient, designing, printing, and binding its own books, and even cutting its own typeface for use in its publications; the books it published were often chosen for their typographical challenges, and were designed and printed with a simple elegance that did justice to the works' literary merits and the Press's skill and innovation. ___DESCRIPTION: Full limp vellum, gilt lettering on the spine, fore- and bottom edges rough cut, characters and stage directions printed in red, with … [Click Below for Full Description]

TABAKA, SEIKO (Artist):
1906. Folio (22.5 x 32.5 cm). A collection of 150 wonderful woodblock-printed designs for kimonos, all rendered in rich and vivid colours, some heightened with metallic inks, protected by tissue guards. Each volume has two preliminary pages and one colophon at end. The folded leaves are bound in the traditional Japanese style. Original paper wrappers, front covers printed in different colours, ribbon ties. The volumes are subtitled: tsuki (moon), hana (flower) and yuki (snow) respectively. An impressive large-size design book with motifs clearly inspired by nature which was common at this time. The covers are lightly rubbed but overall the books are in lovely condition. Books with kimono designs originated in Kyoto where the tradition of fashion innovation and book publishing started in the 17th century. At the end of the 19th century when Japan's economy boomed the textile industry thrived and the customers of traditional kimonos were eager to order new designs with modern patterns. This particular set of kimono designs seems very rare. We haven't been able to find any complete set in a western institution (Thomas Watson Library, N.Y. has volume 2 & 3). In Japan two complete copies are to be found at Osaka and Kyoto Industrial University. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Donnadieux, A. -L. / Fabre, Charles
Gauthier-Villars, 1906. 2 titles in one volume. VIII, 248, [V]-VII, [1] pages + 20 plates + [249]-251 pages. Second title [1]-207 pages. Half calf over marbled boards. Large 8vo. 6 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches. Light browning to pages. Near Fine. Boards. The first title, "Traite de photographie stereoscopique. Theorie et pratique," was originally issued with the 20 plates in a separate cloth-backed portfolio. Here the plates have been bound in. Both titles are scarce, with Fabre's work not present in the Epstean collection as of this writing. Both titles deal with the theory and practice of stereoscopy. This artform / photographic technique allows the photographer to take a photograph which can be viewed later in three dimensions. It is accomplished by taking the same image with 2 lenses slightly separated from one another, which when viewed through a stereoscope with similarly separated lenses allows the viewer to see depth in the image. A fascinating parlor trick since the 1850s and still something that wows the public who often hasn't seen it. Both titles are scarce, with fewer than a dozen examples in book form in library systems participating in Worldcat/OCLC.

Rossetti, Christina G.; Symon, J. D. (Editor); Pissarro, Lucien
Eragny Press, 1906. Pissarro, Lucien. Limited Edition. Leather. Limited edition, one of 175 copies, octavo size, 75 pp. Near Fine. Christina G. Rossetti (1830-1894) is known for her melancholy love poems, originally drafted in Italian. Her early verses for her mother, written between the ages of twelve and sixteen, were printed privately at her grandfather Gaetano Polidori's press, and are here beautifully reprinted from Polidori's 1847 edition of Verses. Lucien Pissarro and his wife Esther founded the Eragny press in 1894, inspired by the arts and crafts movement and the work of William Morris of the Kelmscott Press. "Lucien Pissarro brought foriegn and unfamiliar sensibilities to his books. The distinctive use of color wood engavings which explore the Impressionist sensation endow Eragny books with a vital character unlike any other revivalist private press" (A History of the Eragny Press 1894-1914, p. 12)." ___DESCRIPTION: Contemporary red morocco with gilt floral medallion stamped on the upper board, gilt lettering to the backstrip, top-edge gilt, fore-edge and tail-edge uncut, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, woodcut title-vignette and initials, illustrated title printed in black and orange, Brook type, Arches paper, 8 1/2" x 5 1/4", (i)-v, (1)-75, (1 colophon), (1 errata), limited edition of 175 paper and 10 vellum copies, unnumbered (this one of the paper copies). ___CONDITION: A near fine copy, sumptuous red morocco completely unscathed, leaves are very bright except for faint age-toning to the outer page margins, ex-library copy with minimal evidence, with Bancro … [Click Below for Full Description]

In 1888 introduceert John Dunlop luchtbanden. [Click Below for Full Description]

LONDON, Jack
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1906. 8vo. 273, [4] pp. ads at end. Original blue decorated cloth with designer's initial's "RR," top edges gilt. Slightly cocked, light wear at extremities. Item #207594 FIRST EDITION. Idah Meacham Strobridge's copy, signed by her in Los Angeles, 1907 on front free endpaper. Strobridge (1855-1932) was a native-born California writer and bookbinder, best known for her trio of novels about the Great Basin. Her bindery, Artemesia Bindery, at 231 East Avenue 41 also held her "Little Corner" gallery, and was a popular meeting place for writers, artists and craftsmen. London considered himself close to Strobridge. In a 1902 letter to Lurline Lyons, he wrote: "Oh, by the way, look up Mrs. Idah Meacham Strobridge. Tell her I sent you and she will make you very welcome. She is out in the 'Lummis Colony,' and lives in a famous house, or rather, in a house she has made famous by her own personality (Letters, vol. 3, p. 296). WITH A PAGE FROM A TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY LONDON TIPPED IN on the half-title: a quarto page of a typed letter (lacking earlier portion of letter): "... But I am learning, slowly. The great difficulty is to get the proper co-ordination of the various parts so essential to good photography... Of course I like beautiful things, but as you hint, I am too busy to be able to spend much time upon them ----as a creator or even as a collector ... the aesthetic should simply be ... one of the many things for the raising of the human." THOREAU, Henry David
Boston: Houghton Mifflin and Company, 1906. Manuscript Edition. Hardcover. Light wear. Near Fine with an exceptional manuscript offering. Large octavo (6" x 8-3/4"), 20 volumes bound in original green buckram. Illustrated with a folding map of Concord and 103 plates with lettered tissue guards. Manuscript edition, in original binding. Number 536 of 600 sets SIGNED by the publisher and with an ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT sheet by Thoreau tipped into the first volume. The two page manuscript fragment comprises 55 lines, much of it with a big "X" by Thoreau over the text. What is not crossed out, however, is one of Thoreau's best-known paragraphs from his important essay, LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE: "Just so hollow and ineffectual, for the most part, is our ordinary conversation. Surface meets surface. When our life ceases to be inward and private, conversation degenerates into mere gossip. We rarely meet a man who can tell us any news which he has not read in a newspaper, or been told by his neighbors, and, for the most part, the only difference between us & our fellow, is that he has seen the newspaper, or been out to tea, & we have not. In proportion as our inward life fails, we go more constantly & desperately to the post office." The rest of the paragraph, not present here: "you may depend on it, that the poor fellow who walks away with the greatest number of letters, proud of his extensive correspondence, has not heard from himself this long while." Most of the manuscript has been "X"ed by Thoreau and may or may not be published, but certainly is interesting. In part: "Mere number … [Click Below for Full Description]

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: White Fang is a novel by American author Jack London (1876-1916) -- and the name of the book's eponymous character, a wild wolfdog. First serialized in Outing magazine, it was published in 1906. The story takes place in Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories, Canada, during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush and details White Fang's journey to domestication. It is a companion novel (and a thematic mirror) to London's best-known work, The Call of the Wild, which is about a kidnapped, domesticated dog embracing his wild ancestry to survive and thrive in the wild. Jesse COE
Indianapolis, IN: N.P, 1906. Condition: Thin strip of paper reinforcement along top edge verso, a few faint folds and small tears; brief penciled notation to left of portrait; Very Good, clean example, without loss. Original lithographed wanted poster, with text and photographic portrait printed in black on recto only; measures 10.75" x 7". A reward bulletin issued by the Indianapolis, IN Chief of Police, Robert Metzger, for gunman Jesse Coe (alias Cole). About 8pm on the night of September 30, 1906, Coe shot officer Charles J. Russell at close range in a neighborhood near 24th Street and Indianapolis Avenue; he was later taken to an Indianapolis hospital, where he died of his wound. Russell's partner, Edward J. Petticord, chased after the alleged gunman (Coe), and was shot in the back by another suspect. Petticord died two days later, and the man accused of killing Petticord was arrested, convicted, and hanged at the Indiana State Prison in February, 1907. Law enforcement officials launched a nationwide manhunt for Coe, who was believed to have left Indianapolis by train, disguised as a laborer. Two years after the shooting, Coe's cousin led authorities to him while he was squirrel hunting in Kentucky; when approached by authorities, Coe was shot dead after pointing his rifle at them. The broadside is rare, with no example held by any OCLC member institution. A presumably later example is held by Kent State, offering a higher reward of $1500 for Coe. Of particular interest on the present example is the penciled notation to the left of Coe's portrait, stating "Capd. Shot - … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alfred Stieglitz
Rochester, NY: Eastman Kodak Co, 1906. Condition: First edition (first printing). Complete with all tipped-in images. A near fine copy in wrappers. Corners a bit bumped; some offsetting from tipped in images to the blank facing pages. [14 leaves]; letterpress, offset lithography, and 10 mounted original photographs (including a vignette on the cover). Among the original photographs are prints by Eduard Steichen (Lady and Child, which won first prize in the contest; probably printed from a copy negative); Alfred Stieglitz (Soap Bubbles; believed to have been printed from the original negative); and Harold Baker (The Fairy Tale, "re-developed", according to the caption). Kodak announced a large photography contest for 1905, looking to spur popular adoption of photography. The winning entries were shown in New York and other locations as part of a touring exhibit. The winning images mostly show the influence of the Photo-Secession movement. In addition to reproducing some of the winning entries, Kodak used this publication to showcase various types of photographic paper and processes. The papers used for the original tipped-in prints are Velvet Velox, Portrait Velox, Sepia Paper, Carbon Velox, W-D Platinum, and Mezzo-Tone. The Souvenir was apparently produced in small numbers, perhaps for the New York exhibit at Madison Square Garden Concert Hall in November 1906. In any case, it's rather uncommon now, with just four holdings in OCLC (nos. 4017664 and 195139087). The only sale at auction in recent years was Swann Galleries' 2013 sale no. 2335, lot 20, $5250. L N TOLSTOY
Moskva: Posrednik, 1906. Condition: Wrappers rather faded and toned along extremities, general wear from handling, small dampstain to upper cover, else About Very Good overall. Slim octavo (20cm.); original green photo-illustrated wrappers; 85pp. Contemporary ownership signature to upper cover. Autobiographical essay on the author's spiritual evolution penned shortly after Tolstoy turned to Christian anarchism in his late-middle age. Inspired by his reading of Schopenhauer's "The World as Will and Representation," the author describes emerging from a midlife crisis and a break from his literary past. Tolstoy was raised in the Greek Orthodox Church, though by his teenage years was no longer practicing his childhood faith. Instead, the author writes early on in this essay, "I endeavoured to reach perfection in intellectual attainments" (as quoted from Thomas Sharper Knowlson's Leo Tolstoy: A Biographical and Critical Study (1904), p. 42). By late middle age the prospect of reaching literary and intellectual perfection no longer appealed to Tolstoy, who instead turned towards spiritual introspection. As he describes it, his melancholia immediately lessened when he said "God is life," though the author would not write of his Christian beliefs until the publication of What I Believe (also known as My Religion) in 1884. The influence of Tolstoy's religious works have been far-reaching, especially in their bid for nonviolent resistance, the most notable reader and practitioner arguably being Mahatma Gandhi, who wrote to Tolstoy after reading his Letter to a Hindu (1908). The prese … [Click Below for Full Description]
