Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" is a fictional story about a Lithuanian family's immigration to America and the hardships they face living in the slums of Chicago. Sinclair himself went undercover in the meat packing industry of Chicago and his experiences led to the creation of this book. The book was refused by several publishers who found it too shocking to print. The novel focused heavily on the plight of the working man, the exploitation of women and children, and the corruption of those in power; but what caused the most uproar was the use of diseased animals for food production. As a result … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rossetti, Christina G.; Symon, J. D. (Editor); Pissarro, Lucien (Illustrator)
Hammersmith, London: Eragny Press, [1906]. Pissarro, Lucien. Limited Edition. Limited edition, one of 175 copies, octavo size, 75 pp. Christina G. Rossetti (1830-1894) is known for her melancholy love poems, originally drafted in Italian. Her early verses for her mother, written between the ages of twelve and sixteen, were printed privately at her grandfather Gaetano Polidori's press, and are here beautifully reprinted from Polidori's 1847 edition of Verses. Lucien Pissarro and his wife Esther founded the Eragny press in 1894, inspired by the arts and crafts movement and the work of William Morris of the Kelmscott Press. "Lucien Pissarro brought foriegn and unfamiliar sensibilities to his books. The distinctive use of color wood engavings which explore the Impressionist sensation endow Eragny books with a vital character unlike any other revivalist private press" (A History of the Eragny Press 1894-1914, p. 12)." ___DESCRIPTION: Contemporary red morocco with gilt floral medallion stamped on the upper board, gilt lettering to the backstrip, top-edge gilt, fore-edge and tail-edge uncut, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, woodcut title-vignette and initials, illustrated title printed in black and orange, Brook type, Arches paper, 8 1/2" x 5 1/4", (i)-v, (1)-75, (1 colophon), (1 errata), limited edition of 175 paper and 10 vellum copies, unnumbered (this one of the paper copies). ___CONDITION: A near fine copy, sumptuous red morocco completely unscathed, leaves are very bright except for faint age-toning to the outer page margins, ex-library copy with minimal evidence, with Ban … [Click Below for Full Description]

Edited by Chauncey L. Canfield
Morgan Shepard Company, San Francisco, 1906. First edition of this early twentieth century California gold mining diary, "kept by Alfred T. Jackson, a pioneer California miner, from May 18, 1850 to June 17, 1852." Octavo, original cloth over illustrated boards, frontispiece map titled, "The Land of the 49er: Yuba, Sierra, and Nevada Countries", top edge green. Presentation copy, inscribed by the editor on the front free endpaper, "Mr. Willis Polk, Compliments of the author Chauncey L. Canfield San Francisco February 4th 1908." One of only 2000 copies, 1200 of which were destroyed in the San Francisco fire of 1906. From the library of Harold L. Mack III with his bookplate and ownership signature and address. In very good condition. Uncommon signed and inscribed. In his preface to the work, Canfield explains: "There lately came into possession of the editor of the text that follows this preface a stout, leather-bound book of some three hundred pages, containing a jumble of accounts and records and happenings related to the cost of provisions and supplies to notes of the doings of mining chums and neighbors. Bearing every evidence of genuineness, it purported to be the experiences of one Alfred T. Jackson, a pioneer miner who cabined and worked on Rock Creek, Nevada County, California." There has since been some question as to the authenticity of the work, perhaps suggesting it to be a work of fiction rather than an historical account. Hi, Here we have a 1906 Original Hardback Wisden, in Good+ Condition. With an interesting anomali. The gilt has a slight fade to front board and the spine, the boards are very clean, small knock to one corner. Nice hinges, slight weakness if being picky. Clean pages inside and nice photoplate. Pin prick mark to the spine cloth as shown. There is one oddity which I have shown in the video below as it is quite unusual, the book was printed incorrectly on page xxix. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

RUSSIAN REVOLUTION] [TSAR NICHOLAS II
Tip. Uchilishcha Glukhonimikh' (M. Alenevoi, 1906. Quite a scarce and early popular edition of the October Manifesto, and the only such to have been published under this title. The Manifesto was issued by Tsar Nicholas II in response to a wave of violence and worker strikes. The success of the Manifesto, which offered the population the promise of basic civilian rights, was shortlived. This edition published by a Ukrainian (and presumably imperialist) publisher in St. Petersburg. 12mo (17cm.); publisher's yellow wrappers; 16pp. Wrappers both separated but present, stock exceedingly brittle with shallow losses and light toning along extremities, ownership signature and rubberstamps to upper cover; textblock disbound. Good only, though internal leaves remain fresh. This edition unlocated in OCLC as of January, 2019.

EINSTEIN, ALBERT
Leipzig, 1906. First journal edition of Einstein s doctoral thesis, revised, and first edition of his second paper on Brownian motion. Signed and dated 1950 by Einstein on p. 289 at the beginning of his thesis. In this landmark work Einstein combined the techniques of classical hydrodynamics with those of the theory of diffusion to create a new method for the determination of molecular sizes and of Avogadro s number, a method he applied to solute sugar molecules. Einstein s concerns extended beyond this particular question to more general problems of the foundations of the theory of radiation and the existence of atoms. He later emphasized A precise determination of the size of molecules seems to me of the highest importance because Planck s radiation formula can be tested more precisely through such a determination through measurements on radiation. The dissertation also marked the first major success in Einstein s effort to find further evidence for the atomic hypothesis, an effort that culminated in his explanation of Brownian motion. By the end of 1905 he had published three independent methods for determining molecular dimensions (Stachel, Einstein s Miraculous Year. Five Papers that Changed the Face of Physics). Einstein s biographer, physicist Abraham Pais, observed: It is not sufficiently realized that Einstein s thesis is one of his most fundamental papers. Histories and biographies invariably refer to 1905 as the miraculous year because of his article on relativity, the light-quantum, and Brownian motion. In my opinion, the thesis is on a par with the Brownian mot … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contains 57 black and white or sepia toned photographs with hand coloring measuring between 7.5" x 5.5" and 8" x 6", some with captions. Some small tears and chips thus near fine. A photo album from the early 20th Century featuring hand colored photographs in and around San Francisco shortly before and after the Great Earthquake of 1906. The photographs are attractive and well-composed with nice hand coloring. The photographs at the beginning of the album are from the Muir Woods in California with the trees colored brown and red. Images show people on giant felled redwoods, walking around through the forest posing, and a group in an automobile riding down a forest trail. These are followed by images of Mission Santa Barbara, Mission San Gabriel, Santa Clara Mission, the Cathedral of San Carlos Borromeo in Monterey, and the Old Mission Santa Ines. There are more than a dozen images of natural wonders including mountains, lakes, farms, and the coastline, as well as sailboats, oil wells, and an ostrich farm. The latter half of the album features photographs of San Francisco after the recent earthquake in 1906, greatly contrasting with the first image in the album of a pristine skyline. The photographs show the true devastation of both the earthquake and fires in San Francisco during this time with images of several destroyed buildings including the San Francisco City Hall with onlookers surveying the damage.
