New York: The Macmillan Co, 1906. Bull, Charles Livingston. Hard Cover. First Edition. Very Good. Illustrated by Charles Livingston Bull. First edition, second issue with tipped-in title page as usual. Publisher's vertically ribbed gray-green decorative cloth designed and signed by "CX", with gilt lettering to the spine, wolf illustration and lettering stamped in black and white to the front board. A very good copy with some light wear and toning to extremities, rubbing to the front board, very slight lean to spine, corners bumped, and a few scattered spots throughout a generally clean interior. Overall, a handsome copy. BAL 11896. Originally published serially in Outing magazine from May-October 1906, White Fang is a companion novel to its predecessor, The Call of the Wild. The novel is written from the point of view of the titular main character, a wolf-dog named White Fang, as he transitions into domestication. The novel is set in the Yukon Territory in Canada during the Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890s. White Fang is the thematic opposite of its companion text; while The Call of the Wild concerns a dog's natural wild instincts, White Fang is about an undomesticated creature's ability to be tamed. THEODORE ROOSEVELT
Washington, D.C. Typed Letter Signed as President, to Rev. Franklin C. Smith, January 24, 1906, Washington, D.C. On White House stationery, with five words added in his hand. 4 pp., 8 x 10 1/2 in. Decades before the landmark Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade, a passionate Roosevelt expresses his concern for the morality and "virility" of the American people. "As you are a minister of the Gospel I think I ought to say to you that I am so sure of it that I feel that no man who is both intelligent and decent can differ with me ." Complete Transcript January 24, 1906My Dear Sir: I entirely agree with you that I should be very sure of my ground before giving public utterance to my opinions. As to the subject to which you refer, I am absolutely sure; and as you are a minister of the Gospel I think I ought to say to you that I am so sure of it that I feel that no man who is both intelligent and decent can differ with me. I mean this literally. It is not a debatable subject. I enclose you a copy of my address to the Mother's Congress. What I have said there is such plain common-sense truth that it is not open to question. Men may differ about the tariff, or about currency, or about expansion; but the man who questions the attitude I take in this matter is, I firmly believe, either lacking in intelligence or else lacking in character. The attitude you seem tentatively inclined to favor is one of astounding folly as well as of astounding immorality. STEVENS, Nettie Maria
Carnegie Institution of Washington, 1906. FIRST EDITION With 15 total plates. Original publisher's cloth, library markings on front covers, tear in first free endpaper of Volume II, interiors otherwise excellent. Bookplates of Cornell University Library noting the gift on Hon. A.D. White (withdrawn stamp), and the ownership signature of Mark A. Cukierski. First edition of this monumental study of chromosomal sex determination in the sperm and egg cells of insect species, an early example of XY sex-determination. The work describes Stevens' research on the generation of sperm cells (spermatogenesis) and their role in the fertilization of egg cells, with a focus on chromosomal differences in sperm cells. Part I, published in 1905, investigates a theory first noted by Clarence Erwin McClung, that an odd number of chromosomes found in insects from some species formed a basis of sexual determination by which an extra chromosome caused cells to differentiate differently than normal. Stevens investigates the theory as a potential sex determination mechanism. The results of additional research are published in Part II, which focuses on beetles, and her search for sexual differentiation mechanisms in similar species to confirm sex determination by a distinct chromosomal element. Stevens devotes much of her work describing chromosomes in both germ cells (precursor cells to egg and sperm cells) and somatic cells and her ability to determine which chromosome will result in the development of a male or female. Stevens provides one of the first observations of XY sex-determination, allow … [Click Below for Full Description]

1906. Condition: Very good. [FRENCH LITERATURE XXth - BOOKS OF THE FIFTEEN - CHARLES PEGUY] ROLLAND (Roman) 1866-1944 Romain Rolland, born in Clamecy (nièvre) on January 29, 1866 and died December 30, 1944 in Vézelay is a winner of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1915, french writer. A culture forged by the passion for art and music (Opera, Michelangelo, Scarlatti, Lully, Beethoven, friendship with Richard Strauss) and the cult of the hero, he sought his life during a way of communion between men. His demand for justice prompted him to want peace "above the fray" during and after the first world war. It is animated by a humanistic ideals and the quest for a non-violent world, by his admiration for Léon Tolstoy, great figure of nonviolence, by the philosophies of India (conversations with Rabindranath Tagore and Gandhi), the teaching of Ramakrishna and Vivekananda, by his fascination for Abd-al-Baha (founder of the Bahá ' í faith), then by the 'new world' that he hoped to build in the Soviet Union. - The Cahiers de la Quinzaine is a French bi-monthly magazine now gone. THOREAU, Henry David
Boston: Houghton Mifflin and Company, 1906. Manuscript Edition. Hardcover. Light wear. Near Fine with an exceptional manuscript offering. Large octavo (6" x 8-3/4"), 20 volumes bound in original green buckram. Illustrated with a folding map of Concord and 103 plates with lettered tissue guards. Manuscript edition, in original binding. Number 536 of 600 sets SIGNED by the publisher and with an ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT sheet by Thoreau tipped into the first volume. The two page manuscript fragment comprises 55 lines, much of it with a big "X" by Thoreau over the text. What is not crossed out, however, is one of Thoreau's best-known paragraphs from his important essay, LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE: "Just so hollow and ineffectual, for the most part, is our ordinary conversation. Surface meets surface. When our life ceases to be inward and private, conversation degenerates into mere gossip. We rarely meet a man who can tell us any news which he has not read in a newspaper, or been told by his neighbors, and, for the most part, the only difference between us & our fellow, is that he has seen the newspaper, or been out to tea, & we have not. In proportion as our inward life fails, we go more constantly & desperately to the post office." The rest of the paragraph, not present here: "you may depend on it, that the poor fellow who walks away with the greatest number of letters, proud of his extensive correspondence, has not heard from himself this long while." Most of the manuscript has been "X"ed by Thoreau and may or may not be published, but certainly is interesting. In part: "Mere number … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jack London
First Edition Children Of The Frost, by Jack London 1906, Signed (in Hawaii), with an October 1907 copy of Women's Home Companion Magazine containing the article, by Jack London, that is credited with sparking awareness of, and popularizing, the sport of surfing. These are wonderful and historic companion pieces. THE BOOK: 1906 First Edition, Fair Condition A signed note written to Amy von Tempsky, dated September 13th, 1907, is pasted onto the title page. The note reads as follows- "Dear Mrs. Von:- In fond memory of happy Maui days with you and yours. Jack London Hilo, H.I. Sept. 13, 1907" The date, and the person that the inscription references, Amy von Tempsky, places Jack London in Hawaii where he and his wife Charmian stayed for several months during an extended sailing journey from California to the South Pacific. Amy von Tempsky was the wife of Louis von Tempsky who was manager of the Haleakala Ranch near Hilo where it is documented the Londons stayed for a time in September of 1907. On the front pastedown there is a "bookplate" with London's silhouette. The bookplate has evidence of folds, and appears to have been cut (unevenly) from a larger document, possibly from London's personalized stationary or envelope. The owner signature on the front pastedown is that of author, Armine von Tempsky (spelled Tempski for her books). She was the daughter of Louis and Amy von Tempsky. It appears that the inscription was written in her hand. Though there is separation at the rear hinge, the text block is solid. Let the pictures be your guide concerning overall condition of the b … [Click Below for Full Description]

O. Wilde [John Francis Bloxam] / A. W. Hiller (Translator)
Schmitz & Olbertz, 1906. One of 600 copies of this German Edition of The Priest and the Acolyte, attributed to Oscar Wilde. Stuart Mason, in the Introductory Protest, as well as in his Bibliography of Oscar Wilde, makes is clear that though this scandalous story is oft-attributed to Wilde, it was in fact penned by John Francis Bloxam of Exeter College, Oxford and was reprinted from The Chameleon, Vol. I, No. 1, December 1894 [Mason, 655]. This copy rebound in a vellum binding, decorated with geometrical ornaments, both Symbolist and derivative of Viennese decoration. Signed by the Hungarian artist Kozma Lajos whose early work is similar to graphic works by German and Austrian artists of the period and a bit earlier. Lajos was to become better known as an architect and designer. Some light and scattered foxing. (Mason, 655).
