The Cricket of the Hearth.

London: J. M. Dent,, 1906. A Tale of Home. With illustrations by C. E. Brock. Octavo (178 x 113 mm). Contemporary art nouveau-style vellucent binding by Cedric Chivers of Bath, hand-painted crest design of holly branches to front board and spine, the former framed within mother-of-pearl onlay, title to front board and spine in red on a light green background, front board elaborately tooled in gilt, single gilt fillet to rear board, bevelled edges, top edge gilt, double gilt fillet to turn-ins with fleuron cornerpieces. Illustrated title page, colour frontispiece and 7 other plates, black and white illustrations in the text. 1930s prize label to front pastedown. Spine a little darkened, small glue residue to front free endpaper, light spotting to endleaves. An excellent copy. A fine vellucent binding by Cedric Chivers, delicately embellished with mother-of-pearl. The vellucent technique was developed by Cedric Chivers in the early 1900s. In contrast to the earlier method used by Edwards of Halifax, the painting was not done on the underside of the transparent vellum, but on paper which was attached to the binding and covered with vellum. The surface of the vellum was then tooled in gold, thus enhancing the impressive effect.

Biedermeier-Zierat. Zu Haben in Plaven i.V. bei Christian Stoll

Portfolio of 24 full-color plates depicting Biedermeier-inspired ornamental motifs for interior decorating, including wallpaper designs, botanical and floral images, and geometric patterns, many with visible Art Nouveau influence. Some very minor soiling, plates in brilliant colors. Square folio. Orig. publisher's printed boards, some soiling, bumping especially to corners, ribbon tie closure torn. Plauen, Germany (Christian Stoll) n.d. (circa 1906). The Biedermeier style was popular in Central Europe between 1815 and 1848, and is applied to visual arts and interior design together with other fields including literature and music. At this time, the middle class was growing and creating a new audience for the arts and home goods, and a new emphasis on home life meant a blossoming in the areas of furniture design and interior decoration. The style is a simplified version of the French Empire style and is characterized by clean lines and minimal ornamentation, although it progressed to ornate pieces commissioned by the rising middle class eager to show off their newfound wealth before returning to a more utilitarian form later on. As of August 2016, WorldCat locates three holdings in North American institutions.

        Rare Autograph Musical Quotation

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A rare AMQS from the important Italian concert pianist, teacher, and author of etudes, penned in the last year of his life. On a postcard bearing his portrait, Cesi has penned the beginning of one of his demanding piano studies, marked Presto, complete with fingerings and expressive marks. He has signed and dated in rather shaky writing: Naples, April 1906. On the verso, the postcard is addressed to the Argentinian collector Ramona Imaz Otaño. In fine condition. 5.5 x 3.5 inches (14.2 x 9.4 cm).
Born in Naples, Cesi began his studies with his father, and later with Luigi Albanesi. He was heard by Sigismund Thalberg, who was so impressed with him that he made him one of his favourite pupils. He began his career as a concert performer in 1862 and quickly gained a reputation in Italy. At the age of 20 he won a competition to gain the position of piano professor at the Royal Conservatorio of San Pietro a Majella in Naples. When Anton Rubinstein was appointed director of the Petrograd Conservatory, he invited Cesi to direct the pianoforte schools there. Cesi accepted the appointment in 1885, remaining until 1891, when he was forced to return to Italy owing to a paralysis which had set in. This, however, left his intellect unimpaired and still gave him the use of his right hand, and in 1894 he became a teacher in the Conservatory at Palermo, and after a few years there he was able to return to Naples Conservatory, where he remained in charge of a chamber-music class until his death in 1907. His educational writings (Method for Pianoforte) had considerable importance, and he wrote many volumes of revision of piano music. Among his notable pupils were Giuseppe Martucci, Alessandro Longo, Michele Esposito, Samuel Maykapar, and Leopoldo Mugnone.
The "Little Folks" Plays Containing Cinderella, Rumplestiltzkin and Dummling

London, Paris New York & Melbourne: Cassell and Company, 1906 - "Little Folks"[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. BROWNE, Maggie. HILL, Miranda. The "Little Folks" Plays Containing Cinderella, Rumplestiltskin and Dummling. How to get up a Children's Play. By Miranda Hill and Maggie Browne. Illustrated. London, Paris New York & Melbourne: Cassell and Company, Limited, 1906. First edition in book form (first published as a single play "Cinderella" in 1903). Small octavo (7 1/4 x 4 3/4 inches; 185 x 121 mm.). [1-3], 4-48, [1], 4-30, [33], 34-48, [5-9], 10-48 pp. Two full-page color plates and two full-page black and white drawings by Arthur Rackham. Four other full-page color plates and several black and white drawings by H.R. Millar and others.Publisher's blue cloth, front cover pictorially stamped in dark brown and lettered in dark brown and gilt. Spine lettered in dark brown, plain end-papers. Expertly rebacked with the original cloth spine laid-down. An excellent copy. The strange pagination does not account for the apparently intentional stubs left by the publisher, which, when counted, gives continuous numbers. The book, though, is complete in spite of the quirky pagination; it has been compared with the few other known copies as a check for completeness. The publication date has been taken from Riall, as well as the copy in the University of Texas Libraries, which has a 1906 inscription as well as bound in publisher's advertisements dated August, 1906 (though this is in a variant tan binding). 'Cinderella" is a very early illustrated work by Arthur Rackham, first appearing in the Little Folks monthly in November and December of 1897. This is its first appearance in book form. Counting the frontispiece, there are two full color full page plates, and two full page black and white plates. "Rumpelstiltzkin and Dimmling" is illustrated with 2 color plates and 3 black and white plates. "Rumpelstiltzkin" is illustrated by H. R. Millar; it apparently appeared in book form in 1903, but one of the plates is dated '94. The final work, "How to Get Up a Children's Play" is illustrated with line drawings and two unsigned full color plates. A very early and really scarce Rackham, whose career is usually dated from 1894. His Cinderella is significantly different form the illustrations in his later work.In over fifty years of specializing in the work of Arthur Rackham I have never seen this title before (DJB).According to OCLC there is one copy of the single play Cinderella (1903) at Cambridge University (GB) and just six copies of the 1906 edition (University of Southern California; Yale University Library; University of Michigan Library; University of Minnesota; Free Library of Philadelphia, and University of Texas, Austin.Gettings, p. 175 (1903 Cinderella); Hamilton, p. 188 (1903 edition); Hudson, p. 175 (1906 edition); Riall, p. 55; Not in Latimore and Haskell. Edurard Thöny: Halbwelt (Originalzeichnung)

      - Tusche (Pinsel, Feder, Spritztechnik) und Deckweiß auf Papier. 43,5 x 33 cm.

New York: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1906. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Plus. Anthony Fiala, Russell W. Porter, J.Knowles Hare. A bright, solid copy, in the original deep green cloth, of the first edition of this classic account of polar exploration and survival with a SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH by the author pasted in. Edges as issued - top edge gilt, fore and bottom edges rough trimmed. Front board blind stamp ruled and illustrated, spine gilt titled. Beautifully illustrated throughout with photographs and sketches by the author, and nine full color reproductions from paintings by Russell W. Porter and J. Knowles Hare. Photo frontispieces to introduction (Wm Zeigler) and to text (Anthony Fiala) with tissue guards intact and complete, pp xxii, 296, appendix No V (six pp un-numbered). Large fold out map tipped in at rear. Evidence of a removed bookplate or other item to front pastedown with four dried glue spots and a vertical line about 1/4 inch wide and 7 ins high where surface of paper has been lifted. Pasted-in photo (photogravure?) bears the handwritten greeting "A Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year / Anthony Fiala" all in blue ink. The image appears to have been professionally retouched to enhance contrast. Transparent tape has been added to corners and centre top and bottom of photo - which is also pasted in - below the epigraph. Map is clean, bright and complete with a 1 1/4 inch closed vertical tear along third crease line and a repaired 6 inch horizontal tear on the left side. Repair appears to have been made with Japanese paper and rice paste which has preserved paper and color. Faint foxing on map itself and a some minor but more noticeable foxing on two pages preceding map. Fiala's own account of the expedition planned and funded by William Ziegler for whom Fiala had been photographer on a previous expedition and to whom this book is dedicated, Ziegler having died just eighteen months before it's publication. The explorers never reached the North Pole, their ship America broke up and their prOvisions were lost. One of the company died before a rescue ship arrived some two years later but the rest, including Fiala, survived and returned to the U.S. Some nine years after his rescue Fiala accompanied Theodore Roosevelt on an expedition into unexplored regions of Brazil. Later in his eventful life Fiala gave illustrated lectures on these and other adventures. He is remembered as an explorer, photographer and graphic artist of considerable merit.

Benerman & Wilson, Philadelphia 1906 - 4tos., variable paginations, illustrated with engravings and photogravures. An original mounted photographic frontispiece or a photomechanical plate in each of the biweekly issues. 13 bound volumes, as follows: Volume 26, 1889 through Volume 36, 1899, with Volume 40, 1903 and Volume 43, 1906. The first 11 volumes are bound in contemporary quarter leather with marbled paper over board, t.e.g., and were acquired from the British Patent office, and bear their stamp throughout, often extending into the photograph. Hinges show moderate wear and rubbing. The volumes for 1903 and 1906 have been newly rebound in cloth over boards and have no ex-library markings. Very good. The first year of this title was 1889. In its earlier iteration as The Philadelphia Photographer and under the current title, Edward L. Wilson published the finest photographic magazine in America, dedicated to the advancement of the professional photographer through articles, reviews, illustrations and formulae. Alternating issues either had for the frontispiece an original albumen, or gas light photographs, or a photogravure, or other photomechanical process until 1896, when all frontispieces were photomechanical. WILSON'S PHOTOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE is a continuation of The Philadelphia Photographer; therefore, (Vol.1) 1889 is numbered Vol. 26; it ceased under this title in December 1914, when it was purchased by Thomas Coke Watkins, and continues as The Photographic Journal of America. Peter Pan In Kensington Gardens

London: Hodder & Stoughton, , 1906. (From "The Little White Bird"). Quarto. Original russet cloth, titles and decoration to spine and front board gilt, dark grey endpapers with map to the front free endpaper. Colour frontispiece and 49 colour tipped-in colour plates with captioned tissues collected at end of text, by Rackham. Inscription rubbed out to front pastedown, ends of spine lightly bumped, corners and bottom edge with a touch of rubbing. A beautiful example of this title. First trade edition, first impression. After the enormous success of the play Peter Pan, which opened on 27 December 1904 and broke all previous theatrical records, Barrie sanctioned this publication, in collaboration with Rackham as illustrator. The text was extracted, with minor revisions, from Barrie's book-within-a-book in his London story-collection for adults, The Little White Bird (1902), and it was published specifically as a children's gift book. (The play remained unpublished until 1928.)

The Birds of the British Islands.

London: E. Grant Richards,, 1906-11. 5 volumes, quarto (322 x 246 mm). Contemporary red half morocco, spines gilt tooled on the raised bands, red pebble-grain cloth sides, top edges gilt, untrimmed, marbled endpapers. 318 gravure plates (with captioned tissue guards) by Lilian M. Medland, 2 folding coloured maps; title pages printed in red & black. Spines lightly sunned and with a few marks. A very good set. First edition. Stonham (1858-1916) "was senior surgeon to the Westminster Hospital... [and] was decorated for services in South Africa as chief surgeon and officer commanding the Imperial Yeomanry Field Hospital". The illustrator, Lilian Medland (1880-1955) has been described by the National Library of Australia as "much-overlooked but brilliant". "With a privileged upbringing, educated at home by a governess, the adventurous young Lilian also had the opportunity to walk in Scotland and travel abroad, enjoying mountain climbing, skiing and skating in Switzerland and Austria, and sketching wherever she happened to be. At 16, she began nursing training at Guy's Hospital in London. Here, fortuitously the leading surgeon... Charles Stonham, a keen ornithologist, noticed her sketching ability and encouraged her, setting her on her second and lifelong career. Stonham was compiling a major work, The Birds of the British Islands... Medland's drawings reveal keen and accurate observation. Where possible she showed birds in lifelike attitudes... Owls and raptors were always her favourites and her paintings proclaim the drama of their power" (Christobel Mattingley, Seen but Not Heard: Lilian Medland's Birds, 2014, pp. 9-10). In 1923 Medland married the conchologist and ornithologist Tom Iredale and they moved to Sydney, Australia.
